Chapter 95: Villain I · “After Leaving Your City”
He Mu’s eyes were bloodshot. I could only imagine how pathetic and wretched he must have looked, kneeling before Guan Shuyun and kowtowing on behalf of Qinyun. I saw a manic, crystalline tear fall from the corner of his eye. As he spoke, he began to weep; the habitual arrogance on Guan Shuyun’s face faded, perhaps because He Mu’s words unearthed the sorrow she had long buried in the depths of her heart.
He Mu held Guan Shuyun in a grip of iron. The two of them stood on the edge of a floor without railings. The sight of them swaying there was terrifying. Guan Shuyun, pushed to the breaking point, spoke with a heart-wrenching desperation: “Shut up! Don’t mention Guan Qinyun to me! You bastard! Don’t you want me dead? Then push me off and be done with it! Let all the grievances end here!”
He Mu was ruthless enough; he shoved Guan Shuyun forward a bit, then tightly grabbed her back collar, leaving her dangling over the empty expanse of the high drop. If he used just a bit more force, she would fall. He Mu roared threateningly, “Do you think I don’t dare?”
My heart was in my throat. I took a few steps forward to draw He Mu’s attention. “I have a good suggestion—listen to me! Don’t you need money? We can sit down and talk it over slowly. I’ll convince Guan Shuyun to invest and fill that financial hole for you. What do you think? That company was saved by Qinyun’s life; it shouldn’t just vanish. Besides, Qinyun was her sister—there has to be some sentiment left.”
As I spoke, I turned to Qiu Qi and gave her a meaningful look. “Qiu Qi, am I right? We all need to calm down. Revenge is empty; solving the company’s economic problems is what actually matters.”
Qiu Qi nodded blankly, echoing me: “Yes, Feifan is right. Lan Feiyi refused to help us, but now we have Guan Shuyun who can step in. Don’t be impulsive, or everything will be lost!”
He Mu waved his small knife, cursing at Qiu Qi: “Coward! You’re scared too? Or do you still have feelings for You Feifan and can’t bear to lose her? You believe her lies just because she says a few words? Guan Shuyun help us? Bah! If she really had such a good heart, would Qinyun be dead? I won’t believe it!”
Guan Shuyun proved to be my “pig teammate.” Just as I had teamed up with Qiu Qi to pacify He Mu, she insisted on provoking him: “A hundred million is pocket change to me. But He Mu, Qiu Qi—considering you dared to treat me like this, give up. I will never help you!”
“Guan Shuyun! What kind of madness is this at a time like this!”
I barked at her. Qiu Qi began to slowly edge toward He Mu. He Mu still held a sliver of trust for her, so he didn’t threaten her to stay back. Qiu Qi looked at He Mu and said in a trembling voice: “Brother He Mu, thank you for protecting her legacy all these years. My stopping you from doing something stupid doesn’t mean I don’t hate this woman who caused Qinyun’s death.
Do you know why I traveled so much? Because back when you returned with that huge backpack, covered in dust, I told Qinyun that you looked so cool. You loved freedom so much, yet you were trapped in the past. We cannot be tied to the same spot forever just because we lost someone.
Hatred has made you a stranger—nothing like the man Qinyun loved. Qinyun should be our love, not our nightmare. Please, wake up. Don’t let yourself lose your freedom.”
He Mu looked at Qiu Qi with a mix of grief and despair. He sniffled and spoke through a choked sob: “You’re so foolish. You never saw Qinyun holding the report for the bone marrow match. She was like a happy child, jumping up and down in front of me. She said if the surgery was a success, she’d take you far away to enjoy the beauty of life.
You don’t know… you don’t know the arrogant look on this woman’s face when she refused Qinyun… Qiu Qi, I’m sorry. I tried my best. I kowtowed until my head bled, I begged, I trampled a man’s dignity into the dirt just to save Qinyun’s life. In the end, I only saw Qinyun leave stubbornly, and all hope turned to ash.”
As He Mu recounted his despair, his grip slowly loosened, and he instinctively pushed Guan Shuyun outward. Qiu Qi threw herself forward without a second thought. Accompanied by Guan Shuyun’s scream, she grabbed Guan Shuyun’s hand. I cried out in horror: “NO!!!”
He Mu was also shocked by his own action. Furious, I snatched up a glass bottle from the floor and ran at him. I smashed the bottle over his head. Instantly, several streams of blood flowed down, painting his face in a gruesome, demonic mask. He Mu staggered and began to wrestle with me. It was like two mad dogs biting each other. He tried to kick me away, but since I couldn’t match his strength, I simply used my weight to pin him down. “Bastard! You bastard!”
“You Feifan! You’re always ruining my plans! I’ll kill you!”
He Mu fumbled around and found a shard of glass on the ground. He drove it hard into my shoulder. I let out a muffled groan of pain. On the other side, Qiu Qi was still holding onto Guan Shuyun, whose entire body was now dangling in mid-air. She couldn’t hold on much longer. The roar from her throat was the result of a struggle deep in her soul—she could have let go and sent this hated woman to hell, yet she screamed with all her might: “Don’t… don’t let go! Hold on tight! Do not let go!”
