Chapter 12: “Do Not Move, Do You Understand?”
The sun set that day at 6:50 PM. After everyone caught fish, they cleaned and grilled them on the spot, along with some meat.
They began their journey back after 5:00 PM. The second uncle and aunt stayed behind to arrange for the packing and cleaning. Aside from Bo Jingxian, who was knocked down by the dog and cried out of spite and a very sore backside, the family gathering ended successfully.
After Bo Yu finished washing up, she dragged her suitcase to the trunk to retrieve the items she had specifically bought during her shopping trip. Back in her room, she placed two high-temperature resistant, fireproof insulation boards in the bathroom and set a gold ingot brazier on top of them.
She opened the bathroom window and turned on the exhaust fan, placing a fire extinguisher nearby just in case, with a handheld showerhead ready at her side. On a piece of yellow paper, she wrote the name “Xie Yinwan (Recipient)” and the date, then knelt before the brazier to burn offerings for her.
During their last meeting, she had noticed she forgot to burn a hair ribbon for Xie Yinwan. The ghost wore her long hair half-up and half-down; her ink-black tresses fell like silk, looking elegant and graceful as she drifted. Such beautiful hair shouldn’t be held by an old ribbon; she deserved something that matched her beauty. So, while shopping today, Bo Yu had specifically bought two new ribbons.
Bo Yu had chosen one white ribbon and one light bamboo-green one to match the previous outfits. She used alcohol blocks to help the fire and burned them one by one. These were small items that didn’t require a trip to the funeral parlor; if Xie Yinwan needed small things in the future, Bo Yu could burn them at any time. For the safety of her family, even when burning small items, she ensured all safety precautions were in place.
Once the two ribbons were reduced to ash, Bo Yu used water to soak the remains, poured them down the bathroom drain, and meticulously cleaned the brazier and the boards. After wiping them dry, she put the brazier in the bedroom cabinet and returned to the bathroom to move the insulation boards.
The boards were somewhat heavy, and Bo Yu couldn’t move them on her first try.
Perhaps losing her strength from the recent labor, Bo Yu held her breath slightly, exerted effort, and bent down for a second attempt.
But this time, before her fingertips could slide under the board, the board floated up on its own.
Bo Yu froze, looking up in pleasant surprise to see Xie Yinwan floating in the air!
Xie Yinwan was wearing the light bamboo-green Hanfu. Her wide sleeves drifted like willow leaves, looking like an immortal stepping out of a painting of a bamboo forest.
“Immortal, you’ve come.”
Bo Yu watched Xie Yinwan’s silhouette appear with delight. Seeing her in this new outfit confirmed that Xie Yinwan liked the clothes—not just the white ones, but the bamboo-green ones as well.
“Where does this go?” Xie Yinwan arched an eyebrow.
Bo Yu hurriedly said, “In that open cabinet in the bedroom. Thank you, Immortal.”
As soon as she spoke, the two heavy boards stacked themselves together and drifted toward the bedroom as light as paper.
So powerful, Bo Yu thought. The workers at moving companies would certainly want this superpower.
Xie Yinwan turned and floated toward the bedroom. Bo Yu followed, looking up at her graceful back. Tied in Xie Yinwan’s waterfall of smooth black hair was the very bamboo-green ribbon she had just burned. Her hair cascaded down to her waist, and the green ribbon hung past her shoulder blades; both hair and ribbon fluttered beautifully as she moved, like an elegant celestial being descended to earth.
Bo Yu secretly curled the corners of her mouth into a smile.
Once the boards flew into the cabinet, Bo Yu stepped forward and diligently shut the cabinet doors.
“Thank you, Immortal, for helping me move things.”
“A mere flick of a sleeve, not worth mentioning.”
Xie Yinwan stood in the air with her feet together and beckoned the doll. The doll obediently flew into her hands.
Bo Yu thought that Xie Yinwan really loved her doll, and she waited for the ghost to take the doll to sit on the table she had cleaned so thoroughly.
Xie Yinwan held the doll in her left hand and glanced at the clean tabletop. Instead of sitting there, she flicked her right sleeve, sweeping the pillows and quilt from Bo Yu’s bed onto the floor.
Bo Yu was dumbfounded: “…”
Is this Immortal only happy when she’s knocking things over?
Xie Yinwan sat down gracefully—not on the sewing table, but on Bo Yu’s bed. She leaned against the headboard, ankles crossed casually on the mattress, her posture relaxed, elegant, and leisurely.
Since Xiexie had played all day, Bo Yu felt the doll was tired, so she had changed her into a set of short-sleeved pajama separates, braided her hair into two pigtails, and put on frame glasses—an adorable look ready for sleep.
