- Chapter 66 - Yue Yiyao: I Will Join the Qiuqiu God Cult
As the letters on the building across the street changed, a strange screeching sound seemed to reach Yue Yiyao’s ears.
She instinctively looked at Gu Nanqiu, but saw strange snowflakes on the face before her. It was like the old, donation-funded TV at the orphanage long ago that always had static and noise.
The dense things constantly flickered, appearing and disappearing on Gu Nanqiu’s face.
“I won’t do this anymore,” Gu Nanqiu answered instinctively, noticing Yue Yiyao’s gaze.
Then, realizing she had said the wrong thing, Gu Nanqiu cleared her throat awkwardly: “This thing is really strange…”
But she didn’t wait for Yue Yiyao’s response.
Yue Yiyao’s attention was drawn back to the letters. As she focused, the noise in her ears amplified incessantly.
She watched those people smiling, waving their hands happily in the air, as if they were accomplishing the most glorious thing.
God knows how Yue Yiyao could see it so clearly.
She stared straight at them, instinctively reaching out to open the window.
Her wristwatch made a beeping sound, warning her of something.
Gu Nanqiu pressed a button on the side of the watch. The watch quieted down, then she restrained Yue Yiyao, covering Yue Yiyao’s eyes with her slightly cool hand.
A specially magnetic voice sounded in Yue Yiyao’s ear: “Yiyao, don’t look anymore.”
As her vision disappeared, the noise in her ears became increasingly clear.
“Hate her”
“Go die”
“Seriously, why is she standing next to the Qiuqiu God—”
“Ant, you should obediently wait for death”
“Don’t let me catch you”
“You better not—”
“Let me catch you—hehe, hehehe… heh…”
Then the sound disappeared, replaced by a strange song hummed by Gu Nanqiu. It sounded like an ancient folk song, yet was inexplicably familiar…
It took about half an hour for Yue Yiyao to wake up from the stimulus of the indiscriminate mental attack.
At this point, the blood vessels in her eyes were extremely prominent, and the veins on her forehead pulsed.
“What was that just now?” Yue Yiyao looked around somewhat vaguely, feeling that something was different about the room. She looked down at her watch. Her SAN value was about to drop to the 20s.
Yue Yiyao instantly tensed up. She quickly turned her head and saw Gu Nanqiu looking at her worriedly. Nanqiu didn’t seem to have been affected, and Yue Yiyao breathed a sigh of relief.
“What a mess… Seriously.” Yue Yiyao cursed softly, trying to get up in a fluster.
But because she moved too quickly, her vision went black, and she stumbled into Gu Nanqiu’s arms, landing right on Gu Nanqiu’s waist and abdomen.
Yue Yiyao looked down and saw Gu Nanqiu’s expression below her was startled, but it quickly returned to normal. Then, she propped up one hand and used the other to support Yue Yiyao’s lower back to prevent her from falling backward: “Did you get dizzy from hunger because you didn’t eat breakfast?”
“I was talking about now,” Gu Nanqiu added: “It seems someone over there triggered a rule just now, causing an incident across the entire area.”
Gu Nanqiu stared at Yue Yiyao’s lips. She instinctively swallowed, leaning forward and resting her head on Yue Yiyao’s chest: “Don’t move. Let me listen to see if your heart is beating normally.”
A steaming golden broth hotpot was wheeled in by a service attendant.
The first level of the cart, besides the hotpot, contained fresh beef, lamb, and shrimp paste made from freshly caught shrimp. The next level held fresh vegetables, still glistening with water.
The attendant pushed open another door, and a small dining room appeared before Yue Yiyao. Inside, there was a refrigerator, and below it, bright roses were displayed.
This was the first time Yue Yiyao had seen such a setting. She followed behind Gu Nanqiu and sat down on the first floor. She watched the attendant systematically take out two servings of carefully prepared dipping sauces and start cooking the food.
Yue Yiyao was a little unaccustomed to being served like this, but seeing Gu Nanqiu’s composed appearance across the table, Yue Yiyao took a sip of the orange juice beside her.
“Yiyao, there’s wine over there. Do you want another drink?” Gu Nanqiu’s voice sounded. Although her tone was normal and what she said was perfectly ordinary, Yue Yiyao always felt that Gu Nanqiu’s words carried a smile. It was like teasing a child, or teasing her beloved pet.
Thinking this, Yue Yiyao shook her head: “I really can’t appreciate the taste of that wine yesterday. The freshly squeezed juice is good.”
The attendant smiled and refilled Yue Yiyao’s glass: “Thank you for your liking. And on behalf of all the hotel staff, I apologize for the unpleasant experience you had due to the regional fluctuation just now. This juice contains a specialized nutrient solution made by our owner, which will allow you to recover better. We hope the rest of your trip will be more enjoyable—”
Specialized nutrient solution?
Yue Yiyao froze. She seemed a little confused as to why this attendant, who looked like an ordinary person, would say such a thing.
