My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 40
Lying listlessly on the sofa, Zheng Yao found her gaze involuntarily drawn to Shen Baiyi bustling around in the kitchen.
Honestly, there was something oddly compelling about Shen Baiyi putting on a stern little face and acting tough.
But now, Shen Baiyi actually dared to disobey her.
Narrowing her eyes, Zheng Yao sat up from the sofa. With anything, the first time led to a second, and the second time led to countless more.
So this matter had to be taken seriously. Spotting Shen Baiyi emerging from the kitchen, she beckoned her over: “Shen Baiyi, come here.”
She intended to give Shen Baiyi a proper scolding.
Shen Baiyi approached quietly, but before Zheng Yao could speak, she had already lowered her head and started apologizing: “I’m sorry, Sister. I was too harsh with you earlier. Please don’t be angry, okay?”
At this, she looked up again, her face full of grievance: “It’s all because I was so worried about you. You looked so pale, I was scared to death.”
“…”
Each word was spoken with such sincerity and earnestness.
Zheng Yao coughed dryly, already forgetting why she had called Shen Baiyi over in the first place, and muttered stiffly, “A little stomachache isn’t worth all this fuss. Instead of running around for me, you should’ve gone to bed earlier and done a few more practice tests.”
“How could studying compare to you?” Shen Baiyi frowned even deeper. “Tests can be done anytime, but letting Sister go hungry is unacceptable.”
As she spoke, she moved closer to Zheng Yao and placed a hand on her abdomen. “Does it hurt here, Sister?”
Then, tilting her head curiously, she asked, “If I massage it for you, will you feel better?”
Zheng Yao froze.
There was no denying it Shen Baiyi was like a warm, comforting embrace.
The bristling tension in Zheng Yao smoothed out under Shen Baiyi’s concern, and her voice softened. “The medicine will take care of it. There’s nothing to worry about.”
With that, she removed Shen Baiyi’s hand from her stomach. “You should go take a shower or eat something. There’s no need to hover around me.”
“Then I’ll go shower first and eat with you afterward,” Shen Baiyi nodded.
Fine.
Zheng Yao waved her off. “Go ahead.”
Shen Baiyi seemed unusually clingy toward her. At first, Zheng Yao thought it was just Shen Baiyi’s personality, but later, she noticed that Shen Baiyi acted perfectly normal around others.
Maybe she really did see Zheng Yao as an older sister.
At this thought, Zheng Yao propped her chin on her hand and sighed faintly.
Once an intimate relationship was established, it brought endless complications.
As the more level-headed one, she ought to cut it off decisively rather than let it continue.
And yet, she had done exactly that.
Though she hated to admit it…
She truly craved the care and dependence Shen Baiyi gave her.
After her father’s death, it had been a long time since anyone had loved or cared for her like this.
Shen Baiyi was the only one.
Her eyes lowered, a hint of melancholy flickering across her expression.
–
“Sister, it’s been so long since we’ve eaten together, just the two of us.”
Zheng Yao was absentmindedly sipping her porridge when she was caught off guard by this remark. She retorted, “How so? Don’t we eat together every holiday?”
“I mean just us,” Shen Baiyi said seriously. “If others are there, then it’s not just the two of us.”
“With such a big face, you still want me to spend a two-person world with you?” Zheng Yao raised an eyebrow.
A two-person world?
Shen Baiyi was momentarily stunned. She thought about the image of spending a two-person world with her sister and felt her cheeks warm slightly, but she still nodded firmly. “I just want to be with you, sister. I don’t want anyone else.”
“Xiao Bai, being this domineering isn’t good,” Zheng Yao teased, amused by her childish words. “If you’re like this with me now, how possessive will you be when you have a boyfriend later?”
At this, she laughed again. “Would you even get jealous if they just glanced at someone else?”
“I won’t have a boyfriend,” Shen Baiyi replied, somewhat displeased and a little aggrieved. “I’m serious, sister.”
“They can ask you out any of the other six days of the week. Why do they have to come and take you away from me on my day off?”
Hearing this, Zheng Yao felt the need to defend Dr. Zhuang. “I was the one who suggested it. She didn’t deliberately try to take me from you.”
Unexpectedly, Shen Baiyi looked even more aggrieved at these words, her eyes even reddening. “Sister, don’t you want to be with me?”
How did she even come to that conclusion?
Zheng Yao blinked innocently. “I’m more wronged than Dou E.”
If this had been two months ago, she could have nodded without hesitation. But now… She straightened her expression. “If I didn’t like being with you, do you think I’d let you stay with me like this?”
Yes.
Shen Baiyi answered silently in her heart.
Her sister was just the kind of person who was tough on the outside but soft inside. As long as she acted pitiful enough, wouldn’t her sister relent?
She was like this, and Yao Yao was the same.
Perhaps there would be even more people in the future who could make her sister soften.
At this thought, she subtly lowered her gaze, hiding the turbulent emotions in her eyes. She said softly, “I just like being with you, sister. Won’t you even grant me this small wish?”
“Fine, fine, I’ll grant it,” Zheng Yao sighed, unable to resist her pitiful and aggrieved expression. “This weekend, I won’t make plans with anyone else. I’ll spend the whole time with just you.”
Shen Baiyi looked up, a faint smile appearing on her face. “I knew it. Sister spoils me the most.”
Zheng Yao snorted.
She was always saying that whether she truly believed it or was just using it to remind her.
–
After that night when she almost saw Shen Baiyi being harassed by a few troublemakers, Zheng Yao made it a point to pick her up personally for a while.
