My Weekend Lover Turned Out To Be My Boss - Chapter 96
Chapter 96: Villain J · “Do You Know”
Exhausted and ignoring the filth, we lay on the cement floor covered in dust, heads close together, whispering in each other’s ears. It was a strange sensation—a peacefulness we didn’t want anyone to break. Having survived a calamity, we teased each other, then suddenly fell silent, eyes wide as we stared intently at one another.
Guan Shuyun tried to reach out to stroke my cheek. She made several painful attempts, but she was too injured to move freely. Instead, she pressed her head against my cheek and nuzzled me. “Let’s date.”
I shook my head in silence. I, too, had committed what she called the “ultimate taboo”—I had accidentally deceived her heart. I wasn’t so wicked as to be without principles, so I maintained my stance and rejected her firmly: “I’m sorry, I can’t accept you.”
Likely having never faced rejection before, Guan Shuyun looked up and glared at me. “You! You are the first person who has ever dared to reject me!”
“I can’t go against my conscience and lie to you. Love is a matter between two people. Guan Shuyun, don’t waste your time on me. I gave ten years of my life and soul to Lan Feiyi; it wasn’t until we parted ways that I realized I’ve lost the ability to love. I’m sorry.”
“What kind of monster are you? Why did I fall for a freak like you? Fine. Me liking you is my business; you rejecting me is yours. Let’s just stay out of each other’s way.”
Perhaps when facing unusual emotions, Guan Shuyun possessed an inexplicable stubbornness. She met my rejection with persistence, then suddenly shuddered, sat up, and reminded me: “Hey! You’re bleeding so much from that wound, why are you still lying there? Move! We’re going to the hospital.”
Just then, the rapid clicking of high heels reached our ears. We both looked toward the source. Phoebe was searching for us, panic-stricken. The moment our eyes met, she rushed over. “Feifan!”
I saw a rare terror on her face; she must have been scared to death. “Phoebe?” I muttered.
Following right behind Phoebe was Yu Xiao. I thought she had left. From a distance, Yu Xiao explained: “Lin Chen notified us. President Lan was worried about your safety, so she rushed over.”
Phoebe knelt down, her brow furrowed. Her fingers gingerly brushed the wound on my shoulder. It clearly pained her to see it; even her voice choked up as she asked with deep concern, “Does it hurt?”
I smiled at her and shook my head slightly. Instantly, the gentle worry on Phoebe’s face vanished. She turned to stare at Guan Shuyun and demanded sharply, “Why the hell did your mess have to involve You Feifan?”
Guan Shuyun knew she was in the wrong, but she argued back righteously: “No one expected He Mu and Qiu Qi would dare move against me. Feifan was worried about my safety and saved my life today. I naturally owe her a massive debt of gratitude—but what does any of this have to do with you, President Lan?”
I just wanted some peace and quiet; I didn’t want to watch them tear into each other. I sighed and interrupted: “Enough! Stop fighting! Yu Xiao, take me and Guan Shuyun to the hospital.”
Seeing me try to stand, Phoebe quickly supported my arm. “Careful. Let me help you down.”
Yu Xiao was a perfect, clever soul. To give Phoebe and me some time alone, she stepped toward Guan Shuyun and clumsily tried to lift her. “President Guan, let me help you. This… your hand must hurt? It might be dislocated. Slow, slow!”
As Phoebe and I headed downstairs, I could faintly hear Guan Shuyun’s cries of pain from above. Phoebe looked back up for a moment, then suddenly turned toward me. I was confused about what she intended, but in the next heartbeat, she slammed me against the wall, one hand bracing against the bricks and the other gripping my hem.
I held my breath, not daring to make a sound. We had loved each other for so many years, yet our moments of intimacy had dwindled over time; since the breakup, even touching hands was rare. This sudden kabedon sent goosebumps across my skin, leaving me dazed. I leaned against the wall, speechless, simply admiring Phoebe’s thin face.
Then, she leaned her head against my neck and shoulder. Warm, wet tears fell on me, accompanied by her slight trembling. I knew that she—who was usually so composed—was crying. This suppressed weeping made my heart ache. I could only reach out and stroke her long hair. “The world outside is colorful and bright, but it still can’t compare to your smile. But you aren’t a streetlamp, and I don’t need one.”