Noticing Madam Yue’s puzzled gaze, the attendant’s good training prompted her to explain again: “Starting two years ago, our city has frequently been affected by urban legend rules. It’s become commonplace for people to die every night. Our boss sought out some masters for this, and they performed some basic repairs and enhancements to this hotel. At the same time, they added a nutrient solution that stabilizes people’s mental state to the food. Please rest assured, these have all passed experiments and will be gradually promoted two years from now, striving to make them available to all ordinary people.”
This matched the information Yue Yiyao remembered from the original novel. Humanity was also upgrading in the fight against urban legends. One part was gaining strange abilities, like Gu Nanqiu, and another was through scientific equipment. But none of these could stop the rules from being triggered; they only provided some means of resistance.
The rule-maker is also bound by the rules. Yue Yiyao unseasonably recalled the forensic doctor’s words.
She glanced at her watch. Her mental state, which had just been a little over 30, had recovered to 57.
“Your boss is truly a great person,” Yue Yiyao sighed: “But why did such an incident happen in City A, and yet no news leaked out?”
“Because you are currently in City A, we can discuss this matter,” the attendant had finished separating the cooked beef and placed it in Yue Yiyao’s bowl, which she had instinctively moved forward. She patiently explained: “Once you leave City A, all of this will become a language that others cannot understand due to the rules’ restraints.”
“And we cannot escape this place.”
“If it weren’t for the protection of the boss here, our family would have long become feed for those monsters. The boss is truly a very good person.”
“Listening any further will affect Madam Yue’s appetite.” Perfectly timing the moment, she scooped up the tripe and sent it to the beautiful Madam Gu on the other side. Under the latter’s gaze, she swallowed the remaining words, concentrating on continuing her work, placing vegetables in the pot as instructed by the two distinguished guests.
Yue Yiyao, seeing the attendant’s reluctance to say more, swallowed her doubts.
She lowered her head and ate a piece of fatty beef. It tasted good.
Thinking about it, she had been preoccupied with questions and hadn’t properly enjoyed the food on the table.
“Nanqiu, this shrimp paste tastes great. I’ll research it when we go back,” Yue Yiyao continued to devour the food. The food at this five-star hotel was indeed different.
“Mhm, if you like it, you can ask them to make some lemon shrimp paste later.”
“That’s a good idea! We can have it when we get back.”
“Get back?” The attendant waited for their topic to end, then reminded them: “Madam Yue, I apologize, if it’s convenient, you can visit the hotel’s affiliated ecological mall today. After all, strange things have occurred again in the building next door. For your safety, please refrain from going out onto the street casually.”
“Is that so?” Yue Yiyao thought about her plans for the first day, which included the specialty street next to the hotel. There were many places there for photos and check-ins, but skipping it was fine. She had seen the ecological mall online before but dropped the idea when she saw it wasn’t open to the public. She hadn’t expected to access it through the hotel.
Wait, there should be other ways, but perhaps Yue Yiyao in City C was not qualified to know.
“Thank you for the suggestion. So, does that mean we can go out normally tomorrow?”
“Yes, exactly. Generally speaking, after a ‘game’ ends, there’s usually a half-month period of calm. After all, if the leeks are cut too quickly, they’ll soon run out.”
The attendant made an innocuous analogy: “Would you like to eat any other dishes?”
The hotel staff opened the screen, blocking the living room. Only a few shadows briefly flashed by, cleaning up the dining area.
Yue Yiyao sat on the sofa in the living room, scrolling through nearby information. Gu Nanqiu sat at the desk nearby, typing something on the computer.
“Nanqiu, what kind of monster do you think exists in City A? It seems exceptionally powerful.”
Looking at the latest reports about City A on her phone, humans here were actually divided into three layers. Some even announced on the internet that they were winners of the game, having gained significant benefits. Many people replied with envy, and some were asking if anyone they knew had survived or what they looked like. There were also some bloggers venturing into that building under the guise of exploration.
Among this information, Yue Yiyao also saw the hotel’s recruitment advertisement, but the number of likes was low, and only a few people were asking if they could be hired without being paid.
“I also found some things here.” Gu Nanqiu pushed the computer forward: “The appearance of this urban legend was triggered after the CEO of that building died suddenly from overworking during an all-nighter, and it descended upon City A.”
Gu Nanqiu paused, rubbing her temples: “I’m sorry. I originally just wanted to come here for a vacation and rest, but now it seems there are many places we can’t go.”
Yue Yiyao walked over. She leaned in to look at the densely packed text on the computer screen: “It’s okay. Maybe we would encounter something like this in other places too.”
After all, Nanqiu is the “protagonist.”
“But I have another question.” Yue Yiyao thought of the thing that had caused her dizziness: “If this rule is related to that CEO, then that strange sight of people hanging themselves into letters—was that CEO trying to show love?”
“It couldn’t be that the person the CEO liked is in this building, right?” Yue Yiyao swallowed. Her gaze fell on Gu Nanqiu, who still looked somewhat bewildered and unaware of what was happening.
Recalling the “Qiuqiu… God?” she had heard in her head, she came up with a bold guess. Having spent so much time with Gu Nanqiu, she was accustomed to other people liking her. Many people called Gu Nanqiu a goddess.
“If that monster is showing love to you… do you think there’s any possibility of that?”
At this, silence filled the room.
