My Possessive Boss Is Unexpectedly Needy - Chapter 23
Chapter 23
Li Ruixi arched her brow and was just about to agree when Li Yiyang’s voice drifted over from behind.
“I’ll give my sister a ride back.”
Li Ruixi’s brow tightened. Looking at Li Yiyang standing beside her, she felt a sudden, sharp urge to slap him.
Lu Yeyan glanced at Li Ruixi, then at Li Yiyang.
“Fine. I’ll be heading out first, then.”
With that, Lu Yeyan turned and got into the car. Watching the vehicle drive away, Li Ruixi’s eyes instantly turned dark and cold.
Li Yiyang patted her shoulder and said, “He isn’t the same Lu Yeyan he used to be. He’s a man with a wife now. You’d better watch yourself.”
Irritated, Li Ruixi glared at him. “What are you talking about? It’s not like I’m forcing myself to stay by his side; Lu Yeyan was the one who invited me back. Things are going to be different now.”
Li Yiyang sighed. “Whatever. Just take it easy, so you don’t end up looking for trouble.” After saying that, he started walking away.
“Hey! Where are you going?”
“To get the car!”
…
Inside the Car
Lu Yeyan looked at the silent Yu Zining and asked, “Why?”
Yu Zining looked up in surprise.
“Why did you splash the wine on Li Yiyang?”
As expected, nothing escaped Lu Yeyan’s eyes.
Yu Zining let out a sigh. “Can I say… it’s because I didn’t want to see you getting so close to Li Ruixi?”
The moment the words left his mouth, Yu Zining regretted it. Even though he truly felt stifled seeing Li Ruixi and Lu Yeyan together, why did he have to say it out loud? He expected Lu Yeyan to get angry—to tell him it wasn’t his place to interfere.
Instead, Lu Yeyan reached out and grasped Yu Zining’s slender fingers, looking at him intently.
“I was inconsiderate.”
Is Lu Yeyan actually… bowing to me? Yu Zining was stunned. Since Lu Yeyan had put it that way, Zining was naturally happy.
“It’s… it’s fine. It was for your work, after all.”
The car fell into a deep silence. For some reason, both of them felt a flicker of awkwardness. It was that classic moment where the air suddenly turns still.
…
As soon as they returned to the villa, Yu Zining was bombarded with messages from Li Yiyang.
Yu Zining helplessly found a picture of a movie theater online and said he was watching a film, which was why he hadn’t replied. He also told Li Yiyang that he hadn’t returned to H City.
Looking at the photo Zining sent, Li Yiyang rested his chin on his hand. “Is it really just a coincidence?” Thinking back to the scene at the gala, none of the people there matched his mental image of “Teacher Lemon,” so he chose to believe it.
Yu Zining stared at his phone screen and let out a sigh of relief.
“What are you doing?”
Lu Yeyan walked in unnoticed. He had just showered, and droplets of water still clung to his damp hair. He wasn’t wearing a robe, only a towel wrapped around his waist. The lines of his abdominal muscles traced a perfect physique.
Yu Zining was mesmerized, momentarily dazed. Lu Yeyan walked closer and lightly flicked his forehead.
“Have you seen enough?”
Yu Zining was snapped back to reality. He jerked his head down, his face turning beet red all the way to his ears. Although he and Lu Yeyan had… well, he was always pinned to the bed and hadn’t had a chance to look at Lu Yeyan’s body so clearly.
Lu Yeyan leaned down, whispering in his ear, “What? Want to try it out?”
Yu Zining’s eyes widened. He pushed Lu Yeyan away and bolted for the door. “No! I… I’m going to shower!”
“Do you want me to help you?” Lu Yeyan called out after him. Watching the “startled rabbit” flee, a seductive smile played on his lips.
By the time Yu Zining returned to the bedroom, Lu Yeyan had already fallen asleep. He had indeed been exhausted by the social events of the past few days.
Yu Zining looked at Lu Yeyan’s face and gently reached out to touch his cheek.
Suddenly, Lu Yeyan jolted awake. He grabbed Yu Zining’s wrist with a grip of steel, his eyes full of a rage so intense it looked like he might devour him. Zining was terrified.
Once Lu Yeyan recognized Zining’s face, his eyes calmed instantly, and he slowly released his grip.
“Did you… have a nightmare?” Zining asked. It was hard to believe the man before him—filled with such anger and panic—was the same Lu Yeyan.
Lu Yeyan took a long breath. “No. I’m just used to sleeping lightly.”
“Do you always sleep like that? Are you afraid someone will hurt you? But… this is your home.”
Lu Yeyan patted the space beside him, signaling Zining to lie down. Zining obeyed, and Lu Yeyan pulled him gently into his arms.
“A-Ning, remember: don’t trust anyone in this world, okay?”
Yu Zining smiled. “Not even you?”
It was meant as a joke, but Lu Yeyan didn’t answer. He simply closed his eyes. Yu Zining didn’t speak further and quietly stayed by his side, eventually drifting into sleep.
After an unknown amount of time, Lu Yeyan opened his eyes. Looking at the person sleeping soundly beside him, a strange, nameless emotion stirred in his heart. He got up, threw on a robe, and walked out.
He stopped at the door of his study and entered a code that he found personally eyesore to open the door. Inside, the walls were lined with towering bookshelves. He walked to the innermost section and pushed a specific red-covered book.
A gap opened in the middle of the bookshelves. He stepped inside.
The space was small and windowless. In the center hung a large funeral portrait of a middle-aged man who bore a striking resemblance to Lu Yeyan. Aside from that, the walls were covered in photos, newspapers, and documents.
Lu Yeyan stared at the portrait, his brow furrowed in sorrow. But when his gaze shifted to the photos below, his eyes filled with pure rage.
Finally, his eyes landed on one particular photograph: Yu Zining, disguised as a woman, working at a cafe.
In Lu Yeyan’s eyes, a dark, complex shadow appeared. It was an unreadable, tangled emotion.
…
The Ou Family Villa
A woman looked at He Yilun, who was still working at his computer, and placed a plate of fruit on the desk.
“Son, have some fruit,” Zheng Xiuying said with a smile.
He Yilun looked up. “When is he coming back?”
Zheng Xiuying shook her head. “I don’t know.”
He Yilun closed his laptop and rubbed his temples with his long fingers. “After all these years, after everything I’ve done for the company… Hah. I guess a stepson is still just a stepson!”
