Chapter 11: Could She Really Be An Immortal?
The medicine Jin Xuan prescribed for Bo Yu was a five-day course, and this morning was the final dose. Once again, the bitterness brought reflexive tears to her eyes, but she was relieved she finally didn’t have to drink it anymore.
After the rest of the family left for work in the morning, Bo Yu took Xiexie and the dog out to dig and re-bury the talismans, regretting that she had ever bothered to dig them up in the first place.
Over the next two nights, Xie Yinwan did not appear.
Bo Yu wasn’t as nervous as the first time the ghost missed a night. First, she knew Xie Yinwan liked her scent and had demanded she avoid intimacy with others; second, even though Xie Yinwan hadn’t appeared, she seemed to know exactly what Bo Yu had been doing. This indicated that the ghost was keeping an eye on her.
So, Xie Yinwan would surely return. Bo Yu simply carried on with her daily life.
On Sunday morning, a persistent Bo Jingxian brought up the fishing trip again. This time she was more thorough, trying to persuade the whole family to go. “Grandma, the reservoir I went to the other day is managed by my friend’s father. It’s kept very clean, no industrial pollution, the water is crystal clear, and there are so many kinds of fish. Let’s all go as a family! Nan Yan isn’t here, so we can go before she gets back.”
“Nan Yan” referred to Sheng Nan Yan, Bo Qin’s third and very young wife, who was only three years older than Bo Yu. Bo Jingxian was the daughter of Bo Qin’s second wife and did not get along with her stepmother. During these two months of Bo Jingxian’s summer break, Sheng Nan Yan lived elsewhere to avoid conflict, though they usually lived together.
Bo Jingxian had prepared well, even accounting for Sheng Nan Yan’s absence. She raved about the reservoir and the perfect weather. Grandma Bo, naturally wanting a harmonious family gathering, made the decision: “Then let’s go. It’s Sunday; everyone should relax.”
Once the Old Lady spoke, no one dared object. Bo Yu, the eldest daughter of the first brother Bo Qin, and Bo Mi, the daughter of the second brother Bo Nuo, began the preparations. Since the brothers had no sons, the eldest daughters naturally took charge of the household affairs.
Bo Yu packed Xiexie in her bag and took her along. Her responsibility was to take the cook to buy missing equipment and groceries. Bo Mi took the dog, Hanhan, and headed to the reservoir with the driver and security to set up the tents, chairs, fishing gear, and barbecue.
By the time the rest of the Bo family arrived, the efficient sisters were already settled. They sat side-by-side in rattan chairs under a sunshade, wearing sunglasses and fishing leisurely.
Bo Mi closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “This is so comfortable.”
Bo Yu breathed in the forest oxygen and the cool breeze coming off the water. Glancing at Xiexie sitting in a chair beside her, she smiled. “It really is.”
Surrounded by green mountains and blue water, willow leaves swayed gently. Occasionally, fish circled the hooks, sending ripples across the surface. The dazzling sunlight danced on the clear water, making it sparkle. The air, mixed with the scent of water and plants, was delightful.
Bo Mi opened her eyes and looked at Bo Yu’s doll, laughing. “Your doll looks pretty comfortable too.”
Today, Bo Yu had dressed Xiexie in a dress with a Peter Pan collar and a bucket hat, with a tiny toy phone slung across her body. She sat with her small hands open, and a miniature bucket and fishing rod were set up in front of her, making the cotton doll look as if she were actually fishing.
“She’s the one enjoying it the most,” Bo Yu laughed, patting the top of the doll’s hat.
Honestly, if Xie Yinwan hadn’t demanded it, she might not have brought Xiexie today. Family outings were noisy, and she didn’t want the doll to be disturbed. But since Xie Yinwan told her to bring the doll to “collect energy,” she complied. To her surprise, having the doll there made her feel better. Perhaps it was just her own mood, but Xiexie’s eyes seemed brighter than usual.
