- My 'White Moonlight' First Love Came Back, but I Don't Love her Anymore
- Chapter 7 - One Concert, Four Broken Hearts
Outside the venue, the crowd surged like a tide. Fans held up glowing support signs, each filled with anticipation to see their shared idol. The air was thick with the chatter of people discussing which songs might be performed tonight. At the entrance, staff members checked tickets methodically, and fans moved through the security checkpoints in an orderly fashion.
Yue Qi Beautiful with a voice as sweet as honey, she had been in the industry for twelve years. Known for her powerful stage presence and her ability to weave personal experiences into her songwriting, she was deeply beloved by her fans. Her debut single had sold over 400,000 copies, earning her the title of champion of the year.
Stepping into the concert hall, the dazzling lights felt like falling stars, flashing between the stage and the audience, instantly igniting the atmosphere. As Yue Qi made her entrance, the screams within the venue reached a deafening peak.
Zhou Wanyan and Yan Jiuqing held front-row tickets. Sitting in the best possible seats, they watched and listened to a performance powered by top-tier audio equipment.
Yan Jiuqing’s long hair was pinned up loosely, and her voice sounded sweet as she spoke. “Yanyan, Yue Qi is my favorite singer of all time.”
An unnatural flicker of emotion crossed Wanyan’s eyes. “I know. You mention her to me often.”
Jiuqing smiled brightly. “I mention her because I like her so much. Yanyan, are you jealous?”
Wanyan raised an eyebrow slightly, her gentle gaze meeting Jiuqing’s. “Not at all. She is just a singer you like. Why would I be jealous of that?”
Failing to hear the answer she wanted, Jiuqing curled her lip and turned her full attention back to the stage, no longer focusing on Wanyan. Wanyan listened quietly, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. Her diamond stud earrings sparkled under the shifting concert lights. The passion of the surrounding fans felt like crashing waves, intense and full of energy.
Yue Qi’s performance was steady as ever; the continuous singing did not seem to affect her energy. After a long while, as one song ended, she announced the special guest for the night.
A sudden premonition rose in Wanyan’s heart. It was as if she had known all along who the guest would be. Yue Qi, dressed in an elaborate stage outfit and holding her custom microphone, announced the guest with a wide smile.
Luo Yuening The name echoed throughout the venue. The atmosphere reached a fever pitch as fans chanted Luo Yuening’s name in unison.
Luo Yuening appeared in a form-fitting red dress with a slight slit. With every step, her slender, pale legs were glimpsed through the fabric. Her voluminous wavy hair cascaded over her shoulders, its wine-red hue shimmering beautifully under the spotlights. Her bold, flamboyant aura was enough to make anyone’s heart skip a beat.
The moment she heard the name, the blood in Yan Jiuqing’s veins seemed to stop flowing. She quietly stole a glance at Wanyan, carefully observing her expression, not wanting to miss even the slightest change. To Jiuqing, the name Luo Yuening was like a ticking time bomb; one wrong move could shatter the happiness she had painstakingly built.
After all these years, this was their first real meeting outside of a screen. Although Wanyan’s face remained expressionless, her heart was undeniably touched. There were no romantic feelings, only a sense of nostalgia for a past friendship. Sitting in the audience and looking up at the woman radiating light on stage, Wanyan felt genuinely happy for her.
The fleeting emotion in Wanyan’s eyes was caught by the highly tense Yan Jiuqing. Jiuqing’s gaze darkened, and a surge of irritation filled her. She wanted to stand up and demand why Wanyan would not just break up with her if she still had Luo Yuening in her heart.
But she did not have the courage. That one photograph was a constant reminder that Wanyan and Luo Yuening might have already rekindled their flame. She did not want to lose Wanyan yet; after all, a suitable life partner was far harder to find than a lover.
Jiuqing looked at Wanyan’s profile and said flatly, “If I had known she was coming, I would not have come at all.” Her words were laced with a testing tone.
Wanyan looked confused. “You came to see Yue Qi. What does that have to do with Luo Yuening?”
Jiuqing turned her head away, staring coldly at the stage. “The moment I mention Luo Yuening, you defend her without a second thought.”
