My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 90
Seemingly noticing her concern, Shen Baiyi blinked at her and took her hand.
Zheng Yao composed herself and ultimately didn’t stay too long. She patted Shen Baiyi’s head and withdrew her hand: “Alright, I’m heading back now. I’ll visit you next time.”
“Okay.” With outsiders present, Shen Baiyi restrained herself from doing what she truly wanted and could only watch her with controlled emotions. “Let me walk you downstairs, sister.”
Unfortunately, her sister declined: “You still have military training this afternoon. Get some rest instead. Don’t bother with such trivial matters I’m not a child anymore.”
This back-and-forth of seeing each other off would take forever.
“Fine.” Shen Baiyi’s entire demeanor deflated. “Then remember to message me on WeChat when you get home, sister. Don’t drive too fast, and be careful on the road.”
In response to this concerned chatter, Zheng Yao curved her lips into a smile: “Alright.”
The door opened and closed. Only after watching her sister’s car drive away from the outer corridor did Shen Baiyi return to the dormitory, where she immediately met several pairs of curious eyes.
“Shen Baiyi, you and your sister have such a good relationship,” Wang Zhen said with evident envy, then sighed. “My sister only ever takes my things.”
Du Xuanxuan, who had once been Shen Baiyi’s classmate, wore an expression of utter disbelief.
She knew Shen Baiyi’s background better than anyone Shen Baiyi had been the most notorious figure at their school. Academically outstanding, yet her family situation was incredibly complicated.
A beautiful stepmother, her biological father and said stepmother dying in a car accident, a massive compensation payout, greedy relatives circling like vultures and in the end, it turned out she wasn’t even biologically related, with all the compensation money snatched away by her relatives.
She had even dropped out right before the college entrance exams.
Each of these incidents had caused major waves at their school.
She never expected to see Shen Baiyi again at university. After failing her own college entrance exams, Du Xuanxuan had studied an extra year to test into University A. She thought she’d be the only one from their county to make it, but then there was Shen Baiyi.
And reportedly, Shen Baiyi’s exam scores were much higher than hers.
Shen Baiyi had always been a top student, so that part didn’t surprise her. What was unbelievable was how much Shen Baiyi seemed to have changed, and that she apparently had a beautiful older sister who clearly came from money!
Something wasn’t right. This was very wrong.
Du Xuanxuan stared at Shen Baiyi with complicated emotions. Shen Baiyi acted completely unaware, distributing snacks to each of them.
Looking down at the treat in her hand, Du Xuanxuan finally approached Shen Baiyi quietly while their other two roommates were gaming. “Baiyi.”
“What is it?” Shen Baiyi glanced up at her.
“That woman earlier.” Du Xuanxuan didn’t know how to broach the subject after all, this was Shen Baiyi’s private matter. She stammered, “Is she your biological sister?”
Shen Baiyi’s expression darkened. “No.”
Unwilling to say more, she turned away, gathered her change of clothes, and headed to the bathroom.
Under the shower spray, Shen Baiyi’s face rarely showed frustration.
She’d already decided not to call her “sister” so why did she eagerly use the term the moment she saw her?
Now everyone would misunderstand.
–
By the time Zheng Yao returned home, it was already 3:30 in the afternoon. Seeing BuBu meowing complaints from hunger, she felt full of guilt and hurried to refill her masters’ food bowls, adding some extra treats as compensation.
After finally settling her young masters, she lay down on the sofa, all that bustling about was truly exhausting.
Still, Shen Baiyi seemed to be in decent shape. Though she’d slimmed down a bit, she appeared more robust and spirited than before.
The only lingering concern remained her social interactions.
She worried about clique formation in the dormitory specifically, the other three banding together and leaving Shen Baiyi isolated.
This scenario was actually quite common. At every stage of student life, small groups would inevitably form, clustering in twos and threes.
No, it wasn’t just during student years.
Workplace cliques were even more prevalent.
At this thought, she sighed. Why was she worrying so much? If this continued, wouldn’t she end up fretting over Shen Baiyi for a lifetime?
The mere idea was terrifying. Zheng Yao quickly banished the thought, refusing to let her mind wander further.
Well, Shen Baiyi was an adult. She was just her girlfriend, not actually her mother she should simply trust Shen Baiyi.
–
The day before the freshman performance showcase, Zheng Yao went to University A ahead of time.
Of course, she kept it secret from Shen Baiyi.
She wanted to surprise her, having deliberately made up an excuse on WeChat about being too busy to attend the performance.
After staying overnight at the apartment there and having breakfast the next morning, Zheng Yao leisurely made her way to University A.
The stadium bleachers were already filled with many students. Since it happened to be a weekend with no classes, numerous students had come to watch their junior classmates perform.
“Ms. Guan, over here!”
Zhi-zhi was waving enthusiastically Zheng Yao couldn’t possibly miss it. She hurried over. “Why are you here so early?”
The performance wasn’t starting until nine, and it was only eight-thirty. She had thought she’d arrive first.
“Well, I had nothing else to do anyway. Might as well feast my eyes on some handsome guys and pretty girls.” Zhi-zhi chuckled. “University A has so many good-looking guys and girls.”
Zheng Yao neither agreed nor disagreed. She hadn’t paid attention to others, but Shen Baiyi was truly beautiful.
Over the years, University A’s performance showcase didn’t seem to have changed much from previous editions. Yet, the thought of Shen Baiyi appearing soon made it quite exciting.
Zheng Yao had prepared herself for the possibility of not spotting Shen Baiyi, but she turned out to be so striking. The moment her department’s formation emerged, Zheng Yao caught sight of her.
