- Chapter 17 - Please, Kiss Me One More Time
“Wow, you’re so arrogant,” Shen Rui remarked.
“Well, fine,” Yu Yan said, her arrogance exceeding Huo Xixi’s wildest expectations. This realization deepened Huo Xixi’s awareness of the gap between them. She sighed, “I finally understand the difference between us. Your charm comes from money, family, and growing up socializing with the elite. You’re a top-tier social butterfly, something ordinary people like me can’t easily imitate.”
“It’s not that dramatic,” Yu Yan reassured her. “Huo Xixi, if you’re a good little follower and help me with things like signing in and doing my homework, I might teach you a few tricks. Getting a beautiful girlfriend would be a piece of cake for you then.”
“Exactly,” Liang Su chimed in. “Huo Xixi, if you had half her boldness, you could date eight girls at once. With your looks, you could easily manage four.”
“Hey, I never dated eight girls at once!” Yu Yan protested.
“Don’t deny it now,” Liang Su teased. “Did you forget? Who was it who drunkenly declared they’d date eight girlfriends at once on their last birthday?”
Yu Yan brazenly replied, “That was just drunken talk. I have a wife now.”
Shen Rui laughed. “What’s wrong? Afraid your wife will hear?”
Of course she was. Sister Fu was right next door.
Yu Yan was sharp and perceptive. With Fu Yunqing doting on her so much, she could easily sense the other woman’s affection. Besides basking in her own charm, she intended to make the most of this affection. If Fu Yunqing accidentally overheard her and lost interest, how would she ever get to cuddle with Sister Fu again?
Dating eight people at once? That was way too much. If she were going to do that, she’d keep it secret, not flaunt it.
Huo Xixi and the others were so tolerant of her that they’d probably forgive anything short of murder or arson. But she couldn’t let Sister Fu find out how fickle her heart really was.
Speaking of which, Yu Yan couldn’t help but daydream about what it would be like to date eight people at once…
Her phone lit up, interrupting her fantasy. It was a message from Fu Yunqing. Yu Yan immediately opened it, a smile tugging at her lips.
Sister Fu couldn’t resist her after all. She’d sent a real-time photo of herself in the dressing room.
It wasn’t a selfie, but it was enough.
The camera only showed a glimpse of Fu Yunqing’s shoulder, neck, and side profile, surrounded by makeup artists. It was the first time Yu Yan had seen her in a wedding dress, even if it was just a hint of the lace trim on the strapless gown, jewelry that echoed the design of Yu Yan’s own headpiece, and pearl earrings dangling from her lobes. Yet this fleeting glimpse, combined with Fu Yunqing’s porcelain-smooth skin, her straight back, her long, still lashes, and a ray of sunlight resting on the tip of her nose, evoked an aura of divine grace.
Yu Yan’s heart skipped a beat. She instinctively turned to look out the window, confirming that she and Fu Yunqing were in the same time and space.
After a moment’s hesitation, she scrolled through her emoji library, selected a drooling cat, and sent it with the message, “Can I ride with Sister Fu to the church later?”
Completely smitten, she couldn’t wait to see her wife.
[Fu Yunqing replied: No.]
[Yu Yan: Why not?]
[Fu Yunqing: Just because.]
[Yu Yan: What do you mean, “just because”?]
[Fu Yunqing: Be good today.]
Be good today…?
Ugh, Fu Yunqing is so good at this! How can someone be so effortlessly cool? Yu Yan’s cheeks flushed. Then it hit her: Fu Yunqing is teasing me.
*****
The wedding was set for four in the afternoon. Dressed in her wedding gown and with her makeup done, Yu Yan was escorted to the bridal car by a group of attendants. She ultimately didn’t ride with Fu Yunqing; if Fu Yunqing wanted to play hard to get, then Yu Yan would play hard to get right back.
She hadn’t replied to Fu Yunqing’s message: “Be good today.”