Wanyan furrowed her brow, feeling helpless. “Jiuqing, what does this have to do with her? Can we please not involve others in our issues?”
“Involve?” Jiuqing retorted. “Yanyan, can you honestly say your heart did not skip a beat when you saw her?”
Wanyan could not understand why Jiuqing harbored such hostility toward someone she had not seen in years. “Jiuqing,” she began.
Jiuqing raised a hand, cutting her off. “Yanyan, you do not need to say anything. I am just being too sensitive.”
With that, she refused to look at Wanyan again, staring coldly ahead. A lump formed in Wanyan’s throat. She fell silent and turned her gaze back to the front. The atmosphere between them plummeted to zero. Wanyan felt an overwhelming sense of suffocation.
A few moments later, Jiuqing observed Wanyan out of the corner of her eye. Seeing that Wanyan’s gaze was fixed on the stage, she let out a cold snort and said sarcastically, “Yanyan, do you not think Luo Yuening and Yue Qi look quite good together?”
Wanyan thought for a moment. They did look compatible. “They do. Are you satisfied now?”
Hearing Wanyan admit it, Jiuqing’s somber mood vanished instantly. Her voice became sweet again, as if the previous unpleasantness had never happened. “Of course I am satisfied, Yanyan. Let us just watch the concert and enjoy the intimate interaction between Luo Yuening and Yue Qi.” She emphasized the last two words.
Jiuqing pulled Wanyan’s arm into her embrace and leaned her head on Wanyan’s shoulder, sounding delighted. “Yanyan, you are truly…”
Before she could finish, Wanyan felt Jiuqing’s body stiffen violently. Wanyan looked down and whispered, “What is wrong, Jiuqing?”
There was no answer. Wanyan looked up and saw that the massive overhead screen was now showing the audience.
Yue Qi’s voice echoed through the hall. “Next, I will be singing my new song, Love and You, with Yuening. But before that, I want to see if my fans came to my concert as couples.”
The fans shown on the screen were ecstatic, waving frantically to get their idol’s attention. Suddenly, the camera captured two women as the center of attention. One girl had a gentle smile as she looked dotingly at the girl waving beside her. Then, under everyone’s gaze, the two shared a deep, passionate kiss.
Wanyan hissed in pain. Yan Jiuqing was pinching her arm.
Yan Jiuqing, can you still not forget her? A shadow of gloom settled over Wanyan’s heart.
She recognized the woman on the screen who had the gentle smile. When they first started dating, Jiuqing had shown her their old photos. Those photos had been torn up by Wanyan at Jiuqing’s strong insistence, and their contact information had been deleted by Wanyan’s own hand for the same reason.
Now that you see her again, your reaction is this extreme. Do you regret letting me cut all ties and destroy the memories of your past?
Yue Qi and Luo Yuening exchanged a look. Yue Qi saw the longing in her friend’s eyes and thought to herself, I need to push a bit harder to wake up your desire for love.
“It seems most of my fans came with their partners,” Yue Qi said. “Let us keep the screen rotating and see which couple appears next.”
The camera swept quickly over the smiling faces of fans and finally stopped.
越琪 (Yue Qi) saw the two people circled by the heart on the big screen. She quickly looked at her friend. Sure enough, the smile on Luo Yuening’s face froze. Her eyelashes trembled, revealing a deeply suppressed sadness she did not want anyone to see.
Seeing herself and Jiuqing on the screen, Wanyan forced a polite smile and gave a small wave.
Yan Jiuqing snapped back to reality. The image of Du Shangwei kissing someone else was stinging every nerve in her body. She reacted instinctively, pulling Wanyan closer by the neck and kissing her without hesitation.
She did not know if this kiss was meant to spite Luo Yuening or to retaliate against Du Shangwei. Yesterday that woman told her it was a family alliance with no feelings, yet today they were kissing. Truly, not a single word of truth came out of her mouth.
Wanyan felt like a heartless tool, discarded the moment she was no longer needed. The arm that had been held was now empty. On stage, even the exquisite makeup could not hide the loneliness and pain radiating from Luo Yuening.