She had grown considerably taller, though not enough to stand out like a crane among chickens, positioned in the middle of the group.
Zheng Yao took out her phone and carefully photographed her.
“Oh my god, Ms. Guan!” Zhi-zhi exclaimed dramatically beside her. “That one is so pretty and stylish!”
Zheng Yao followed her gaze and, unsurprisingly, Zhi-zhi was pointing at Shen Baiyi.
She curved her lips slightly. “Is that so?”
“I love her, I love her!” As she spoke, Zhi-zhi pulled out her own phone. “I’ll take a few shots to share in the group chat, she’s too gorgeous.”
Hearing this, Zheng Yao stopped her. “Don’t.Her obstruction left Zhi-zhi puzzled. “Why not?”
“Just enjoy it yourself. No need to share in the group chat.” Zheng Yao said seriously.
Zhi-zhi didn’t understand she usually shared sightings of attractive people with her friends. Share the joy, right? When there was someone this good-looking, of course her friends should see.
Though confused, she didn’t push further, nodding in disappointment. “Alright then.”
Shen Baiyi’s department’s dagger drill was scheduled rather late. Zheng Yao waited until she was nearly drowsy before finally hearing the host announce the dagger drill.
Instantly perked up.
This time, Shen Baiyi was even more eye-catching she was directly assigned to the front row to lead the exercises alongside another male student.
Zhi Zhi’s delighted voice rang out beside her once again.
It wasn’t just Zhi Zhi; many people in the stands gasped softly. Zheng Yao could stop Zhi Zhi, but she couldn’t stop everyone else.
Sigh.
With a quiet sigh in her heart, Zheng Yao pulled herself together and continued watching.
Shen Baiyi truly deserved to be placed at the front by the instructor. Her movements were precise, full of energy, and not the least bit sluggish. It was a pleasure to watch her perform both graceful and satisfying.
“She’s amazing, this girl,” Zhi Zhi kept exclaiming. Even after the performance ended, when she noticed the pretty girl she’d been watching suddenly glance in her direction, she grew instantly excited. Grabbing the arm of Teacher Guan beside her, she exclaimed, “Teacher Guan, she looked at me! She looked at me!”
Zheng Yao: “…”
Was it possible, perhaps, that Shen Baiyi was actually looking at her?
The girl had excellent eyesight. As soon as the performance ended, she looked up at Zheng Yao, seemingly unsurprised by her presence she must have noticed her long ago.
After all the performances concluded, there was another long, tedious speech by the leadership. Zhi Zhi was busy typing away, likely happily chatting with her friends in a group chat.
Zheng Yao, meanwhile, looked down at the video she had just recorded. She had filmed Shen Baiyi specifically, and with her phone’s high resolution, even zoomed in several times, the footage remained clear, the screen filled entirely with Shen Baiyi’s face.
“So this is it, Teacher Guan!” Zhi Zhi’s indignant voice suddenly cut in. “You told me not to record, but you were secretly filming all along!”
Zheng Yao retorted confidently, “I wasn’t filming secretly.”
She had been filming openly; it was just that Zhi Zhi had been too engrossed to notice.
“I don’t care! Teacher Guan, you’re just…” She struggled for a moment, unable to find the right words, and finally gritted her teeth. “I don’t care, Teacher Guan has to send me a copy.”
Zheng Yao refused without hesitation, “No.”
“Why not?!”
Zhi Zhi was incredulous, stunned by the outright rejection and the fact that Teacher Guan had refused so unapologetically!
Zheng Yao tapped her screen with a slender finger, her tone even more matter-of-fact. “This is my girlfriend. It’s only natural for me to record her. Why should I send it to you?”
Zhi Zhi burst out laughing. “Teacher Guan, I never thought you’d call someone you like ‘girlfriend’ or ‘wife’ or anything like that.”
Zheng Yao: “…”
Why did no one believe her when she told the truth?
–
“Sister.” After the event, Shen Baiyi hurried straight to the stands, a smile on her face. “Sister, were you here yesterday too? Why didn’t you tell me in advance?”
As she spoke, she took Zheng Yao’s hand, firmly interlacing their fingers.
Her gaze then shifted to the spot beside Zheng Yao. “Who was that with you earlier? Another friend of yours?”
Thinking of that person, Shen Baiyi’s eyes darkened slightly. She remembered her, in the bar video Lin Weiwei had sent, that person had been sitting close to Sister, seeming quite familiar.
Perhaps it was she who had led Sister astray.
“Just an online friend who lives nearby. She wanted to watch your performance too, so we decided to sit together.”
But earlier, Zhi Zhi had spotted a junior she liked and, forgetting all about Zheng Yao, rushed off in pursuit of love.
Her gaze fell on Shen Baiyi’s face: “Xiao Bai, you’re not pale at all now, but you’ve grown taller and become prettier.”
It was as if she had suddenly blossomed, looking truly captivating.
No wonder Zhizhi took a liking to her at first sight.
“Sister has become prettier too.” Shen Baiyi reluctantly withdrew her gaze, her voice softening further. “I’ve gotten tanner, not as pretty as before.”
Zheng Yao chuckled: “Don’t you feel insincere saying such things?”
As she spoke, she pulled the other person along to leave.
There would be two days off after military training ended. She asked Shen Baiyi to go back to the dormitory and pack her things.
“I don’t have much stuff. Sister, wait for me downstairs.”
“Alright.”
Zheng Yao nodded. Her car was parked right below the dormitory building. Without following upstairs, she watched Shen Baiyi ascend the stairs. Just as she opened the car door to get in, a voice came from behind:
“Are you Shen Baiyi’s sister?”
