- My Sister Never Said She Was a Creepy Tale
- Chapter 54 - Strawberry... Cake, Now Yue Yiyao's Lifelong Enemy
Yue Yiyao stared at Wu Zhen, not missing a single expression on her face.
It didn’t look like she was lying.
There was remorse, disappointment, and a hint of self-blame on her face.
After a long pause, Yue Yiyao neither refused nor agreed.
She looked at the cake shop behind Wu Zhen, where a few more crestfallen people walked out, apparently having failed to buy the cake they wanted.
“Do you know about the Wish Cake?”
Wu Zhen shook her head, asking Yue Yiyao curiously: “What is that? I haven’t heard of it.”
“Does this thing have anything to do with my cousin?”
Yue Yiyao quickly explained the situation.
Concluding her explanation, Yue Yiyao frowned: “Your cousin… well… he might already be dead.”
“It’s not about whether I forgive him or not. I was never familiar with him, so you don’t need to tell me all this.”
She had witnessed He Wu removing his own head a few hours ago; he certainly wouldn’t survive that.
Yue Yiyao didn’t want to be inexplicably burdened with such a huge responsibility when she hadn’t done anything.
“If you are choosing to help me for his sake, then forget it.”
“I am not some incredibly powerful person; I cannot save him.”
The blunt words made Wu Zhen’s face pale.
“No, that’s impossible. This is a time of peace; how could such a thing happen?”
“Yue Yiyao, please don’t joke around… I promise you, I will never approach Gu Nanqiu again… My father only has this one nephew, and if he finds out something happened to him… he’ll kill me.”
Wu Zhen managed a strained smile, a hint of flattery in her eyes: “I’ll agree to anything you ask. Please don’t joke like this. I beg you.”
Although this time wasn’t strictly rush hour, two people standing on the roadside talking was quite conspicuous.
Seeing passersby constantly casting strange glances their way, Yue Yiyao sighed: “I’m not familiar with him. If you feel better blaming me for this, then go ahead and blame me.”
“As for your father, that’s your family matter. If you need anything, you can follow legal procedures and call the police.”
“I have things to do; don’t waste my time.”
Dropping this sentence, Yue Yiyao walked towards her target cake shop, not giving Wu Zhen any further attention.
They are not important.
After searching several shops in a row, Yue Yiyao still hadn’t found the so-called Matcha-flavored cake.
Several passersby who had been searching with her gave up after checking a few shops without any success.
As they left, they watched Yue Yiyao, like a diligent old ox, hurriedly rush off to another shop.
They gathered and agreed that this person must have some kind of unique hardship, otherwise, she wouldn’t be so obsessed with a single cake.
The group huddled and whispered for a bit, and soon caught up with Yue Yiyao: “Stranger friend, hang in there!”
Saying this, they shoved the little tips they had copied down regarding the Wish Cake into Yue Yiyao’s hand.
On the paper, written in bold, unrestrained characters, were instructions: “After 6 PM, the chance of the cake refreshing increases.”
It also marked several cake shops where the Matcha-flavored Strawberry Cake was likely to appear.
A few had big crosses marked on them, next to a large grimace: “This place has absolutely none! Anyone who comes here is unlucky.”
Looking at the girls’ smiling backs, Yue Yiyao paused, then rushed to catch up with them: “That cake, if you eat it, you will pay a price—such as becoming a soulless puppet or a deranged believer. If you don’t have a specific wish you desperately want to fulfill, it’s best not to touch it.”
The girls hadn’t expected Yue Yiyao to chase them and say this; they were stunned for a moment.
The shortest one, who had given the note to Yue Yiyao, was the first to react: “If that’s true, why are you looking so hard?”
“Because a very important friend of mine was stolen by this thing.” Yue Yiyao looked at the note in her hand. She organized her words: “Someone made a wish to be with her.”
“So, the cake took the person away. Most likely, it’s brainwashing my friend, or perhaps turning her into a soulless puppet, which would also satisfy the condition of ‘being together.'”
The girls exchanged wide-eyed glances, completely failing to grasp the situation.
They looked at each other, apparently doubting the veracity of the story.
The tallest girl in the group thought of something and spoke up: “Speaking of which, wasn’t there that absurd couple in our class? The guy started dating the richest girl in our class out of nowhere after eating that cake.”
“The guy eats and drinks everything provided by her, and often belittles her…”
The group fell silent simultaneously.
Seeing that the girls now had their own thoughts and likely wouldn’t seek the so-called Wish Cake anymore, Yue Yiyao turned and continued toward her next destination; time was of the essence.
She hadn’t walked far when the girls caught up and patted her on the shoulder.
It was still the shortest girl. She tilted her head back and patted her chest: “Hey—let us help you, too. Let’s start a group chat. We can split up and search different shops. It’s too tiring for you to do it alone.”
Yue Yiyao stopped, turning to look at the girls she didn’t know, confused as to why they would help her after she only said a few words.
