- Chapter 10 - Softening at the Mistaken Sister
Only after the girl beneath her palm fell silent and those moth-wing eyelashes stopped fluttering did Fu Yunqing finally move her hand away from Yu Yan’s eyes.
Yu Yan lay there with her eyes closed, her cheeks flushed deep crimson and her breathing heavy. It was hard to tell if she had actually fallen asleep.
Fu Yunqing touched her cheek; it felt even hotter than before. Fearing she might feel stuffy, Fu Yunqing reached over to lower the car window slightly, letting a sliver of cool breeze swirl in. However, the girl in her lap immediately knit her brows, looking either uncomfortable or disturbed by the noise.
Just as Fu Yunqing was about to speak, Yu Yan suddenly curled her legs and rolled over. She lay on her side, burying her face deep against Fu Yunqing’s abdomen. Except for the tips of her ears, she hid everything away.
“You…”
How can she be so fond of this position? Fu Yunqing lowered her head and whispered, “Won’t it be hard to breathe?”
“Sit up, okay?”
The person in her lap didn’t answer, stubbornly insisting on staying put.
Fu Yunqing was entirely unaccustomed to this. She felt a wave of restless heat rising within her, so she turned her face toward the window and lowered it a bit further. Her expression was one of quiet endurance as she stared out at the night. After a long moment, she let out a helpless sigh and looked back down.
Slowly, Yu Yan felt Fu Yunqing’s initially stiff body begin to relax.
Fu Yunqing’s palm rested over the back of Yu Yan’s neck, as if shielding her ensuring she wouldn’t slide off the seat during the car’s jolts and turns.
Happy moments are always so fleeting.
Yu Yan hadn’t enjoyed herself nearly enough before they reached the hotel. When Fu Yunqing woke her, she pushed herself up but remained huddled against Fu Yunqing’s shoulder, whining softly. She knew her hair and breath were probably making Fu Yunqing’s neck feel incredibly itchy, but she did it anyway.
Fu Yunqing didn’t say a word. Even though a faint red flush crept up her neck, she simply endured it. Her other hand rested lightly on Yu Yan’s waist, offering no rebuke—just like before.
Yu Yan felt that Fu Yunqing was far too indulgent. She had incredible patience.
“Careful.”
Once they were out of the car, Yu Yan could barely stand straight. Fu Yunqing supported her as they headed for the elevator. After pressing the floor button, Yu Yan leaned her head against Fu Yunqing’s shoulder, her misty, reddened eyes half-lidded. Their posture was indescribably intimate and ambiguous.
She wondered: Will Sister Fu take me all the way back to my room? If I act like I’m about to pass out, will she stay to look after me?
Yu Yan wanted that very much.
And so, Yu Yan’s “drunkenness” worsened. By the time they stepped out of the elevator, she could hardly stay on her feet, causing Fu Yunqing to glance at her repeatedly.
“Your tolerance is this poor, yet you drank so much?” Fu Yunqing had heard that Yu Yan frequented bars, so she had assumed the girl could hold her liquor.
“If you were alone and ended up like this, what would you do?”
Fu Yunqing was actually scolding her, but there was no trace of anger or impatience, only genuine worry. Yu Yan secretly basked in it.
Does Fu Yunqing care about me this much already?
Yu Yan didn’t argue with a single word of the lecture. Instead, she waited until Fu Yunqing finished and then mumbled dejectedly, “I was wrong…”
Perhaps not expecting such a quick confession, Fu Yunqing paused. Her voice softened. “Alright then.”
See? As soon as I admit I’m wrong, Sister’s heart softens. Yu Yan’s eyes curved into a hidden smile.
If everything went according to plan, Fu Yunqing would see her to her room. In a space with just the two of them, Sister Fu would take care of her. Maybe if she acted a bit more spoiled, Sister Fu would stay and… sleep with her?
Yu Yan was busy plotting.
But as the saying goes, “if everything goes according to plan” usually means a disaster is coming.
Just as Yu Yan was looking down, fumbling for her key card, she ran right into Yu Lan, who was just leaving her own room. Meeting her mother’s eyes, Yu Yan felt like her world had collapsed.
