My Ex Told Me She’s Still In Love With Me - Chapter 32
Chapter 32: Something Unseemly.
Cheng Yi was busy in the lab during the day and came over to take care of Meng Qingwu at night, like a spinning top that could never stop.
Fortunately, after three days of hospital observation, there were no major issues with Meng Qingwu’s leg. She could be discharged, needing only to return later to have the stitches removed.
On the day of her discharge, Ms. Meng had originally intended to pick her up, but Meng Qingwu declined. It wasn’t a severe injury, so there was no need for such a fuss.
Cheng Yi carried a backpack and carefully supported Meng Qingwu down the hospital steps.
“Wait here for a moment, I’ll go bring the car around.”
“Okay.”
Worried about making her wait or causing her discomfort while standing, Cheng Yi hurried to the parking lot at her fastest speed and drove the car up to Meng Qingwu.
Meng Qingwu looked up and saw the very car she had once gifted to Cheng Yi. It was evident that Cheng Yi had maintained it impeccably.
Cheng Yi got out to assist Meng Qingwu, and after buckling her seatbelt, she asked, “Where to?”
Meng Qingwu closed her eyes. “My place.”
Seeing her lack of desire for conversation, Cheng Yi smiled faintly and drove toward Meng Qingwu’s residence.
Soft, melodious music flowed through the car. As they neared Qiushui Bay, Meng Qingwu opened her eyes.
“Alright, just stop here,” Meng Qingwu said.
Cheng Yi’s heart skipped a beat, followed by a surge of unease.
“We’re here. You should head back now.” Meng Qingwu opened the car door.
Cheng Yi’s grip on the steering wheel tightened until her knuckles turned white. “Aren’t we staying together?”
Meng Qingwu gave her a look that seemed slightly puzzled. “We are lovers/paramours right now, aren’t we?”
“Have you ever seen a ‘lover’ who is allowed to move right into the main house?”
Cheng Yi’s throat bobbed as her body tensed, but she couldn’t find a single word to say.
Meng Qingwu got out of the car. Soon, a female security guard trotted over from the booth to help her inside.
The sunlight streamed through the windshield onto Cheng Yi, but she couldn’t feel any warmth—only a bone-chilling cold.
She had thought that during this period, they had grown a little closer.
The intimacy in the dead of night, the comfort of warm skin—was it all just her own delusion?
Meng Qingwu returned home. She hadn’t missed the look on Cheng Yi’s face when she got out of the car, but so what? Since they were in a “lover” arrangement, they should stick to the boundaries of that role.
Afterward, both were busy with their own lives, and the only time they had contact was at night. Meng Qingwu would call Cheng Yi to tell her to come over.
And every time, as long as Meng Qingwu wanted her, Cheng Yi was always available at a moment’s notice.
After a night of passionate entanglement, they would clean up the next morning and go their separate ways like strangers. They were practicing the “lover” mode perfectly.
Sitting in her office, Meng Qingwu looked at the palm of her hand. Last night, it was this hand that had wandered wantonly over Cheng Yi’s body, igniting fires only to extinguish them one by one.
Cheng Yi’s “taste” was indeed as good as ever.
She exhaled softly, feeling she needed some kind of stimulation to release the suppressed fire within her body. After all, she was human; seeing Cheng Yi bloom beneath her, it was impossible not to feel moved.
However, she didn’t want Cheng Yi to touch her, so she could only suppress it.
…
Shortly after the start of the “Dog Days” of summer, it was Meng Qingwu’s birthday.
She didn’t want a grand celebration this time, just a gathering of family and friends for a meal.
Ms. Meng naturally couldn’t find much in common with the younger crowd. Just as she was about to find an excuse to leave after dinner, she noticed Lan Xining chatting animatedly with them.
Meng Shuyu: “…”
Looking at Lan Xining surrounded by those “delicate young flowers,” smiling like a seductive siren without a hint of discomfort, Meng Shuyu felt out of place.
Lan Xining looked up, noticed Meng Shuyu’s cold gaze, and quickly pulled her over to sit beside her. “Why are you standing there alone? You should come and chat with the young people more; it keeps your mindset youthful.”
Lan Xining’s warm hand held hers and didn’t let go. Even in front of the juniors, she made no effort to hide their intimacy, leaning her head on Meng Shuyu’s shoulder in an extremely affectionate manner.
Meng Shuyu: “…”
Chat about what? Haven’t you noticed they all went silent the moment I walked over?
Jia Yu and the others stared wide-eyed at the two women. The mature charm of these women was displayed to the fullest; although traces of time could be seen in the fine lines at the corners of their eyes, those lines only added to their moving allure.
They were beautiful, incredibly beautiful.
One was beautiful enough, but two together created a geometric multiplication of elegance.
However, the younger girls didn’t dare make a sound because Meng Shuyu’s expression was far too serious.
Lan Xining clearly noticed this too. She gently patted Meng Shuyu’s thigh and said reproachfully, “Do you think you’re facing a negotiation opponent? Is there a need to be so serious? Relax.”
As she spoke, she even reached out to pinch Meng Shuyu’s face, trying to see if she could coax a smile out of her.
Meng Shuyu: “…Stop that.”
Despite her words, she really did try to restrain her aura, forcing a somewhat stiff smile onto her face.
Seeing this, Lan Xining laughed until tears welled in her eyes. She turned to Jia Yu and the others and said, “Don’t mind her, she’s trying her best.”
