My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 60
Shen Baiyi was at an age where she loved having fun, yet Zheng Yao had declined the travel invitation from Zhuang Yang and the others on her behalf without even asking for her opinion. Perhaps Shen Baiyi actually wanted to go on a trip.
What she didn’t expect was Shen Baiyi’s strong reaction: “No!”
“No?” Zheng Yao paused while tending to the flowers and turned to look at Shen Baiyi. “Why not?”
But Shen Baiyi only shook her head firmly: “I don’t want to leave you, sister.”
Then she looked at her pitifully: “Didn’t you forgive me already?”
Hearing this, Zheng Yao realized Shen Baiyi might have misunderstood her meaning. She probably thought Zheng Yao was planning to send her away temporarily.
“Really don’t want to go?”
Zheng Yao couldn’t resist being mischievous.
Shen Baiyi nodded vigorously: “No!”
Zheng Yao sighed and stuffed the flowers back into Shen Baiyi’s hands, deliberately sighing: “Well then, I’ll just have to go traveling alone.”
She successfully watched Shen Baiyi’s expression change dramatically. Seeing her immediately become anxious, Zheng Yao covered her mouth: “Alright, I was just teasing you.”
The action was completely instinctive. When she came to her senses, she saw Shen Baiyi looking at her with pure delight.
Those beautiful eyes stared directly at her.
She really did resemble a little puppy.
She quickly withdrew her hand, pretending to be composed as she started driving. No longer keeping Shen Baiyi in suspense, she said seriously: “In a while, let’s go traveling together.”
Whatever others had, Shen Baiyi should have too.
“Just the two of us?” Shen Baiyi asked.
Zheng Yao’s eyes flickered: “Do you want to invite friends along?”
Shen Baiyi immediately shook her head: “No!”
Zheng Yao nodded: “Then it’ll just be us two.”
Shen Baiyi seemed very excited about the trip, smiling foolishly all the way home. After returning, she even turned into an eager helper, bustling around Zheng Yao.
Eventually, Zheng Yao pushed her away uncomfortably: “Stop hovering around me all the time. Go do your own things.”
Although they had reconciled, those dark feelings in her heart hadn’t changed.
She desired Shen Baiyi.
What they had now was just a fragile peace maintained through her difficult restraint. She didn’t want to break it for the time being. She only needed to hold on for another month or so until Shen Baiyi left for A University. Before that, she wanted to maintain this false “familial relationship.”
Once Shen Baiyi left her life and she had a girlfriend, perhaps she could finally escape this illusion born from lack of love.
“Okay.” Shen Baiyi didn’t cling to her like before. This recent cold war with her sister had made her much more cautious, not daring to take risks anymore.
Several days passed like this. In early July, Zheng Yao’s travel plans finally came to fruition.
Recently, short videos of grass sliding on grasslands had gone viral online, and Zheng Yao was quite taken with the idea. So she decided on visiting the nearest large grassland for their trip.
The day before their departure, Shen Baiyi was extremely excited, constantly busy preparing what to bring.
Zheng Yao, however, was nonchalant: “We can buy anything we need when we get there. No need to bring so much stuff.”
They didn’t need so much baggage for a trip.
As she spoke, she knelt down to examine the contents of Shen Baiyi’s suitcase: “Why are you bringing mosquito repellent?”
“Since mosquitoes love you so much, sister, I brought this to protect you.”
“Hotels usually provide mosquito repellent or mosquito coils,” Zheng Yao said, picking up the first aid kit again with a headache. “We’re going on a vacation, not a jungle adventure. Do we really need to bring this?”
If anything happens outside, we can just call 120. It’s not like we’re going to some remote mountain area with no signal, why would we need these things?
It’s too cumbersome.
“Sis, I want to bring it,” Shen Baiyi sighed.
Zheng Yao had always been more susceptible to soft persuasion than hard demands, especially when she couldn’t resist Shen Baiyi’s pitiful look.
