My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 68
As she spoke, she gave Shen Zhuhao an encouraging look: “Go on.”
“Oh, right.” Shen Zhuhao nodded blankly. “Sister Baiyi was really amazing. Her small frame could unleash tremendous power. She quickly subdued the other party, knocking out several of their teeth. Because of this, Sister Baiyi injured her arm and couldn’t even write. Ah, it’s all my fault.”
Hearing this, Zheng Yao’s expression turned serious.
She had previously wondered how Shen Baiyi could have fractured her arm right before the college entrance exams, even suspecting if those terrible relatives had caused it. She never expected it was because of this.
Turning her head, she noticed Shen Baiyi’s nervous gaze. Her eyes paused briefly before she firmly offered her evaluation: “Sacrificing yourself for others, punishing evil and promoting good – you did very well.”
Shen Baiyi was momentarily stunned, then a smile bloomed in her eyes.
Shen Zhuhao beside them exclaimed in admiration: “You’re really good at flattery! If I had half your skill, I wouldn’t still be just a small internet cafe manager.”
“What nonsense are you talking?” Before Zheng Yao could react, Shen Baiyi had already become displeased, her face darkening. “Sister wasn’t flattering – she was stating facts.”
Zheng Yao chuckled wryly.
What a way to state facts. She had racked her brains to choose the right words to praise her, and Shen Baiyi accepted it quite naturally, without any modesty.
Shen Zhuhao clearly held some fear of Shen Baiyi and didn’t dare refute her, only responding awkwardly. However, hearing her repeatedly call Zheng Yao “sister” left a somewhat sour taste in his mouth. He said softly: “It was because of this that Sister Xiaotong met you and since then has regarded you as her own younger sister. When you were injured, Sister Xiaotong was extremely worried and took care of you for a long time.”
“Although you got injured, you gained a sister. That counts as blessing in disguise.” Zheng Yao tried to suppress her emotions, holding Shen Baiyi’s hand as she slowly forced a smile onto her face.
Shen Baiyi wanted to refute this, but she didn’t know the background of this so-called “Sister Xiaotong,” nor what connection she had with her. If the other person had truly shown her kindness, maintaining an ungrateful attitude might make her sister feel disappointed.
After all, in her sister’s eyes, to some extent, the two of them had similarities – both had helped her when she was in trouble, both regarded her as a younger sister. Perhaps her sister would empathize with this “Sister Xiaotong.”
She couldn’t show resistance toward “Sister Xiaotong.”
Shen Baiyi lowered her head: “Mm.”
After pausing for a moment, she still couldn’t help adding: “But in my heart, I like sister the most, most, most, most.”
“Tsk, Baiyi, after not seeing you for over half a year, you can actually say such cheesy things now?” A voice suddenly sounded behind them.
Zheng Yao started, turning to see the woman who had spoken. Her eyes moved over the other person – big wavy hair, wearing a red dress, holding a cigarette between her fingers, the red on her nails particularly striking.
She was a woman with considerable charm.
Of course, although she appeared fashionably dressed and beautiful, one could still discern from her face that she was already of a certain age.
At least in her thirties.
Seeing that the other party wasn’t young, Shen Baiyi’s heart slowly settled back down. She asked hesitantly: “Are you Sister Xiaotong?”
Tang Tong froze for a moment, then tossed her cigarette aside and frowned. “What’s wrong with you? Did the fever burn your brain out?”
As she spoke, she reached out to feel Shen Baiyi’s forehead.
Shen Baiyi dodged, not letting her touch.
Seeing this, Tang Tong chuckled. “Still the same, huh? Can’t even stand being touched?”
Hearing this, Shen Baiyi’s eyes brightened slightly. She quickly glanced at her sister, her beautiful eyes seeming to speak volumes.
Zheng Yao naturally understood the underlying meaning of those words and felt Shen Baiyi’s gaze, but she resisted turning to meet her eyes, instead looking at the woman. “Hello, I’m Zheng Yao.”
Only then did Tang Tong’s gaze fall upon Zheng Yao. She stared for a few seconds, noticing how closely Shen Baiyi stood beside her, appearing very intimate. She raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Baiyi, who is this?”
“I’m her sister,” Zheng Yao said with a smile.
“Her sister?” Tang Tong’s eyebrows lifted slightly, her expression cooling. “Relatives from her granduncle’s side? Doesn’t look like it. Could you be her biological sister from her birth parents?”
At this, Zheng Yao’s eyes flickered.
It seemed this Sister Xiaotong knew quite a bit about Shen Baiyi’s affairs.
“No,” Shen Baiyi said stiffly, her gaze toward the other woman filled with hostility and wariness. She subtly stepped forward, shielding her sister behind her.
“Protecting her like that guess you’re really not,” Tang Tong mused thoughtfully. “But Baiyi, what’s with that look you’re giving me? I’m your elder, don’t you know anything about respecting your seniors?”
Shen Zhuhao, standing nearby, added quietly, “Sister Yi seems to have changed a lot.”
“I lost my memory,” Shen Baiyi said flatly. “Thank you for helping me before. If you need anything, I can give you a sum of…”
Before she could finish, her sister gave her hand a sharp squeeze.
Shen Baiyi winced in pain and instinctively stopped speaking.
“It’s almost mealtime. How about we have a meal together?” Zheng Yao suggested with a gentle smile.
Hearing about the memory loss, Tang Tong’s expression shifted repeatedly before finally settling on Zheng Yao’s face, her wariness growing. “Fine.”
As a local, Tang Tong led them to a private restaurant.