Meng Shuyu: “…”
Jia Yu and the others burst into laughter. The previous awkwardness vanished as they witnessed the interaction between the two. They even began winking at each other, exchanging silent messages.
Meng Qingwu sat on a nearby sofa, watching Jia Yu and the others pester Lan Xining for the story of her and Meng Shuyu.
Lan Xining answered every question with a smile, while Meng Shuyu became increasingly flustered by Lan Xining’s words.
“Lan Xining!” She pulled at her hand.
“Hmm? What is it?” Lan Xining turned to look at her, seemingly oblivious.
Meng Shuyu’s face flushed various shades of red and blue, like a spilled palette, revealing a rare sense of panic.
“Stop talking.”
Knowing her temperament well, Lan Xining knew the woman was likely dying of embarrassment inside. But—
“Why can’t I say it? It’s not like it’s something unseemly.” She blinked innocently.
Meng Shuyu: “…”
Meng Qingwu couldn’t help but laugh. It was rare to see Ms. Meng so utterly defeated.
“Cheng Yi didn’t come?” Jin Le asked.
Meng Qingwu casually picked up a drink from the table and said lazily, “What would it be if she showed up at a time like this?”
Family and friends were all here; calling her over would be like introducing her officially.
Jin Le looked at her expression quietly and sighed inwardly.
Meng Qingwu glanced at her phone on the coffee table. Since midnight last night, Cheng Yi hadn’t sent a single message.
After Ms. Meng and the others left, Yuan Junjun came over to Meng Qingwu and said mysteriously, “Guess who I ran into a few days ago?”
Meng Qingwu gave her an amused look. “Who?”
“Guess! Just guess!”
“There are so many people in the world, how am I supposed to guess?”
Yuan Junjun rolled her eyes, muttered that she was boring, and revealed the answer: “I ran into Cheng Yi’s old pursuer a couple of days ago!”
The hand Meng Qingwu used to hold her drink paused. “Cheng Yi had so many pursuers, how should I know which one?”
“The one who publicly confessed to Cheng Yi! The one who, after being rejected, declared that as long as Cheng Yi wasn’t married, she would keep trying!”
Meng Qingwu’s brow furrowed slightly. She knew who Yuan Junjun was talking about. That person was… Cheng Yi’s childhood friend?
Bi Xinglan.
She still remembered that after she and Cheng Yi got together, this childhood friend had sought her out. She said that she and Cheng Yi weren’t right for each other and that Meng Qingwu didn’t understand Cheng Yi at all.
At the time, Meng Qingwu didn’t believe her, thinking she was just trying to drive a wedge between them.
But later… those words became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
“Oh, and then?” Meng Qingwu took a sip of her drink.
“And then? Well, she recognized me, didn’t she? After she finished her business, she insisted on pulling me aside for coffee,” Yuan Junjun said, looking a bit exasperated.
“Get to the point,” Jin Le interjected.
Since Jin Le had spoken, Yuan Junjun didn’t dare stall any longer. She curled her lip and said, “She pulled me out for coffee and a chat, but she was actually asking me for news about Qingwu.”
“Asking about Qingwu?” Jin Le frowned. “Doesn’t she know Qingwu and Cheng Yi broke up?”
“Exactly! I thought it was strange too, so I asked her. It turns out she knows. But she said that even after the breakup, Qingwu remains an obstacle between her and Cheng Yi.”
Meng Qingwu: “…”
They’ve already broken up, and she’s still blaming me? Or does she know about our current ‘lover’ relationship?
“By the way, didn’t she swear back then that she’d keep at it as long as Cheng Yi was unmarried? Why did she go abroad later?” Yuan Junjun asked curiously.
Back then, the incident involving her and Cheng Yi was quite a scandal; several schools knew about it. At that time, same-sex marriage wasn’t legal, and there were many prejudices and taboos. Yet, there was a girl publicly confessing to another girl.
Meng Qingwu shook her head. She only knew that after Cheng Yi found out Bi Xinglan had approached her, Cheng Yi told her not to be influenced by others’ words and said she would handle it.
And after that, Bi Xinglan really didn’t appear again.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t asked Cheng Yi, but every time she brought her up, Cheng Yi’s mood would turn sour. Over time, she stopped asking.
“So now that she’s back, does she want to start chasing Cheng Yi again?” Jia Yu asked.
One had to understand that this group of friends had all witnessed the intensity of Bi Xinglan’s pursuit—an arrogant and bold young miss who seemed never to know fear, let alone how societal prejudice could destroy a person. At that time, she was the first to publicly state she liked the same sex.
A thought crossed Meng Qingwu’s mind. She suddenly realized she hadn’t called Cheng Yi over for a few days.
Previously, if she hadn’t called for several days, Cheng Yi would bluntly ask if she wasn’t needed. But lately, she hadn’t received any such messages.
Could this have something to do with Bi Xinglan?
“Qingwu, what are you thinking about?” Cui Lanyu waved a hand in front of her.
Meng Qingwu snapped out of it, a smile playing on her lips as she shook her head. “Nothing, I just feel the world is so small.”
After all the wandering, things eventually came back to this point, encountering people from the past.
“Is that so? The world should be quite small.”
Jin Le, standing by the window, turned around.
“Hmm?” Meng Qingwu looked up.
“Look, right next door. Bi Xinglan.”
