Chapter 60: Epilogue — I’ll Go Wherever You Go
After getting back together, there were naturally many practical issues to resolve—the most pressing being whether Cheng Yi could truly promise her a long life together.
“You don’t need to worry,” Cheng Yi said softly, holding her hand. “As long as I take good care of my health and don’t do anything reckless, my heart shouldn’t give me too much trouble.”
After all, why else would she have paid such a heavy price on the operating table back in university if not to secure a future?
Despite Cheng Yi’s reassurances, Meng Qingwu couldn’t rest easy. She used her connections to reach out to the world-renowned cardiac surgeon, Professor Darren. After multiple thorough examinations, the results were, fortunately, consistent with what Cheng Yi had told her.
“See? I told you it was true.” Cheng Yi trailed behind her, sounding a bit pained. Why didn’t Qingwu believe her?
Meng Qingwu shot her a sharp look and focused on the doctor’s long list of precautions. The takeaway was singular: if Cheng Yi didn’t take care of herself and the condition worsened, a heart transplant would be the only option—and a transplant wasn’t something money alone could buy.
“You listen to me! Delegate your work to others; don’t be stupid enough to take everything on yourself!” On the way home, she continued her lecture. With the way Cheng Yi buried herself in work, how many hearts did she think she had to burn through?
“But…” Cheng Yi tried to protest.
“Don’t think that just because we’re married, you’ve got me trapped,” Meng Qingwu’s expression turned cold the moment she saw resistance. “If you live a short life, I won’t mind finding a few other people to keep me company.”
Cheng Yi: “…”
“Qingwu~” she called out softly, tugging at Meng Qingwu’s sleeve.
Meng Qingwu remained unmoved. “I won’t interfere with your career, but I have one requirement: moderation! I’ve told you the consequences; the choice is yours.”
Cheng Yi lowered her head. “I’ll set more alarms during work then.” A reminder to rest every once in a while—that should work, right?
Hearing this, Meng Qingwu’s expression softened. She reached out and grasped Cheng Yi’s hand, holding it tight.
…
When they returned home, they were summoned by a phone call from Meng Shuyu. Upon seeing them, Meng Shuyu first checked on Cheng Yi’s health before saying, somewhat gloomily, “Your Auntie is angry. How am I supposed to coax her?”
The newly arrived Meng Qingwu and Cheng Yi: “…”
She’s your partner. Shouldn’t you be the one who knows best?
“What happened?” Meng Qingwu asked. She was curious; she had never seen Lan Xining actually get angry with Ms. Meng since they got together.
Meng Shuyu’s expression soured further. “The day before yesterday, she said she wanted to get married. I said there was no rush… and then she got angry.” As she spoke, she glanced at the couple sitting across from her. If it weren’t for their wedding, Lan Xining probably wouldn’t have even thought of it.
Meng Qingwu: “…”
Beside her, Cheng Yi stole a glance at Meng Qingwu. Like mother, like daughter—their attitudes toward marriage were identical. Back then, Cheng Yi had been the one desperate to wed, while Qingwu hadn’t been in any hurry at all.
Meng Qingwu realized this herself, and the feeling of irony intensified when she felt Cheng Yi’s gaze on her. She sighed and spoke to Ms. Meng earnestly: “Mom, do you just… not plan on marrying her at all?”
Meng Shuyu: “…” She hit the nail on the head.
Seeing her mother’s expression, Meng Qingwu shook her head with a smile. “Why not?”
The Lan family already knew about them. Although they didn’t fully approve—especially Lan Xining’s father, Lan Shantu, who looked like he was about to turn blue from rage—they couldn’t do anything to stop Lan Xining, so they let them be.
Meng Shuyu looked embarrassed. “I’m in my fifties. What does it look like for me to get married now?” Especially when the partner was her ex-husband’s sister. She couldn’t get past that internal hurdle.
“Who says you can’t marry in your fifties?” Meng Qingwu countered. “How else do ‘sunset romances’ happen?”
Meng Shuyu: “…” How is that the same?
“Mom,” Meng Qingwu’s voice turned serious. “Think about it. Auntie chased you for over twenty years. She’s chased long enough and waited long enough. Now that you’re finally together, wanting to marry you is only natural.”
“And do you really have the heart to let her stay by your side forever without a proper title?” After all those years of waiting, to still have no official status… wouldn’t that be heartbreaking?
Meng Shuyu froze. Following Meng Qingwu’s words, she thought back to the decades Lan Xining had spent following her. Her heart tightened with a sudden, spreading ache.
“Mom, honestly, whether you’re married or not doesn’t change much. If Auntie wants it, just give it to her.” For people in their position, marriage was just a piece of paper; it wouldn’t change their daily lives significantly.
Meng Shuyu frowned. “But if I marry your aunt, what will people say about me?” Marrying a brother and then a sister.
Meng Qingwu was silent for a moment before saying easily, “What can they say? And since when did you care about what people think? Plenty of people in the business world call you a ‘madwoman.’ Did you ever care? Besides, after all these years, how many people even remember your connection to my father?”
The two families had very little contact. Even she, the biological daughter, wasn’t close to her father. Who would bother digging into someone else’s past?
…
After Meng Qingwu and Cheng Yi left, Meng Shuyu sat alone and thought for a long time. Finally, she got into her car and drove to the Lan residence.
She arrived at the Lan house, and it was clear she wasn’t welcome. Old Man Lan’s face looked sour enough to pickle vegetables. Although Meng Shuyu didn’t particularly like them either, they were Lan Xining’s family. She kept her face neutral, greeted them briefly, and went straight upstairs to find Lan Xining.
“Dad!” Lan Shantu called out.
“Shut up!” Old Man Lan glared at him. If he hadn’t been so useless, they wouldn’t have divorced. And if they hadn’t divorced, Lan Xining wouldn’t be in this mess!
Lan Shantu choked on his words. He knew the old man favored Lan Xining, but he hadn’t realized it went this far. Lan Xining liked women and was tangled up with Meng Shuyu, yet the old man said nothing!
Meng Shuyu ignored the drama downstairs. She reached Lan Xining’s door and knocked. “Xining.”
No sound from inside.
Meng Shuyu sighed softly. “It was my fault before. Open the door. Let’s talk, okay?”
The door opened, revealing Lan Xining’s stoic face.
Meng Shuyu smiled gently, stepped inside, and closed the door. She looked at the woman before her, then reached out to pull her into a hug. “I was being stubborn. I’m sorry.”
“Do you still want to marry me?”
Tucked into Meng Shuyu’s embrace, Lan Xining’s nose instantly turned sour. She wrapped her arms back around the woman, her voice muffled: “Are you being sincere?”
Meng Shuyu nuzzled against her cheek. “Of course I am. I want to make the wedding grand.” She wanted to make sure this woman’s only wedding was unforgettable.
Lan Xining felt like crying even more. She buried her head in Shuyu’s neck so she couldn’t see her face. Her heart was a swirl of bitterness, sweetness, and intense joy. This Meng Shuyu made her feel like all those years of chasing hadn’t been in vain.
“You said it—the wedding has to be big.”
“Mhm, I said it.”
“And I want a honeymoon trip.”
“Okay. I’ll go wherever you want to go.”
“And you have to be very good to me!”
Meng Shuyu let out a soft laugh and kissed her cheek. “I will always be good to you.”
They had a long time ahead of them. She would show her that she wasn’t just saying words.
