My Husband is Suspicious - Episode 16
So, Dreid was not in the mansion at this moment. Eleanor wanted to know about Dreid. Why was he interfering with her business?
To do that, she needed evidence she could learn about Dreid. And Dreid was someone who lived here. Which meant she could search Dreid’s office or bedroom.
‘Why did I try to find evidence of my husband from afar? When the evidence might be right in front of me.’
As soon as she thought that, Eleanor immediately went up to Dreid’s office. Now was a good opportunity.
Dreid had also said he would return in three days. That meant she didn’t have to worry about him possibly coming in.
It felt as if the heavens had given her an opportunity.
With a pounding heart, Eleanor opened his office. Unlike Eleanor’s office, his was incredibly neat. It was so tidy that not a speck of dust could be seen. Eleanor looked around the surroundings with wonder, as if seeing it for the first time.
In fact, she had barely ever entered Dreid’s office. He didn’t spend much time in his office to begin with, and Eleanor had no reason to go in.
There were more books in the office than she expected. The subjects were diverse, from books on mathematical formulas that Eleanor disliked to history. Eleanor scanned the titles on the bookshelf and wondered where he might have put important items.
“If it were me, I would have put it in a drawer.”
Eleanor walked straight to his desk. She checked the surface of the desk first, just in case. But it was so neatly cleaned that there was nothing to find. It was all bank-related documents. Documents that weren’t particularly suspicious.
At that point, Eleanor gave up on the desk surface and opened the drawers. Fortunately, the drawers were not locked and opened smoothly.
But again, there was nothing special. Just a slender black ink pen, an unopened ink bottle, a letter opener, and neatly cut paper.
Eleanor couldn’t hide her disappointment.
“I thought there would be something.”
Still, she felt she had to check the other drawers, so she opened them one by one. Each drawer she opened was the same. Some drawers were completely empty.
‘What, does he even work here? Or does he just read books?’
The surroundings were so neat that she doubted if he actually worked there.
If it had been messy like Eleanor’s office, at least there would have been fun in searching. This place was so neatly organized that there was nothing to find. Everything was clearly visible.
Eleanor listlessly opened the last drawer. Her motivation had waned a bit after seeing the empty drawers earlier. As she opened the drawer without any expectation, she heard a rattling sound. As soon as she heard it, Eleanor felt her motivation surge.
“There seems to be something.”
Eleanor quickly searched inside the drawer. At first glance, it seemed empty, but there must be a reason for that sound. Eleanor fumbled around, reaching towards where the sound seemed to come from. Then, she felt a hard-wooden box. At that moment, a bright smile spread across her face.
“Of course.”
This was Dreid’s home; he must keep something. It was surely an important item.
With a pounding heart, Eleanor carefully placed the wooden box on the desk. The wooden box was surprisingly small. It was about the size of her palm, and a lock was attached to the lid.
Eleanor didn’t get frustrated by the lock; she smiled. Instead, seeing the lock made her feel even more proud. It seemed like something important was inside.
And a lock was nothing. Eleanor, who had investigated countless people and found treasures, could pick locks with her eyes closed.
With a relaxed mind, Eleanor took out the pin she always wore in her hair and carefully inserted it into the lock. She found the interlocking points little by little, gently turning the pin.
After turning it a few times, she felt the interlocking point. Eleanor didn’t hesitate and turned the pin with force. Then, she heard the welcome sound of a click.
Eleanor tossed the pin aside and immediately opened the wooden box. But as soon as she opened it, she was quite disappointed.
“Why is this here?”
It was none other than a Kikid Cream container. And it was a container that had come out about 10 years ago. Eleanor slowly lifted the container.
It was light, indicating it was used up. The container showed signs of age. Some of the text was erased and not clearly visible, but the words ‘Not for Sale’ were distinct.
A used Kikid Cream container. About 15 years old.
It was hidden away as if it were something precious. Eleanor suddenly remembered giving Kikid Cream to a boy when she was young. She always carried Kikid Cream with her and gave it to that boy.
‘No way.’
That boy couldn’t be her husband. The boy back then was so grubby. Come to think of it, he was so grubby she couldn’t remember what he looked like. She only remembered that his face was smudged with a lot of dark dirt.
No, perhaps his eyes were a very bright blue. His hair was as black as burnt charcoal.
