My Ex Told Me She’s Still In Love With Me - chapter 53
Chapter 53: Fire Up
On the other side, Cheng Yi assisted Qi Yu to the restroom. After helping her into a cubicle, she waited outside, her heart filled with anxiety.
Will Meng Qingwu misunderstand seeing us like this?
She pulled out her phone and found Meng Qingwu’s chat window. Their last conversation was over a month ago. She froze for a moment.
…
“Ms. Meng, your lover seems to be…” Dai Shuyu didn’t finish her sentence, but her expression was teasing. Based on Meng Qingwu’s reaction just now, did she really treat the other person as just a lover?
Meng Qingwu lowered her eyes, swirling the wine in her glass, remaining silent.
Ding—
She checked her phone and saw a message from Cheng Yi.
[Cheng Yi]: Qingwu, don’t misunderstand. Her foot is injured, I was just helping her.
Seeing this explanation confirmed her previous suspicion. She simply raised an eyebrow and didn’t reply.
Back in the restroom, after waiting a long time with no response, Cheng Yi’s gaze lowered, looking somewhat dejected.
“Cheng Yi, I’m done,” Qi Yu called out from the stall.
Cheng Yi put away her phone and pushed open the cubicle door to help her out.
“You—” Cheng Yi’s brow furrowed tightly. She raised her hand to pull her away.
Qi Yu’s arms were firmly hooked around Cheng Yi’s neck, her forehead resting against Cheng Yi’s collarbone in a very dependent posture.
“Cheng Yi,” Qi Yu murmured softly, “I really like you.”
Cheng Yi’s frown deepened. “Ms. Qi, this is our first time meeting.”
Qi Yu shook her head and grumbled in a small voice, “It’s not the first time.”
Cheng Yi didn’t understand what she meant. Not the first time? Were there others? Why don’t I have any memory of it?
However, now was not the time to dwell on that. She said in a heavy tone, “Ms. Qi, please let go. It wouldn’t be good if people misunderstood.”
The restroom was deathly quiet; there was no one else there, which emboldened Qi Yu. She shook her head and tightened her grip.
Cheng Yi felt a surge of panic. She disliked this kind of ulterior physical contact from anyone other than Meng Qingwu. Her voice turned completely cold. “I appreciate you saving me, but that doesn’t mean I will be boundlessly tolerant of you.”
As she spoke, she forcefully pried the hands away from her neck, ignoring the girl’s reddening eyes.
“Cheng Yi!” the girl cried out with a sob. “What’s wrong with me? Why won’t you look at me?”
Cheng Yi pursed her lips, continuing to pull her hands away decisively. Being delicate and injured, Qi Yu was no match for Cheng Yi; her hands were soon pried off.
In a fit of desperation, Qi Yu leaned in and bit Cheng Yi’s collarbone.
“Sss—” Cheng Yi let out a cry of pain.
At that moment, there was a sound at the restroom door. She looked up to see Meng Qingwu standing there in her high heels like a proud queen, looking at the two of them with cold eyes.
Cheng Yi froze. She hadn’t expected Meng Qingwu to appear so suddenly, especially to witness this scene. Panic flooded her. Afraid of a misunderstanding, she forcefully pushed away the stunned Qi Yu and took two quick steps toward Meng Qingwu.
“Ah—”
A cry of pain came from behind her. Cheng Yi looked back to see Qi Yu unable to stand. Her gaze darkened, but in the end, she went back to Qi Yu’s side to help her up.
She was injured because of me. Even if she just did that to me, I can’t just leave her.
Meng Qingwu stood by with her arms crossed, watching them. Her gaze first landed on Cheng Yi’s arm supporting the girl, then slowly moved up to Cheng Yi’s collarbone through her half-unbuttoned shirt.
There was a very ambiguous red mark there, currently sporting two fresh teeth marks and a trace of lipstick. Her eyes darkened, and her lips remained pressed thin.
Qi Yu looked up at Meng Qingwu, looking pitiful. After a stalemate of about three seconds, Meng Qingwu’s red lips curled slightly. She said flatly, “Ms. Qi, long time no see.”
Cheng Yi was stunned. They know each other?
Qi Yu bit her lip. Her gaze toward Meng Qingwu was evasive, yet she didn’t back down. Cheng Yi will be mine!
Seeing no reply, Meng Qingwu didn’t press the issue. She looked at Qi Yu’s foot. “Since Ms. Qi is injured, you should go back and rest properly. Why are you running around?”
This time, Qi Yu spoke: “There’s no need for Ms. Meng to worry.”
Meng Qingwu gave a soft chuckle and stopped talking to her. She turned her attention to Cheng Yi, asking with interest, “So this is your blind date for tonight?”
Her attitude seemed a bit ambiguous, almost like a friend’s teasing, making Cheng Yi unsure of her intent.