One concert, four people completely broken, and one Yue Qi quietly falling apart in the corner.
Du Shangwei withdrew her gaze and released the hand of the person beside her, her jealousy barely contained. Everyone held their own secret thoughts, wanting to hide them from the world.
“It seems my fans are all very beautiful,” Yue Qi said, getting back on track. “Now, let us get to the main event. Here is Love and You, performed by me and Yuening.”
The lights on stage dimmed. Love and You was a melancholic song, describing the unrequited love of one person for another. The moment Yue Qi started singing, the audience was pulled into the atmosphere. Although Luo Yuening was not a professional singer, her performance was flawless. Gradually, the noise in the venue subsided as the audience listened intently.
Luo Yuening could not stop her eyes from wandering toward Wanyan, searching for her silhouette. Part of her told her to move on from the relationship that had trapped her for years, but she could not control her heart. It was as if two versions of herself were fighting; her true feelings versus her rational thoughts. Neither side could win, leaving her heart tangled in a complex web of emotion.
When the song ended, the lights came back up to the cheers of the fans. Luo Yuening stood quietly, her expression neutral. Yue Qi took her hand and moved the microphone away, whispering comfortingly, “You need to face it. You saw them just now; they are happy. Let it go.”
“Who said I cared?” Luo Yuening replied.
“Just keep being stubborn. Smile for me, and then I will believe you.”
Luo Yuening turned to Yue Qi and smiled, her face brightening like the first light of a star. “I am smiling. Are you happy now?”
Wanyan’s gaze shifted, and a sense of melancholy washed over her. Memories began to resurface.
It was a sunny afternoon years ago. “Do you really like the songs she writes that much?” “Of course! I love every single one of Sister Yue Qi’s songs. I like them very, very much.”
The CD case fell to the floor with a crack. Wanyan knelt to pick it up, but Luo Yuening was faster. Luo Yuening looked distressed, her tone unfriendly. “What are you doing? This is Sister Yue Qi’s new album that she gave to me personally. If you break it, I will be really angry with you.”
Wanyan did not respond to the anger, only asking, “Do you care about her that much? The things she gives you?”
Luo Yuening sighed in relief. Her eyes crinkled as she said dismissively, “Of course. I always treasure the things Sister Yue Qi gives me.”
Wanyan asked abruptly, “What about the things I give you? Are they more important to you than her gifts?”
Luo Yuening’s heart skipped a beat. The words she wanted to say got stuck in her throat. She looked away, pretending to be nonchalant while saying the opposite of what she felt. “Why are you even comparing yourself to Sister Yue Qi? Do not worry; you are my best friend. That will not change.”
Wanyan slowly withdrew her gaze. Perhaps she truly had harbored hazy feelings for Luo Yuening once, but those insignificant emotions had long since vanished into the river of time. Seeing her again now, Wanyan’s heart was exceptionally calm. Luo Yuening had ultimately become a mere passerby in her life.
Her gaze returned to Yan Jiuqing. Jiuqing was already looking at her, as if she had been waiting for Wanyan to turn back. As they locked eyes, there were no physical obstacles between them, yet their hearts, which should have been close, remained distant.
They say a single look can last a thousand years, but this look between them seemed to reveal the end of their story. They just had not realized it yet.
“Like what you see? Why do you not go up on stage then?” Jiuqing said. “After all, you two were already ambiguous six years ago. It would be nice to rekindle the flame after all this time, though the six years you lost in between are a bit of a shame.”
“Jiuqing, you are going too far.”
“I am going too far? Your heart is not even with me anymore, and you say I am going too far?” Jiuqing accused. An inexplicable sense of grievance made her look for an outlet to vent.
“Jiuqing, I do not want to fight with you anymore. It really hurts our relationship.”
“Do you think I want to fight with you?”
With that, Jiuqing rose and left her seat in a huff. Wanyan remained silent, wondering if her partner was losing her mind. After a while, unable to stop worrying, Wanyan sent a message asking where she was.
Jiuqing must have been waiting for the text, because she replied almost instantly.
Zhou Wanyan stood quietly, waiting. Little did she know that inside one of the stalls, there were two people.
