- Chapter 59 - The Eve of the Wedding
Zhang Linen’s eyes were tinged with a faint red at the corners, a sight that sent a restless itch through Ji Zeyuan’s heart.
“So, what was the actual turning point that brought you two together?” Shen Jiuyue asked curiously while cracking melon seeds.
Zhang Linen sat before the vanity mirror wearing a morning robe. As the makeup artist applied powder to her face, she ignored Shen Jiuyue’s inquiry. Her head felt heavy as she found herself repeatedly replaying yesterday’s conversation with Ji Zeyuan.
“You called my mother and told her not to come to the wedding?”
Zhang Linen had pushed the door open and walked straight in. Inside the CEO’s office, the head of the Brand Planning Department was waiting for Ji Zeyuan to approve some documents. When the door opened, both of them looked up; the department head was startled, while Ji Zeyuan looked delighted.
“You may head out first. I’ll call for you once I’ve finished reviewing these,” Ji Zeyuan said. The department head nodded repeatedly in agreement and left with their head bowed.
Zhang Linen’s gaze did not leave Ji Zeyuan until the office door closed behind the department head.
“Why are you here? I thought I wouldn’t see you today.” Ji Zeyuan approached her with a clingy sweetness, intending to press close. Zhang Linen raised her hand, wanting to push her away, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it and silently let her hand drop.
Since their wedding was the following day, Ji Zeyuan was busy with work, while Zhang Linen was currently unemployed; thus, the wedding arrangements had been left entirely to Zhang Linen.
Ji Zeyuan wrapped her arms around Zhang Linen’s waist like a sloth clinging to tree bark, kissing her cheek over and over again, with absolutely no intention of answering the question.
Zhang Linen asked once more: “Why did you call Mom and tell her not to come to the wedding?”
Her tone had grown cold, and only then did Ji Zeyuan realize she was truly angry.
Ji Zeyuan explained softly, “I’m sorry. I thought you wouldn’t want her to come. I took the liberty on my own.”
She released her hold on Zhang Linen and stood to the side, looking like someone ready to admit their mistake and accept punishment.
But the expected interrogation did not come. Instead, a soft sigh caused Ji Zeyuan to look up. Zhang Linen wasn’t looking at her; her gaze was lost, staring elsewhere, the darkness in her eyes appearing as if it had been diluted with water.
“Forget it,” Zhang Linen said. She looked at Ji Zeyuan with a complex expression and turned to leave without saying another word. Ji Zeyuan immediately grabbed her wrist.
Zhang Linen stopped and looked back. Ji Zeyuan looked submissive, yet she couldn’t hide the anxious urgency in her voice: “Can you stay a little longer? I can explain.”
Ever since the wrist-slitting incident, Ji Zeyuan had become extremely clingy. Whenever Zhang Linen wasn’t by her side, she would send a greeting message basically every five minutes. She had even secretly installed a GPS tracking system on Zhang Linen’s phone.
Even so, Ji Zeyuan never dared to ask directly, “Where are you going?” or “Where are you?”—it was as if she was terrified that being too obvious would cause Zhang Linen to deliberately avoid her.
Zhang Linen’s depression had improved significantly through medication and proper care; it generally didn’t flare up more than twice a month, and each episode didn’t last too long.
“Ji Zeyuan, you aren’t my savior. Can you stop always being so self-righteous in trying to help me?” Zhang Linen said sternly.
Ji Zeyuan’s brow furrowed. Stunned, she hurriedly lowered her head, though she quickly adjusted her expression and looked up again with a gentle, shallow smile. Her gaze was fractured, like a wounded small animal.
Zhang Linen’s heart ached. Every time this happened, a question would surface in her mind: Why were they still always unhappy and having moments of sadness even though they were already together?
They didn’t have to worry about the trivialities of daily life, and the struggles of the social arena didn’t exist between the two of them. Yet, Zhang Linen sometimes still felt exhausted and annoyed. What pained her most was that these negative emotions seemed to affect Ji Zeyuan as well.
Clearly, the next day was the big day they had both been looking forward to, yet today was turning out like this.