And then Eleanor thought of Dreid’s face. Blue eyes, black hair.
‘Could it be…….’
【 Past 】
Eleanor lived close to the capital at the time and lived quite a wealthy life. The Ness family was famous enough that people around would say, ‘Ah, the one with the magnificent fountain?’
Despite being such a renowned family, Eleanor’s mother was actively developing and selling Kikid Cream at the time. That endeavor did not bring much profit to the family; rather, it made them precarious. Nevertheless, Eleanor’s mother always said.
Always carry Kikid Cream and help those in need.
Every time she said that, Eleanor’s mother would place a sack of Kikid Cream in Eleanor’s room. Each time, Eleanor would express mild annoyance.
“Mother, you need to think carefully about helping people. If you help without knowing anything, they might think you’re pitying them and dislike you.”
“Eleanor, how many times have I told you that it’s about the attitude of the helper? To not have that attitude, you must have a kind heart.”
Eleanor’s mother always said it was a matter of attitude. But Eleanor found it difficult to change that attitude. It was something she always heard, but today, the words seemed to strike a chord.
“…What can I do? This is just my personality.”
As Eleanor muttered to herself, her mother let out a faint sigh. She walked over to the bed where Eleanor was sitting and sat beside her.
“Still, always carry this Kikid Cream with you.”
Eleanor’s mother handed Eleanor the Kikid Cream container. Eleanor took the container, examined it from side to side, and saw that it was marked ‘Not for Sale.’
“What if they dislike it because it’s not for sale?”
“No one will scrutinize something like that in detail.”
Eleanor sighed. Her mother was always excessively zealous about helping others. She paid particular attention to injured people.
The reason Eleanor’s mother developed Kikid Cream was because of her husband. Eleanor’s father, who suddenly collapsed and was severely injured at the mansion, bled too much and died. At the time, a hemostatic agent was applied, but his condition worsened due to side effects from certain ingredients, and he passed away.
After her husband’s death, her mother developed a comprehensive cream medicine that was good for stopping bleeding, as well as for muscle pain and bruises. It was made entirely from natural ingredients. That was Kikid Cream.
However, people’s reactions were lukewarm. Because there were already existing medicines, it was difficult to achieve good results in the market. Kikid Cream added hemostatic ingredients and used natural materials, but the fact that it was a comprehensive cream was the problem. People preferred existing single-ingredient medicines, believing they were more effective.
The market was structured that way from the start, so even with promotion, the effect was minimal.
Even when Eleanor always said her mother was too greedy, her mother said that’s how more people would use it. Eleanor couldn’t break her mother’s stubbornness. Every day, her mother said the same thing.
“Eleanor, always have a righteous heart. And behave courteously.”
Eleanor heard such words hundreds of times but couldn’t easily live according to her mother’s words. It was Eleanor’s nature. But she always answered well.
“Yes.”
Her mother seemed satisfied with the answer and left the room. A moment later, a maid knocked on the door. It was probably about a dress.
“Lady Eleanor, may I come in?”
“Come in.”
The maid had a bright expression.
“Lady Eleanor, the dress you ordered is complete. So today, I……”
“No, I’ll go with you.”
“Are you alright? Today is market day, so it seems like it will be very crowded.”
“It’s fine, I want to see the dress quickly, and I need to go out for the first time in a while.”
Her mother’s constant nagging always made her feel strangely uneasy. Eleanor wanted to shake off this feeling quickly.
Eleanor slowly turned her head. Next to the bed was a large sack. It was a sack full of Kikid Cream containers. Her mother was always the same.
Eleanor shook her head and calmly got up from the bed. The quick-witted maid quickly said.
“Then I’ll have the carriage prepared right away. Shall I help you put on the dress?”
“No, preparing the carriage will take longer. You go down and prepare the carriage.”
“Yes.”
The maid quickly left the room. Eleanor opened her closet and put on a light dress for going out. It was a dress easy to put on by herself. Looking in the mirror from various angles, she imagined the dress she would try on this time.
It would surely be a dress she would be satisfied with.
Eleanor smiled unconsciously and looked around. Then she saw the Kikid Cream containers her mother had left behind.
‘…I suppose I should take them.’
She had heard it so many times it was tiresome, and it felt wrong not to take them, so Eleanor reluctantly packed the Kikid Cream. She didn’t know if people in need would like such help.
