Chapter 51: Shura Field (The Scene of Conflict)
Stepping out of the Meng family ancestral home, Meng Qingwu got into her car, feeling as though a fire were raging in her chest. Meanwhile, the culprit who lit this fire was currently staring at her experimental data with a locked brow.
“Are you still not going back, Teacher?” Nie Qiuyu sat down beside her. The originally bright and cheerful young girl now had heavy bags under her eyes, looking like someone who hadn’t rested well for days.
Cheng Yi looked up at her, her brow furrowing instantly. “How did you end up looking like this?”
Perhaps because she had been “punished” by Meng Qingwu for fainting in the lab previously, Cheng Yi had started paying attention to her work intensity and stopped overtaxing herself so much.
“I can’t sleep,” Nie Qiuyu said with her chin in her hands, her face full of bitterness. “My upstairs neighbor… I don’t know what kind of fit they’re throwing late at night. They’re either opening a nightclub or jumping rope. How am I supposed to sleep!”
Hearing this, Cheng Yi shook her head. “Go back, pack some things, and get a hotel room to have a good rest. I’ll reimburse the expenses later.”
Nie Qiuyu’s eyes lit up, her spirit instantly reviving. “Teacher, you’re the best!” She moved to lunged forward for a bear hug.
Cheng Yi anticipated this impulsive move and stood up to retreat. “I’m going back now; you should head back early too.” She didn’t give the girl a chance to say another word, leaving only a slightly thin silhouette behind. Nie Qiuyu froze, pouting and grumbling in dissatisfaction.
…
Cheng Yi packed her things and left the lab. Her mood today was quite poor because Ms. Yu had called her back to the Cheng house at noon.
“Yiyi, how have things been with Qingwu lately?” Ms. Yu put on an air of gentle virtue, patting Cheng Yi’s hand.
When she heard Meng Qingwu’s name, Cheng Yi’s expression dimmed. She shook her head, indicating there was no progress. Lately, she hadn’t dared to seek out Meng Qingwu. Yet, she couldn’t stop missing her. She loved the bright, radiant Meng Qingwu of five years ago, and she loved the glamorous, alluring woman of today. As long as it was Meng Qingwu, she loved her.
But she didn’t know if Meng Qingwu’s anger had subsided. If it hadn’t, would approaching her light the fuse all over again?
Yu Qingshuang observed her expression carefully and spoke hesitantly, “Mom booked a table for you at the Yuyuan Sky Hotel tomorrow night.”
Cheng Yi looked up. “Why a booking all of a sudden?” She racked her brain for a special occasion but couldn’t think of anything.
Yu Qingshuang’s voice turned even softer. “Mom arranged a blind date for you there.”
Cheng Yi: “…” She frowned at Yu Qingshuang. “Mom, are you serious?” Knowing I love Meng Qingwu, yet you’re arranging a blind date?
Yu Qingshuang nodded. “Mom also heard that Qingwu is going on a blind date there tomorrow night, so I simply booked a spot at the same place.”
Cheng Yi: “…”
“Oh, isn’t this what you young people call a ‘Shura Field’? Since it’s going to be a scene anyway, we might as well put everyone together and get the confrontation over with all at once!” Ms. Yu spoke with total conviction, as if this clash would solve everything.
Cheng Yi’s heart twisted in pain, just like her furrowed brow. Hadn’t she said she wouldn’t accept anyone else during this time? Why did she break her word? Or did she think things through and realize she no longer loves me?
Her face turned pale, and she looked at Yu Qingshuang as if seeking help. Impossible… she promised me. How could she go on a date?
“Mom, you’re lying to me, right? You’re lying, aren’t you?” She stared at Ms. Yu, trying to find a trace of a joke on her face.
But how could she? If Ms. Yu didn’t want someone to see through her, she wouldn’t be easily read by her daughter. Seeing the pain in Cheng Yi’s eyes, her heart softened for a moment, but then she thought of how these two kept torturing each other without a breakthrough. She had to force herself to be cold.
“Whether it’s true or not, won’t you know once you go and see for yourself tomorrow?”
Cheng Yi lowered her head, her hands clenched into tight fists on her lap. Her body was tensed to an incredible degree.
Yu Qingshuang sighed and rubbed her daughter’s head. “Even if she isn’t on a date tomorrow, there are plenty of girls who want to be with her. I heard the Wu family’s daughter is pursuing her relentlessly, even going to her company.”