“How did you get this drunk?” Yu Lan knit her brows. “Yunqing? What is this?”
Fu Yunqing said, “I took her out for a bit. She was having a good time, so she had a few extra drinks at the pub.”
Yu Lan hadn’t expected Fu Yunqing to actually accompany her daughter. She couldn’t very well scold anyone now. “I’m sorry for the trouble. She’s been difficult since she was a child.”
Fu Yunqing gave a refined smile. “It was no trouble. She was very good.”
“As long as she didn’t bother you. I’ll take her back to her room.”
“…”
“Get inside quickly. Take a shower and go to bed. We have things to do tomorrow; don’t let your behavior cause a delay.” Yu Lan glared at Yu Yan, and Fu Yunqing naturally handed the girl over to her mother.
“Oh…” Yu Yan responded reluctantly. She cast one last, lingering look at Fu Yunqing. “Goodnight, Sister Fu.”
Fu Yunqing looked back at her. “…Goodnight.”
Yu Yan was beyond frustrated. She had planned to use her drunkenness to be willful, only to be stopped by the one person who could kill the mood Yu Lan. But beneath the annoyance, there was a strange flicker of joy.
Because in Fu Yunqing’s elegant, guarded eyes, Yu Yan had caught a glimpse of something like worry… or perhaps even a trace of reluctance to part.
She knew that she wasn’t the only one unhappy about this abrupt goodbye.
The sound of the door closing acted like a switch. In front of Yu Lan, Yu Yan stopped acting immediately. She stood up straight, the “pitiful” look vanished from her eyes, and she grabbed a change of clothes to head into the bathroom. Yu Lan saw it all but said nothing.
“Go to sleep early,” Yu Lan instructed.
Yu Yan didn’t reply.
After her shower, Yu Yan was mostly sober. Though her head was still spinning a bit, she wasn’t at the point of passing out.
In truth, she had been faking the “blackout” levels of drunkenness the whole way back.
Lying on the bed, she opened her phone, curious if Fu Yunqing had messaged her.
Sure enough, there was a message from three minutes ago:
Fu Yunqing: [Go to sleep early.]
Yu Yan: [Waaaah]
Yu Yan: [My mom finally left.]
Yu Yan: [It’s all her fault.] (It’s all her fault for ruining my big plans.)
Yu Yan: [She doesn’t care about me at all. I’m suffering and she doesn’t even help.]
After throwing Yu Lan under the bus a little to set the mood, Yu Yan decided to strike while the iron was hot.
Before Fu Yunqing could reply, she sent: [I really want to go to Sister Fu’s room to sleep.]
She followed it up with a sticker of a cat rolling up its bedding and shouting: [Wife, here I come!]
What was Fu Yunqing thinking?
The status [Typing…] flickered at the top of the chat for a long time before disappearing. Finally, a message came through.
Fu Yunqing: [Where does it hurt?]
Yu Yan: [My head is so dizzy.]
Fu Yunqing: [Have you showered?]
Yu Yan: [I showered and smell like flowers. Not a drop of alcohol left on me.]
Fu Yunqing: [Then wrap yourself in your blanket and go to sleep.]
Wrap myself in a blanket and sleep?
Was that really what Fu Yunqing wanted? Yu Yan felt so indignant!
Yu Yan: [But I’m already at Sister’s door.]
*****
In her restlessness, she blurted it out via text. She hadn’t actually moved; she was just talking nonsense.
When Fu Yunqing stopped replying, the prankster started to feel a bit guilty. Fu Yunqing wouldn’t actually believe me, would she? Yu Yan was just being her usual chaotic self.
If she actually had to go to Fu Yunqing’s room, she wouldn’t be nearly this bold. She’d probably be incredibly shy. In truth, she wasn’t actually prepared to share a room with Fu Yunqing yet.
Yu Yan suddenly regretted it and wanted to unsend the message, but Fu Yunqing must have seen it already. Unsending it now would just look weird.
Yu Yan glanced toward the door, actually hesitating on whether she should get up.
Just as she was trapped in indecision, Fu Yunqing, who had been silent for two minutes, finally replied: Fu Yunqing: [Liar.]
Yu Yan’s heart skipped a beat.
