- Chapter 2.10 - An Afterschool "Declaration" — Words That Shake the Academy
After school. When all the classes for today had finished, I made my way to Alexis. Since there were no more classes, he was chatting quietly with his noble friends, but he stood up immediately when he saw me.
“Serena? What is it?”
The nobles around him were looking at me with wary eyes, but I approached the Prince without caring. I pushed down the fast beating of my heart, took a breath, and spoke.
“Alexis… no, Your Highness.
—I am going to ‘break’ the academy’s romance game for you. I’ll destroy all the pretty words and the act of playing the heroine.”
The surrounding students gasped at those mysterious words. Of course, they did. They probably have no idea what I am declaring.
But I am certain. By getting ahead of the scenario Lily is setting up, I will change the “rules of this world” myself and by declaring this to the Prince, it should shake him up even more.
Alexis blinked in confusion and opened his mouth.
“What on earth are you talking about…? A game?”
“Well, I’ll tell you the details later. Anyway, I will reveal why Lily is approaching you and her intent to frame me. …I’m not going to break you, but the ‘fairy tale’ that is being built around you.”
It might sound like a provocation from a typical villainess, but I stared at him with a strong gaze. If Alexis really has feelings for me, he should accept this without running away.
On the other hand, the people around us were stunned. It’s no wonder, since Serena Leclere was speaking as if she were choosing to be the villain herself.
“Have you gone mad?”
The Prince asked in a low voice, and I replied with a smirk.
“Maybe. But if you won’t abandon me, then I have things to do. …If you want to break the engagement, say it right now.”
In response to my challenging words, Alexis was silent for a moment. Then, very quietly, he whispered, “I won’t say it.”
At that moment, a strange sense of relief ran through my chest. Is this okay? It might really ruin the game’s script.
But he no longer looked pained. Instead, he looked back at me directly, as if he had made up his mind.
“I understand. —If you are going to go that far, I will be prepared too. I will properly investigate whether Lily’s actions are true or false, and I want to know your secret too. If you really intend to break this ‘game’ you speak of, I will go along with it.”
The whispering voices of the students around us grew louder. It must have been a shocking exchange. But I gave a firm nod in response to Alexis’s answer.
