My 'White Moonlight' First Love Came Back, but I Don't Love her Anymore - Chapter 8
“Yanyan, are you actually saying I’m sick?”
“Du Shangwei, what are you doing!”
Yan Jiuqing fought with all her might against the other woman’s restraint.
Du Shangwei whispered a reminder, “Qingqing, if you don’t want Zhou Wanyan to hear us from outside, you’d better lower your voice. Don’t be so agitated; I mean no harm.”
“You call this ‘no harm’?” Yan Jiuqing looked up, her gaze cold, but she did lower her voice. She was terrified of Wanyan’s hearing; if they were caught in this situation, she would never be able to explain it away.
Du Shangwei finally realized what she was doing. She released her forceful grip on Jiuqing and changed it to a gentle, light hold on her hand. “I saw you kiss her.”
A mocking smile touched Jiuqing’s lips. “Seven years without seeing each other, and those are the first words you say? Isn’t that a bit inappropriate? Besides, Zhou Wanyan is my wife. What is wrong with me kissing her? Is there a problem? Or are you saying I can’t do the very things you do?”
Du Shangwei’s smile stiffened slightly. “Qingqing, do not speak out of anger. I could not reject her; it was not that I did not want to, but that I could not. The Du Group needs her family’s help.”
Jiuqing nodded as if agreeing with her. “Then why did you come looking for me? You should be busy sucking up to your family’s lifesaver.”
Du Shangwei gazed deeply into Jiuqing’s eyes, trying to show her sincerity. “I care about you more than her.”
The tension in Jiuqing’s brow loosened, a sign that her heart had wavered. “Stop with the lies.” She pulled her hand away with all her strength. The warmth remaining on her wrist was proof of their physical contact. “Since you left without a word back then, do not come back now to disturb my happiness.”
Du Shangwei acted as if she had heard a hilarious joke. She gave a dry laugh and struck directly at Jiuqing’s deepest fear with a single sentence. “Happiness? Qingqing, stop lying to yourself. If it were not for you, Zhou Wanyan and Luo Yuening would likely have been together long ago.”
Jiuqing looked stunned. “How do you know about them?”
Du Shangwei explained with a smile, “Luo Yuening is the future successor of the Luo family, so I naturally could not investigate her. But Zhou Wanyan? She was much easier to look into. I even sent someone to the school they attended together; stories of them are still circulating there.” She paused, watching Jiuqing’s eyes darken as if covered by a storm cloud. “Do you want me to tell you how they were inseparable?”
“That is enough!” Jiuqing interrupted sharply. “You are just trying to drive a wedge between Wanyan and me. We ended things seven years ago. I do not love you anymore; I love Zhou Wanyan now.”
She did not sound like she was lying. Du Shangwei’s eyes turned colder at the thought. “How can you love her? You should love me, Qingqing.” Her sudden change to a soft, pleading attitude caught Jiuqing off guard. For a moment, she saw the Du Shangwei of the past.
“Do not call me so intimately. Do not come looking for me again.” With those words, Jiuqing pushed the door open and left, gambling that Du Shangwei would not risk following her out.
Outside, Zhou Wanyan saw her emerge and slowly stood up. “Are you not angry anymore?”
Jiuqing felt a sudden prickle of guilt; her confidence was not as strong as it had been a moment ago. “I was just jealous.”
“Jealous?”
“Mhm.”
Wanyan thought about it seriously for a moment before deciding to speak her mind. “Jiuqing, are you actually sick?”
“What?” Jiuqing asked, unable to believe her ears.
Wanyan calmly delivered the final, devastating blow. “I just feel like your emotions are very unstable.”
Jiuqing lowered her head so Wanyan could not see her expression. A faint sound of sobbing reached Wanyan’s ears, and Jiuqing’s shoulders began to tremble slightly. “Yanyan, are you actually saying I am sick?” she whispered, her voice full of grievance. “You were not like this before.”
Wanyan’s brow furrowed, and she gave a forced smile. “I was joking; do not take it to heart.”
Jiuqing stepped forward and hooked her arm through Wanyan’s. “Yanyan, let’s just go home. I am tired.”
Wanyan gave a small nod. “Alright.”
By the next day, the trending topics were entirely dominated by Yue Qi’s concert. Weibo had not been this lively in a long time. The “Yue-Yue CP” (Yue Qi and Luo Yuening) had even climbed into the top three of the CP rankings.
-
- [“Yue-Yue” is real! Let’s see who dares call it fake now. Look at the loving way Yue Qi looked at Luoluo while singing!]
-
- [Agreed! I could see the pink bubbles between them!]
-
- [Beautiful women together is just eye candy.]
-
- [Plus one! The two couples on the big screen were also very pretty.]
-
- [Latest news: The taller one in the first couple is the daughter of the Du family, and the other is the youngest daughter of Qiao Nuo, the head of the Qiao family. As for the second couple, the one with curly hair is the chairman of Huasheng, one of the big three entertainment companies. The person beside her? No record of her existence.]
-
- [Hahaha, ‘no record’? So she’s a civilian.]