“Fine.” Zhang Linen lowered her eyes and rested her forehead in her hand. “Explain yourself.”
The lessons of the past were too great; now, both of them tried their best not to hide things from one another.
Ji Zeyuan turned her face away to quietly wipe a tear from the corner of her eye. Regaining her composure, she said, “I didn’t tell her not to come. She called me and asked if I could forgive her. I told her… I couldn’t forgive what she did to you. She ignored you and spoke to you with such malice; I really can’t forgive that.”
Zhang Linen said sharply, “That is in the past. What is there that can’t be forgiven? Why do you have to speak as if you were the victim? Ji Zeyuan, this is really exhausting and annoying.”
After saying these words, even Zhang Linen herself was a bit surprised. She looked at Ji Zeyuan, her lips twitching, as if a thorn were stuck in her throat, unable to go up or down.
Ji Zeyuan didn’t argue back, nor did she act aggrieved. She simply watched Zhang Linen silently with a peaceful expression, as if Zhang Linen could throw a brick at her face right now and she would accept it with a smile, perhaps even complimenting her on the throw.
Zhang Linen felt as though she had thrown a punch into a bale of cotton—and it was a punch she hadn’t wanted to throw in the first place.
Ji Zeyuan said, “Then I will go and invite her again.”
Zhang Linen’s brow tightened as she said, “I already said to forget it. If it’s for your sake, she will definitely come, but…”
She didn’t continue, because she couldn’t bring herself to say it: she really wanted Zhang Qian to come for her sake.
Zhang Linen said, “I’m leaving now. I still have things to take care of.”
Ji Zeyuan held her hand and wouldn’t let go. Zhang Linen frowned and asked, “You’ve finished your explanation. Is there anything else you want to say?”
“I love you,” Ji Zeyuan said, her amber eyes clear and bright.
The furrow in Zhang Linen’s brow relaxed, and her tense expression immediately softened.
“Can I kiss you?” Ji Zeyuan asked.
Zhang Linen said, “It doesn’t matter what I answer, you’ll…”
Before she could finish, Ji Zeyuan leaned in. She bowed her head slightly, her thin lips pressing against Zhang Linen’s, her tongue skillfully parting Zhang Linen’s lips to explore inside.
Zhang Linen’s footing became unsteady, and she braced her hand against Ji Zeyuan’s shoulder. Her waist twisted as she responded to the warm mouth and tongue, her body involuntarily producing pheromones with the scent of green grass.
“I love you, I love you, I love you,” Ji Zeyuan murmured, her forehead resting against Zhang Linen’s. She said it over and over. Zhang Linen held Ji Zeyuan tightly, with a force that seemed as if she wanted to embed the other woman into her own body.
“It’s like this every time,” Zhang Linen said, yet she didn’t let go.
Ji Zeyuan lightly rubbed her face and chin against Zhang Linen’s thin cheek, saying, “Don’t go yet, okay? I miss you so much.”
Zhang Linen said, “We clearly see each other every day.”
Ji Zeyuan replied, “It’s not enough.”
Zhang Linen looked at the closed door and asked, “Should we go and lock it?”
Ji Zeyuan walked over and bolted the office door. She also locked the frosted glass door that connected to the secretary’s office.
“And this.” Zhang Linen looked toward the floor-to-ceiling glass wall facing the sun. Ji Zeyuan went to pull the curtains, and the room was instantly plunged into darkness.
“Come here.” Hearing the voice, Ji Zeyuan turned her head. Zhang Linen was leaning against the office desk. Her face wasn’t clear in the dim room, and Ji Zeyuan hurried over without hesitation.
Zhang Linen grabbed Ji Zeyuan’s collar, tightening her grip bit by bit. Her fingertips brushed against the skin of Ji Zeyuan’s neck, and the green grass pheromones gradually saturated Ji Zeyuan’s entire body.
“En-en, are you…” Ji Zeyuan’s gaze was dazed. Zhang Linen pressed her thumb against Ji Zeyuan’s throat, her jade-like lips curling slightly: “Hmm?”
