- Chapter 32 - The Leak
You’ve fallen in love with your own biological sister?
After a single glass of wine, Ji Zeyuan’s face was already tinged with a faint flush.
Perhaps her tolerance for alcohol was truly poor; even with just one low-alcohol cocktail, she was already feeling a bit lightheaded.
But Ji Zeyuan didn’t just want to feel lightheaded; she wanted to forget everything.
She looked at the hard liquor next to Shen Jiuyue’s hand, pushed her empty glass over, and said in a low voice, “Pour me a glass of that too.”
Shen Jiuyue had a good tolerance and wasn’t very drunk. Seeing that Ji Zeyuan was already this intoxicated from just a bit of cocktail, she only poured a tiny amount into the bottom of the glass.
Ji Zeyuan took the glass back and drained it in one gulp. The feeling of floating gradually went to her head.
“President Ji, you…” Shen Jiuyue started to say but hesitated. Taking advantage of the alcohol-induced courage, Ji Zeyuan said, “Speak plainly.”
Shen Jiuyue let out a couple of silly laughs through her slight intoxication. The sound of waves crashing against the shore was carried into the room by the wind.
“Are you really a non-marriage advocate?”
After asking this, Shen Jiuyue’s mind cleared slightly. She looked at Ji Zeyuan, her heart in her throat, fearing that Ji Zeyuan might be displeased again.
But the heavily intoxicated Ji Zeyuan did not flare up. She only lowered her head and said in a hoarse voice, “No.”
Shen Jiuyue pursed her lips and quietly released some sweet, strawberry-scented pheromones, appearing both enticing and pleasing.
“Then President Ji was tricking me before,” Shen Jiuyue smiled. Ji Zeyuan didn’t answer; she just silently took the hard liquor from Shen Jiuyue’s side and poured herself some more.
The lights in the private room were bright, and the atmosphere was ambiguous.
“Then… does President Ji dislike me?”
Shen Jiuyue held her breath, the scent of alcohol spreading through her nasal cavity.
Ji Zeyuan remained silent for a moment, then gently shook her head.
“You are a good person, but sometimes your sense of boundaries is lacking, which I find very annoying.”
A flash crossed Shen Jiuyue’s eyes. She asked softly, “Because I want to step across that boundary, President Ji…”
She stood up and sat down beside Ji Zeyuan, continuing to release her cloyingly sweet pheromones.
“You don’t have anyone you like, do you?”
Shen Jiuyue waited for a favorable answer. At this point, she already felt that victory was within her grasp.
Ji Zeyuan kept her head down and didn’t say a word. Shen Jiuyue quietly raised her hand, wanting to stroke her cheek, but an untimely teardrop fell. Shen Jiuyue stopped her hand in shock.
“No.” Ji Zeyuan cried silently, but the tears flowed incessantly like a flood.
The feeling Shen Jiuyue experienced at that moment was hard for her to describe. She had never imagined Ji Zeyuan had such a side to her.
Ji Zeyuan was clearly drunk; it was unclear how much consciousness she still possessed. Shen Jiuyue furrowed her brows, pondered for a moment, and intended to ignore this unpleasant side to continue moving closer to Ji Zeyuan.
Suddenly, Ji Zeyuan’s phone rang.
Shen Jiuyue instinctively looked over; it was a call from Zhang Linen.
Ji Zeyuan was dazed and didn’t seem to hear it. Shen Jiuyue’s heart stirred; she took the phone and quietly walked out of the private room to answer it.
“Hello, this is Shen Jiuyue.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end. Shen Jiuyue held her breath, waiting for Zhang Linen’s reaction.
“Where is Ji Zeyuan?” Zhang Linen’s voice was deathly calm.
“Wait until tomorrow to call. I probably can’t wake her up right now,” Shen Jiuyue said, intentionally using words that invited misunderstanding.
The sound of a vase shattering on the floor came from the other end of the line.
Shen Jiuyue was startled. After a short while, Zhang Linen’s voice, clearly filled with rage, came through the phone.
“Shen Jiuyue, I know you are still at the restaurant. Give the phone to Ji Zeyuan.”
