My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 48
Shen Baiyi appeared utterly harmless.
But Lin Weiwei would no longer easily believe that. She still vividly remembered the suffocating sensation of having her neck gripped by Shen Baiyi in the restroom.
This was no docile cat.
It was a tiger, a wolf, possessing formidable attacking power, one careless moment and she could tear a chunk of flesh from you.
Instead, she grew wary and took a step back.
Seeing Lin Weiwei’s reaction, Shen Baiyi’s eyes cooled. Her tone was soft: “See, even if I agreed, you wouldn’t dare be with me. So why bring it up?”
As she spoke, she put her phone away and looked up at Lin Weiwei: “Don’t provoke me. I’m crazy, as you well know, right?”
That demeanor made Lin Weiwei want to retreat. Her expression shifted several times before she ultimately fled in embarrassed defeat.
No sooner had she left than Zheng Yao emerged from the restroom.
Shen Baiyi’s face instantly brightened with a smile as she stepped forward: “Sister.”
But Zheng Yao’s expression was grim: “I just saw you talking with that girl.”
She looked seriously at Shen Baiyi: “Is she the one you mentioned before? The one who wanted to date you?”
Hearing this, Shen Baiyi was slightly surprised but quickly suppressed her emotions. She nodded: “It’s her.”
Shen Baiyi’s frank admission made Zheng Yao overthink: “Don’t hang out with her.”
It wasn’t just the other’s appearance that displeased her, more than that, it was the feeling she got upon seeing her. No matter how she looked, the other girl didn’t seem like a good person. She trusted her first instinct.
Not to mention there was the incident before the college entrance exams where she had encouraged Shen Baiyi to date.
“Okay.” Shen Baiyi agreed readily, pointing in a direction. “Sister, I want to go play over there.”
Shen Baiyi rarely took the initiative to ask for anything. Zheng Yao looked over, it was an arcade, quite lively.
“Sure.” She agreed readily, feeling somewhat proud. “I’m really good at claw machines.”
She had just casually boasted, but Shen Baiyi seemed to take it to heart, immediately pulling her to the claw machine upon arrival: “Sister, I want this one.”
It was an adorably charming pink pig.
Zheng Yao curled her lips: “Wait here.”
After exchanging some game tokens, she effortlessly retrieved the cute little pig. Handing it to Shen Baiyi, she lifted her chin slightly: “Anything else you want?”
But Shen Baiyi’s next move stunned her.
She was hugged by Shen Baiyi again.
A soft yet undeniable body crashed into her embrace. Zheng Yao’s breath instinctively lightened. Before she could regain her composure, the other had already stepped back, her voice tinged with laughter:
“Thank you, sister!”
Zheng Yao was somewhat distracted.
It was quite obvious her subsequent attempts at the claw machine ended in miserable failure. After spending most of their game tokens, Shen Baiyi still held only the pink, charming pig in her arms.
“Sister.” Noticing her sister’s distraction, Shen Baiyi tugged at her sleeve. “I already have the pig. Let’s go play something else.”
“No.” Zheng Yao grew stubborn, slightly annoyed. “I refuse to believe it. I have to get it.”
A mere plush toy had cost her so many game tokens, she refused to believe she couldn’t grab it.
She seemed to have gotten stubborn, standing motionless in front of the claw machine.
Shen Baiyi sighed softly and obediently stood to the side, holding the pink pig.
Fortunately, Zheng Yao eventually managed to grab the plush toy, a gray wolf baring its teeth, which still looked somewhat cute.
Compared to the little pig in Shen Baiyi’s arms, the big gray wolf in Zheng Yao’s hands was worth many times more.
She gave the wolf a few angry punches before turning to Shen Baiyi. “What do you want to play?”
She exchanged some more game tokens, trying to hide her discomfort as she stuffed them all into Shen Baiyi’s hands, forcing a calm tone. “Go ahead and play.”
Once she got stubborn, it was hard for her to give up without achieving her goal.
In the past, she hadn’t thought much of it, but now, between her and Shen Baiyi, she was the “adult.” Yet her insistence on grabbing the gray wolf clearly wasn’t the behavior of a mature adult.
“I don’t know how to play those games,” Shen Baiyi tugged at her. “Sister, you’re so skilled. Can you teach me?”
“Fine.”
Zheng Yao reluctantly agreed.
She knew a bit about other arcade games, though she wasn’t particularly proficient. Still, teaching a beginner should be more than enough.
But Zheng Yao hadn’t expected that Shen Baiyi, who excelled in academics, would be so inept at arcade games.
She was a complete gaming disaster. By the end, Zheng Yao couldn’t help but grab Shen Baiyi’s shoulders and shake her. “Snap out of it! You crashed into the wall again!”
Shen Baiyi felt dizzy and guilty from the shaking. She hadn’t expected it to be so difficult.
She was completely unfamiliar with these electronic games.
Just as she was about to apologize, her sister released her and muttered to herself, “Forget it. Everyone has things they’re not good at.”
Shen Baiyi’s breathing softened.
“That’s normal,” Zheng Yao, having calmed down, finally remembered that the person in front of her wasn’t one of her peers. She offered an awkward consolation. “No one is perfect. I’m not very skilled at this either, so don’t take it to heart.”
“Sister, I’ll practice seriously in the future,” Shen Baiyi said earnestly. “When I start working and earn money, I’ll bring you back here to play. Is that okay?”
It was good that Shen Baiyi had ambition.
Zheng Yao nodded without hesitation. “Sure, I’ll look forward to the day you bring me here to play.”
