Chapter 105: Villain S · “Song of the Yue Boatman”
Guan Shuyun didn’t quite understand my words; she found them somewhat laughable. “What do you mean? I don’t follow…”
Duoran cut in to explain for me: “You should thank Feifan. If it weren’t for her request, today’s liquidation would have cost the Guan Corporation half its life.”
Phoebe spread out the documents, her expression unchanging as she added, “I promised Feifan that I would only liquidate half of Doris Venture Capital’s investment in the Guan Corporation. The remaining half, I won’t touch for now.”
Hearing Phoebe’s words, Guan Shuyun let out a scoff. “You Feifan, are you pitying me?”
I shrugged, maintaining my smile. “What’s there to pity? You eat well, sleep well—you live like a goddess in the clouds. You were unjust to me, but I won’t be unfaithful to you. We’ve known each other a while; this is the most I can do for you. Please don’t reject my kindness.”
Guan Shuyun’s heart must have been aching. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have suddenly turned away to lean against the floor-to-ceiling window in silence, followed by a chilling, tragic laugh. “Ha… how boring to only do investment liquidation today. We could talk about something much more interesting! For example…”
She turned around, leaning against the glass, her eyes scanning the three of us as she continued to taunt, “For example, just what kind of magic does You Feifan possess to make an ex and a current lover become such trusted partners? No matter how I look at it, CEO Lan and Miss Doris are two incompatible types of people. The relationship between the three of you is utterly absurd…”
Hearing Guan Shuyun’s words, I leaned forward and looked back and forth between Phoebe and Duoran. Their expressions didn’t change much, but they both simultaneously fixed their gaze on me, as if I were the sole culprit. I thought to myself: If I had been born in ancient times as a wealthy young master and married these three, they’d be acting out “The Temptation of Wife” every single day. It would be spectacular!
I held my teacup and blew away the steam. After taking a small sip, I responded unhurriedly, “If you want to curse me, just do it openly. Beating around the bush isn’t your style. However, I do have a question I’d like to clear up: how did you find out Duoran’s real identity?”
Guan Shuyun dragged a chair over to sit beside me. The two of us looked like a pair of schemers, excited by the thrill of curiosity. Phoebe cleared her throat a few times, interrupting our interaction. “Business first. We can find a nice restaurant later to eat and talk.”
Guan Shuyun leaned back against the conference table, tilting her head back to look past me and Duoran toward Phoebe. A cunning smile played on her lips. “As you wish.”
I knew Guan Shuyun was forcing herself to stay composed. To save her from further embarrassment, I decided it was best to leave the room. I patted her shoulder. “Since it’s a negotiation between two companies, it’s not appropriate for an outsider like me to stay. I only came today to ensure Doris gave up half the liquidation. Take your time; I’ll wait outside.”
Leaving the conference room and gently closing the door, I found the secretary waiting outside, looking at me with hesitation. I smiled at her and asked in a low voice, “How has CEO Guan’s mood been these past few days?”
The secretary shook her head. “I shouldn’t talk too much, but I have to say a few words. Miss You, during the time you were by CEO Guan’s side, she had no heart for work; she only wanted to follow you around. Her mood was better than ever. In the end, you set her up so badly—naturally, she was furious. The reason she can face this liquidation so calmly today is that long before you arrived, the company set up a special task force specifically to prepare for this. The liquidation amount is massive. Sigh…”
I knew my influence on Guan Shuyun was significant. After thanking the secretary, I pressed my ear to the door to eavesdrop. With a creak, the door opened, and I nearly fell in. Phoebe was holding her phone, likely coming out to take an important call. I tumbled into her arms, and she laughed as she steadied me.
I closed the door again and followed her toward the window at the end of the hallway. I followed her step for step. She was speaking rapidly in English; I couldn’t really understand, so I playfully made faces at her. She smiled and reached out to pinch my nose. After hanging up, Phoebe raised an eyebrow. “I see you’re bored out here by yourself. Why don’t you go back in and play on your phone?”
“Aren’t you afraid Guan Shuyun will get ‘handsy’ with me? Just now she was leaning so close—you looked calm on the outside, but what were you thinking in your heart?”
Phoebe covered her mouth, laughing heartily. “Are you trying to provoke me?”
“I bet the vinegar jar in your heart has tipped over a hundred times already, hasn’t it?”
“You dare say it out loud! I know you only left the room because you didn’t want Guan Shuyun to feel awkward, right?”
It was a question I couldn’t argue with. I nodded with a smile. “Alright, alright. Let’s go back in. How is the talk going?”
“We came prepared, and she’s countering as best she can. It’s going reasonably well.”
Back in the conference room, Guan Shuyun and Duoran were discussing business. To avoid disturbing them, I sat at the far end playing on my phone. In the blink of an eye, my battery was almost dead. They were finally wrapping things up. I checked the time and slapped the table with a thwack, startling all three into silence.
