- Chapter 2.2 - Returning Home and Wavering Feelings — "Night at the Duke’s Mansion"
The carriage traveled along the dark night road and arrived at the Duke’s mansion well after midnight. The gates of the estate were wide open, and the waiting servants busily came out to greet us.
—The Duke’s house, the home of Serena Leclere. Since I just reincarnated, it doesn’t feel very real to me, but I hear it is a very powerful and famous family in this country. However, until just a moment ago, I was a normal college student in my past life. The situation of returning to a giant mansion still doesn’t feel like reality.
As soon as I stepped off the carriage, an old gentlemanly butler with graying hair ran over.
“My Lady, you have returned. Are you safe? I have heard a little about the commotion at the ball.”
I flinched at his words. No doubt rumors like “The villainess was condemned” are already flying around. Looking at the expressions of the servants, I think they are worried deep down too.
I can’t truly feel the time I’ve spent living as Serena, and I don’t know what the “correct” way to act is. So, I just gave a short answer, “Yes, I’m fine,” and hurried to my room.
After passing through a long hallway and opening a grand door, I found the room that is my—Serena’s—bedroom. There was a canopy bed, and just stepping inside made me feel immersed in a world of noble tastes. Silk curtains, classical paintings… everything looked “unrealistic.”
However, perhaps because I was exhausted, I didn’t have the energy to be surprised by such things. I quickly sank into the bed without even fully changing my clothes. My head felt heavy, like it might split open. Surely, anyone would be worn out after being stood “one step away from a condemnation event” on their very first day of reincarnation.
“…What a strange day. Really, what should I do?”
My whispered words were the only thing that melted into the darkness.
If the broken engagement had gone as planned, I might be causing trouble for the Duke’s house by now. But tonight, Alexis took back his declaration of punishment and led me away. And it seems he is carrying some strange distress.
“Is it possible that Alexis has feelings left for me?”
I want to laugh it off, thinking that’s impossible. Compared to the heroine, the villainess is the hated one. Even in the Prince’s route in the game, I don’t think there were any descriptions of him “doting” on her.
But those complicated eyes are burned into my mind and won’t leave. He looked pained, as if he was about to say, “I don’t want to punish you.” —If he really had affection for me, why would it lead to condemnation in the villainess route?
“…It’s no use thinking about it. The situation will move again tomorrow anyway.”
I told myself that and closed my eyes. But I couldn’t fall asleep easily. Memories of my distant past life and the difficult reality after reincarnation spun around in my brain. In the end, long after midnight had passed, my consciousness finally began to fade.
