- Chapter 2.3 - Morning Agitation— “The Prince’s Arrival”
“Lady Serena, it is morning. Could you please wake up?”
I woke up to the sound of a faint knock and a maid’s soft voice.
Still half-asleep, I sat up and rubbed my heavy eyelids while looking around. Right, this is the Duke’s mansion, my bedroom… My body feels heavy because I was so tired last night.
“Oh, yeah… sorry, I’ll be up in a minute.”
After my clumsy reply, the maid said, “Understood,” and left the room.
I sat on the bed in a daze for a while. —There are too many things to think about. If the engagement isn’t broken like this, how should I act? Besides, I don’t think Lily, the game’s heroine, will just stay quiet.
Just then, the maid came back with hurried footsteps.
“L-Lady Serena, actually I heard that the First Prince is waiting in front of the mansion…!”
“…What?”
With my brain just waking up, it took time to understand. The Prince? At my house this early in the morning?
Feeling confused, I hurried to get ready. After that attempted “punishment” yesterday, what kind of face does he plan to show when he sees me? I really didn’t think he would actually come.
The maid skillfully helped me change, and by the time I finished tying my hair, my heart was thumping with anxiety. I walked quickly down the hallway toward the drawing room on the first floor, where the butler and guard knights were waiting and whispering.
And standing at the back of the room was Alexis Valentia himself.
Just like yesterday, his golden hair was neatly styled, and he looked at me with his handsome face, but his expression seemed somewhat stiff. However, I didn’t see the same pain in his eyes as last night perhaps he has regained his calm a little.
“Good morning, Serena. …How are you feeling?”
I instinctively flinched at his words, which sounded as if he were worried about me. Would someone really come all this way so early in the morning just to ask “how are you feeling”? As I froze in confusion, he took a step closer and lowered his voice.
“The punishment is… still on hold. To make sure you don’t get caught up in more suspicion, let’s head to the academy together.”
The academy—right, the “Royal Academy” we attend was the original stage. It’s a place where children of nobles and royals are enrolled, and in the story, it’s a treasure chest of major events.
To be honest, I feel heavy-hearted about going to the academy after making such a scene. But Alexis invited me to the carriage as if it were the most natural thing to do.
“Because of what happened last night, the academy is in an uproar. People probably don’t accurately understand our situation yet. …If we travel separately, the rumors will only get worse. So for today, I will take responsibility for taking you there and bringing you back.”
The phrase “take responsibility” made my heart beat in a strange way. Ah, there it is again. It was the same last night. Every time he acts like he is aware that I am his “fiancée,” an indescribable feeling stirs deep in my chest.
“…I understand.”
Finding no reason to refuse, I gave a small nod. Looking at him, Alexis was pretending to be calm, but I thought the tips of his ears looked slightly red. I might be wrong, though.
The servants nearby were a bit restless with surprise and excitement. The Prince, who everyone thought was about to punish her, had come to pick up Serena so gallantly. Even I am confused.