Ji Zeyuan leaned in, wanting to kiss Zhang Linen’s lips. Zhang Linen pushed against Ji Zeyuan and backed up slightly. The pen holder on the desk was knocked to the floor, and pens clattered everywhere.
“Do you like this?” Ji Zeyuan asked with some agitation. Zhang Linen countered, “Like what?”
After asking, Zhang Linen increased the pressure of her fingertips. Ji Zeyuan’s cheeks flushed slightly, her throat bobbed, and she said, “The throat clutching… and stuff.”
A cunning light flickered in Zhang Linen’s eyes. Her index finger scraped against Ji Zeyuan’s sensitive earlobe as she chuckled low without a word.
The rose-scented Alpha pheromones quietly began to emerge. Though she was a Superior Alpha, her pheromones took on a submissive stance before an ordinary Omega.
Zhang Linen stroked the corner of Ji Zeyuan’s mouth and asked, “Don’t you like it?”
Ji Zeyuan unconsciously let out low moans and gasps. She looked at Zhang Linen, her eyes filled with the colors of spring.
“It’s… a bit strange,” Ji Zeyuan whispered with a furrowed brow. Zhang Linen scratched Ji Zeyuan’s chin and asked, “So, you don’t like it?”
Ji Zeyuan restlessly rubbed against the palm of Zhang Linen’s hand. She stared at Zhang Linen and shook her head, her eyes showing unshielded desire.
Zhang Linen asked once more: “Do you like it or not?”
Ji Zeyuan’s lips kissed Zhang Linen’s wrist. She said softly, “I like you.”
Those three words made Zhang Linen’s heart tremble. She curled her fingers, rested her forehead against her hand, and lowered her head. After a moment, she murmured, “So you don’t like it?”
Ji Zeyuan leaned forward, and Zhang Linen reclined onto the desk under her touch.
The little cat’s body turned into cream—cream that smelled of green grass. Ji Zeyuan flipped the little cat over. The cat let out soft whimpers, appearing somewhat uncomfortable, yet she still obediently allowed Ji Zeyuan to maneuver her.
Midway through, someone came by. Zhao Yan’s voice, accompanied by a knock, came from the secretary’s office: “President Ji, President Wang from Yuebo Media is here.”
Sweat ran down the smooth lines of her face. Ji Zeyuan covered Zhang Linen’s mouth, trying her best to steady her breathing as she replied, “Take him to the reception room first. I’ll be over in a moment.”
Though Zhao Yan found it strange that it was dark inside, she didn’t ask further and did as Ji Zeyuan instructed.
“One kiss.” Ji Zeyuan released her hand and pressed her lips to Zhang Linen’s, swirling her tongue to complete a hurried yet passionate kiss.
Zhang Linen was dazed as Ji Zeyuan picked her up. She watched as Ji Zeyuan first cleaned her fingers with a tissue, then knelt down to support her ankle and put her shoes on for her. Suddenly, she said, “I love you too.”
Heart thumping, Ji Zeyuan looked up. She stood and smoothed out Zhang Linen’s dress, asking, “Do you like me?”
Zhang Linen nodded, her voice somewhat raspy: “I do.”
Ji Zeyuan pulled Zhang Linen’s waist tight, sucking on her lip as she asked, “Do you both like and love me?”
Zhang Linen remained silent. Ji Zeyuan massaged Zhang Linen’s scent gland, and a series of soft moans escaped Zhang Linen’s mouth as she answered unclearly, “Mmm-hmmm…”
Afterward, Zhang Linen was always exceptionally “soft.” Her usually sharp and clever consciousness seemed to drift away; she would agree to whatever was said and would not be stubborn or try to act tough. She was honest and gentle.
Ji Zeyuan reluctantly kissed Zhang Linen twice more, muttering, “That President Wang is so annoying, coming exactly at this time.”
Zhang Linen’s eyes were tinged with red at the corners, a sight that sent a restless itch through Ji Zeyuan’s heart.
“Tomorrow… I prepared a gift for you,” Ji Zeyuan said. While she let out a sigh of relief, she also seemed a bit regretful, whispering to herself, “I originally wanted to tell you tomorrow, but seeing you like this, I really couldn’t help myself.”
