My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 67
Zheng Yao said coldly and indifferently, “I prefer sleeping alone.”
“Sister, there are many joys in sleeping together.” Shen Baiyi seemed to imply something, her gaze carrying a different emotion as she looked at her.
“Shen Baiyi!” Zheng Yao’s expression changed abruptly, never expecting Shen Baiyi to be so bold as to tease her!
“What’s wrong, sister?” Shen Baiyi appeared startled, her face showing confusion and grievance. “If we sleep together, we can watch movies, and when we can’t sleep, we can lie down and chat.”
Zheng Yao: “…”
Her face stiffened, completely unaware that the “joys” Shen Baiyi referred to were of this nature.
“Go to sleep.”
She responded stiffly, completely unaware that her tone had lost all its earlier assertiveness, her entire demeanor radiating guilt.
Walking into the room with awkward, synchronized steps, she stiffly closed the door before covering her face and silently screaming without any regard for her image.
Ahhhhhhh!
Her mind was now filled with all sorts of chaotic thoughts! Was her brain only filled with those colorful, inappropriate ideas? And directed at someone who just graduated from high school?
A mix of moral guilt and betrayal washed over her.
Zheng Yao took a deep breath, staring blankly at her suitcase.
In truth, during this time spent with Shen Baiyi, she had gradually let go of her reservations, finding it increasingly difficult to associate Shen Baiyi with Bai Yuanzhu and Shen Sanguang. This led to a certain thought growing stronger and stronger within her.
She wanted to keep Shen Baiyi by her side.
She wanted to hold onto that exclusive favor forever.
But this was wrong. Even setting aside the fact that Shen Baiyi was Shen Sanguang’s daughter, their genders and age difference made them highly incompatible.
Society’s acceptance of homosexuality had improved compared to previous years, but it hadn’t reached the point where most people could treat it with normalcy.
Many still resisted or even discriminated against it, and plenty would view them through tinted lenses.
Shen Baiyi was five years younger than her young and inexperienced. But Zheng Yao should know better; she was the older one. If Shen Baiyi didn’t understand propriety, could she follow suit?
If the two of them were to be together, she would undoubtedly face more condemnation.
How troublesome.?
She sighed softly, her entire spirit deflating.
–
Over the next few days, the two visited nearby attractions, stopping and going along the way. It wasn’t until they settled in a certain county town and Zheng Yao saw the somewhat familiar architecture that she suddenly realized Shen Baiyi’s hometown was around here.
In some remote mountain village within this county.
She looked at the completely unaware Shen Baiyi and suddenly asked, “Shen Baiyi, are you curious about your past?”
“Not really.” Shen Baiyi shook her head, asking cautiously, “Why do you ask?”
“Never mind.” Hearing this, Zheng Yao said no more.
Since Shen Baiyi didn’t want to explore her past, she wouldn’t force her to reminisce.
But neither of them expected Shen Baiyi to run into an acquaintance in this small county town.
The person was a non-mainstream boy with dyed yellow hair, a cigarette firmly perched on his lips as he spoke: “Whoa! Isn’t this Sister Yi?! Everyone’s been worried sick! Sister Yi, you look like you’re doing pretty well for yourself!”
Shen Baiyi’s face instantly changed.
The boy then shifted his gaze to Zheng Yao, his eyes lighting up: “And who’s this sister?”
“You’ve mistaken me for someone else.”
Shen Baiyi quickly stepped forward, blocking that line of sight.
After speaking, she grabbed Zheng Yao’s hand and was about to make a quick escape when the other person laughed: “What nonsense are you talking about, Yi-jie? I could forget anyone but you, you’re like my second mother. We even share the same surname Shen. I’m Shen Zhuhao, remember?”
“Just recently on your father’s anniversary, it was our group who helped you pay respects!”
Zheng Yao narrowed her eyes, clasped Shen Baiyi’s hand in return, and used her gaze to stop Shen Baiyi from trying to pull her away.
“Sister.” Shen Baiyi’s heart was in turmoil, her face showing distress. “I don’t want to listen to him.”
Her expression was pitiful, her tone equally so. Zheng Yao had seen this act of hers many times and wasn’t particularly moved, but the one called Shen Zhuhao clearly hadn’t witnessed it before, he was so shocked his jaw nearly dropped.
“Yi-jie! Have you been possessed by a ghost?! Do you know how worried Sister Xiaotong has been since you left?” Shen Zhuhao’s cigarette fell to the ground as he spoke while pulling out his phone. “Oh my god, this is terrifying. Yi-jie, don’t leave yet. Sister Xiaotong is nearby, I’ll have her come over right away to see!”
Sister Xiaotong?
Zheng Yao’s eyes flickered.
Seeing that he was about to call for backup, Shen Baiyi opened her mouth to speak when her wrist was suddenly gripped tightly, halting all movement.
Shen Baiyi’s heart raced wildly.
She pleaded almost desperately: “Sister!”
Noticing her tension and anxiety, Zheng Yao suppressed her own inexplicable feelings and comforted her: “It’s fine.”
Though just two short words, they calmed Shen Baiyi’s heart considerably. She couldn’t help stealing a glance at her sister’s expression and softly added: “Sister, I truly don’t remember what I was like before, but I can guarantee that the current me is definitely the Shen Baiyi you’re familiar with.”
This person was clearly someone she’d known from her past too. Now that it had come to light before her sister, she could no longer hide it from her.
Thinking this, the gloom in her eyes deepened further.
Shen Zhuhao, having finished his call, wore an excited expression: “Yi-jie, Sister Xiaotong will be here soon.”