She nodded. “Arranged by Ms. Yu. It wasn’t my idea.” She used this sentence to tell Meng Qingwu that she didn’t want to be here.
Hearing this, Qi Yu’s face immediately darkened, and her smile became forced.
“Since we’ve run into each other, why don’t we eat together?” Meng Qingwu raised an eyebrow.
Cheng Yi hesitated for a moment, then agreed.
…
After assisting Qi Yu in washing her hands, Cheng Yi stood aside, watching Meng Qingwu walk to the mirror to touch up her makeup with slow, deliberate movements. Already exquisite, the touch-up made her even more radiant. Cheng Yi couldn’t take her eyes off her.
Through the mirror’s reflection, Meng Qingwu saw the look on Cheng Yi’s face. Her red lips curled slightly as she put the lipstick back in her bag. “Let’s go.”
Ever since Meng Qingwu appeared, Qi Yu had become much quieter. Her behavior became restrained and cautious; in the face of Meng Qingwu, she seemed to lack confidence.
The three of them returned to the main hall. They rearranged the seating, and the four people on “blind dates” sat together. On the surface, it was civil, but everyone had their own thoughts.
This scene, however, was exactly what the onlookers wanted to see.
Lan Xining’s eyes lit up. She gripped Meng Shuyu’s hand tightly and whispered excitedly, “The Shura Field has arrived!” Meng Shuyu watched her with an amused, doting smile.
On the other side, Yu Qingshuang watched the scene thoughtfully. Something felt wrong. Why was the blind date she picked so intimidated by Meng Qingwu? That look… it was like a mistress standing before the legal wife, lacking any confidence…
In truth, the “Shura Field” wasn’t that intense yet, mostly because of Dai Shuyu. She didn’t care about Meng Qingwu at all; she was just there to eat “melons” (gossip) from a front-row seat.
As they chatted, Cheng Yi explained what had happened. Learning that Qi Yu was injured while saving Cheng Yi, Meng Qingwu’s expression softened. Cheng Yi, who was constantly monitoring Meng Qingwu’s face, felt a slight sense of relief, though she still felt uncomfortable.
She carefully observed the woman beside Meng Qingwu—Dai Shuyu. She seemed like a gentle, well-bred lady with a smile that felt like a spring breeze. Such a person seemed very well-matched with Meng Qingwu.
Bitterness began to well up in Cheng Yi’s heart. Is Qingwu really planning to cut ties with the past? But if so, why did she feel like Qingwu cared in the restroom? She lowered her eyes and fell into her own thoughts.
“Ms. Cheng, are you not in high spirits today?” Dai Shuyu asked.
Receiving the attention of three people at once, Cheng Yi bit her lip and shook her head. “No. I’m… quite happy to meet you all.”
Meeting you all as a group is what’s making me “happy,” she thought dejectedly.
Meng Qingwu’s brow arched. She looked at Cheng Yi once more before looking away, silently saying a single word in her head: Bullshit. In that moment, she felt she understood Cheng Yi’s inner thoughts. If she were actually happy, her energy wouldn’t be this dim.
Dai Shuyu laughed silently and exchanged a playful, knowing look with Meng Qingwu. Meng Qingwu remained expressionless.
As they continued their casual conversation, Cheng Yi soon realized that the two people across from her were not actually a couple. Especially Dai Shuyu—her eyes kept drifting to a different table nearby, her smile barely suppressed. Following her gaze, Cheng Yi saw a beautiful woman sitting alone, attracting many looks.
A thought crossed Cheng Yi’s mind.
“Ms. Meng, I didn’t expect you to return to the country,” Qi Yu said softly, her gaze toward Meng Qingwu somewhat bitter. She thought that if Qingwu left, she wouldn’t come back, and her connection with Cheng Yi would be severed. But they were still entangled.
Meng Qingwu’s glamorous features relaxed into a brilliant smile. “The most important thing to me is here. How could I not return?”
The answer was ambiguous. Did she mean her family and friends, or did she mean Cheng Yi? Qi Yu’s face dimmed, and she didn’t press further. She regretted coming back so late. If she had known sooner that they had broken up, would the result have been different? But there are no “ifs” in life.
Cheng Yi froze for a moment at Meng Qingwu’s words, but quickly regained her composure. She didn’t think she was the “most important thing” Qingwu referred to.
The meal ended on a somewhat dull note, but Cheng Yi discovered one good thing: there was nothing between Meng Qingwu and Ms. Dai. This lightened her mood considerably.
As everyone prepared to leave, Qi Yu spoke up.
“Ms. Meng, I don’t know what your current relationship with Cheng Yi is, but this time I won’t back down. As long as you aren’t officially together, I have the right to pursue her.”
Her face was determined. She had backed down once before and regretted it for years. This time, she wouldn’t be so foolish!