It was a bright, sunny day. The sky was as blue as an upside-down ocean, and the wind sculpted the clouds into giant, fantastical beasts that drifted lightly across the sky. Sandwiched between the sea and the sky, those traveling on land felt a sense of lightness as they gazed out the window. She felt free. Life was a vast wilderness, and this moment was her wilderness. She was still young, only twenty years old. Even as she held the bridal bouquet in her arms, knowing she was about to get married, she felt happy. This place was her choice; she had wanted to visit the Cliffs of Moher since last year, and this occasion finally made it possible. Everyone around her seemed eager to fulfill her wishes.
Yu Yan didn’t need to worry about the future. All she had to do was savor the scenery before her and fully experience everything happening around her.
Thinking this, Yu Yan’s lips curved into a smile, her eyes sparkling. Liang Su, sitting beside her, snapped countless photos, each one perfect; not a single one was a dud.
“So many beautiful photos! A nine-grid collage won’t even be enough,” Yu Yan said.
“We can save some for later,” Yu Yan replied. “Maybe one night when I can’t sleep, I’ll stumble across them and post them for a little throwback.”
“Good idea!”
It was such a shame Lu Yu couldn’t witness her wedding at the world’s end, the most carefree, romantic, and liberating ceremony, carried by the roaring winds of the Atlantic.
Lu Yu was Yu Yan’s childhood friend, a year older. Their mothers were friends, and after Yu Yan moved from her grandmother’s house to Yun City, they attended the same elementary school. Lu Yu even accompanied her on her first day.
Lu Yu, though raised in luxury like Yu Yan, wasn’t spoiled or arrogant. She always carried herself with a clean and scholarly air that’s calm and responsible and took meticulous care of Yu Yan. Yu Yan loved spending time with her. Yet Lu Yu was also the most stubborn and headstrong person Yu Yan had ever met.
Yu Yan and Lu Yu had gone to the same middle and high schools, but they hadn’t seen each other in ages. About four years ago, Lu Yu had filled out her college application for a school as far from home as possible, severing ties with her mother over a female teacher.
It was almost unbelievable. Yu Yan even wondered if sexual orientation could be contagious. Back when Yu Yan was a carefree high school sophomore, flitting around like a social butterfly, Lu Yu sat across from her, looking unusually somber. At the time, Yu Yan hadn’t even realized how long it had been since they’d last seen each other.
Lu Yu announced she was leaving, her college application already submitted.
“Where are you going?” Yu Yan asked.
“The Northwest, I think.”
“Are you crazy? That’s so far! What are you going to study?”
“I want to be a teacher.”
“But… can’t you become a teacher in Yun City?”
That’s when Yu Yan learned Lu Yu had fallen for her math teacher. She’d secretly drawn portraits of the teacher and poured her longing and memories of their interactions into her diary. Lesbians and their artistic tendencies—Yu Yan understood that. But why couldn’t Lu Yu have been more careful? Her diary had been discovered in her high school locker.
Yu Yan knew Mother Lu well. Like Yu Lan, she was a domineering and unreasonable woman who blamed the teacher’s morals and secretly drove her away.
Lu Yu was devastated and had a huge fight with her mother. She told Yu Yan she couldn’t stay in Yun City anymore and wanted to go far away, so far she might not even have enough money for a plane ticket back.
This was the first time Yu Yan realized Lu Yu was actually into women. Women? Yu Yan had always thought Lu Yu was asexual, given her detached and reserved nature since childhood. She couldn’t imagine Lu Yu ever being in a relationship with anyone. Could it be that Yu Yan’s lifelong obsession with women had influenced her? Had she become gay by osmosis?
Maybe she was always gay.
How else could they be such close sisters?
Yu Yan never expected Lu Yu to have such guts. No empty threats, just action. She said she’d go to the Northwest, and she did. She said she wouldn’t come back, and she didn’t. Now she was teaching in a rural village, and even during summer vacation, she was too busy to visit.
But she sent a red envelope with 6660 yuan. Since cutting ties with her mother, Lu Yu hadn’t asked for money from home. Yu Yan worried she might not have enough to eat out there. Lu Yu assured her she was fine and not to worry.
Yu Yan wanted Lu Yu to feel the reality of her childhood best friend getting married, so she sent her a few photos Liang Su had just taken. Due to the time difference, it was already 8 or 9 PM where Lu Yu was. Lu Yu replied almost immediately:
****
[Beautiful!]
[I’m still in disbelief.]