Shen Jiuyue took a quiet look into the private room; Ji Zeyuan had already collapsed onto the dining table.
“She’s drunk. Call back tomorrow.” Having said that, Shen Jiuyue decisively hung up the phone and muted it.
Ji Zeyuan was very quiet. Shen Jiuyue quietly placed the phone back by her hand. Just as she was about to get up, Ji Zeyuan suddenly mumbled a blurred sentence.
Though the voice was very small, Shen Jiuyue heard it, and her heart trembled violently.
“En-en, why… why do you have to be my sister…”
After a moment of shock, various details connected into a single line in Shen Jiuyue’s mind. Every mystery was cleared away the moment those words were spoken.
A subtle feeling rose in Shen Jiuyue’s heart. At this moment, she had only one thought: At the very least, those two could never be together.
…
When she woke up again, Ji Zeyuan’s head felt as if it had been run over by a truck.
She turned over tiredly, wanting to sleep a bit longer, when suddenly a familiar face entered her vision.
Ji Zeyuan’s eyes widened, and she almost cried out in surprise, but seeing Zhang Linen sleeping peacefully, she managed to restrain herself.
Memories of last night rushed in like a tide. Ji Zeyuan racked her brain but couldn’t remember how Zhang Linen ended up here.
Drinking really messes things up; Ji Zeyuan had truly experienced the weight of that phrase.
Both she and Zhang Linen were fully clothed, so nothing that shouldn’t have happened had occurred, which made Ji Zeyuan breathe a sigh of relief.
She glanced at her watch; it was just 9:00 AM.
Zhang Linen’s body was curled up as if she were a bit cold. Ji Zeyuan gently covered her with the quilt. Zhang Linen frowned and then slowly opened her eyes.
The two looked at each other in a quiet, beautiful moment.
“Why are you here?” Ji Zeyuan softly broke the silence.
Zhang Linen blinked, and then the corners of her mouth curved up. “I took a plane here last night.”
Ji Zeyuan chuckled and said, “I wasn’t asking how you got here; I was asking why you suddenly came over.”
Zhang Linen held Ji Zeyuan’s hand and rubbed her forehead against the back of it, saying warmly, “I wasn’t feeling well.”
Ji Zeyuan brushed Zhang Linen’s hair distressedly and frowned. “Didn’t I deepen the mark for you before I left? Why would you be unwell?”
Zhang Linen’s eyelashes trembled, and she looked down without speaking.
Just then, the phone beside Zhang Linen chimed. Ji Zeyuan instinctively looked over and caught a glimpse of a message from Mia popping up on the screen: “Miss Secretary, have you arrived safely?”
Zhang Linen reached for the phone, but Ji Zeyuan leaned over to stop her. Her fingers locked tightly into the gaps between Zhang Linen’s fingers, pinning her hand against the bedsheets.
“You… were you and Mia together yesterday?” Ji Zeyuan leaned over Zhang Linen, their breaths clearly audible to each other.
Zhang Linen remained motionless, allowing Ji Zeyuan to pin her down, her obsidian-like eyes curving slightly.
“Yes, but only for a little while.”
Ji Zeyuan’s throat felt tight as she asked, “What were you doing together?”
Zhang Linen’s gaze suddenly became somewhat piercing, and she answered with a question of her own: “And you? How did you end up with Shen Jiuyue? I saw the trending searches.”
Ji Zeyuan’s momentum weakened as she explained, “Her schedule brought her here; we just happened to run into each other.”
Zhang Linen looked at her with a fixed gaze, smiling but remaining silent.
At that moment, the hotel doorbell rang. Ji Zeyuan hesitated for a second before letting go of Zhang Linen, saying, “It should be breakfast. I’ll go open the door.”
Zhang Linen smiled faintly, but the moment Ji Zeyuan turned her back, her eyes turned cold.
As Ji Zeyuan got out of bed, she grabbed the portable suppressant from her coat pocket just in case, and then she went to open the door. “Thank you…”
Her words stopped abruptly because the person at the door was not the waiter with breakfast, but Shen Jiuyue.
“President Ji, I really didn’t expect you would take the initiative to look for me one day.” Shen Jiuyue was smiling happily. Ji Zeyuan frowned deeply, not understanding the situation.