-
- [So what if she’s a civilian? She looks so gentle, and her eyes are so soulful. It feels like she looks at everyone with deep affection. (Heart flutters)]
-
- [Collect your thirsty thoughts, person above.]
-
- [Setting that aside, if this lady debuted, she would be a huge hit. Just looking at that face is a pleasure. After seeing so many ugly children of capitalists lately, I need to appreciate her beauty.]
He Jia scrolled through the comments with a wide, “shipper” grin. But then she remembered something and sighed. “No matter how much we ship them, it won’t become real. Oh!”
“What are you shouting for?” Li Wen asked with a frown, her tone impatient. She had been busy beyond belief lately, trying to manage Yuening’s love life while also dealing with work. She thought that if Yuening truly ended up with Yue Qi, it wouldn’t be a bad choice.
“Sister Wen,” He Jia said worriedly, “Luo Yuening must be so heartbroken after seeing how intimate Zhou Wanyan and Yan Jiuqing were at the concert.”
“Now that you mention it…” Li Wen started.
“Who said I was heartbroken?” Luo Yuening walked in, appearing perfectly composed. Her face was radiant, with no signs of sadness. Li Wen looked at her and nodded silently; it seemed she had overthought things.
“Sister Luo, you should sleep more,” He Jia said in surprise. “You only slept for five hours.”
Luo Yuening took a sip of her freshly brewed coffee, her voice steady. “If I sleep too much, my mind starts to wander.”
“Oh,” He Jia replied. “I’ve never heard of that. My situation is the exact opposite.”
Luo Yuening lowered her head slightly, a hint of nonchalance on her face. She tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, her every movement exuding grace and elegance. “You will understand when you reach my age.”
Li Wen, busy with work, had listened to their entire conversation. She shook her head with a smile. “Can you handle recording the song tomorrow?”
“Mhm.”
“Zhou Wanyan will be there too,” Li Wen added. “I checked the schedule; we could move it back a few days if you want.”
Luo Yuening’s grip on her coffee cup tightened until her knuckles turned white. She maintained a proud, indifferent gaze, but her slightly trembling eyelashes betrayed her internal turmoil. “No need. I said I have let it go, and I meant it. Sister Wen, you do not need to worry about me.”
Li Wen gave her a thoughtful look, knowing she was only lying to herself. Luo Yuening was wonderful in every way, but she insisted on licking her wounds in private while pretending everything was fine on the surface. Perhaps it was her nature, or perhaps her pride as the sole heir of the Luo family would not allow her to be seen as vulnerable.
As soon as Yan Jiuqing arrived at the office, she ordered her staff to push the “Yue-Yue CP” trending topic even higher. Lin Na watched her boss with a confused expression. She couldn’t understand why Jiuqing was so happy about buying trending spots for a rival company’s artist.
Jiuqing sat at her desk with her back straight, her tailored suit highlighting her figure. She leaned her chin on her hand, a small smile playing on her lips. She watched as the “Yue-Yue CP” topic, which had been starting to drop, surged back to the top of the rankings because of her interference.
Feeling excellent, she even answered a call from Xia He with a gentle tone. “Did I not tell you never to call me first?”
“President Yan, I missed you.”
“Heh, missed me? You mean you missed my money.” Jiuqing leaned back, her voice cold and mocking.
“President Yan, how can you say that? You haven’t come to see me in a long time; I truly miss you.”
Xia He sat in front of her vanity mirror. Her reflection showed features that bore a slight resemblance to Zhou Wanyan. She spoke her flattering words with an expressionless face. She had seen the concert clips; the relationship between Yan Jiuqing and Zhou Wanyan had not cracked yet. If so, when would it be her turn to move up? Her contract was almost up, and Jiuqing showed no sign of wanting to renew it. She had to look out for herself. She knew how hard it was to survive in this industry without a backer and did not want to go back to that life.
Jiuqing checked her watch, not wanting to talk to Xia He any longer. This call actually reminded her that since she had decided to love Wanyan properly, she needed to get rid of Xia He. People with too many schemes were a liability.
“Our agreement is about to expire, isn’t it?”
Xia He felt a surge of hope, thinking Jiuqing was about to renew. “Yes, President Yan…”
“Then let us terminate the agreement early,” Jiuqing said calmly. “I will pay the breach of contract fees to your account within three days. From then on, we will have nothing to do with each other. Treat the past as if it never happened. And I advise you not to try anything funny. You know my methods; I can make sure you never show your face in this industry again.”
Xia He almost dropped her phone. Jiuqing’s words were final. It seemed there was no turning back, and pushing further might only make her more impatient. Just as she was about to accept, Jiuqing seemed to think of something.
A new idea sparked in the woman’s eyes. “Xia He, we will terminate the first agreement early, but I want to sign a new one with you.”
Xia He’s eyes lit up, and she agreed immediately. Then, the woman on the other end lowered her voice. Xia He listened intently, her expression becoming increasingly serious.
“President Yan, will this work?”
“Once it is done, you can name your price. But the condition is that you must completely win over Luo Yuening.”
