My Upperclassman Wants me to confess my feelings - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Confession
Walking back to the dormitory, Bei Wenxin kept thanking Cheng Wu.
Cheng Wu smiled. “It’s nothing; you’re Xiaohan’s friend.” Thinking of Bei Wenxin’s desire to join a student union, Cheng Wu suggested, “Actually, the Department Student Union is also quite good.”
Bei Wenxin nodded, but she wasn’t certain in her heart. She planned to transfer departments in her sophomore year.
At the end of September, as military training concluded, every department was preparing for the Freshman Orientation Gala. At this time, the student unions were incredibly busy. For the Mathematics Department’s gala, all three of their only female students had to perform. Even so, there weren’t enough acts. Out of options, Bei Wenxin stepped forward and proactively added three segments herself.
On the day of the freshman gala, there were eight acts in total. The first was a trio song by the three girls; with the “Pro” Bei Wenxin carrying the “Bronze” amateurs, they opened the show successfully. By the third act—a duo dance by Xia Xiaohan and Bei Wenxin—the freshmen were practically howling with excitement.
During the next two acts prepared by the boys, everyone bowed their heads to play on their phones. It wasn’t until the final three acts that people put their phones away.
“Next, please welcome Student Bei Wenxin for a piano solo, Symphony of Fate. Welcome!” When the piece ended, the applause was thunderous.
“Next, please welcome Student Bei Wenxin for a solo recitation, Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again. Welcome!” When the recitation ended, the crowd cheered.
“Next, please welcome Student Bei Wenxin for a solo dance, The Red-Crowned Crane. Welcome!” Appearing in a red-and-white classical dance costume, Bei Wenxin looked like a dream under the lights, instantly setting the whole venue on fire.
Simultaneously, photos and videos of Bei Wenxin’s performances were constantly being posted to the forum. The usually quiet Math Department section suddenly exploded in popularity, flooded with endless praise. At this time, other departments’ galas had only just begun, while the Math Department’s had already finished.
On stage, Bei Wenxin was surrounded by layers of people; Xia Xiaohan couldn’t squeeze in, so she gave up. She decided to go back to the dorm to read and sent a message to Bei Wenxin before leaving.
Not long after walking out of the auditorium, Xia Xiaohan received a message from Cheng Wu: Xiaohan, I forgot the key to the auditorium drawer in the dorm. Can you help me go back and get it? Xia Xiaohan quickly replied “Okay” and raced back to the dorm.
After grabbing the key and arriving at the entrance of the Management Department building, Xia Xiaohan ran into Sun Wenze and a clean-looking boy. They seemed to be discussing something, mentioning words like “roses” and “dry ice.”
“Senior Sun,” Xia Xiaohan stepped aside and greeted them.
Sun Wenze was startled. “Why are you here?”
Xia Xiaohan held up the key. “The senior forgot her key; I’m delivering it to her.”
“Then go in quickly,” Sun Wenze waved with a smile.
Unexpectedly, the boy beside him smiled and stopped her. “You must be Xiaohan, right?”
Xia Xiaohan nodded blankly, looking at Sun Wenze in confusion, only to see that he was also surprised.
The boy looked at the key in her hand and said, “Xiaohan, I’m A-Wu’s good friend, Fan Jia. Wenze just said he was looking for you, and you happened to arrive. How about this? I’ll help you deliver A-Wu’s key.”
“Huh?” Xia Xiaohan felt something was wrong and looked at Sun Wenze.
Suddenly pushed into the spotlight, Sun Wenze hesitated. After receiving a pointed look from Fan Jia, he had to bite the bullet and admit, “I… I indeed have something to talk to you about.”
As soon as this lie left his mouth, Sun Wenze felt his eyelid twitch. If Cheng Wu found out about this, it would be very bad.
Fan Jia turned back and asked with a smile, “Wenze, why aren’t you coming over? Are you shy?”
