My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 42
For Shen Baiyi, the college entrance exam wasn’t much different from regular tests. She wasn’t particularly nervous, just doing her absolute best on every question.
Her sister indeed didn’t wear a qipao as promised. Though disappointed, Shen Baiyi didn’t press the matter further.
After all, even without the qipao, she would still adore her sister endlessly.
Her sister looked beautiful in anything.
When the final exam ended, a light rain was falling outside. Students emerging from the exam hall were going wild, cheering in the rain, with some bold couples even sharing passionate kisses right there.
Shen Baiyi hurried toward the exit.
She knew her sister was waiting outside.
The thought made her wish she had extra legs to reach her sister faster and not keep her waiting.
Rushing out of school, she spotted her sister immediately and froze.
Her sister looked stunning today.
She was utterly transfixed.
Only when someone thrust a microphone in her face excitedly asking, “Classmate, as the first examinee out, do you have any words for everyone?” did she snap out of it.
Shen Baiyi instinctively moved to push it away, but seeing her sister glance over, she stiffened. Her face flushed crimson as nervousness overtook her: “Do your best.”
After this perfunctory response, she immediately ran to her sister.
“Sister, I’m done!” Shen Baiyi’s gaze lingered on her sister, slightly bashful. “Thank you for wearing the qipao for me. You’re so beautiful.”
“Who said it was for you?” Zheng Yao maintained a stern expression, refusing to admit it. “Someone gave this to me. It was just sitting there, so I wore it casually.”
“Even casually worn, it looks amazing.” Shen Baiyi didn’t expose her sister’s fib. Unable to resist, she hugged her sister, burying her face in that fragrant embrace and earnestly repeating, “Truly beautiful.”
Today’s qipao was pale green with delicate white tassels on the sleeves, lending her an exceptionally gentle aura.
Shen Baiyi’s gaze involuntarily drifted to the prominent curves at her sister’s chest, her face warming slightly.
Looking down, she noticed the high slit revealing a generous expanse of fair thigh. Her expression instantly changed as she reached to adjust the fabric, trying to cover that creamy skin.
“What are you doing?” Zheng Yao asked, puzzled.
“This slit is too high,” Shen Baiyi grumbled unhappily, exposing her sister’s gorgeous long legs.
“Isn’t a high slit good?” Zheng Yao raised an eyebrow. “They say the higher the slit, the higher the scores.”
Shen Baiyi blinked. “But didn’t sister say you weren’t wearing this for me?”
Zheng Yao froze.
Before her sister could grow angry from embarrassment, Shen Baiyi quickly amended, “My mistake, don’t be mad.”
She slipped her hand into the crook of her sister’s arm, smiling brightly. “I’m so thirsty did you bring water?”
An obvious subject change.
Since continuing would only embarrass herself further, Zheng Yao readily took the out: “I did.”
After ushering Shen Baiyi into the car, she handed over prepared milk.
“How did it go?” she couldn’t help asking.
For the past few days, Zheng Yao hadn’t dared to ask, afraid of putting pressure on Shen Baiyi. Now that the exams were over and Shen Baiyi didn’t seem to have done poorly, she couldn’t help but ask.
“Not bad,” Shen Baiyi answered honestly. “About the same as usual.”
If it was about the same as usual, then getting into University A shouldn’t be a problem.
A hint of a smile appeared between Zheng Yao’s brows. “Good. Then take it easy now and wait for your results without worry.”
As she spoke, she entered the navigation. “I’ll take you out for a big meal later.”
Just as she was about to drive off, she suddenly noticed a girl running in the rain, looking somewhat familiar.
“Isn’t that your classmate?”
Zheng Yao gestured toward the girl.
Shen Baiyi looked outside and saw Zhu Xiaofu drenched in the rain. She froze for a moment before nodding. “It’s Zhu Xiaofu.”
Without hesitation, Zheng Yao drove over.
Shen Baiyi rolled down the window and called out to Zhu Xiaofu.
Zhu Xiaofu stopped in her tracks, her eyes lighting up the moment she saw Shen Baiyi. “Baiyi!”
Soon, Zhu Xiaofu, soaked from head to toe, was sitting in the back seat. Without waiting for Shen Baiyi or Zheng Yao to ask, she immediately started venting. “I’m so unlucky! My parents got scammed by an old lady on the way here. Now they’re stuck dealing with her and couldn’t pick me up, so they told me to go home on my own.”
“Scammed?” Shen Baiyi was taken aback.
The term sounded familiar, and she instinctively glanced at her sister.
“Yeah,” Zhu Xiaofu said, exasperated. “She was riding a tricycle and suddenly swerved for no reason, crashing right into my dad’s car. The car got dented, but before my dad could even say anything, she threw herself on the ground, moaning about how much pain she was in, insisting my dad hit her and demanding he take responsibility.”
“What’s being done about it now? Did they call the police?” Zheng Yao asked.
“They did,” Zhu Xiaofu sighed, her expression gloomy. “But my parents still can’t leave. The old lady’s at the hospital getting checked out. I bet she’s just trying to get a free full-body exam out of my dad.”
“Some people just grow old without growing any decency,” Zhu Xiaofu grumbled, clenching her fists. “How shameless can you be, scamming people like that? Taking advantage of others’ kindness to do bad things, what thick skin!”
Shen Baiyi pressed her lips together, her face paling slightly.
She stole another glance at her sister, but Zheng Yao’s expression remained unreadable, only offering comfort. “It’s fine. The police are involved, and there’s surveillance footage. She won’t be able to extort anything.”
“Who knows!” Zhu Xiaofu was still fuming. “That old lady’s so shameless, even the police might not be able to handle her!”