Then he turned to Zheng Yao, this time with hostility in his gaze: “Yi-jie, why have you recognized another sister? Sister Xiaotong only acknowledges you as her little sister.”
Shen Baiyi’s face instantly changed: “What nonsense are you spouting?!”
She then anxiously looked at Zheng Yao: “Sister, I only recognize you.”
Zheng Yao felt rather complicated.
Given Shen Baiyi’s living environment, it was sometimes unavoidable for her to associate with these dyed-haired youths. That she could grow into such an outstanding person without developing bad habits showed she knew her limits, she hadn’t been corrupted by bad company or picked up a host of vices.
So she should understand Shen Baiyi, even feel heartache for her, cherish her.
That was the rational approach, but the thought of Shen Baiyi sweet-talking another “sister” during times she didn’t know about left a somewhat unpleasant taste in Zheng Yao’s heart.
“Hey, Yi—”
The dyed-haired youth tried to interject, but barely started when Shen Baiyi sharply turned to glare at him, her voice icy: “Shut up!”
Her look suggested she might rush over and hit him any second.
Shen Zhuhao immediately fell silent. He’d been beaten by Shen Baiyi before and witnessed her reckless fighting style. When her temper flared like this, he didn’t dare make another sound.
The atmosphere instantly grew tense.
Zheng Yao cast a subtle glance at Shen Baiyi before turning her gaze toward the nearby milk tea shop. “Don’t stand outside in this scorching sun. Shall we go inside and sit?”
Shen Baiyi’s face tightened with nervousness. “Is sister feeling hot?”
“A little.” Zheng Yao nodded.
Without hesitation, Shen Baiyi followed her into the milk tea shop. The air-conditioned interior felt like an entirely different world compared to outside.
Shen Zhuhao trailed in after them, wearing an awkward smile. “What would Sister Yi like to drink? The usual?”
“What kind of milk tea does she like?” Zheng Yao grew curious.
In her memory, Shen Baiyi seemed to enjoy whatever milk tea she ordered, never showing particular preferences.
Shen Zhuhao raised his eyebrows. “Sister Yi hates overly sweet drinks. She always gets passion fruit tea.”
Passion fruit tea.
Zheng Yao pressed her lips together. Passion fruit tea happened to be her least favorite beverage, which was why she had never ordered it for Shen Baiyi. She had always assumed Shen Baiyi shared her dislike for it.
“Two passion fruit teas, please.” Suppressing her emotions, she placed the order before turning to Shen Zhuhao. “What would you like?”
“You’re buying me milk tea?” Shen Zhuhao’s eyes lit up. “I’ll take the deluxe bucket size!”
Perhaps because Zheng Yao treated him to drinks, Shen Zhuhao’s hostility vanished instantly. Sitting opposite the two women, he fawned, “Miss, you’re as beautiful as a celebrity. Could I add your WeChat?”
No sooner had he finished speaking than someone stepped hard on his foot.
The merciless grinding made Shen Zhuhao yelp in pain, nearly jumping from his seat.
Zheng Yao looked at Shen Baiyi.
Noticing her sister’s gaze, Shen Baiyi finally released her foot. Meeting Zheng Yao’s eyes, she said innocently, “Sister, he seems mentally unstable. We should stay away from him.”
Zheng Yao instinctively wanted to scold her for messing around, but remembering Shen Zhuhao’s reverent tone when speaking of Shen Baiyi, she swallowed her words. She didn’t want to embarrass Shen Baiyi in front of her “subordinate,” so she simply said sternly, “Let’s wait a bit longer. Isn’t Sister Xiaotong on her way?”
“Sister!” Shen Baiyi murmured.
“What are you afraid of?” Zheng Yao arched an eyebrow. “From what he said, you and this Sister Xiaotong have a good relationship. She dotes on you and must have helped you many times before. Don’t you want to see her?”
Shen Baiyi fell silent.
If she said no, would her sister think she was ungrateful?
She hesitated, unwilling to let her sister dislike her.
“Sister Yi, you!” Shen Zhuhao’s eyes watered from the pain, but one look at Shen Baiyi’s expression made him swallow his complaints. He took out his phone and began typing furiously.
“Did you just graduate from high school?” Zheng Yao initiated conversation.
“Not at all. I dropped out after middle school,” Shen Zhuhao shook his head. “I’ve been working as an internet cafe attendant for several years now.”
“Really?” Zheng Yao pondered. If Shen Baiyi hadn’t been academically outstanding, perhaps she would have dropped out early too?
She couldn’t help asking further, “How did you and Baiyi meet?”
As she spoke, her hand resting at her side brushed against Shen Baiyi’s cold fingers. She gently grasped them, giving a reassuring squeeze.
Shen Baiyi immediately clasped back. Feeling the dampness in her palm, Zheng Yao’s eyes flickered – Shen Baiyi seemed to sense the differences between her past and present self.
When she first saw that this person knew her, her immediate reaction was to pull her away rather than feel curious.
Why?
Was it because Shen Baiyi had also encountered people who recognized her without her knowledge?
So, she was afraid that she would discover another side of her?
Thinking of this, she sighed softly. Shen Baiyi seemed too concerned and appeared very insecure. If she didn’t make her stance clear, Shen Baiyi would probably remain in a state of constant fear and worry.
Just the thought of it made her feel exhausted.
Shen Zhuhai, with tears in his eyes, said, “There was a disturbance at the internet cafe before. The person went on a rampage and almost stabbed me to death. It was Sister Yi who kicked that person away and stood in front of me with her small frame. I’ll never forget it.”
“Mm, well done.” Zheng Yao nodded, looking at Shen Baiyi with approval and affirmation. “Brave and righteous, always ready to help.”