She agreed, but she didn’t take it too seriously.
Whether it was Shen Baiyi earning money or bringing her back to play, both seemed like distant possibilities to Zheng Yao.
Seeing that the game tokens were all used up, she stood up. “Do you want to play more?”
Shen Baiyi shook her head. “I’m a bit tired.”
Zheng Yao was actually a little tired too, so she nodded. “Alright, let’s go back then.”
Hearing this, Shen Baiyi agreed. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed other couples holding hands. Her heart stirred, and she stepped forward to hook her finger around her sister’s.
But her sister pulled her hand back too quickly, like a startled bird. “What are you doing?”
Shen Baiyi said bluntly, “I want to hold your hand.”
As she spoke, a look of unease and caution appeared on her face. “Is that okay, Sister?”
“You’re too old for that. No holding hands.” But Zheng Yao didn’t soften this time. She hardened her heart and refused, raising both hands to her chest to hold the gray wolf. Expressionless, she said, “Walk on your own.”
“Okay.”
Disappointment was written all over Shen Baiyi’s face. Although she and her sister had already shared many intimate moments today, if they were to hold hands on the way back, she could already imagine her sister’s shy, blushing expression.
At this thought, a smile unconsciously tugged at the corners of her lips.
Poking the pink pig plushie, she said obediently, “Holding hands with the piggy is just as good.”
Zheng Yao was taken aback by these words.
What did she mean by “holding hands with the piggy is just as good”?
“What do you mean? Are you treating the pig as me?” She raised an eyebrow. Was this some roundabout way of calling her a pig?
Shen Baiyi didn’t answer directly, instead looking up innocently and saying, “The piggy is very cute.”
As she spoke, she lifted the pink pig and kissed it: “Sister, I really like it.”
“…”
Zheng Yao averted her gaze.
She clenched her fists, took a silent deep breath, and slowly exhaled. Seriously, what did Shen Baiyi mean by this?
Was she overthinking it?
Just as she was wrestling with these thoughts, Shen Baiyi walked past her and took the lead: “Sister, let’s hurry back.”
Right, they really should hurry back.
Zheng Yao followed in silence.
She wasn’t feeling quite herself. Perhaps she needed a good night’s sleep.
–
Heat. Humidity.
It felt like floating in the ocean, rising and falling with the waves. Zheng Yao struggled to swim toward the shore when suddenly something tangled around her ankle, pulling her downward until she abruptly fell into a scorching embrace.
What followed wasn’t the relief of survival, but the unease of facing unknown danger.
She tried to break free, but the hold only tightened. Her breath was stolen away as something foreign forced its way into her mouth, moving with aggressive dominance.
When she attempted to push the intruder out with her tongue, it only provoked the other party, who captured her delicate tongue and drew it outward like soft flesh pried from a shell, only to be devoured moments later.
Then the scene shifted abruptly, transporting them directly to a bed.
It was like something from a movie, except she was the protagonist.
The discarded clothes, the scorching breaths, and the overwhelming sense of invasion pressing down on her jolted her awake almost instantly.
The room was dark and silent.
This was her room, her bed, and she was alone.
Realizing this, Zheng Yao’s breathing gradually slowed. She lifted an arm to rest on her forehead, feeling a headache coming on.
She must have been too deprived.
Spring had already passed, why was she still having such dreams?
Finding a girlfriend was becoming urgent.
–
The next day, Zheng Yao overslept.
By the time she woke up, Shen Baiyi had already left for work at the restaurant.
[Shen Baiyi]: Sister, I’ve gone to work. There’s breakfast in the kitchen make sure to eat it!
Seeing that kiss emoticon, Zheng Yao’s face flushed hot. She slapped her phone face down on the table.
What was with young people these days?
Sending everything and anything?
After calming down for a good while, she finally picked up her phone to reply to Shen Baiyi: Okay, I’ll pick you up tonight.
She remembered Shen Baiyi got off work at 7 PM.
After finishing breakfast and lounging on the sofa petting the cat, Zheng Yao suddenly realized that Shen Baiyi was probably already assisting in the restaurant kitchen by now.
Images of Shen Baiyi bustling about, carrying plates and washing dishes, flashed through her mind. Zheng Yao drew a sharp breath.
Why did she feel this sense of guilt, as if she were exploiting Shen Baiyi? Shen Baiyi was out there working tirelessly to support them, while she stayed home enjoying the air conditioning, sipping cold drinks, and lounging around with the cat?
Just thinking about it made her feel utterly excessive.
It’s really worrying.
Just as she was wondering if she should go to the hotel to check on Shen Baiyi, a message from Dr. Zhuang happened to come through.
Quite coincidentally, it was an invitation to dinner.
Zheng Yao’s eyes flickered thoughtfully.
She scrolled up through her chat history with Dr. Zhuang and realized they had been communicating rather frequently lately.
Most of the time, it was Dr. Zhuang who initiated the conversations.
Sometimes they discussed her younger sisters’ studies, other times they talked about the two little ones, and occasionally it was just Dr. Zhuang sharing trivial daily matters with her.
Previously, she had thought Dr. Zhuang might want to be friends, but now with her mind suddenly enlightened, she began to wonder more. Could it be that Dr. Zhuang preferred the same gender and wanted to date her?
But there was no evidence for this, and it was highly possible this was just a delusion born of narcissism, so it was hard to say for sure.
After much deliberation, she still accepted Dr. Zhuang’s invitation and arranged to meet at the hotel.
This way, she could conveniently check on Shen Baiyi as well.