Shen Baiyi lowered her gaze.
In her sister’s eyes, was she just like that old lady clingy and shameless?
It suddenly occurred to her: now that her exams were over, would her sister ask her to leave?
That had been the agreement from the start once her exams were done, she’d move out of her sister’s place.
If she still stayed, wouldn’t that make her just as thick-skinned? How could she keep taking advantage of her sister’s kindness like this?
Since Zhu Xiaofu was soaked and Shen Baiyi, having no umbrella, was also a little wet, Zheng Yao decided to drop Zhu Xiaofu off first before taking Shen Baiyi home to change.
After dinner, when they got back, Zheng Yao noticed Shen Baiyi was unusually quiet.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, deciding to check in.
“Do you hate me, Sister?” Shen Baiyi stopped walking, her gaze fixed on Zheng Yao’s back. Her heart slowly tightened in her chest.
Before the college entrance exams, her sister was her legal guardian. But after the exams, she was no longer a high school student, she was now a fully independent university student.
“Why would you think that?”
Zheng Yao was puzzled and couldn’t help but reflect had her tone been too harsh lately? How could Shen Baiyi think that way?
“I’m just like the old lady Zhu Xiaofu mentioned,” Shen Baiyi said, lowering her gaze. “I’m shamelessly clinging to you, taking advantage of your kindness to do something bad.”
“…”
Zheng Yao fell silent.
Three months ago, she had indeed thought that way.
“You’re not like that old lady,” Zheng Yao finally said after a long pause, sighing softly. “Zhu Xiaofu disliked her, but you’re different. I like you.”
Shen Baiyi froze.
“I like you, so I indulge you clinging to me,” Zheng Yao concluded firmly. “Understand?”
Shen Baiyi’s face turned as red as a boiled shrimp. She hastily lowered her head, not daring to meet her sister’s gaze, and murmured, “I understand.”
Her heart swelled with irrepressible joy and excitement.
Though she had always insisted that her sister doted on her, that her sister liked her, this was the first time Zheng Yao had openly admitted it herself.
Her elation was almost impossible to hide, her face breaking into a wide smile that instantly dispelled the earlier gloom.
Zheng Yao found it amusing, but beneath the amusement, there was a pang of heartache. She suddenly realized this was a sensitive child.
She pondered thoughtfully.
–
Shen Baiyi was indeed sensitive.
Despite Zheng Yao’s declaration of affection, she still lacked a strong sense of security. So as soon as the college entrance exams ended, she put her previous plan into action.
She would capture her sister’s heart through her stomach, making Zheng Yao unable to live without her.
For several days in a row, she busied herself at home preparing various dishes, ensuring Zheng Yao had breakfast, lunch, and dinner made by her own hands.
After a few days of this, her class organized a graduation dinner, forcing Shen Baiyi to eat out.
She was reluctant.
She wasn’t close to most of her classmates, only slightly familiar with Zhuang Yang. She didn’t want to leave her sister behind to dine with a group of near-strangers.
Shen Baiyi sighed softly. “Do I have to go?”
“Yes,” Zheng Yao said firmly. “Xiao Bai, you need to socialize.”
She waved her phone. “While you’re there, add a few more classmates on QQ, and join your class group chat too.”
She hadn’t bought Shen Baiyi a phone earlier, fearing it would distract her from studying. But after the exams, she immediately got her one.
Unfortunately, Shen Baiyi’s contact list was as blank as a sheet of paper. Even the news about the class dinner had reached her only after the homeroom teacher contacted Zheng Yao.
And apparently, they had a class group chat all along.
According to the teacher, when Shen Baiyi first transferred, the group details had been written on the blackboard, with instructions for her to join once she had an account.
But Shen Baiyi had never mentioned it.
Nor had she joined the group.
Her QQ account was pristine, with Zheng Yao as her only contact not even Zhu Xiaofu, whom she got along with, had been added.
This wouldn’t do.
To live stably in society, one needed friends.
Being too isolated wasn’t good.
Taking the cookies out of the oven, Zheng Yao packed them while saying, “Remember to give these to Zhu Xiaofu and Zhuang Yang tonight to thank them for their help. Tell them to keep in touch, understand?”
Shen Baiyi responded reluctantly, “Oh.”
Her attitude was utterly passive.
Seeing her like this, Zheng Yao couldn’t help but pinch her cheek lightly and tug it outward. “You’re so sweet when you’re with me, so why do you clam up like a mute in front of others?”
“They’re them, and you’re you.”
Shen Baiyi said it as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Her face was practically overflowing with undisguised warmth and affection.
Zheng Yao froze slightly, her grip gradually loosening. But Shen Baiyi didn’t pull away. Instead, she held Zheng Yao’s hand, pressing her cheek into her palm and tilting her head to look at her with a pitiful expression. “I only want to play with you.”
As she spoke, she tentatively kissed the back of Zheng Yao’s hand and asked cautiously, “Do you like playing with me?”
Her action came so suddenly that Zheng Yao was stunned for a long moment before realizing Shen Baiyi had actually kissed her.
Even if it was just the back of her hand.
A strange feeling made her instinctively want to pull her hand back, but then she remembered the time she had impulsively kissed Shen Baiyi’s forehead.
Back then, she had been too overwhelmed to hold back. Perhaps that had given Shen Baiyi the signal that kissing was acceptable, leading to this moment where the other girl could so naturally press her lips to her hand.
What goes around comes around and she had been the one to start it.
Besides, Shen Baiyi was someone with a sensitive heart.
Suppressing that odd sensation, Zheng Yao nodded. “Of course, I like it.”