She lowered her sobbing voice and shook her head frantically. “Don’t scare me. I don’t want to see you bloodied and battered ever again. Even if you don’t want me, even if you don’t love me… just don’t scare me. I can’t take it…”
Enduring the pain in my shoulder, I cupped her head. My eyes reddened as I closed them tightly, letting stray tears slide down. I sniffled and opened my eyes to look at her firmly.
Once again, I pushed her away. “I will be fine. President Lan need not worry. Let’s go; my wound is still bleeding.”
I moved to continue downstairs, but Phoebe kept her head down and held onto my clothes. I stopped and looked at her in silence. She leaned in to hug me. “Why can I see Guan Shuyun’s reflection in your eyes… where did I go?”
I took a deep breath and cruelly broke free of her embrace. “Didn’t you say it yourself? Your You Feifan is already dead. Whose reflection is in my eyes is naturally none of President Lan’s business. Please take care of yourself and do not disturb my life. Shuyun and I were both injured today; I really don’t have the strength to bicker with you…”
With that, I walked downstairs resolutely, not waiting for her. With my back to her, I reached out to cover my chest. Hasn’t my heart already died? The repeated scars have turned into callouses—so why, in this moment, does it still hurt? A dead heart has no right to flutter.
Behind me, I heard Phoebe’s voice, thick with a nasal tone from crying: “When everything returns to peace, the streetlamp we obsess over will still be in its original place, waiting for each other to come home. Even if we make mistakes a thousand or ten thousand times, whether we love or not, we are immovable. In the future, if you are covered in scars, no matter where you are, I will rush to take you away from this world of conflict.”
I squeezed my eyes shut and grit my teeth. The feeling of tears welling up without being able to cry out loud was stifling. But Phoebe… if the fate is gone, we must not force it. What is forced is always bitter.
People always ask if I still love Lan Feiyi. She is the eyes that well up with tears; she is the heart that has grown calloused; she is my warm palms. Tell me—can she be cut away? If she were, what kind of mangled wreck would I become? I just don’t say it. I can’t say it. I am trudging through this path of suffering, finding my lost soul piece by piece, and so I can only cast her away piece by piece.
God is cruel; He cannot bear to see me happy or my life stable. My struggle against anyone is just fate—but in the end, the person I am fighting is myself.
…
“Who do that He Mu and Qiu Qi think they are, daring to touch you like that! No, I can’t swallow this!”
Guan Shuyun and I had been staying home for a few days to recover. We sat side-by-side on the sofa, watching Qiao Xin rant and rave. Finally, she looked at us resentfully: “What, are you both just going to take this lying down?”
Guan Shuyun and I just exchanged a knowing smile. Guan Shuyun looked back at Qiao Xin. “My grudge with them is settled. I’m warning you: do not go looking for trouble with them. Otherwise, when will this cycle of vengeance ever end?”
“They almost killed you! And here you are speaking up for them. Have you suddenly turned into a saint?”
Qiao Xin was relentless, so Guan Shuyun’s face darkened. “I’m thinking of my own safety. If you dare cause trouble, I won’t hesitate to turn against you.”
Qiao Xin downed a glass of red wine and let out a breath of surrender. “Fine, fine. Since you’re sticking up for outsiders, do I even dare meddle? By the way, at the end of this month, Auntie Li and I are hosting a gala for the new company. You and You Feifan have to attend. The new company needs more networking, and I need you to help lead the way.”
“Small matter. We’ll be there.”
“Alright. Feichun and I have things to discuss. Recover well, I’ll visit you again when I have time.”
“Go on then.”
Watching Qiao Xin leave, I picked up a piece of apple and held it to Guan Shuyun’s lips. “Open up.”
“Ah~” She bit the apple with a smile. “Sweet.”
I checked the time and felt a bit drowsy. “I’m going upstairs for a nap. I’ll keep you company later.”
“Go rest. How is the wound?”
“It’s starting to scab. I’m actually fine. I can go back to the office tomorrow.”
“No. Until the wound is completely healed, you aren’t allowed to step foot outside the Guan estate.”
I reached out and flicked her nose, laughing. “Do you still think I’m a child?”
“I don’t care! I want you to step out in perfect condition so people don’t gossip about the Guan family treating people poorly.”
“Just keep making things up! You’re just bored being home alone and want a playmate. Don’t think I don’t know your little schemes.”
She made a face at me. “Hmph! Can’t you just keep the truth buried in your gut? Get lost and go to sleep!”