[The Young Mistress is as carefree as ever, still texting me even on her way to the wedding!]
[Of course.]
[Happy wedding day! May your marriage not be a cage, and may you always remain free.]
****
That goes without saying.
After a brief chat, Yu Yan gathered her things and prepared to get out of the car.
The wedding venue was perched on a cliff over two hundred meters high, with the endless Atlantic Ocean stretching behind it under a sky of blue and white. As if the sea knew it was Yu Yan’s wedding day, the waves had calmed into a gentle stillness. Yu Yan stepped out of the car, lifting the hem of her wedding gown. Beyond the natural scents of the sea, grass, and flowers, she detected a rich, mellow fragrance reminiscent of aged wine. Accompanied by soft piano music and the gentle sea breeze, the scene was grand and dreamlike, breathtakingly beautiful.
At a glance, nearly all the guests had arrived, raising their glasses and chatting. Dressed in elegant gowns and suits, they looked like nobles and gentry from the Middle Ages.
The main characters here are Yu Yan and Fu Yunqing.
Yu Yan was still feeling a bit dazed. Under Yu Lan’s strict instructions, she had put away her phone, stopped fidgeting, and obediently touched up her makeup while waiting.
Soon, the light piano music that had been almost imperceptible in the air transformed into something grand and majestic. She knew the ceremony was about to begin, and her heart grew tense with the increasingly focused atmosphere. Her neck and back were already stiff and aching from holding herself so rigidly in the elaborate wedding gown. Every movement felt deliberate and cautious. Now, standing with even greater poise beneath the white veil, she felt the wind gently lift her veil. Her gaze lowered, she blinked occasionally, still feeling somewhat disoriented, until she finally heard the officiant announce, “Please welcome the brides.”
The white veil before her seemed to part as if brushed aside by the wind. Clutching the stems of her bouquet, she slowly walked down the flower-strewn aisle. White rose petals drifted from the sky, creating a romantic atmosphere. Everyone fell silent, their eyes fixed on her.
Yu Yan saw another woman in a wedding dress walking toward her.
She couldn’t help but stare.
At first, Yu Yan could only make out a dazzling white silhouette in the distance. Gradually, Fu Yunqing came into focus before her eyes, the ocean, blue sky, grass, flowers, and crowd fading into the background as Yu Yan’s pupils narrowed in concentration.
A wedding dress truly suited women, especially a woman as beautiful as Fu Yunqing. She looked like a figure from a medieval painting, yet there was no trace of her in history. This was the only time she would reveal such tender and sacred beauty. The cinched waist, white lace bodice, and mermaid-like train made her seem like a white rose blooming from the petals of a flower named “wedding dress,” gazing at Yu Yan with such beauty, gentleness, and unwavering composure.
Yu Yan felt her heart flutter, her breath catching in her throat. She stared blankly at Fu Yunqing, declaring her the most beautiful woman in the world. Well, at least in this moment, no one could compare to her in Yu Yan’s eyes.
Fu Yunqing held a bouquet of flowers, blooming just above her chest. While Yu Yan was still dazed, she took Yu Yan’s arm with her other hand and led her up the steps.
The Atlantic sea breeze whipped across Yu Yan’s face. Beyond the grand floral arch, adorned with rare and fragrant blossoms, and the scattering petals drifting on the wind, the endless ocean stretched to the horizon, filling her entire field of vision. They stood facing each other, and Yu Yan found herself suddenly hesitant to meet Fu Yunqing’s gaze.
Moments later, the female priest, dressed in her clerical robes, began her solemn and clear pronouncements, declaring to all present that they were about to witness a sacred marriage ceremony. She then asked, “Do you vow to love her for life, to be faithful to her, whether she is poor or rich?”
Yu Yan didn’t fully grasp the profound and solemn meaning behind these words. She simply knew it was part of the ceremony. So, when Fu Yunqing said “I do,” she replied with an equally unburdened “I do.” They exchanged bouquets and wedding rings, and then…
She knew there would be a kissing part and had prepared herself to play the role convincingly. But when the moment came, she froze, unsure how to proceed. She was nervous, wondering how to kiss her. Fu Yunqing, thinking she was spacing out, whispered gently, “Yanyan, it’s time to kiss.”