She also reported the situation to the police responsible for the area.
With the recent spike in incidents, the local station took such matters seriously, and for many nights afterward, the sounds of night patrols could be heard.
Two weeks passed like this. One day, when Zheng Yao went to pick up Shen Baiyi, the school gate was inexplicably crowded with people, leaving almost no space for her car.
Fortunately, Shen Baiyi was quick, squeezing through the crowd and hopping into the car.
“Why is your school gate so crowded this late?” Zheng Yao asked curiously as she drove.
“There’s a celebrity,” Shen Baiyi replied offhandedly.
“A celebrity?” Zheng Yao perked up. “What celebrity? Do celebrities come to school too?”
“His surname is Chen,” Shen Baiyi said, then paused before adding leisurely, “He’s my deskmate.”
Zheng Yao: !!!
Sitting next to a celebrity?
She couldn’t help but glance at Shen Baiyi. “How does it feel? Is it a guy or a girl? Easy to get along with?”
“A girl,” Shen Baiyi answered reluctantly, seeing her sister’s interest. “Not familiar with her, so I don’t know if she’s easy to get along with. Average looks nowhere near as pretty as you.”
At school, apart from meals, she was completely immersed in her studies, oblivious to everything else. The only reason she knew the girl’s surname was Chen was because the girl had introduced herself when she sat down next to her.
As for whether she was easy to get along with she really had no idea.
Zheng Yao chuckled softly, not fooled by Shen Baiyi’s flattery. The girl was like her devoted fan, always seeing her through rose-tinted glasses.
When they got home, Zheng Yao checked her phone and, sure enough, saw a trending topic about a certain celebrity returning to school to prepare for the college entrance exams.
It was a female star named Chen Xingyue.
A child star who had debuted young Zheng Yao had even watched her variety shows as a kid. Back then, Chen Xingyue was only seven, appearing on a parent-child program with her father.
She had been adorable as a child and hadn’t outgrown her looks, having already played the younger versions of the female leads in several hit TV dramas.
Time flew now she was even preparing for her college entrance exams.
Catching a glimpse of the enlarged photo on her sister’s screen, Shen Baiyi pursed her lips and asked softly, “Do you like Chen Xingyue, sis?”
“Sort of?” Zheng Yao nodded. She generally liked most celebrities in the entertainment industry and rarely disliked any.
Then she looked up. “Will her sitting next to you be a problem?”
After all, she was a star. If fans swarmed to see Chen Xingyue, wouldn’t Shen Baiyi sitting right beside her be endlessly bothered?
“It’s fine.”
Shen Baiyi suppressed her displeasure as she answered.
“If it does affect you, you have to tell me or your homeroom teacher,” Zheng Yao said seriously. Noticing Shen Baiyi’s distracted expression, she couldn’t resist pinching her cheek. “Got it?”
“Got it, sis.”
Shen Baiyi sighed, then took advantage of her sister not pulling her hand away, pressing her face slightly into Zheng Yao’s palm. Her lips brushed imperceptibly against the other’s hand, and she felt instantly satisfied, her mood brightening.
Chen Xingyue’s presence didn’t really affect her much. With the college entrance exams approaching, most students were focused on studying, and Chen Xingyue herself clearly took it seriously.
Of course, there were those who didn’t care as much about the exams.
Like Lin Weiwei.
She seemed to come to school just to have fun, cycling through one girlfriend after another.
“Shen Baiyi.” Lin Weiwei spread her arms, blocking Shen Baiyi in the restroom.
Shen Baiyi narrowed her eyes, a cold glint flashing in them. “What do you want?”
“Yesterday, I saw a woman picking you up,” Lin Weiwei said, a smirk playing on her lips. “So pretty. And her chest was huge, no wonder you!”
Before she could finish, pain exploded across her face.
Lin Weiwei froze for several seconds before clutching her cheek in disbelief. “Shen Baiyi, you dare hit me?!”
The next moment, Shen Baiyi had her by the throat, slamming her against the wall.
“You dare say it, I dare hit you.” Shen Baiyi’s expression was colder than ever, her eyes dark as she watched Lin Weiwei turn red and purple from lack of air under her grip. “Keep your mouth shut and your eyes to yourself. If you so much as breathe a word about my sister again, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
With that, she released her.
Lin Weiwei slid to the floor, coughing violently, tears streaming from her eyes.
Shen Baiyi took two steps toward the door, then paused and glanced back. “Your neck will bruise. Figure out how to explain that to others that’s your problem. Of course, if you cause trouble for me, I’ll return the favor.”
With a light chuckle, she said, “Don’t you love putting on live shows in the classroom every day? I happen to have some interesting videos starring you as the leading lady. I’m sure you’d love for more people to see them?”
Lin Weiwei’s expression instantly changed. “You wouldn’t dare!”
Shen Baiyi withdrew her gaze, her face impassive. “You can test whether I dare or not.”
This time, she turned and walked back to the classroom without hesitation.
Of course, the claim about having videos was a lie.
First, she wasn’t that bored, nor did she intend to break the law just for someone like Lin Weiwei, she wouldn’t risk displeasing her sister. Second, her sister hadn’t even bought her a phone yet.
Thinking of her sister, and then recalling Lin Weiwei’s earlier disrespect toward her, Shen Baiyi’s expression darkened again.
In the bathroom, Lin Weiwei stared at the marks crisscrossing her neck in the mirror, biting her lip hard.
After fixing her appearance, she stormed back to the dorm in frustration.
The bathroom fell silent again until, moments later, a soft click echoed from the innermost stall as its door unlocked.
