- Chapter 31 - Teacher, Sister
The next day, Gu Fei slept without a care in the world until nearly noon. She and Song Yanran had agreed last night to head out for mountain camping in the afternoon. However, when Gu Fei woke up, her wife was nowhere to be seen in the room. Fortunately, Song Yanran seemed to know she would worry and had left a sticky note on the bedside table.
Staring at the elegant, neat handwriting, Gu Fei unconsciously traced the words with her fingertip. It wasn’t just their living habits; even the handwriting of her wife’s different personalities had subtle differences. With a slight knit of her brow and a faint smile, Gu Fei glanced out the window. The heavy rain from last night had gradually ceased. Today was a clear, beautiful day—perfect for a date. Rubbing her messy hair, she walked toward the bathroom while calling the camping base to make arrangements.
While she was freshening up, Song Yanran had already arrived back at the hotel. As she placed the gift she bought into the trunk of Gu Fei’s car, she glanced at her empty bank balance. For the first time, she felt a sense of melancholy regarding how slowly she earned money. To buy this gift, Song Yanran had even withdrawn the money she previously kept in Gu Yi’s account; only then was it enough. She hadn’t touched the tutoring fee Gu Fei had transferred to her. She knew Gu Fei was just using a convenient excuse to give her money. Normally, she wouldn’t draw such a sharp line between them, but today’s gift was a token of affection she had prepared for several years. It was the first thing she was giving to Gu Fei. Even if it meant spending her entire savings, she didn’t regret it.
It was 4:00 PM by the time the two left the hotel. Gu Fei had pre-booked the best spot at the mountaintop camping base and arranged for all the essentials. They could head straight there. Carrying a handbag with their spare clothes, Gu Fei led Song Yanran toward the car. She was busy discussing whether it would be cold staying overnight on the mountain, completely failing to notice Song Yanran’s somewhat shifty and nervous gaze toward the trunk.
It wasn’t until Gu Fei stood at the back to load the luggage that she opened the trunk and discovered the white violin case lying quietly inside. Startled, she instinctively looked at Song Yanran.
“I… I really want to hear you play the violin again, Gu Fei. May I?”
Meeting her stunned gaze, Song Yanran’s expression turned slightly unnatural as she tightened her grip on Gu Fei’s hand. She knew Gu Fei hadn’t touched the instrument in a long time. During her last visit to the Gu family estate, she had seen Gu Fei’s violin with its broken strings in the music room. Aunt Sun had told her the last time Gu Fei played was years ago at her university graduation ceremony. Unfortunately, Song Yanran hadn’t had the chance to attend. However, she had managed to find an old video on the school’s official account. Seeing the relaxed expression on Gu Fei’s face in the video made Song Yanran feel as if she were seeing the young girl who used to play by the lakeside years ago.
“But I haven’t touched it in so long…” Gu Fei’s ears turned red with shyness under her wife’s expectant gaze. “Teacher, if you had told me earlier, I could have practiced…”
Despite having embarrassed herself numerous times during their tutoring sessions lately, Gu Fei still wanted to save a little face in front of her wife. Song Yanran leaned in and brushed her cheek against Gu Fei’s with a silent smile. “Are you going to refuse me then?”
Blinking, Gu Fei’s heart skipped a beat. Softening, she buried her face in Song Yanran’s shoulder and let out a low, laughing sigh. “If I don’t play well, you can’t laugh at me, Teacher… otherwise, you’ll face a very fierce punishment…”
Song Yanran glanced at the violin case, then met Gu Fei’s eyes with a look of bashful hesitation. “As long as it’s not on the mountain… anything is fine.”
“…Alright.” Gu Fei, who hadn’t originally meant it that way, suddenly felt a surge of interest.
The evening breeze on the mountain was refreshing, especially after the rain; every breath felt like pure, crisp air. After dinner, they tidied the utensils, and under her wife’s expectant gaze, Gu Fei took the violin from the car. Despite having performed in front of people many times since childhood, Gu Fei felt a wave of nerves facing Song Yanran’s gentle gaze. Under the cold moonlight, they stared at each other in silence. At this moment, she had a strange sensation—as if she had met her wife a long, long time ago. But when she tried to recall it, her mind was a blank. Only Song Yanran’s calm, soft gaze remained fixed on her.
As her hair fluttered in the night wind, Gu Fei slowly lowered her eyes and played the first note. Muscle memory took over. Even after a long hiatus, once she truly started playing, she became immersed in the music. When the piece ended, she returned to Song Yanran’s side, looking a bit shy.