In a moment of desperation, I remembered the knife Yu Xiao had given me. Still pinning He Mu down, I pulled the knife from my waistband and, with a shout, drove the sharp blade into He Mu’s arm. We both felt the agony of flesh and soul; we let out cries of pain. As He Mu instinctively moved to protect his injured arm, I grabbed his head with both hands and slammed it into the ground with everything I had.
He Mu’s eyes closed as he lost consciousness and the will to struggle. I crawled over to Qiu Qi’s side. She was gripping Guan Shuyun’s wrists, her face flushed red. I saw tears falling from her face, drop by drop, onto Guan Shuyun. I reached out hurriedly: “Give me your hand! Guan Shuyun, give me your hand!”
Guan Shuyun’s other hand left long nail scratches on the grey concrete wall. She struggled to reach for my arm, but Qiu Qi was running out of strength and was being pulled forward by Guan Shuyun’s weight. Guan Shuyun missed my hand but grabbed Qiu Qi’s wrist with both hands. I immediately changed my grip, wrapping my arms tightly around Qiu Qi’s waist to pull her back, yelling: “Don’t let go! Even if your arm dislocates, don’t let go! No one dies today! No one dies!”
A voice reached my ears—a voice full of tragic lament: “I loved Qinyun! I really loved her, but she didn’t want me anymore. And I did the stupidest thing of my life. I really regret it. I shouldn’t have threatened her… even if you can’t punish me, I’ve been trapped in her nightmare forever. Qiu Qi… I’m sorry… I’m sorry… I’m sorry…”
Guan Shuyun’s heartfelt confession was something Guan Qinyun could no longer hear; it could only be deeply remembered by those left behind in pain. Her pride finally bowed in this moment. She kept saying “I’m sorry” until her voice broke into sobs. I held Qiu Qi’s waist tightly, but I still couldn’t pull Guan Shuyun up.
I glanced sideways at He Mu. He was swaying as he stood back up. He stared at me and Qiu Qi and let out a final, deranged roar: “Since you want to save her so badly, all three of you can die together! You meddling fools!”
He Mu walked toward me step by step. I didn’t dare let go; if I did, Qiu Qi would likely be pulled over the edge by Guan Shuyun. But if I didn’t, He Mu would push me off. Just as I held my breath, afraid to think of the outcome, a figure rushed toward He Mu like the wind. With a single punch, He Mu fell to the ground once more, unconscious.
Lin Chen always gave me the greatest surprises. I shouted: “Lin Chen! Help me!”
With his usual cold expression, he walked to Qiu Qi’s side and grabbed Guan Shuyun’s arm. He grit his teeth, grunting as he stepped back, and finally hauled Guan Shuyun back to safety. Ignoring the dust, I lay flat on the ground. The pain in my shoulder registered belatedly. I panted, “Sss! It hurts!”
Guan Shuyun lay prone on the ground. She was truly terrified; her legs were too weak to stand, and her arms were partially dislocated from being held so long. Her face was pressed against the floor, covered in dust, looking utterly wretched. She asked, “Why did you choose to save me?”
At that question, Qiu Qi started crying again. I knew her refusal to let go earlier was an agonizing internal battle, a release of years of accumulated pain that finally turned to nothing. She looked toward He Mu, who lay motionless on the ground, and spoke softly:
“Because I am not like you. My heart is not cruel or evil. I know that no matter how much I hate you, I won’t do something that violates heaven and reason. From beginning to end, I felt pity for your sister, and I am making up for the mistakes He Mu made. Even if I saved you, it doesn’t mean I forgive you.”
With that, Qiu Qi stood up and dragged her exhausted arms toward He Mu. I breathed a sigh of relief; this farce was finally over. Yu Xiao hadn’t shown her face, but the backup she sent saved the day. I commanded him: “Lin Chen, take them both and leave. Right now!”
Lin Chen remained a man of few words, answering briefly: “Okay… don’t forget my knife.”
Still thinking about that ‘Spring Embroidery’ knife at a time like this! After watching Lin Chen carry He Mu and lead Qiu Qi out of the building, I clutched my shoulder and looked at Guan Shuyun with effort. “You’ve just returned from a trip to the gates of hell. Any thoughts?”
Guan Shuyun pouted. She had been badly shaken; her face was deathly pale, and her voice was weak as she responded, “My thought is… that place really isn’t fun at all.”
I looked at Guan Shuyun seriously. “I hope you won’t cause them any more trouble because of what happened today. Don’t create any more complications.”
Guan Shuyun looked at me desolately, sniffled, and replied with a sob, “I won’t move against them again—provided they don’t come looking for trouble with me. As for that hundred million… I’ll consider it.”
I was a bit surprised. Someone like Guan Shuyun usually held a grudge over the smallest things. This time, she was being sensible. I teased, “Is this a sudden realization? Are you going to be a good person now?”
She changed her position to lie on the ground with me and whispered in my ear: “After all, that is the property Qinyun refused to trade even for her life. I have to protect it for her. Today… thank you.”
