My Angel, My Guardian (GL) - Chapter 16
Chapter 16
“What’s wrong?”
After hanging up the phone, Mingxi immediately dialed Xing’er’s number. Once that call ended, she sat on the sofa, staring blankly into space. Jingchun walked over to her, took Mingxi’s hand, and wrote in her palm.
“Long Xun is back. The first thing she did upon her return was nearly take Ai’ai’s life. Sister Lele told us to be careful. Sister, I’m planning to send you to Sister Xing’er’s place. It’s very safe there. Go pack your bags now; I’ve already made arrangements with her. She’ll be sending a car over shortly.”
Li Mingxi decided to secure Jingchun’s safety first. Only when Jingchun was safe could she face whatever was coming without fear. Jingchun was her weakness; she could not allow anything to happen to her.
“I’m not going.”
Jingchun shook her head firmly and wrote in Mingxi’s hand. Mingxi sighed and gripped her hand tight.
“Sister, can you just listen to me this once? I only dare to be fearless when I know you are safe. Only then can I be without burdens. Please, go pack.”
Jingchun didn’t say another word, but she used her actions to show her stance. She sat back on the sofa, picked up the remote, and turned on the TV. Mingxi stood up and walked into Jingchun’s room. she opened the wardrobe, grabbed clothes, and stuffed them into a suitcase. She didn’t care if these luxury garments were being ruined; her only priority was getting Jingchun to a safe place.
“Sister, come with me.”
Mingxi grabbed Jingchun’s hand, trying to pull her up from the sofa, but Jingchun remained motionless, staring straight at her. Mingxi let go of her wrist and sat down beside her.
“Sister, can’t you just listen to me once? I’m begging you, okay? Just go to Xing’er’s to lie low. Once this is resolved, I’ll bring you home. Okay?” Mingxi’s voice softened into a plea.
“This started because of me. I must face it myself,” Jingchun gestured rapidly. Mingxi felt a sudden urge to just knock her out and carry her away.
“The trouble was caused by me, so I should be the one to face it. It has nothing to do with you. Be good, okay?” Mingxi continued to coax her patiently. In her mind, she had already decided: if Jingchun wouldn’t leave voluntarily, she would knock her out. Either way, Jingchun was not staying in danger.
Mingxi’s phone rang. She walked to the window to answer.
“I understand,” she said quietly. She walked back to Jingchun.
“Sister, I’m asking you one last time. Are you coming or not?”
The car sent by Ying Xing’er was already downstairs. There was no time to waste. Jingchun shook her head with finality. Mingxi nodded.
“Fine. Then we won’t go.”
Mingxi walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge for some juice. As she poured it into a crystal glass, she quickly dropped a sleeping pill inside.
“Have something to drink. I’ll go prepare dinner.”
Without looking back, Mingxi returned to the kitchen. She watched the living room from the corner of her eye. She saw Jingchun drink the juice and began counting silently. Within minutes, Jingchun slumped over on the sofa. Mingxi knelt beside her, looking at her face. She didn’t know when she would see her again—or if this was the last time. Sister, I’m sorry, she apologized silently.
She picked Jingchun up and left the house. Downstairs, she exchanged a code with the men waiting by the car and placed Jingchun in the backseat.
“Miss Li, the car behind this one was prepared for you by our Young Lady. There is a hidden compartment in the door containing necessary self-defense weapons. The car itself is bulletproof, shockproof, and reinforced for impact. Also, our Young Lady sent this pistol for your protection. She asks you to be extremely cautious.”
A man who appeared to be the leader handed Mingxi the keys and a small, exquisite pistol.
“I’m entrusting my sister’s safety to you.”
As Mingxi spoke, she slipped a safety amulet into Jingchun’s pocket. It was one Jingchun had once sought for her; now, she hoped it would protect its original owner.
“Rest assured, Miss Li. As long as I am breathing, not a single hair on Miss Jing’s head will be harmed.”
The man promised as he got into the car. Mingxi watched them drive away until the car vanished from sight. Suddenly, a round of applause broke out behind her. Mingxi turned to see a woman standing not far away—wearing black suit trousers, a beige casual shirt, and stiletto heels. Her face was lightly made up, and her lips curled into a smirk.
“Why so tense? The one I want to kill is you; it has nothing to do with that mute. It seems after all these years, you’re still protecting her.”
The woman’s smile was as beautiful as an angel’s, but her words were like a demon’s from hell, dripping with malice.
“You’re Long Xun?”
Mingxi watched as Long Xun approached. Long Xun laughed mockingly.
“Your memory is quite good. Then you must remember how you humiliated me. I intend to settle that debt thoroughly. I’m here today to tell you that your life is on a countdown. I guarantee you won’t live past a week.”
Long Xun stopped five or six paces away. Mingxi stepped forward, looking her in the eye.
“I’m telling you: I was the one who humiliated you. Don’t touch anyone else, and especially don’t hurt Mingxi (Jingchun), or I won’t let you get away with it.”
“And what can you do to me? Do you think you’re safe just because the Ying family is protecting you? Li Mingxi, I won’t let you die so easily.” Long Xun poked Mingxi’s chest and then blew imaginary dust off her finger.
Mingxi nodded. “I may not be able to do much to you, but Long Xun, haven’t you heard the old saying? Even a cornered rabbit will bite. Don’t push me too far, or I’ll make sure we both go down together.”
With that, Mingxi turned and went inside. Long Xun gave a disdainful laugh. Mingxi returned to her apartment and sat on Jingchun’s bed, where her scent still lingered. She didn’t know when she’d see her again or what crisis awaited, but as long as Jingchun was safe, she feared nothing.
Meanwhile, numerous cars appeared around Mingxi’s home, the occupants staying highly alert. Mysterious buyers had simultaneously purchased nearby properties, and they were now filled with bodyguards in suits.
Li Xi opened the door to Mingxi’s home. Mingxi’s eyes darted around as she pulled out the pistol, chambered a round, and crept toward the door. When she saw it was Li Xi, she breathed a sigh of relief.
“Grandma, what are you doing here?”
Li Xi rarely visited, especially since getting older; she usually stayed home to drink tea and read the newspaper.
“I came to get you and Jingchun for dinner.”
Li Xi’s eyes fell on the gun in Mingxi’s hand. Mingxi didn’t panic; she casually set it on the coffee table.
“It’s a model a business partner gave me.”
“I see. Where’s Jingchun?” Li Xi asked.
Mingxi’s mind raced. “Jingchun went out for a performance.”
“Alright. Then come over and eat.”
Jingchun often left for tours without a long goodbye, so Li Xi didn’t suspect a thing. She turned to leave, and Mingxi pocketed the gun and followed her.
“Grandmas, you haven’t been out for a while, right? Tomorrow, I’ll book a tour for you to go traveling.”
Mingxi wanted to get Li Xi and her partner away to safety.
“We’re in our sixties; we don’t have the energy to go playing anymore. We appreciate the thought, though.” Li Xi declined.
“Grandma, you aren’t old at all! Just listen to me this once. How about J-Country? Go see the snow-capped mountains and the cherry blossoms. Stay for a few extra days if you like. I’ll have my secretary book the tickets right now.”
Without waiting for another objection, Mingxi called her secretary. Only when her loved ones were far away could she truly focus on the fight ahead.
