Mr. Lu Was Devastated After I Left - Chapter 4
Back in the apartment, Xu Zhuoyang sat on the floor, grumbling and cursing for quite a while. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. He wiped his still damp eyes, puzzled. Who would be visiting at this hour?
Could it be that “turtle son” had returned to apologize?
He scoffed, sauntered to the door, and swung it open with an air of arrogance. “You have the nerve to come back—” His voice died in his throat. Seeing the face outside, his legs uncontrollably buckled, and his bravado vanished instantly. “Sister Lin.”
Standing at the door was not Lu Beiye, but Lan Lin, the manager who kept Xu Zhuoyang under a tight leash.
Once inside, Lan Lin scanned the room with a sharp, thorough gaze.
She took in the breakfast for two that had long since gone cold on the dining table, the two different sizes of slippers in the shoe cabinet, the ashtray on the coffee table despite Xu Zhuoyang never smoking, and the photograph Xu Zhuoyang was now frantically trying to hide behind his back.
Lan Lin narrowed her eyes, staring at Xu Zhuoyang with a dangerous intensity. Breaking into a cold sweat, Xu Zhuoyang could only manage a sycophantic smile. He gripped the photo tightly behind his back, stiffening his neck to withstand her piercing gaze.
This was Lu Beiye, the CEO of Fengying Entertainment. If Sister Lin saw the photo, his secret, underground relationship would be exposed immediately.
Lan Lin’s gaze finally settled on his red, swollen eyes. “Did you two fight?”
He shook his head quickly. “No. I was just watching television and felt a bit moved.”
Lan Lin looked at the television behind him with a blank expression. It was currently playing a news segment about two elderly women who had gotten into a fistfight over eggs at a morning market, eventually landing both in the hospital.
Xu Zhuoyang said nothing.
Lan Lin knew Xu Zhuoyang had a boyfriend, but she knew nothing else about him. Because Xu Zhuoyang was so protective of that person, she remained intensely curious about the identity of this secret lover.
“It is fortunate it was me today. If that had been the paparazzi at the door and they had snapped a photo of your situation, you would be trending on social media by this afternoon.”
Lan Lin lectured him like a nagging mother. Xu Zhuoyang did not dare utter a word, only nodding frantically.
Lan Lin sat on the sofa and handed a script to Xu Zhuoyang. “Take a look.”
Xu Zhuoyang took it and flipped through the pages. Lan Lin explained patiently, “You should remember Director Li Sheng. You have worked with him before. He is famous for his meticulous approach to filming, and every drama he directs becomes a massive hit. I have secured an audition for you for the lead role. I think this character suits you well, the script as a whole is excellent, and it is bound to be a success once it airs.”
“You should prepare for it.”
Xu Zhuoyang became absorbed in the script. The irritation from his morning argument with Lu Beiye evaporated, replaced by total immersion in the story.
After reading a few pages, he understood the premise: the protagonist and his brother were twins who became orphans after their parents died. They were accidentally abducted by human traffickers and were involved in a car accident. The two children were sent to different hospitals, treated, and then sent to orphanages, only to be adopted by different families.
The second male lead suffered an injury during the car accident that would affect him for life. He was adopted by a family in dire circumstances and had a miserable life, while his older brother’s circumstances were the opposite. Eventually, the two met again through their work. The protagonist became a police officer, while the brother became a forensic doctor. The older brother no longer recognized his sibling, but the younger brother never forgot his brother’s face. From that moment on, the younger brother began a campaign of crazed revenge, while the older brother searched for the culprit behind a series of baffling cases.
Lan Lin was very satisfied with Xu Zhuoyang’s focus. “Well? Is it interesting?”
Xu Zhuoyang looked up, hesitant. “The script is great, but since they are twins, there are strict requirements for their appearance. Is it easy to find an actor for the other role?”
In truth, this was a dual lead drama. Although the second male lead was an antagonist, his screen time was equal to the protagonist, and his character design was incredibly compelling.
Lan Lin waved her hand dismissively. “You do not need to worry about the other actor. I heard they have already found someone. Although he is a newcomer, his acting skills are definitely up to par, and his appearance perfectly matches the image of the forensic doctor brother you have in your head.”