“She is very cute. How old is she?”
“Five. I made her after my college entrance exams.”
“What are college entrance exams?”
“…”
Bo Yu patiently explained to the “illiterate” ghost: “The exams are similar to the imperial examinations or recommendations, a way to select officials…”
“Sounds exhausting. Forget it, no need to explain.”
“…”
Xie Yinwan tapped the doll’s cheek with her finger. As if talking to herself, she casually and subtly took credit: “You weren’t sprayed with water today. Aren’t you going to thank this Immortal?”
Bo Yu’s face immediately filled with surprise and joy, as if she truly had an immortal patron. She walked to the bedside with a smile. “It really was you who helped me? Thank you. You truly are a good Immortal.”
Xie Yinwan looked down at the doll named “Xiexie,” her lips curving slightly. “Don’t mention it. Consider it a return gift for the clothes you sent.”
Bo Yu felt even more delighted. This ghost was not only helpful but also understood the etiquette of reciprocity—a good ghost indeed.
“Then I should say thank you to you again. Thank you.” Bo Yu always maintained politeness with people, and naturally, she should do the same with ghosts.
Xie Yinwan shook the doll’s hand. “Mhm.”
Her mood lightened, and Bo Yu couldn’t help but ask about the doubts in her heart. If Bo Jingxian’s mention of fishing on Friday was due to Xie Yinwan’s foresight, then how did she control the water gun today? Could Xie Yinwan travel during the day and see what was happening? Was she truly a deity? Yet, the ghostly aura every time she appeared was far too heavy; she really didn’t seem like an immortal.
Bo Yu had many questions and wanted to know what else Xie Yinwan could do, but she didn’t dare ask. The terror of being strangled was still fresh.
“What are you thinking about?” Xie Yinwan lifted her gaze indifferently.
“I was thinking,” Bo Yu still didn’t dare ask the real questions, opting instead for a safe comment, “Immortal, besides taking the doll out to collect energy, is there anything else you need me to do?”
Xie Yinwan looked thoughtful.
“Come here and lie down.”
“?”
“Hmm? Not obedient? You want to die?”
“I’ll listen, I’ll listen.”
Unsure of the reason, Bo Yu climbed onto the bed and lay down perfectly straight. With the quilt and pillows on the floor, she didn’t dare pick them up. It felt very strange, as if she were a corpse.
After lying there for a while, she didn’t hear any further instructions. Lying there, she began to feel a bit sleepy.
Suddenly, Xie Yinwan moved. She flipped over and floated directly above Bo Yu’s body, wearing a ghostly smile as she admired Bo Yu’s suddenly wide eyes.
Xie Yinwan let out a low, soft chuckle. Then, her body descended, lying completely on top of Bo Yu, burying her face in the crook of Bo Yu’s neck.
Bo Yu’s entire body tensed instantly. Her toes pointed, her palms pressed hard against the mattress, and she was forced to tilt her head back.
“You are very fragrant. Let me smell you for a while,” Xie Yinwan’s voice was teasing and light, filled with a feminine, lingering laugh. “Do not move, do you understand?”
Bo Yu swallowed hard, not daring to refuse. She whispered stiffly, “I understand. I won’t move.”
As she spoke, Bo Yu felt the sensation of soft feathers brushing or cold breath puffing against her neck. Xie Yinwan’s buried face moved slowly from the left side of Bo Yu’s neck to the right, sniffing back and forth.
The intermittent sensations of itching or numbness began to spread uncontrollably from Bo Yu’s neck. Like silver snakes slithering, it reached her limbs until even her blood felt itchy and tingly, causing her breathing to grow rapid.
Bo Yu wanted to say something, but didn’t dare. She wanted to stop it, but lacked the courage.
Gradually, Xie Yinwan’s face moved upward, brushing against Bo Yu’s ear. The ghostly chill made Bo Yu’s whole body go numb and weak. The uncomfortable, tingling sensation exploded from her ear and traveled down her neck and shoulders, causing Bo Yu to curl her toes.
Next, Xie Yinwan’s face brushed against Bo Yu’s cheek. Bo Yu immediately tightened her numb body, holding her breath, not daring to exhale.
Slowly, Xie Yinwan turned her head, her nose moving close to Bo Yu’s tightly closed lips, as if she were smelling the scent of her mouth.
“So fragrant,” Xie Yinwan suddenly looked up, asking either intentionally or out of genuine curiosity, “Are other humans as fragrant as you?”
Bo Yu snapped into clarity. Her eyes widened, and her breathing hitched.
In that moment, she realized with a jolt that Xie Yinwan could go smell anyone else, could protect anyone else—she wasn’t the only one.
