My Secret Cultivator Spouse Is the Demon Lord - Chapter 6
By the time Xu Xianqing was brought back, Ye Ming had already lost consciousness.
Xu Xianqing held her hand…it was scorching hot. She reached up to touch her cheek and forehead; both were burning with fever.
“Miss Ye, Miss Ye!” Xu Xianqing called out to her twice, but received no response.
Ye Qingfeng stood by, watching. Xu Xianqing turned to him and pleaded, “Patriarch Ye, please bring a doctor for Miss Ye.”
“Sigh.” Ye Qingfeng shook his head. “It’s useless. You… just stay with her for her final moments.”
Though Ye Qingfeng felt a twinge of sorrow, it was fleeting. The only reason he felt any grief at all was that he and his younger brother had shared a decent bond in their youth. But everything had changed over the years.
Who could have guessed that human plans would pale before heaven’s design? His father had schemed so much for his brother, yet now both father and daughter were dead. In the end, the Ye family had still fallen into his hands.
The moment the thought crossed Ye Qingfeng’s mind, his sorrow dissolved completely, replaced by a smile he couldn’t hold back.
Once Ye Qingfeng left, only Xu Xianqing and Ye Ming remained in the quiet, secluded courtyard.
Xu Xianqing forced herself up and went to brew a portion of the medicine she had brought back earlier. She carried the dark bowl to Ye Ming’s bedside and brought the liquid to her lips, but this time, Ye Ming couldn’t swallow it.
“Miss Ye, please drink some medicine,” Xu Xianqing urged, growing increasingly frantic. She tried to gently pry Ye Ming’s lips apart, but the liquid simply ran out from the corners of her mouth.
At a complete loss after several failed attempts, Xu Xianqing took a mouthful of the medicine herself and leaned down to feed her, mouth to mouth. Proceeding so slowly, she managed to get the entire bowl of medicine down.
“Cough… cough…”
A quarter of an hour later, Ye Ming woke up.
She seemed somewhat dazed, staring blankly as she lay in bed.
“Miss Ye.”
It wasn’t until she heard that familiar voice calling out to her that Ye Ming turned her head. “My wife… You’re back… cough… Did they mistreat you?”
“No.” Xu Xianqing took her hand, only to be struck by a sudden wave of panic. “Why… why aren’t you hot anymore?”
If her earlier fever had been a brief flare-up before the end, then now that her fever had subsided, was her fire spiritual root running out of energy?
Seeing the panic in her eyes, Ye Ming reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from Xu Xianqing’s forehead. For the first time, she truly looked at her.
“My wife,” Ye Ming smiled.
Even with her face deathly pale and worn by illness, her smile was breathtakingly beautiful.
But Xu Xianqing had no heart to appreciate the beauty; a sharp, agonizing ache began to spread through her chest.
“Miss Ye… Miss Ye… I’ll go brew more medicine. I’ll go get a doctor. Just… wait for me…” Xu Xianqing started to stand up.
But Ye Ming caught her wrist. She barely had any strength left, yet Xu Xianqing could feel the sheer intent behind her light hold.
“Miss Ye, I’m going to get a doctor,” Xu Xianqing said, her eyes brimming with tears.
Looking at the pain and distress written across her face, Ye Ming couldn’t help but sigh softly. “In the past, you rarely showed much emotion. Today, you are finally worried for me.”
Ye Ming smiled again. “And yet… we have been bound in marriage for three years, and I have never once seen you smile.”
“When you get better, I will smile.” Xu Xianqing didn’t even remember how to smile anymore, but she knew in her heart that if Miss Ye recovered, she would smile from the bottom of her soul.
Ye Ming gently released her wrist and withdrew her hand. She spoke softly, “My wife, help me change my clothes.”
Xu Xianqing looked at her, shaking her head uncontrollably. “Miss Ye…”
“My wife… will you not grant me even this last request?”
Xu Xianqing sank to her knees beside the bed. “Miss Ye, if you just get better, I will grant you a thousand…ten thousand…requests.”
Ye Ming raised her hand and rested her fingertips against Xu Xianqing’s chest. “The heart-binding pact must be acting up. Does it hurt?”
Cold sweat stood out on Xu Xianqing’s forehead. Her heart was aching violently, but she didn’t care at all. “Miss Ye, once you get better, it won’t hurt anymore.”
Ye Ming took a clean cloth and gently wiped the sweat from her forehead. “Help me change. Once I’m changed, I still have a few things to tell you… My wife, please, hurry.”
Wiping her tears, Xu Xianqing went to the wardrobe and pulled out a red dress paired with a black robe. The garments were far too loose, draped over Ye Ming like paper clothes on a frame.
They were shroud garments…it was only natural that they did not fit well.
After Xu Xianqing helped her into the robes, Ye Ming spoke again, her voice barely a whisper. “I’m running out of time… Wipe my face, please.”
“There’s time, there’s still time,” Xu Xianqing murmured softly as she gently wiped her face, keeping her voice low for fear of disturbing her.
Ye Ming tried to curve her lips into a smile, but could no longer hold it.
“My wife,” Ye Ming said. “I have two final things to entrust to you.”
“Tell me.” Xu Xianqing sat by the bed and held her hand. The warmth was rapidly draining from it, and Xu Xianqing instinctively began rubbing it to keep it warm.
Ye Ming said, “Ye Qingfeng promised me that after I die, the Ye family will give me a grand funeral. But I don’t trust him. My wife, could you keep watch for me? After my seventh day has passed, visit my grave one last time and burn some spirit paper for me. Once you’ve done that, leave Gu City… and go as far away as you can.”
Xu Xianqing had originally thought that after Miss Ye passed, she would spend the rest of her life guarding her grave.
But Ye Ming’s next words shattered that thought. “Do not stay in Gu City. Do not guard my grave. My wife… head south. There is a place called Medicine King Valley in the south. Perhaps they can cure the pain of your heart-binding pact.”
Xu Xianqing remained silent. Ye Ming lightly squeezed her hand. “My wife… promise me.”
“…Mhm.” With red eyes, Xu Xianqing lowered her head and gave a muffled node.
Ye Ming continued, “The second thing. My wife… in the small wooden box beside my pillow are a few belongings my mother left for me. They aren’t worth anything, so the Ye family won’t care for them. But if I die and they remain here, they will surely be ruined. I hope you will take them with you when you leave. In this world, there is no one else I can trust… except you.”
Xu Xianqing couldn’t bring herself to answer; she feared that if she opened her mouth, she would burst into tears.
“My wife…”
Xu Xianqing felt the hand softly holding hers gradually lose its grip, until it slipped completely from her palm and dropped onto the bed.
“Miss Ye!” Xu Xianqing cried out in agony, but no one answered her ever again.