Were they helping her? Based on what they said, Yue Yiyao was worried she might have misunderstood their intentions.
Seeing Yue Yiyao’s frowning, stunned appearance, the short girl continued to explain: “No ulterior motive. Based on what you said, we deduced that the girl in our class was definitely not willing either. Even though she and I are just classmates and have had some disagreements, we are all girls. If someone keeps using this wicked thing to make these nonsensical wishes, the number of victims will only grow, and we might be the next one.”
“Let me confirm one more time: what you just said really isn’t made up, is it?”
Saying this, the short girl glanced at her friends, sighing: “Never mind, never mind, you don’t need to lie to us. Don’t say anything more. Add me as a friend quickly. I’ll set up the group.”
Five minutes later, Yue Yiyao haphazardly received the range of stores she was responsible for. One of the sturdier girls took her to borrow a small electric scooter.
The sturdy girl looked at Yue Yiyao: “Looks great. Alright, let’s go! Remember to post the information about the shops you visit in the group, and I’ll go write up a draft! Send messages to our friends and wait for more sisters to come help us!”
After visiting two locations, Yue Yiyao saw that the group chat had grown from the original five people to twenty.
Everyone was posting messages: “XX Cake Shop bought and tasted. It does not have the flavor you mentioned.”
As if by tacit agreement.
Yue Yiyao looked at the screen, wondering why they were buying and tasting the cakes, when she saw a message tagging her: “Friend, we forgot to tell you, these cakes look just like ordinary ones. You must eat them to know if it’s the right one!”
The newest message that popped up was: “!!! Emergency help! I don’t have enough pocket money. Can someone lend me some? I suspect I’ve found the right flavor here.”
Immediately, the group chat was filled with the sound of “red envelopes” (digital cash gifts).
“Received. Please keep track of the ledger; I’ll reimburse you when the time comes.” After sending this message, Yue Yiyao sent a red envelope worth 20,000 to the group for them to take.
“Did I miscount the zeros? Why do I have 1,000 here?”
“I’ll return it to you later. I spent all my money buying albums recently. Thank you, boss!”
Yue Yiyao instructed the staff to cut small slices of all the strawberry cakes displayed in the cabinet, offering the rest to subsequent customers. Meanwhile, she expressed her gratitude in the group chat, promising to treat them to dinner and give out more red envelopes.
The cashier, who was processing the transaction, watched Yue Yiyao’s extravagant demeanor and thought to herself, Another rich person wasting money for the sake of some story.
Since the tip was generous, she naturally wouldn’t speak ill of the customer.
She meticulously instructed the staff to cut only a corner, ensuring not to damage the original shape of the little cakes, so it wouldn’t affect the subsequent gifting.
Yue Yiyao casually picked up her phone to look at the group messages. People in different shops were all asking why so many people were buying strawberry cake today? Was there some kind of event?
A moment later, a public account post was shared in the group link. It contained several self-accounts from students detailing what happened to people around them after eating the cake.
The staff member carefully read the article. Her eyes landed on the person sitting at the table, meticulously tasting the cake. Her expression was focused, devoid of any love for the dessert…
“Hello, excuse me, are you the person involved in this story?” After stepping behind the kitchen to finish a call with her manager, the employee walked up to Yue Yiyao: “It will take you a long time to distinguish between all these cakes. Do you need us to help?”
Thirty minutes later, finally, in a very secluded corner, someone ate a Matcha-flavored little cake.
Yue Yiyao hurriedly grabbed her phone, thanked the staff member, and rushed outside.
Her phone vibrated with messages; the “lucky person” who had eaten the cake was frantically asking for help in the group.
“Hurry up! I feel like something weird is coming my way.”
Another five minutes passed: “Ahhh! Someone sent me a strange message asking what my wish is! I can’t handle this! What kind of wish could I possibly have? World peace?”
“Are you on your way yet?”
“He thinks I’m replying too slowly! He’s here!!!”
“I’m talking nonsense with Him! I’m already asking why human life is so meaningless!!! Family, help me! Are there any more nonsensical phrases I can use? I said I want to make a wish later, and He told me it wouldn’t count if I waited!!!”
When Yue Yiyao rushed into the cake shop, she saw the girl in the corner furiously typing, her feet probably curling enough to excavate a three-bedroom apartment. The girl’s head was almost buried under the table.
Sitting across from her was the server who had previously delivered the cake to Gu Nanqiu. She was still wearing a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, and her clothes were as perfectly ironed as before. She sat on the sofa with her legs crossed, smiling faintly at the girl: “Is this the person who really wants to make a wish?”
Without giving the server a second glance, Yue Yiyao covered the distance in three steps to the cake. She picked up a clean fork from the side and cut off a small portion.
The taste that landed in her mouth was exactly what Yue Yiyao had expected—Mango flavor, which represented the price to be paid.