Seeing I didn’t say anything else, Phoebe put down her documents. “What is it?”
“Break time. Food.”
Duoran was the first to catch my drift. She laughed and started packing her files. Guan Shuyun also checked the time. “Fine, let’s eat. There are a few good restaurants near the office; I’ll take you to try them.”
The four of us walked to the parking garage. I jiggled my car keys. “I’ll reluctantly serve as ‘chauffeur’ for you three ladies. Take my car. Yours are too high-profile—driving around in them is like shouting to the world, ‘I’m rich, come rob me.’ Three of you together is just asking for a thief.”
Duoran let Phoebe and Guan Shuyun sit in the back so they could continue their discussion. I sat in the driver’s seat and buckled my belt. I glanced at Duoran; since she’d come back, we hadn’t had a single proper conversation. Seeing me staring, she waved a hand in front of my face. “What are you thinking about?”
I grinned at her and said meaningfully, “This time, I’m the one driving. It will be very safe.”
She understood my reference to our past “accident.” She turned away to look out the window as she buckled up. “Crow’s mouth—can’t you say something nice for once?”
……
At the restaurant, Guan Shuyun led us into a private room. After ordering, I poured the tea and changed the subject: “I’ve been bored for half the day. I’m seeking an answer from CEO Guan, and none of you are allowed to interrupt!”
Phoebe nodded readily. “Fine, we won’t speak.”
I gestured to Guan Shuyun. “CEO Guan, start your performance.”
She held her teacup, looking at Mu Duoran, but directed her answer to me. “Whether it’s someone as ‘stupid’ as You Feifan or as smart as CEO Lan, the reason you all tripped up with me is actually very simple. Before I approached you, I went to see a certain person. That person’s understanding of you all was too comprehensive.”
Mu Duoran’s expression darkened. She finished her tea and lowered her head. “If I’m not mistaken, the person you went to see was Zhao Taian.”
“Miss Doris is indeed clever.”
“I blame myself,” Duoran said. “If I had gone to visit him in prison sooner after I returned, perhaps none of this mess would have happened.”
I didn’t understand. “You went to see Zhao Taian? He’s a convict—how would he know anything about what’s happening out here?”
“He naturally didn’t know how much the world had changed,” Guan Shuyun explained, “but his understanding of you was profound. Especially you, You Feifan. He was the only one who could teach me how to find your weakness, how to provoke you, and how to make your counterattacks fruitless. Even for CEO Lan—Zhao Taian had mapped out almost every way she handles threats. That is why, while your knowledge of me was only skin-deep, I already knew you inside and out.”
Everything became clear. Phoebe and I looked at each other. I muttered to myself, “No wonder when I went to visit him, Zhao Taian was so certain that I had ‘suffering’ ahead of me.”
“That’s why,” Guan Shuyun continued, “when you were being tortured by Qiao Xin, I realized I had truly been tricked by you. Otherwise, no matter how impulsive Qiao Xin is, she wouldn’t have defied my orders to move against you again. So, I grew suspicious and visited the prison once more. When I accidentally showed Zhao Taian the photo of Miss Doris on my phone, he nearly went insane, pounding on the glass. He looked like a rabid dog, screaming in agony.
“He said he had lost to You Feifan again. The ultimate humiliation for him was that he had spent his days in guilt and prayer, trying to atone for the sin of ‘killing’ Mu Duoran, only for it to be a massive lie. Mu Duoran wasn’t dead. I followed that lead to the end, and the relationship between Doris Venture Capital and Lan Feiyi surfaced. It was a masterful game you played. One faked wealth, the other faked love—you won beautifully. I have nothing left to say.”
Phoebe refilled Guan Shuyun’s tea and spoke naturally about Doris Venture Capital: “If you hadn’t conspired with Qiao Xin and Li Shuhua to set me up, I wouldn’t have risked so much money to play this game with you. I founded Doris for no other reason than as a retirement fund for Feifan. The Lan family business is naturally for Qingfan to manage. I thought that in our later years, if I were to pass away first, Feifan should have material security. Fortunately, Duoran’s ability hasn’t disappointed me; she’s made me a lot of money, which is why it came in handy now.”
Guan Shuyun looked at Phoebe in silence. Phoebe sipped her tea calmly and continued, “Feifan always says you can never finish earning all the money in the world, and she fears working so hard only to have no life left to spend it. After everything that’s happened, I’ve come to see things her way. CEO Guan, you’ve opposed me at every turn. Given my old temper, this wouldn’t have ended so simply. But I’m getting older; I like to consider the future.”
With that, Phoebe stood up with her teacup, facing Guan Shuyun with great poise. “I’ve poured the tea for you. You must promise me to cut ties with Qiao Xin and Li Shuhua. After decades in the business world, meeting an opponent of equal strength is a rare fate; we should cherish it. Besides, our cooperation will only grow. Drink this tea, and our grievances are a closed chapter.”