Bo Mi looked back at her dog, who was lying quietly under a tent behind them, lacking his usual energy. He hadn’t even splashed in the water. She called out, “Hanhan, come get some meat!”
Hanhan stood up instantly, tongue out and tail wagging, looking excitedly at his owner. But as his gaze drifted to the chair holding the doll, he immediately deflated and flopped back down.
Bo Mi: “?” What was wrong with him? He was fine before they left. Was he “faking it” again like the vet said?
Just as Bo Mi was about to put down her rod to check on him, Hanhan suddenly stood up as if he had received a signal. He ran over, circled the two sisters and the doll three times, then ran back under the tent to rummage through their things.
Bo Yu: “…?”
Finally, Hanhan found a hand fan. He gripped it in his mouth and ran toward Bo Yu, wagging his tail and looking pleasingly at the doll beside her.
The dog was doing well. Xie Yinwan gave him a rare look of approval: Good dog.
Hanhan immediately wagged his tail harder.
Bo Yu took the fan in confusion, then suddenly smiled. She actually did feel a bit hot; beads of sweat had formed on her nose. She fanned herself and patted Hanhan’s head. “You’re so smart! Thank you. How did you know I was sweating?”
Hanhan tilted his head and grinned at Bo Yu, then at the doll. Uncertain who had actually praised him, he suddenly spun in circles with joy before running off to play in the water.
Bo Mi looked on blankly. “…Has my Hanhan developed a crush on your doll?”
Xie Yinwan: “?”
Bo Yu: “…” That’s a bit of a species barrier.
Bo Yu: “Sis, don’t talk nonsense.”
Bo Mi laughed. “I’m just joking.” Xie Yinwan glared at Bo Mi several times.
When the rest of the family arrived, Bo Jingxian brought a friend named Gan Lina, introducing her by saying that Lina’s father was in charge of this reservoir. The Bo family, especially the Second Aunt, welcomed them warmly.
The two young girls began playing with water guns. Since it was a holiday, Grandma didn’t scold Bo Jingxian for her playfulness and encouraged her sons and daughters-in-law to fish.
“Sister Xian, won’t your dad and grandma be mad?” Gan Lina whispered.
Among the wealthy second-generation kids, Bo Jingxian was the biggest spender and had recently opened a bar; people tended to revolve around her.
Bo Jingxian pumped her water gun vigorously. “Let them be mad. I have to let out some of this pent-up anger today.” She still remembered that “shitty Taoist” splashing water on her, and she blamed it all on Bo Yu! She had to get even.
Giggling, the two girls moved behind Bo Yu and Bo Mi. Bo Jingxian was already a bit wet from the play. She feigned excitement and shouted, “Big Sis, Second Sis! Come play with us, it’s fun!”
As she shouted, she aimed the water gun at the back of Bo Yu’s head and pulled the trigger.
Bo Yu and Bo Mi turned around, only to see that Bo Jingxian’s water gun was a dud. Not a single drop came out.
Bo Jingxian: “?” She frantically pumped and pressed the trigger, but nothing happened, as if the gun were being controlled by something.
Bo Mi: “?”
Bo Yu: “?”
Xie Yinwan said coldly: Stupid dog, go knock her over.
The next second, Hanhan—following the command—charged straight into Bo Jingxian. She was knocked to the ground, screaming for her father. Hanhan snatched the water gun from her hand and trotted back to the doll.
Xie Yinwan praised him: Good dog. Give it to the person beside me.
It was as if Hanhan and the doll had shared a conversation. Obediently, the dog dropped the water gun in front of Bo Yu. She laughed, put down her rod, and tested the gun. It worked perfectly, spraying water without any trouble.
Bo Yu raised her eyebrows in slight surprise. This couldn’t be the work of the Immortal, could it? Is she really a deity?
Ignoring Bo Jingxian’s crying and the family’s fussing behind her, Bo Yu smiled, picked up Xiexie, and looked up at the sky.
The day was clear, the breeze was gentle, and a few marshmallow-like clouds drifted across the bright blue sky, soft and peaceful.