She stood up, avoiding Shen Baiyi’s gaze. “Fine, you can bring it. But don’t expect me to carry your suitcase.”
“Okay,” Shen Baiyi replied, her eyes curving into a smile. “I’ll carry it myself, and I can even help you with yours.”
She had always been quite strong.
However, neither Shen Baiyi nor Zheng Yao had anticipated that Shen Baiyi would fall ill on the very first day of their trip.
Perhaps the air conditioning on the high-speed train was too cold, because as soon as they got off, Shen Baiyi wilted. She didn’t even have the strength to carry her suitcase, let alone walk.
She was drenched in cold sweat, her face pale.
Zheng Yao was alarmed. She reached out to feel Shen Baiyi’s forehead and realized she was burning up so much that it felt like an egg could be cooked on it.
“You have a fever,” she said, pulling Shen Baiyi back as she tried to unpack. Zheng Yao was annoyed; Shen Baiyi had hidden her discomfort again, only mentioning that she felt a bit carsick.
Shen Baiyi seemed surprised too. She pressed her lips together, her mood sinking. “I’m sorry, Sis.”
“Why are you apologizing for being sick?” Zheng Yao didn’t understand her reaction. Quickly checking the nearby hospitals on her phone, she opened a ride-hailing app. “Let’s go to the hospital.”
Shen Baiyi’s feverish hand gripped hers.
“Sis, I brought fever reducers.”
“You should still see a doctor,” Zheng Yao disagreed, looking at her disapprovingly.
“Can we go only if the fever doesn’t go down?” Shen Baiyi pleaded pitifully. “I don’t want to spend my vacation in a hospital.”
Zheng Yao: “…”
Zheng Yao had no choice but to give in.
Fortunately, Shen Baiyi had packed thoroughly, with a thermometer, fever reducers, and other common medicines on hand.
Although Shen Baiyi looked terrible, her temperature wasn’t dangerously high, it was only a low-grade fever.
Zheng Yao boiled water and made her take the medicine.
In this condition, Zheng Yao couldn’t bear to leave Shen Baiyi alone in her room. But when she tried to switch to a double room at the front desk, she was told the hotel was fully booked with no vacancies.
It was summer break, and the tourist season was in full swing.
Zheng Yao had no choice but to return disappointed.
Not only this hotel, but even the nearby ones had no available double rooms. When she had originally booked the rooms, she had deliberately chosen two separate rooms some distance apart to avoid Shen Baiyi coming to sleep with her again.
Now, she was truly hoist with her own petard.
“Sis, I’ll be fine on my own,” Shen Baiyi sighed, noticing Zheng Yao’s dilemma. “You don’t need to worry about me. I’m not as fragile as you think.”
Zheng Yao rarely responded with sarcasm: “Not that fragile? Just getting a fever from a train ride, right?”
Shen Baiyi fell silent.
Zheng Yao was as agitated as a bristling cat, but in the end, she decided to stay in the same room with Shen Baiyi.
She was worried about Shen Baiyi, this silly girl who would take cold showers even after bumping her head. No one knew whether Shen Baiyi would develop a high fever in the middle of the night. If she didn’t keep her within sight, Zheng Yao wouldn’t be able to sleep peacefully.
Rather than staying alone in her room overthinking, it was better to just live together.
It was already afternoon, and Shen Baiyi wasn’t feeling well, so Zheng Yao didn’t rush to go out and have fun. Instead, she firmly made Shen Baiyi lie down to rest while she quietly packed her things and adjusted their plans for the rest of the day.
Originally, they had planned to explore the nearby area in the afternoon and evening to sample the local cuisine, but now it seemed they could only rest at the hotel. They would also have to research food delivery options to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
After taking her medicine, Shen Baiyi quickly fell asleep. She had a slight cold, and her breathing was much heavier than usual as she slept, accompanied by soft snores. She was sleeping so deeply that even when Zheng Yao made noise several times, she didn’t wake up.
