My Angel, My Guardian (GL) - Chapter 17
Chapter 17
“Miss, what is our next move?”
In the car, Long Xun leaned back against the rear seat with her eyes closed to rest. Her confidant in the passenger seat asked softly.
“Since the Ying family is protecting them so well, let’s take a rest for a while. I’ve waited all these years; a few more won’t make a difference.”
Long Xun opened her eyes and looked out the window. The city lights were beginning to glow. Couples on the street were whispering or laughing brightly. Suddenly, Long Xun felt a fleeting desire for someone to accompany her. Just as she fell into deep thought, the car braked violently, nearly throwing her from the seat.
“What happened?” Long Xun asked, her brow furrowed.
“I think we hit someone,” the assistant replied, unbuckling their seatbelt and stepping out. Long Xun followed. A young woman lay in front of the car, with no obvious major injuries visible.
“Help her into the car. Send her to the hospital.”
Long Xun walked to the girl’s side. Under the streetlights, she studied the girl’s face. It wasn’t stunningly beautiful, but rather a very refined and balanced countenance one that made Long Xun’s heart stir unexpectedly.
“Miss… you go home first. I’ll take her to the hospital,” the confidant suggested while picking up the woman. Long Xun shook her head.
“I’ll take her myself. You guys follow behind.”
Long Xun got into the driver’s seat. Her team knew that once she made a decision, no one could oppose her. They placed the woman on the back seat. Long Xun drove to a nearby hospital and waited patiently outside the emergency room. Before long, the doctor emerged.
“How is my friend?” Long Xun asked coldly. The doctor removed his mask.
“Nothing serious. Just a mild concussion and some superficial wounds. She can be discharged after two days of observation.”
“Arrange the best ward and the best medical staff.”
Long Xun dropped a Black Card and turned to leave. The doctor sighed as he looked at the card; money really could solve anything. Long Xun eventually sat in a chair by the bed, watching the woman. Her intuition told her this woman was not simple; even in a coma, she exuded an air of righteousness.
Soon, the woman groaned and slowly opened her eyes. She scanned the room with confusion, but when her gaze landed on Long Xun, her eyes narrowed with immediate loathing. Long Xun didn’t miss this look, but she couldn’t understand why the woman hated her.
“Where is this? Long Xun.”
Long Xun was startled. How did this woman know her name?
“The hospital. My driver hit you, so I brought you here. You know me?” Long Xun leaned back and crossed her arms, her eyes searching the woman on the bed.
“Hmph. So the mob knows how to take responsibility after hitting someone?” The woman sneered with disdain.
Long Xun’s brow twitched. Mob. The woman wasn’t wrong, but hearing those words from her mouth made Long Xun feel incredibly uncomfortable.
“Don’t make the mob sound so irredeemable, alright? But seriously, how do you know me?” Long Xun wanted to know why she was so hated. Yes, her subordinate hit her, but she had personally brought her to the hospital and provided the best care. What more did she want?
“Who are you calling ‘Miss’ (prostitute)? You’re the ‘Miss’!” (Note: Long Xun used ‘Miss’ as a polite address, but the woman took it as the slang for a lady of the night).
Long Xun felt a surge of murderous intent. Could this woman not speak civilly for once?
“Long Xun, don’t expect me to be grateful. You hit me; this is what you should be doing. Also, I am a police officer. I have nothing to say to a triad member who only knows how to kill and burn. Leave!”
The woman kicked her out rudely. Long Xun’s temper flared. This woman didn’t know how to appreciate a favor.
“What does me being in the mob have to do with you? I didn’t kill your family. You’re a bizarre woman. I should have just left you on the road to fend for yourself!”
Fuming, Long Xun stood up and stormed out. On the bed, the woman closed her eyes in pain.
“You didn’t kill my family… but you killed my mentor,” she murmured to herself.
Long Xun got into her car and slammed her hand against the steering wheel in frustration. She wondered if she had a screw loose for feeling attracted to such an unreasonable woman. After kicking and punching the innocent car until she was exhausted, her anger finally cooled.
She drove back to her apartment, tossed her keys on the coffee table, showered, and tried to sleep. However, the woman’s face haunted her mind, chasing away any hope of sleep. After tossing and turning all night, she arrived at the office the next morning with dark circles under her eyes.
“President,” the secretary greeted her respectfully. Long Xun nodded with a yawn, walked into her office, and pinched the bridge of her nose. Her phone rang.
“How is it?”
“Eldest Miss, Li Mingxi has sent her two grandmothers abroad. Do we need to take action?” a deep male voice asked.
“I’ve said it before: I only want the lives of Li Mingxi, Ying Jia’en, and Xiao Zetong. Don’t trouble the others. Anything else?” Long Xun never claimed to be a good person, but she wasn’t a bloodthirsty maniac who killed the innocent. She only cared about settling her specific debts.
“Also, there are many more bodyguards around Li Mingxi’s house. From the gate to the parking lot to her floor it’s airtight. Some of them are definitely not Ying family men.”
“I know. Likely the Bai family. Find an opening and strike. I want to see Li Mingxi’s body within a week.”
Long Xun hung up and closed her eyes. The humiliations of her childhood flooded back. She clenched her fists to suppress the indignation and rage.
The intercom buzzed. Long Xun composed herself and picked up. “President, there is an Officer Yang Guang here to see you.”
Long Xun frowned. Officer? Do I know a Yang Guang? “Let her in.”
Soon, the office door opened, and in walked the very culprit who had kept Long Xun awake all night.
“What do you want?” Long Xun asked, looking at the woman. Why was she out of the hospital so early? Did she think being a cop made her made of steel?
“I’m here to pay you back.”
Yang Guang placed a bank card on the desk. Though she was just a lowly police officer, she could afford this. She wanted no ties to Long Xun whatsoever.
“My driver hit you. I should pay the medical bills.”
Long Xun had no intention of taking the money. Once she gave money away, she never took it back especially money given to a woman.
“I don’t want any connection with you. The money in here covers the bill exactly. The PIN is the last six digits of the card. That’s it. I’m leaving.”
As Yang Guang turned to go, Long Xun stood up and grabbed her arm. Yang Guang frowned and attempted an over-the-shoulder throw, but Long Xun anticipated it, pinning Yang Guang’s arm so she couldn’t move.
“Yang Guang, you aren’t a match for me. I don’t mean anything else by it, but since my driver hit you, I am responsible. Besides, I don’t take back money I’ve given willingly.”
Long Xun took the card from the desk, tucked it into Yang Guang’s pocket, and released her, stepping back to signal she could leave. Yang Guang glared at her before turning and walking out.
