My Soft, Delicate Fiancée Turned Out to Be an Alpha - Chapter 1
In City A, clouds drifted in the distance and traffic flowed endlessly.
“President Shen, tonight’s charity gala starts at 10:00 PM. Do you know when you’ll have time to try on your dress?”
“Around five, I suppose.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Shen Wanli glanced at the clock on the wall and felt a start of surprise. With a hoarse voice, she hung up the phone.
It was already noon. She stretched her body, which felt numb and uncomfortable from a hangover, and could not help thinking about the unexpected phone call she had received last night.
“Sister, my flight home is tomorrow night. Can you come pick me up?”
Shen Wanli had looked at that familiar number and ultimately decided to answer. Hearing Jiang Rou’s question left her somewhat dazed for a moment.
Had time really passed that quickly? Jiang Rou was already returning home? In the end, Shen Wanli suppressed the inexplicable emotions in her heart and replied with her usual gentle tone, “I’m sorry, Xiao Rou, I have matters to attend to tomorrow night.”
The person on the other end let out a sneer. “I knew that would be the result. Exactly when are you going to stop avoiding me?”
Shen Wanli was just about to explain when the line went dead. The speed at which the call was disconnected was enough to convey the anger on the other end.
Looking at the hung-up phone, Shen Wanli remained somewhat dazed. Avoiding her? This seemed to be the second time Jiang Rou had hung up on her. The first time was on the night Jiang Rou underwent secondary gender manifestation.
Shen Wanli rubbed her temples, which were throbbing from the hangover. Because she didn’t know how to face Jiang Rou, she had only been able to avoid her all this time.
In this world, people possessed six genders, divided into primary genders (male and female) and secondary genders (ABO).
The Jiang and Shen families had been close family friends for generations. Down to this generation, the two families only had two daughters: Jiang Rou and Shen Wanli.
Because modern testing institutions had an accuracy rate of nearly one hundred percent, Shen’s mother had sent the two girls in for testing when they were children.
Learning that Shen Wanli would manifest as an Alpha upon reaching adulthood, while Jiang Rou would manifest as an Omega, the two families happily arranged an engagement for them.
Jiang Rou was three years younger than Shen Wanli and looked like a finely carved, exquisite porcelain doll. Upon learning that she would have such a delicate and lovable wife, Shen Wanli was overjoyed.
Knowing she was older than Jiang Rou, Shen Wanli had always attended to caring for her fiancée personally. This resulted in Jiang Rou following closely behind Shen Wanli throughout their entire adolescence.
At the age of fourteen, Shen Wanli manifested as an Alpha just as predicted. However, after waiting several years, Jiang Rou still had not manifested.
Since childhood, Jiang Rou had possessed a great talent for painting. When an internationally renowned painter invited her abroad to become a university professor, Jiang Rou went overseas for her studies. The two of them agreed that once Jiang Rou graduated and returned home, they would get married.
To this day, Shen Wanli still could not forget that day. With a time difference of more than ten hours between the two countries, Shen Wanli had just woken up when she received a call from Jiang Rou.
Before answering, Shen Wanli had still worn a pampering smile. Jiang Rou had been extremely clingy since childhood; perhaps her classes had ended early today, which was why she was calling at such an hour.
Shen Wanli answered the phone, but the other end remained completely silent. Shen Wanli sensed something was amiss. “What is it, Xiao Rou? Did something happen?”
There was no sound for a long time. Just as Shen Wanli was wondering if she had accidentally pressed a button, suppressed sobbing came through the line.
Shen Wanli instantly panicked, her tone anxious as she asked, “Xiao Rou, why are you crying? Did something unpleasant happen? Tell your sister about it.”
“Sister, I, I’ve manifested,” Jiang Rou said between sobs.
Upon hearing this, Shen Wanli realized she had simply manifested.
When Omegas manifested, their emotions would be unusually fragile, and with Jiang Rou alone in a foreign country, fear was inevitable.
“So you’ve manifested. Manifestation is a good thing! I’ll buy a plane ticket and come accompany you tomorrow, so don’t be scared.”
Shen Wanli said this, having purchased the ticket the very moment Jiang Rou finished mentioning her manifestation.
Her fiancée had manifested; as her future husband, she naturally needed to go and accompany her properly.
“Then, Sister, after I manifest, will you still want me?”
Jiang Rou asked cautiously, her voice still thick with the heavy nasal tone of someone who had been crying.
Shen Wanli chuckled softly. “How could that be, you silly girl? Once you manifest, we’ll be getting married when you return.”
Shen Wanli coaxed Jiang Rou for quite a while before finally bringing a tearful smile back to her face.
It wasn’t until Shen Wanli arrived abroad that she found out why Jiang Rou had cried so heartbreakingly the day before.
That delicate, lovable Jiang Rou who loved to hug her and act spoiled had actually manifested as an Alpha?! Shen Wanli thought back to how things unfolded afterward, how she stayed with Jiang Rou for a long time, and upon returning home, spoke of this matter to both families, leading them to call off the engagement.
Recalling the past, Shen Wanli took out her phone and called the housekeeper, instructing him to send someone to the airport to pick up Jiang Rou and to inform Jiang Rou’s parents of the arrival.
At 10:00 PM, the charity gala commenced, attended entirely by social elites.
This particular banquet was hosted by a well-known philanthropist who happened to have some business dealings with Shen Wanli, leaving her with no way to decline.
At the gala, Shen Wanli was repeatedly toasted. Among the crowd were some business partners as well as merchants hoping to collaborate with the Shen Corporation.
Feeling somewhat dizzy, Shen Wanli sat down on a nearby sofa to rest. Immediately, quite a few Omegas came over to strike up a conversation. Everyone knew that Shen Wanli was still single and possessed a gentle temperament; seizing such a rare opportunity, these little Omegas naturally wanted to put in their best effort.
At that moment, the host’s voice rang out through the speakers: “Today, we will auction our final item, the painting Back by the artist Jiang Rou. Additionally, we have invited Jiang Rou herself to make an appearance at our gala tonight.”
As the words fell, Shen Wanli’s pupils dilated sharply as she looked up toward the stage at the figure she hadn’t seen in two years.
It was still that exquisite face, resembling a porcelain doll. Just looking at that face alone would certainly lead anyone to believe she was an Omega.
Two years apart, her frame had shot up like bamboo stalks, and she had grown remarkably tall. Shen Wanli felt that she was already taller than her present self.
With her mind in a daze, unable to hear what the people around her were saying anymore, Shen Wanli could only stumble slightly as she left the banquet hall.
The evening breeze brushed against Shen Wanli’s cheeks, its coolness helping to clear her head a little. After waiting a moment for the alcohol to wear off, she walked toward the parking lot.
Just as she stepped into the parking lot, she heard footsteps approaching from behind, getting closer and closer. Before Shen Wanli could realize that something was amiss, she was embraced from behind by the person who had caught up to her.
“It’s one thing that you didn’t come to pick me up, Sister, but why did you run away the moment you saw me?”
The breath brushed against Shen Wanli’s ear, carrying warmth mixed with a faint fragrance of tuberose. Hearing that voice, at once familiar and unfamiliar, left Shen Wanli with a complex jumble of emotions in her heart.
Unaccustomed to being held this way, Shen Wanli gently broke free from Jiang Rou’s embrace. “I genuinely had matters to attend to, but I already had Uncle Zhang send someone to pick you up.”
Jiang Rou ignored Shen Wanli’s reply. Her gaze was deep, fixed intensely upon Shen Wanli as if trying to suck her soul in. “If I hadn’t come today, how much longer did you plan on hiding from me?”
