My Gorgeous Neighbor Is Cooking Every Day - Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Xia Xingye carefully observed Jiang Yingyue’s expression and softly asked: “You don’t really like these things, do you?”
Jiang Yingyue gave a wry smile and nodded: “Would anyone like them?”
Xia Xingye blinked. While no one liked scheming, she could sense Jiang Yingyue’s particular aversion to it.
No wonder Jiang Yingyue was unwilling to try other jobs; perhaps her current work required less worrying about people.
Despite this, Xia Xingye still hoped Jiang Yingyue could switch to a slightly safer job.
“Are you a Taoist?” Xia Xingye hesitated repeatedly before finally asking.
“Didn’t I mention it?” Jiang Yingyue seemed surprised.
Xia Xingye widened her eyes: “Of course, you didn’t! Are you willing to tell me now?”
“If you want to know, I will naturally tell you.”
The question that had plagued Xia Xingye for so long was answered by Jiang Yingyue so casually. Xia Xingye’s face flushed, and it took her a while to squeeze out: “I should have just asked you directly earlier.”
Jiang Yingyue explained helplessly: “I’m not formally a Taoist, I just learned some related things.”
Xia Xingye’s eyes lit up: “Then since you’re not a formal Taoist, does that mean you don’t have to do those dangerous things?”
“Dangerous?” Jiang Yingyue was puzzled, “It’s not dangerous.”
“How can it not be dangerous?” Xia Xingye suspected Jiang Yingyue was just trying to reassure her, “Don’t those ghosts attack people?”
“Only some will attack; most remain in the human world due to unfulfilled desires.”
Xia Xingye remained skeptical: “If it’s really not dangerous, why don’t you take me to see?”
“It’s not that I won’t take you, it’s that I can’t.” Jiang Yingyue was about to continue explaining when the car stopped.
Jiang Yingyue got out of the car, leaned slightly, and said to Xia Xingye inside: “I’ll tell you next time.”
Xia Xingye sighed and followed her out of the car.
Bi Yuzhu was already waiting at the entrance. Her house was a large villa, and the entrance was magnificently decorated. Bi Yuzhu warmly greeted them, accompanied by a reluctant child.
“Say hello to the guests,” Bi Yuzhu gently reminded him.
The child looked at Xia Xingye, then at Jiang Yingyue, and finally said: “Welcome.”
Xia Xingye couldn’t help but laugh; his tone was exactly as if they were customers coming to spend money. She said to the child: “Your mother said you are a good boy.”
Hearing this, the child’s face instantly flushed, and he stammered: “I-I’ve always been a good boy.”
When praised by his mother or the nanny, he always felt they were just humoring him, but compliments from outsiders felt especially genuine. The more he thought about it, the more embarrassed he felt, and he buried his face behind Bi Yuzhu.
Bi Yuzhu led them into the courtyard and explained: “Is barbecue alright for tonight?”
As guests, they shouldn’t be picky. Xia Xingye and Jiang Yingyue both said it was fine.
Xia Xingye looked around and only saw a few servants, so she asked: “Is your husband not coming?”
“He has to work overtime tonight,” Bi Yuzhu sounded a little disappointed, “He was supposed to have the night off, but he had to come back this afternoon because of my situation, and now he’s still dealing with work.”
After a brief chat, Bi Yuzhu invited them to sit down. She originally wanted to grill some food herself, but in less than two minutes, she burned the chives, and the courtyard was instantly filled with a burnt smell.
Bi Yuzhu’s cheeks were slightly red, and she handed the grilling over to the servant.
Xia Xingye kept in mind that Jiang Yingyue said they would know who put the spell on Bi Yuzhu once they got to her house, but besides Bi Yuzhu, her son, and a few servants, there was no one else here.
Xia Xingye looked at Jiang Yingyue in confusion, asking with her eyes: Didn’t you say we would see the person who put the spell on her once we arrived?
Jiang Yingyue subtly glanced to the side. Xia Xingye followed her gaze and saw the child playing with water alone nearby.