Sun Wenze practically shuffled his feet over. Suddenly, he thought of the hotly discussed Bei Wenxin on the forum, and his eyes lit up. “Xiaohan, I wanted to ask about Student Bei Wenxin.” Sun Wenze suddenly became enthusiastic, pointing to a streetlamp in front of the building. “Come, come, come, tell me all about her.”
Xia Xiaohan was pushed away by Sun Wenze. Fan Jia followed them and reminded her, “Xiaohan, give me the key. It wouldn’t be good to be late.”
“Oh, okay.” Although Xia Xiaohan felt it was strange, she handed over the key. Watching Fan Jia turn and enter the building, she comforted herself: He knows Senior, so he should deliver the key.
Under the streetlamp, Xia Xiaohan helplessly endured a barrage of questions from Sun Wenze. After she said a few things, Sun Wenze squinted at her. “Student Xiaohan, why do I feel like you’re guarding against me? Did Sister Cheng say something to you?”
“No,” Xia Xiaohan shook her head. Senior only said to stay away from him; that shouldn’t count, right?
At the backstage entrance of the Management auditorium, Fan Jia made a decision. No matter what, he had to seize this opportunity today. Holding the key, he smiled and pushed the door open.
Under the streetlamp, Xia Xiaohan looked at Sun Wenze with total helplessness. “Senior, I’ve said everything I can. Really! I also just found out Wenxin is so good at singing, playing, and dancing!”
Sun Wenze didn’t believe her, his face full of suspicion. “There are so few girls in your Math Department, and you’re so close to Little Bei. How could you not know anything? Are you intentionally not telling me?”
Aside from hiding that one sentence from her Senior, Xia Xiaohan really hadn’t hidden anything. She was almost ready to cry. “I didn’t!”
Just then, a roar from Ningning came from behind Sun Wenze: “Sun Wenze! What are you doing! How dare you bully our Xiaohan!” She rushed over, holding a bag of potato chips in front of her like a shield, protecting Xia Xiaohan.
Seeing Ningning, Sun Wenze took several steps back. “Student Ningning, you’ve misunderstood!”
But Ningning ignored him and asked Xiaohan, “Didn’t Sister Wu ask you to deliver the key to the auditorium? Why are you still here?”
“When I got to the door, I ran into Senior Sun who had something to ask me. Senior Fan Jia, who was with him, helped me deliver it!” As soon as Xia Xiaohan finished, she saw Ningning freeze.
Xia Xiaohan became panicked and hurriedly asked Sun Wenze, “Wasn’t Senior Fan Jia going to deliver the key?”
Ningning’s expression changed drastically. The Finance Department was very busy right now; what was Fan Jia doing at the Management Department? She glared fiercely at Sun Wenze. “Fine! You helped Fan Jia trick Xiaohan out of the key, didn’t you!”
Hearing this, Xia Xiaohan panicked. “The key was stolen!”
“It’s okay, it’s okay! The key will definitely be delivered! The problem is Fan Jia!” Seeing Xia Xiaohan’s anxiety, Ningning hurried to comfort her. After leaving a few threatening words for Sun Wenze, Ningning pulled Xia Xiaohan and ran toward the auditorium.
Arriving at the front entrance, they saw Cheng Wu on stage wearing a bright red off-the-shoulder gown, holding a microphone and hosting the gala.
It must have been delivered. Xia Xiaohan breathed a sigh of relief.
Once Cheng Wu retreated backstage, Ningning led Xiaohan around to the backstage entrance. Ningning pushed the door open directly. “Sister Wu! The key was stolen by Fan Jia!”
The backstage area went instantly silent. The resting performers, the logistics students, and the male co-host all looked at Ningning and Xiaohan, then slowly moved their gazes to the person beside Cheng Wu.
Indeed, the person standing next to Cheng Wu was Fan Jia.
He showed a look of astonishment, then smiled. “Ningning, you’re being mischievous again.”
