Obsessive Love, The Possessive Real Young Lady - Chapter 36
The chief physician’s words exploded like a bomb in Shen Jiayan’s heart.
A bone marrow transplant as soon as possible…
Who didn’t want that?
The money was easy to raise, but the bone marrow… that was a probability of one in 200,000.
Where was she supposed to find a bone marrow match for Gao Wei?
Over the years, she had dragged almost everyone she knew who could be useful to get tested for a bone marrow match.
Even the landlord couple, the bar employees.
But no one was a match.
Now, the only hope was likely Gao Wei’s biological parents.
However, finding them was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
What could she do now? Could she really watch Gao Wei die right in front of her?
As Shen Jiayan was in a daze, the emergency room door was pushed open again. Gao Wei, connected to various tubes, was wheeled out on a hospital bed.
Her already pale face had become completely bloodless lying there, she looked utterly lifeless.
Shen Jiayan and Director Mama rushed forward, following the bed towards the ward.
As they passed by Su Sui, Shen Jiayan didn’t even spare her a glance.
It was Su Sui who suddenly reached out and grabbed her arm.
“Let go!” Shen Jiayan sharply pulled her arm back, glaring at her, “I don’t have time for your nonsense. You better pray Gao Wei doesn’t have another accident!”
After saying that, she continued to follow.
Su Sui was left behind, gazing deeply at her retreating figure.
Was she resenting her?
Resenting her for blocking Gao Wei, resenting her for bothering her all day, resenting her for almost losing a new toy because of it!
A moment later, Su Sui’s voice came from behind, “Is she really more important than me?”
Shen Jiayan did not answer.
Of course, Su Sui didn’t need an answer from her.
She smiled, sighed, turned, and grabbed a passing nurse, “Excuse me, where can one get a bone marrow match done?”
In the VIP Ward
After the nurse helped settle Gao Wei, she gave a few instructions and left, leaving only Shen Jiayan and Director Mama in the room.
Director Mama looked around, then walked up to Shen Jiayan and said softly, “Gao Qiang, this room must cost a lot of money, right? Why don’t we switch to a regular ward to save some money for the surgery?”
“I didn’t change the room,” Shen Jiayan said, tucking in Gao Wei’s blanket. “Maybe the hospital made a mistake; I’ll go ask.”
She said this and prepared to leave.
“Wait a moment,” Director Mama said, taking a bill out of her pocket and saying with some shame, “We still owe the hospital over 20,000. I really can’t come up with it. Look on your side…”
She couldn’t bring herself to say the rest.
Gao Wei had grown up in the welfare home and was always the most sensible and least troublesome child.
It was just that her life was too hard. She was tiny when she was sent to the welfare home, born prematurely in a restroom, so she had been sickly since childhood, sick from small illnesses to major ones.
The institute could afford the small sicknesses, but since Gao Wei got leukemia, all the money from the welfare home, her personal savings, and charitable donations were nearly depleted.
She had even taken out external debt.
When the child found out, to avoid burdening her or the welfare home, she left silently. Before leaving, she left all the money she earned from part-time work and her scholarships to her.
She thought she would never see Gao Wei again until last Mid-Autumn Festival, when Gao Wei returned with her older sister, Gao Qiang.
Shen Jiayan looked at the thin old woman and smiled, “It’s alright. She is my sister. This money should have been mine to pay anyway; why are you blaming yourself?”
Saying this, she took the bill from Director Mama’s hand. “I’ll be right back. Please look after her for a moment. Ah Wei should be waking up soon.”
“Okay,” Director Mama responded, tears welling up uncontrollably.
Shen Jiayan turned and walked out of the ward.
She went straight to the nurses’ station to ask about the room, only to be told that there was no mistake; it was indeed a VIP special care room, including three meals a day.
Even the outstanding hospital fees had been paid off, and there was a surplus of 100,000 yuan in the account.
Shen Jiayan didn’t need to guess; it was Su Sui’s doing.
Although this money was extremely precious to Gao Wei and to her, the thought that this money belonged to Shen Wenshan filled every cell in Shen Jiayan’s body with resistance.
“Excuse me, can this money be returned to me first?”
Before the nurse could respond, Su Sui stood behind Shen Jiayan with her arms crossed.
“Is face more important, or is life more important?”
Her single sentence silenced Shen Jiayan.
Shen Jiayan rolled her eyes at her, “Don’t think that just because you threw out some smelly money, I’ll let this matter go.”
Although she said that, Su Sui clearly heard that her tone was much softer than before.
It seemed that the ‘Pet Feeding Guide’ wasn’t entirely baseless; at least this technique of smoothing things over was practical.
“Then what about this?” Su Sui handed over the bone marrow matching report card she was holding.
Shen Jiayan paused, took the paper, and looked at it closely.
“This is…” She looked up at Su Sui in surprise.
This was Gao Wei’s bone marrow matching data.
“You went to get matched?”
Perhaps it was the sheer surprise, but Shen Jiayan’s voice involuntarily rose a few octaves, drawing glances from the nearby nurses.
Su Sui looked at her happy expression, but her heart ached. Yet, she forced herself to appear relaxed, curling her lips into a faint smile, “Mm.”