Xia Xingye was stunned for a while before realizing: “Are you suggesting… he’s the one who put the spell on her?”
Jiang Yingyue nodded helplessly: “He did it, but none of them know.”
It was no exaggeration to call this child a brat; he was always causing a ruckus.
He accidentally brought the Gu back, and it ended up on Bi Yuzhu.
He was scolded this afternoon and only now was he slightly better behaved.
If not for that, Xia Xingye’s few words wouldn’t have been enough to change him so easily.
“Are there any lasting effects?” Xia Xingye asked, a little worried.
“It was discovered in time, no lasting effects.”
Xia Xingye sighed in relief: “It’s a good thing she cares about her own health. You should learn from her and pay more attention to your body.”
Jiang Yingyue looked at her silently.
Xia Xingye felt a bit self-conscious under her gaze: “What’s wrong? Am I wrong?”
Jiang Yingyue sighed: “She didn’t discover it herself; her husband did.”
Xia Xingye: “…”
She had been overthinking. Although Bi Yuzhu was a good dancer, her focus was probably solely on dancing, making her somewhat oblivious to other matters.
In this regard, she was somewhat similar to Jiang Yingyue, who often went incommunicado for long periods when working.
Thinking of this, Xia Xingye looked at Jiang Yingyue’s wrist and saw that she was still wearing the “Little Genius” watch she had given her, and her eyes instantly curved into crescent moons.
She took Jiang Yingyue’s hand: “Don’t worry. Even if you don’t care about your health, I will remind you.”
Jiang Yingyue initially wanted to refuse. She could take care of herself and didn’t need Xia Xingye’s extra concern, but seeing Xia Xingye’s sparkling eyes, the words on her lips were swallowed back.
Since Xia Xingye was happy, let her be.
Halfway through the barbecue, a car noise suddenly came from the entrance.
A car stopped, and a man walked in. Bi Yuzhu greeted him with a surprised look: “Didn’t you say you couldn’t make it back tonight?”
The man smiled: “I promised to be with you. How could I not come back?”
The couple was being lovey-dovey at the entrance. Xia Xingye felt her teeth ache from the sweetness, but the child playing with water nearby was completely unfazed, clearly accustomed to his parents’ affection.
After the barbecue, Bi Yuzhu specifically had the driver take them back. When they arrived at the doorstep, Xia Xingye smelled the barbecue smoke on her clothes. Looking at Jiang Yingyue opening the door, she suddenly asked: “Can I come over to your place?”
Jiang Yingyue paused in opening the door: “What’s wrong with your place?”
“Nothing,” Xia Xingye answered honestly, “I just don’t want to be alone.”
Without even asking for the reason, Jiang Yingyue nodded and agreed: “Come whenever you want.”
Xia Xingye excitedly replied “See you in a bit” and rushed home to take a shower.
After showering, Xia Xingye smelled herself again. Although she was far from the grill, she still smelled of barbecue.
She turned around and went back into the bathroom. Although the smell wasn’t strong, it would be rude to go to Jiang Yingyue’s house like this, completely unaware that showing up at someone’s house in the middle of the night was itself quite impolite.
After making sure she smelled fresh and clean, Xia Xingye went to knock on Jiang Yingyue’s door in her pajamas.
Jiang Yingyue opened the door quickly. Seeing Xia Xingye in her bath robe, she seemed to have expected it and wasn’t surprised at all.
After opening the door and letting Xia Xingye in, Jiang Yingyue looked at her helplessly: “Why are you wearing that to come over?”
Xia Xingye smiled: “I’ll be changing into pajamas anyway.”
If she hadn’t thought it inappropriate, she would have worn the bath robe all the way over.
Jiang Yingyue watched her silently for a moment, making Xia Xingye a little nervous, before finally saying: “Next time, just shower here.”
“Really?” Xia Xingye’s eyes lit up.
“Of course.”
“You said that!” Xia Xingye took out her phone, just to be sure, “Can you say it again? I’ll record it.”
Jiang Yingyue: “…”