Shen Jiuyue saw from Ji Zeyuan’s expression that she seemed unaware of what was happening, and her heart tightened instantly.
A faint, familiar scent of grass-like Omega pheromones wafted through the air.
Shen Jiuyue’s voice trembled slightly as she asked, “President Ji, are you alone?”
Before Ji Zeyuan could speak, Zhang Linen behind her answered on her behalf: “No.”
Zhang Linen leaned against the wall with a shallow smile, arms crossed, watching Shen Jiuyue with a slight upturn of her cherry-red lips.
Shen Jiuyue’s face darkened. She closed her eyes in resignation and said, “It was you, wasn’t it? You were the one who sent me the message.”
Zhang Linen looked solemnly at Ji Zeyuan. Ji Zeyuan had already guessed the sequence of events based on the situation before her.
“It was me,” Ji Zeyuan said. Shen Jiuyue was immediately stunned.
Ji Zeyuan said seriously, “I’m sorry, something has come up here, and I might have to break our appointment. Miss Shen, please go back first. I will take the initiative to apologize to you later.”
Shen Jiuyue looked at Zhang Linen unwillingly, but her reason told her that there was no point in arguing now.
In the end, she could only suppress her burning anger and nodded gracefully. “Then President Ji, don’t forget about me.”
Ji Zeyuan said, “Naturally.”
With that, Shen Jiuyue turned to leave, and Ji Zeyuan closed the door.
“Are you very close with her now?” Zhang Linen asked softly the moment the door closed.
Ji Zeyuan looked back at her and eventually shook her head. “Not close, it’s just…”
Suddenly, a flash like lightning crossed Ji Zeyuan’s mind. Fragments of last night’s memories pieced themselves together. It felt as if she had been doused with a bucket of cold water, catching her completely off guard.
Ji Zeyuan’s face turned deathly pale, and she immediately turned to open the door and chased after her.
Shen Jiuyue was walking toward the elevator. Just as she was about to step inside, her wrist was grabbed and she was pulled back out.
“Did I…” Ji Zeyuan gasped for air, her eyes burning like torches. “Did I say something to you?”
Shen Jiuyue’s eyes widened. After her initial panic, she understood immediately.
“Yes, President Ji. Did you remember?” Shen Jiuyue smiled, tilting her lips. “Are you referring to the fact that you’ve fallen in love with your own biological sister?”
Ji Zeyuan’s hand on Shen Jiuyue’s wrist suddenly tightened as if she were about to snap it.
“Shen Jiuyue, if you dare to leak this matter, I will definitely kill you.”
Ji Zeyuan spoke through gritted teeth, her eyes turning a blood-red color. Her expression was more crazed than it had ever been.
Shen Jiuyue bit her lip and forced a smile. “President Ji, I’m heartbroken. You actually think I would harm you? I’m not that base of a person.”
Ji Zeyuan did not lower her guard because of this. She maintained the pressure on the wrist and continued to threaten, “This whole thing is an accident. En-en doesn’t want me to know that we are sisters, so you…”
Before she could finish, Shen Jiuyue looked to the side. Ji Zeyuan followed her gaze in alarm; Zhang Linen was standing at the corner, quietly watching them.
The distance was quite far, and Ji Zeyuan’s voice was very low, so Zhang Linen couldn’t hear what they were saying.
But from a distance, it looked as if Ji Zeyuan was pinning Shen Jiuyue against the wall and whispering intimate words she didn’t want others to hear.
“I will find you privately later,” Ji Zeyuan whispered in Shen Jiuyue’s ear before letting her go.
A circle of blue and purple bruises had been squeezed onto Shen Jiuyue’s wrist. She rubbed her aching wrist and met Zhang Linen’s icy gaze.
Zhang Linen’s eyes met hers for only a second before shifting away, appearing as if she didn’t care—or perhaps, as if she didn’t want to care.
“President Ji,” Shen Jiuyue suddenly spoke. Ji Zeyuan stopped and looked back, her expression wary.
“Then… I’ll see you next time.”
After saying this, Shen Jiuyue pressed the elevator button.