Only Yu Yan could hear her. She blinked, tilted her face up obediently, and looked at Fu Yunqing.
Fu Yunqing thought Yu Yan’s eyes were as clear as a fawn’s.
Fu Yunqing cupped Yu Yan’s chin, her palm warm against Yu Yan’s cheek, her touch gentle and non-threatening. Yu Yan’s lashes fluttered under Fu Yunqing’s caress. Fu Yunqing lowered her head, her breath drawing closer. Yu Yan’s back stiffened. Then she felt soft lips press gently against hers.
Yu Yan’s breath caught in her throat. She didn’t even have time to close her eyes before she heard the screams of her girlfriends and the applause of the guests.
The kiss was light and fleeting. After only a few seconds, Fu Yunqing pulled away. Before leaving, she stroked Yu Yan’s hair as if praising her, her eyes softening with tenderness.
Later, the female pastor spoke in English about “under God’s witness” and other such phrases. Everyone cheered. Yu Yan and Fu Yunqing cut the wedding cake together. Fu Yunqing told her to blow out the candles, but Yu Yan had forgotten to make a wish. Should she have wished for something?
Yu Yan was still lost in the memory of that kiss.
She tossed the bouquet over her shoulder, facing away from the guests, and it landed right in Huo Xixi’s hands. Oh no, was Huo Xixi’s love life about to take off?
Fu Yunqing, on the other hand, simply handed her bouquet to a friend, a beautiful woman with long, wavy hair.
To be honest, Yu Yan didn’t remember much about what happened after the kiss. Her mind was already elsewhere.
She kissed Fu Yunqing, she kept thinking. Sister Fu smells so good, even her breath is sweet. But the kiss was so quick, she barely had time to savor it. She was left wanting more, desperately.
Unable to resist, she tugged on Fu Yunqing’s hand.
They had just finished taking photos, and Fu Yunqing turned her head, a smile still lingering on her face. “What is it?”
Yu Yan looked up at her and whispered, “Kiss me again.”
Fu Yunqing froze for a moment.
She took a breath, turned her face away, and ignored Yu Yan’s absurd request. Was she offended? Yet she didn’t let go of Yu Yan’s hand. In fact, Yu Yan felt Fu Yunqing grip her hand even tighter. So Yu Yan called out softly again, “Sister Fu~”
Fu Yunqing ignored her.
Yu Yan was secretly thrilled to death.
After the ceremony, it was time for the banquet. Since it was difficult to move around in wedding gowns, the two brides went to change into evening dresses. In the dressing room, finally free from the crowd, Yu Yan seized her chance. Undeterred, she made her request again: “Kiss me again.”
She wrapped her arms around Fu Yunqing’s arm, clinging to her, her eyes pleading and her voice pitiful. “Sister, just one more kiss, please?”
Why did Yu Yan want Fu Yunqing to kiss her again? Did she even realize what that meant? Fu Yunqing had no idea how to handle her, so she could only urge, “Hurry and get dressed. We can’t be late for the banquet.”
Seeing Fu Yunqing avoid the issue only fueled Yu Yan’s persistence. “Aww… really? I want you to kiss me again. Didn’t you promise me a reward yesterday if I didn’t drink? I’ve decided—I don’t want any fancy watches, designer bags, sports cars, or anything like that. All I want is another kiss from you.”
“You told me to be good today. Haven’t I been good? I’ve listened to everything you said and behaved so well. Can’t you see that?”
Yu Yan, with her silver tongue, could twist any situation to her advantage. Flattery, coaxing, and twisting logic were her specialties. In her words, nothing material could ever compare to a kiss from Sister Fu.
She knew what Fu Yunqing was worried about. She understood those concerns seemed important; Fu Yunqing wasn’t someone who took things lightly. But Yu Yan didn’t care. She just wanted a kiss. She had a knack for gradually wearing down people’s boundaries.
Could Sister Fu really refuse her?
A faint blush crept up Fu Yunqing’s ears as she finally relented. “We’ll talk about this later. Go get dressed first.”
“Okay!” Yu Yan agreed instantly, her eyes curving into crescents with triumph. She darted into the dressing room like a whirlwind.