“If things are going to be like this between you two, you might as well let go and start over.”
Yu Qingshuang had to admit she felt this way. While Meng Qingwu suited her tastes and was the person her child loved, these two carried too much baggage. If they couldn’t be together happily, it was better to part and be free.
Cheng Yi remained silent. She wasn’t unaware of others pursuing Meng Qingwu, but she had a strange, firm belief that Meng Qingwu wouldn’t lie to her. She stood up and said stiffly, “I will go. But I believe it wasn’t her own wish to go on a date!” Even if Qingwu decided to cut ties, she would notify her, not go on a date in silence.
…
In the evening, Cheng Yi sat in the car Meng Qingwu had given her. She suddenly wanted to drink. Nighttime always amplified emotions; she wanted alcohol to help her stop thinking. But she realized she didn’t even have a single friend she could call out for a drink. Her history of being bullied had made her solitary. Her only friend, Bi Xinglan, was now gone from her life.
She felt tired. Leaning back in the seat, she smelled the faint perfume she had sprayed earlier—it didn’t make her feel better. She began to doubt herself: Why exactly does Meng Qingwu like me? She wasn’t good with words, didn’t have a likable personality, and had no friends. How did she attract someone like Qingwu?
She touched her own face. Qingwu said it was love at first sight. She must have fallen for this face, right? But besides the face, is there anything else worthy of her continued love? Faces fade eventually.
She agonized over every detail of their time together, trying to find a reason. But in the end, she found nothing. Meng Qingwu was too perfect; she already had everything and needed nothing from others. Why would such a perfect person love someone like her?
Inferiority and sensitivity washed over her like a tide. I shouldn’t be like this! she thought, clutching her hair. I wasn’t like this before!
Is this why Qingwu wanted us to ‘calm down’? Does she see this timid, insecure version of me as useless? She gasped for air, staring blankly at the car roof. How do I get rid of these emotions and return to the version Meng Qingwu once loved?
…
7:00 PM, Yuyuan Sky Restaurant.
Meng Qingwu arrived at the rooftop restaurant in the city center. From here, one could see the entire capital’s night view. Inside, the lighting was intimate and dim.
“Hello, do you have a reservation?” “Table 17.” “Right this way, please.”
As she approached, she noticed a woman with long hair draped over her shoulders. She recognized her immediately as the woman from the first photo on the tablet her mother had shown her. The woman looked even more elegant in person. When she smiled, it was easy to feel at ease.
“Ms. Meng, my name is Dai Shuyu,” the woman smiled.
“Hello, Ms. Dai,” Meng Qingwu nodded. She only knew the woman’s face from the photo; she knew nothing of her name or background. She sat down and immediately scanned the surrounding tables. Unfortunately, to protect privacy, the tables were spaced far apart. The person she was looking for was not there. Was Ms. Meng playing with me?
What she didn’t know was that in a private booth to her front-right, three women were gathered. Two were watching the scene outside with great excitement. Meng Shuyu poured herself a glass of wine, shaking her head at the other two. Lan Xining and Yu Qingshuang were playing the role of gossip-hungry women to the hilt, with Yu Qingshuang completely abandoning her poised “Mrs. Cheng” persona to join Lan Xining’s mischief.
“Didn’t you say seven o’clock? Why isn’t your girl here yet?” Lan Xining whispered, watching Meng Qingwu chat smoothly with the woman opposite her. She had to admit, Qingwu was indeed Meng Shuyu’s daughter—even on a forced date, she was poised and graceful.
“Not just her, even her date hasn’t arrived!” Yu Qingshuang was puzzled. She had left right after seeing Cheng Yi head out. There was no reason for her to be late.
Lan Xining muttered, “You didn’t drop the ball at the critical moment, did you?” Cheng Yi wasn’t here, and the other date wasn’t here either.
“Unlikely. That girl promised me she’d come to play along. She’s a good kid; no reason to stand me up.”
While they waited anxiously for the “Shura Field” to commence, Meng Qingwu looked at the smiling woman across from her and spoke bluntly: “You must have researched me before coming here.”
“Then you should know that I’m someone who keeps a lover.”
“Can you accept that?”
The words sounded exactly like a man saying, “I won’t have only one woman.”