Clearly, she was a regular and had likely brought Shen Baiyi here often. The owner smiled at the sight of Shen Baiyi. “Isn’t this Baiyi? Haven’t seen you in a while. What have you been up to lately?”
Shen Baiyi pressed her lips together and remained silent.
Tang Tong answered instead, “What else? She’s a college student studying, of course.”
She then guided the two to a round table.
“Have a seat.”
In familiar territory, Tang Tong appeared more composed. She sat down casually, observing the two before her, and began introducing herself. “I’m Tang Tong. Baiyi used to call me Sister Xiaotong.”
Zheng Yao nodded, not questioning this.
Then, Tang Tong’s tone turned confrontational. “I see Baiyi as my own sister. Miss Zheng, care to explain how she lost her memory?”
Hearing her speak to her sister in such an accusatory tone, Shen Baiyi’s expression darkened instantly. “I lost my memory from falling down the stairs,” she said firmly. “My sister took me in out of pity, cared for me, and has helped me tremendously during this time.”
As she spoke, her gaze fell upon Tang Tong: “Although I don’t know what my relationship with Miss Tang was like before, I still appreciate your concern for me. However, my sister isn’t the one who hurt me, so there’s no need for Miss Tang to direct your hostility toward her.”
Before losing her memory, she had preferred to seek out her sister in an unfamiliar place rather than ask for help from this so-called “Sister Tong.” Moreover, the lost information form had listed her sister’s contact details.
After meeting, when she avoided the other’s touch, the other’s attitude and words made it clear that even before losing her memory, her relationship with this “Sister Tong” couldn’t have been particularly close.
“How rare to hear you say so much at once,” Tang Tong said with a faint smile. “Being so protective it seems you really like her.”
She dropped her authoritative demeanor and became much more amiable, voluntarily sharing many stories about Shen Baiyi’s past.
But it was hard to tell what was true and what wasn’t.
From Tang Tong’s words, Zheng Yao learned more about Shen Baiyi.
It seemed Shen Baiyi had no particular affection for Shen Sanguang. From a very young age, she had been self-reliant, digging up medicinal herbs on the mountains, picking wild bayberries, planting flowers and vegetables, all were ways Shen Baiyi earned money.
When she grew older and started school, realizing she had good grades, she began doing homework for other children.
She always came up with many ways to make money.
Tang Tong had actually known about Shen Baiyi even before the fight incident. It started when she discovered her younger sister was spending all her time on her phone and watching TV, yet her homework was always completed.
Though the handwriting looked similar and the accuracy gradually improved in layers, during exams her true level was exposed her results were even worse than before.
Tang Tong grew suspicious and eventually uncovered that her sister had hired a ghostwriter.
Upon learning the other party was the top student in her grade, Tang Tong had an idea. She offered Shen Baiyi a higher price to hire her to supervise her sister’s studies and tutor her.
From then on, Tang Tong treated Shen Baiyi like her own younger sister, giving her everything her biological sister had.
Later, she realized Shen Baiyi always seemed to be short on money, especially after her father brought a stepmother home.
Through her sister, Tang Tong learned that Shen Baiyi not only had to earn money for her own education but also had to support her father and stepmother.
So when Tang Tong heard that Shen Baiyi’s father and stepmother had died, she was quite happy for her.
She just never expected that even after death, her father would still cause her trouble. That compensation money became a coveted prize, with many people eyeing it.
That day when Shen Baiyi came to the internet cafe, she had actually come to find Tang Tong, to help subdue a troublesome customer, making Tang Tong owe her a favor first, so that subsequent discussions would go more smoothly.
With the college entrance exams approaching, Shen Baiyi’s granduncle’s family kept pestering her relentlessly. So the broken bone was intentional Shen Baiyi had planned to take a half-year leave from school to deal with that family’s matters first.
She also intended to make a big scene so everyone would know the compensation money was no longer with her.
From Tang Tong’s account, it seemed she had always been like an older sister helping Shen Baiyi.
Zheng Yao listened attentively but didn’t take everything at face value. In the end, she casually asked, “Baiyi has been staying with me for almost five months now. Weren’t you curious about her whereabouts during this time?”
Tang Tong’s expression stiffened.
Soon, she composed herself: “Ah, with so many matters lately, I’ve been extremely busy. Baiyi is both courageous and resourceful – I feel quite at ease with her outside.”
Zheng Yao gave a hollow smile: “Is that so? If it were your own younger sister who had been missing for five months, could you remain so unruffled, Miss Tang?”
Tang Tong choked, instantly rendered speechless.
Of course not.
If it were her own sister, she would have panicked after just half a day without contact, likely becoming so anxious she’d be running in circles, wishing she could immediately report to the police to search for her.
“Anyway, if it were me and I couldn’t reach Baiyi, I would definitely try every possible means to find her.” Zheng Yao smiled gently, countering Tang Tong’s previous aggressiveness with soft words.
Seeing Tang Tong’s unpleasant expression, she felt satisfied. Taking Shen Baiyi’s hand to stand up, she said: “If there’s nothing else, we’ll take our leave now. I’ve already paid the bill. Thank you for your care of Baiyi, Miss Tang.”
–
On the way back to the hotel, Shen Baiyi could clearly sense her sister’s displeasure. She could roughly guess the reason, so she didn’t dare make a sound the entire time.
Only when they reached the room door did Zheng Yao turn to face Shen Baiyi: “Come to my room. I have something to discuss with you.”
Shen Baiyi’s heart instantly tightened. She pressed her lips together: “Alright.”
Following cautiously inside, she saw her sister sitting on the bed staring directly at her. Her heart clenched, and she instinctively straightened her posture: “Sister.”