There wasn’t a hint of warmth in Cheng Wu’s eyes, but she still smiled to smooth things over. “Everyone knows Ningning has this impulsive personality.”
The crowd chimed in one by one, all deciding that Ningning’s words were a joke.
Ningning turned and left in a huff. Xia Xiaohan sensed the atmosphere was very strange; she guiltily greeted Cheng Wu and hurried to chase after Ningning.
In the auditorium corridor, Ningning was viciously crunching on potato chips, constantly cursing, “Damned Fan Jia! Fan Jia is despicable!”
Xia Xiaohan stood beside her and suddenly asked, “Are Senior and Senior Fan Jia good friends?”
“Like hell they are!” Ningning couldn’t help but swear. She looked left and right before whispering in Xiaohan’s ear, “Fan Jia has been pursuing Sister Wu, but she doesn’t like him. She’s rejected him many times, but he’s like a piece of dog-skin plaster—you just can’t shake him off!”
Xia Xiaohan was stunned. So, Fan Jia liked her Senior.
Before long, a burst of gasps erupted from the auditorium. Sensing something was wrong, Ningning pulled Xiaohan and ran back inside.
All the lights in the auditorium had been extinguished, leaving only a single spotlight on the stage encircling Cheng Wu. Whether it was the effect of the light, Cheng Wu at this moment was breathtakingly beautiful. A faint smile played on her lips, but Xia Xiaohan could see that her brow was slightly furrowed very faintly, almost imperceptibly.
The senior doesn’t like this feeling.
As the male host retreated, another spotlight lit up at the other end of the stage, illuminating Fan Jia in a white shirt. He was holding a massive bouquet of fiery red roses, walking toward Cheng Wu step by step. The music switched to elegant instrumental music, snowflakes fell from above the stage, and mist swirled around the floor. Everything was as beautiful as a fairyland.
The entire venue was dead silent. Under the gaze of thousands, the atmosphere was heightened to the extreme.
The spotlights converged. Fan Jia, roses in hand, gazed at Cheng Wu and confessed with deep emotion: “A-Wu, from the first day I met you, I liked you. Every one of your smiles is deeply branded in my mind…”
Cheng Wu knew Fan Jia would confess, but she hadn’t expected him to start before the gala had even ended. The freshmen were all there, as were many teachers and students helping out. She took a deep breath, wanting to interrupt him as politely as possible. “Fan Jia, you”
“A-Wu!” Fan Jia suddenly dropped to one knee, looking up with eyes full of devotion. “Can you let me finish?”
There were many girls in the Management Department, and Fan Jia’s reputation as a “School Grass” (most handsome boy) had made many know him beforehand. Now, with such a careful arrangement and such a soulful confession, he directly touched countless young hearts.
The scene was filled with sounds of people catching their breath. Some girls couldn’t help but whisper, “Heavens! That’s so romantic!”
Below the stage, Xia Xiaohan’s brow was tightly furrowed. How romantic! He’s clearly trying to coerce Senior into saying yes!
“How is this romantic!”
Hearing the voice suddenly, Xia Xiaohan hurried to cover her mouth, only to realize it was Ningning muttering, “He’s clearly trying to coerce Sister Wu into agreeing! What a shameless person!”
On stage, Fan Jia spoke a long string of romantic words. Xia Xiaohan happened to look back and saw someone moved to tears!
But Cheng Wu’s expression was indifferent. Once he finished, she rejected him firmly and coldly: “I’m sorry, I don’t like you, so I do not accept your confession.”
The auditorium went silent in an instant.
Joy flashed in Ningning’s eyes. She pulled Xia Xiaohan up the steps onto the stage and came to Cheng Wu’s side.
At this point, Fan Jia stood up, asking with a face full of hurt, “Why?”
Before Ningning could snap at him, Cheng Wu suddenly took Xia Xiaohan’s hand. Her smile was reckless and enchanting. “Because the person I like is Xia Xiaohan.”
