- Chapter 9 - The 'Peerless Beauty' Track
“Ugh, organizing a talent show is tough, especially when the three major agencies keep pushing their trainees on us,” Chen Xu grumbled, rubbing his temples in frustration.
The original intention of the show was to discover genuine musical talent from the public.
But as soon as the program was announced, the three major agencies immediately started pulling strings to get their trainees in.
They ended up snatching half the contestant slots.
Though he opposed this, Chen Xu had no choice but to grit his teeth and bear it.
After all, they were the show’s sponsors—without their support, the program wouldn’t even get off the ground.
That said, just because they shoved their people in didn’t mean they’d last long.
Their success would depend entirely on their skills.
If they were the type to scream over a tiny scratch like they’d lost an arm.
Chen Xu could only scoff.
“Hey, Old Chen, check this contestant out—he’s interesting.”
The man beside him pointed at a contestant’s profile on the computer screen.
“Chen An, a sophomore at Imperial University?” Chen Xu glanced over, only to freeze at the next line.
Blind?
“Pretty intriguing, huh?” The man’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
Chen Xu frowned. “Old An, why are you so hyped about a blind guy?”
An Zizai, the assistant director of Star of Tomorrow, was in charge of all contestant information for the show.
“Heh, weren’t you just looping his song nonstop the other day?” An Zizai smirked meaningfully.
“Song? You mean—?” Chen Xu’s eyes widened.
A while back, he’d stumbled upon an original track online called You Are My Eyes. He’d fallen in love with it at first listen.
But since there was no official audio release, he’d had to extract the music from the video. Even now, he still listened to it whenever he had free time.
The singer was supposedly blind too.
An Zizai nodded. “Think this guy might be our dark horse?”
“Dark horse…” Chen Xu mulled over the words, a faint smile creeping onto his face as he studied Chen An’s profile.
The next day, Luo Shiyu escorted Chen An to the Star of Tomorrow filming site.
Along the way, she kept giving him advice.
“Once you’re in there, don’t be nervous. Stay natural and composed.”
“I’ll be waiting outside for your good news.”
Chen An could only nod passively as Luo Shiyu’s voice buzzed in his ear.
“Wait, why is your clothes dirty?”
Luo Shiyu suddenly noticed a grimy mark on Chen An’s back.
It looked suspiciously like a shoe print.
“No way, I just washed this,” Chen An said, puzzled. “Actually, it’s been weird lately—my dorm always smells funny, and sometimes my shoes end up outside the door for no reason.”
Chen An didn’t get it, but Luo Shiyu knew exactly what was going on.
Someone was messing with him.
How despicable. Just wait till I find out who’s behind this, Luo Shiyu fumed inwardly.
Who in their right mind would bully someone who couldn’t even see?
“Chen An, have you ever thought about living off-campus?”
She tentatively broached the subject.
After all, college students could apply for off-campus housing. If she remembered correctly, she did own an apartment near the university.
However, she preferred the atmosphere of the school dormitory, so she never went to stay there.
Now that someone at school had messed with Chen An’s shoes and clothes, who knew what they might do next.
“Why live off-campus?” Chen An asked, puzzled.
“You’re going on the show now. What if you become famous? You’d be swarmed by people at school, and that wouldn’t be good for others,” Luo Shiyu reasoned.
But to her surprise, Chen An shook his head. “How could I possibly become famous? I might get eliminated in the first round. Besides, I don’t have the money to rent a place off-campus.”
He was telling the truth. He had already decided to withdraw after completing the first-round task.
“I’ll think about it,” he said, just to brush it off for now.
Luo Shiyu, however, had other plans. She intended to tidy up that apartment while Chen An was away at the show.
Imperial Capital Stadium.
The staff of Star of Tomorrow had already received the news and were waiting outside.
Among the crowd, Chen An was easy to spot—he was the one holding a white cane.
Luo Shiyu handed Chen An over to the staff and then left.
The staff member escorting Chen An sighed inwardly.
This blind guy is really lucky to have such a beautiful girlfriend.
Sure, he’s handsome too, but he can’t even see himself or his girlfriend.
How tragic.
Muttering to himself, he led Chen An into the venue.
The other contestants who saw Chen An were curious.
A blind contestant?
Some were intrigued, while others sneered.
A few who had arrived in luxury cars, dressed to impress, smirked at the sight of Chen An.
A blind guy dares to compete in a talent show? Who gave him the courage?
Does he really think he belongs on the same stage as us trainees?
Pathetic.
After showing Chen An to his waiting room, the staff member left, saying, “The show starts tomorrow. Dinner will be brought to you later—don’t wander off.”
Chen An smiled and nodded at the well-meaning reminder.
Once he confirmed he was alone, he lay on the bed and cursed the system in frustration.
Damn mission. If it weren’t for my eyes, I wouldn’t even be here.
By now, he had mostly figured out the system’s quirks.
Just showing up wasn’t enough—he had to do something to get the reward.
Seriously, if it tells me to check in on my wedding night, do I have to put on a performance for it too?
He shook his head just as a knock sounded at the door, followed by a voice.
“Chen An, hello. I’m here to record contestant information.”
Hearing this, Chen An sat up.
The door opened, and a sharp-looking woman in a professional suit and black stockings walked in.
“Hello, Chen An. I’m Li Jing. I’m here to brief you on the competition rules.”
Chen An nodded. He already had the basics down—the rest didn’t matter since he was just going through the motions.
Li Jing studied Chen An for a moment and sighed inwardly.
Such a naturally handsome guy… too bad he’s blind.
With her years of experience, she could tell his face was completely untouched—far better than those who’d had their noses and lips altered.
Collecting herself, she continued,
“You know there are three competition tracks, right?”
Chen An nodded, “I know.”
“These three tracks are open simultaneously, but they’ll be broadcast one by one during the official airing. So which track are you planning to choose?”
Hearing this, Chen An hesitated for a moment.
Luo Shiyu had advised him to choose the “Unique Brilliance” track, as it was the most favorable option for original contestants.
But if he wanted to be eliminated in the first round, he needed to put himself at a disadvantage.
He raised his head and said, “I choose the ‘Peerless Beauty’ track.”