It wasn’t until Zheng Yao finished her shower that she saw Shen Baiyi sitting listlessly on the edge of the bed, her face full of gloom.
This was the first time Zheng Yao had seen Shen Baiyi like this.
She looked like a little mushroom growing in a dark corner, radiating resentment all over.
Perhaps hearing her footsteps, Shen Baiyi quickly looked up. The gloom on her dissipated somewhat, but she still seemed listless, her voice tinged with dejection: “Sister.”
“What’s wrong?” Zheng Yao walked over and touched her forehead again. “Are you still feeling unwell?”
Shen Baiyi quietly took a breath.
Sister smells so good.
As Zheng Yao’s hand approached, Shen Baiyi leaned back slightly to avoid it.
Zheng Yao froze, completely unprepared for Shen Baiyi actually avoiding her.
“Sister, I’ve been sweating a lot,” Shen Baiyi sighed. “I smell awful.”
“Not at all,” Zheng Yao denied. She couldn’t smell anything.
“I want to take a shower,” Shen Baiyi looked up, tugging at her clothes, her face full of frustration. “My clothes are all wet, and the bedsheets and duvet cover need to be changed too.”
Zheng Yao looked over.
Shen Baiyi wasn’t exaggerating. She really had sweated so much that the bedsheet was damp, and her hair was soaked.
It looked uncomfortable.
Zheng Yao couldn’t bring herself to tell her not to shower and only reminded her, “Don’t take too long.”
“Okay.” A smile instantly appeared on Shen Baiyi’s face.
Seeing her delighted expression, Zheng Yao couldn’t help but rub her nose. Shen Baiyi was far too easily satisfied.
But it had to be said, Shen Baiyi’s smile had the magic to dispel all negative emotions. Zheng Yao’s mood seemed to brighten along with it.
While Shen Baiyi was showering, Zheng Yao had someone change the bedsheets and duvet cover and ordered the dinner she had spent half the day researching.
But Shen Baiyi was taking an unusually long time in the bathroom.
Thinking this, Zheng Yao glanced over.
Still feeling uneasy, she walked over and knocked on the door. “Shen Baiyi, are you done showering?”
“I’m done,” Shen Baiyi said cautiously. “Sister, I forgot to bring my underwear.”
After saying this, Shen Baiyi bit her lip.
This really wasn’t intentional.
She and her sister had finally maintained their current relationship, and for now, she didn’t want to take any risks or test her sister’s limits.
But she must have been too groggy from sleep earlier she had only remembered to bring her outer clothes and completely forgotten her underwear.
Outside the door, Zheng Yao fell into a brief silence.
Soon, she turned and walked toward Shen Baiyi’s suitcase, reassuring her, “Wait, I’ll get it for you.”
Worried that Shen Baiyi might catch a chill, she moved quickly, grabbing clothes at random before knocking on the bathroom door. “Come open the door.”
“The door isn’t—”
Thud!
“Shen Baiyi?!”
Startled by the loud noise from inside, Zheng Yao’s expression instantly changed. Without a second thought, she twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open.
Inside the bathroom, damp, steamy mist swirled.
Shen Baiyi, completely naked, lay on the floor, seemingly motionless.
Zheng Yao’s heart pounded like thunder as she rushed in. “Shen Baiyi?”
Afraid to touch her, her voice trembled. “Where did you get hurt?”
In such a moment, she dared not move Shen Baiyi recklessly.
“Don’t be scared, I’ll call for an ambulance.”
Just as she was about to stand up to fetch her phone, a strong grip clamped around her wrist.
“I… I’m fine.”
Shen Baiyi’s voice carried an unnatural tone.
In her panic, Zheng Yao didn’t notice this detail. Her hands fluttered uncertainly before finally settling on Shen Baiyi’s arm. “Let me help you up?”