Shen Jiayan excitedly clutched the report, almost crying with emotion, and gave Su Sui a tight hug.
As if anticipating her thoughts, Su Sui spoke first, “I don’t want to hear you say thank you. And we still don’t know if it will be a match.”
With that, she pushed Shen Jiayan away, turned first, her fingertips digging hard into her own flesh.
She was afraid that if Shen Jiayan said “thank you” for another woman, the beast roaring inside her would erupt and cause a scene.
She didn’t want to hear it!
Shen Jiayan, caught up in her happiness, noticed nothing amiss.
“Of course, I know that. It’s not easy for a match to be successful, after all…”
“A one in 200,000 probability, right?”
Shen Jiayan paused slightly, then said, “Yes, a one in 200,000 probability.”
“Since you know that, why give hope?” Su Sui’s voice was somewhat sharp, but still slightly subdued.
Shen Jiayan stared at her silently for a long time, then finally raised the matching report card in her hand and looked up at Su Sui.
“Then why did you do this?”
Su Sui was silent for a moment, then suddenly laughed, her eyes curved with a smile, like spring sunshine melting ice and snow. “I’m doing this to save Gao Wei too.”
“You’re doing it for yourself,” Shen Jiayan also laughed.
She had lived with Su Sui for 18 years; she knew well that Su Sui was not a warm-hearted person. She was cold-blooded, cruel, obsessive, dark, and indifferent. Except for things she cared about, she barely gave a second thought to anything else, let alone a completely unrelated person.
But whatever her own motive, at least Su Sui was learning to endure and restrain herself that was a good start.
Shen Jiayan said softly, “So that I won’t leave you, give up on you, or even return to your side. So you’re betting your hope on the bone marrow match that I value, right?”
Su Sui: “…” She neither denied nor admitted, just looked at her quietly.
Shen Jiayan continued, “I am selfish too. I am for hope. I hope Gao Wei doesn’t die, I hope she lives forever. So even with a one in 200,000 probability, even one in a million, I won’t give up.”
Her voice was soft, gentle, sounding like clouds floating in the sky.
But the hands hanging by Su Sui’s sides clenched into fists, her expression shifting unpredictably.
She looked at Shen Jiayan in front of her. The selfish, willful woman she once loved to the core, the “bad woman,” was completely gone. The current her seemed to have a different soul. Her eyes were clear and bright, and a faint warm smile lingered on her lips, like sunlight pouring into her pupils, driving away the smog of the night.
But it deeply hurt her eyes!! She wanted the former Shen Jiayan, the one who stayed with her in the dark corners, licking each other’s wounds and offering mutual comfort. Not the current one, standing in the sunlight, beautifying everything. Especially this self-righteousness made her feel hypocritical and disgusted.
Su Sui closed her eyes and took two slow breaths of air. When she opened them again, her gaze had returned to its usual calmness and composure.
“If one day, I were also like Gao Wei, terminally ill and facing death at any moment, would you also do this for me without hesitation?”
Shen Jiayan was stunned.
“Would you be willing to save me?” Su Sui pressed on, her gaze burning.
This sense of coercion made Shen Jiayan uncomfortable. She avoided Su Sui’s gaze and looked instead at the medical staff, patients, and family members rushing back and forth in the corridor. To outsiders, this was just an ordinary day, but everyone here was fighting against illness every day. Only those who have fought illness can truly understand its terror and real helplessness!!
Shen Jiayan took a deep breath, turned to look at Su Sui, and said, “Remember this. Never use matters of life and death to test my feelings for anyone.”
“Because it only makes you look exceptionally childish, selfish, and completely immature. In short, we are even today. You should return to M City as soon as possible; don’t waste time staying here.”
Shen Jiayan paused, then added another sentence, “After all, as I said just now, a one in 200,000 probability is too low.”
With that, she walked straight past Su Sui and entered the ward.
In the bustling corridor, Su Sui stood in place for a full half an hour. Her body was stiff, her back straight. Shen Jiayan’s words echoed in her ears:
“Because it only makes you look exceptionally childish, selfish, and completely immature. In short, we are even today.”
Su Sui clenched her hand, her nails digging into her palm.
“Even? How can I ever be even with you? Calling me childish, how much more mature are you?”
Su Sui let out a sarcastic laugh, turned, and left the doorway of the ward.
Shen Jiayan stayed with Gao Wei for a whole week, and during this week, she never saw Su Sui again. She thought she must have given up.
“Knock, knock.” The nurse knocked on the door. “Gao Wei’s family member, please follow me.”
Shen Jiayan glanced at Gao Wei, who was eating, “I’ll be right back you stay put and be good.”
The bald-headed Gao Wei smiled with her eyes crinkled, “Got it, sister. I’m not a child anymore.”
Shen Jiayan pinched her cheek and followed the nurse out.
She expected the doctor to communicate with her about Gao Wei’s condition, but as they moved further away from the doctor’s office, even leaving the inpatient department, Shen Jiayan couldn’t help but ask.
“Wait, Nurse, where are we going?”
“To process the transfer of care.”