“It was beautiful,” Song Yanran praised softly, leaning her head on Gu Fei’s shoulder. “Can you continue to play for me in the future?”
“I can.” Blushing, Gu Fei wrapped her arm around her wife’s waist. They sat in front of the tent, huddled together, watching the moon and stars. Eventually, as the temperature dropped, Gu Fei led her wife back inside the tent. Perhaps because she had slept all day, Gu Fei wasn’t sleepy at all. They lay side-by-side on the soft air mattress, admiring the night sky through the stargazing window and whispering sweet nothings.
When Song Yanran whispered a soft phrase into her ear, Gu Fei’s hand, which had been idly playing with her wife’s fingertips, paused. With a flush on her face, she mirrored Song Yanran’s shy but tender gaze. She leaned into Song Yanran’s ear and repeated the pronunciation she had just heard. It was a very short sentence, likely the most accurate pronunciation Gu Fei had managed since starting her tutoring lessons. Although Song Yanran had initiated it, she couldn’t help but close her eyes, her face turning a deep shade of crimson when Gu Fei responded.
With a twinkle in her eyes, Gu Fei watched her wife’s embarrassed face and playfully repeated the phrase several more times. Just as Song Yanran, red-faced, tried to cover Gu Fei’s mouth, Gu Fei caught her hand. Gently and slowly, she whispered a new romantic phrase into her ear. However, despite her slow pace, Gu Fei’s tongue tripped awkwardly halfway through. At that exact moment, Song Yanran opened her eyes. As they locked eyes in silence, Gu Fei’s face exploded in a blush. Had she known, she wouldn’t have tried to show off her new foreign language skills. Now she had embarrassed herself again.
Mortified, she buried her face in her wife’s arms and pulled the thin blanket up until her entire head was covered. Song Yanran let out a silent laugh. Though she was still shy, she gently pulled the blanket back to comfort Gu Fei. In the quiet space, she whispered the full romantic phrase Gu Fei had been trying to say back into her ear. When Gu Fei tentatively opened her mouth to practice silently, Song Yanran watched her. With flushed ears, she lowered her gaze and proactively captured Gu Fei’s tongue.
“I’ll teach you…”
The next morning, Gu Fei was woken up by a cold sensation against the crook of her neck. Opening her eyes dizzily, she saw the person beside her—Gu Yi—smiling at her. Gu Fei instinctively smiled back, caught the hand at her neck, and kissed the palm.
“Teacher, good morning…”
“Why are you calling me Teacher? Call me Sister.” Gu Yi propped her head up on one hand, arching an eyebrow, and gently pinched Gu Fei’s cheek.
“…Sister.” Gu Fei followed her lead and changed her address immediately, though her brain was still a bit foggy. She turned on her side to face Gu Yi. With a slight smirk, Gu Yi used her fingertip to pull aside Gu Fei’s collar, her gaze lingering suggestively. “Did you two not do it last night?”
Gu Fei’s face flushed instantly, and she was speechless. It wasn’t until Gu Yi’s hand began to slide down toward her collarbone that Gu Fei shook her head, blushing. “No…” She and Teacher Song had only kissed and touched last night.
“Oh…” Gu Yi let out a light laugh and glanced outside the tent. “Is it because Song Yanran is too inhibited? She can’t handle doing it in the wilderness… mmm.”
“Sister, Sister!” Gu Fei quickly covered her wife’s outspoken lips, then reflexively let go as her ears turned red from the moist, itchy sensation against her palm. With a lingering smile, Gu Yi reached out and pulled Gu Fei up. “Watch the sunrise with me.”
“…Oh.” Still a bit dazed, Gu Fei wrapped the thin blanket around both of their shoulders. When Gu Yi turned to look at her, she explained in a low, blushing voice, “It’s cold…”
“Baby, hold me tighter.” Gu Yi’s voice was soft and seductive as she leaned back lazily, relying entirely on Gu Fei’s embrace. With a crimson face, Gu Fei tightened her hold. Together, they quietly admired the sunrise. A few minutes passed, and while Gu Fei was still immersed in the beauty of the moment, she heard Gu Yi’s gentle, amused voice.
“Baby, you’re so soft.”
Gu Fei, who was rarely teased like this, turned bright red. After a moment of hesitation, she shyly returned the compliment. “Sister is very soft, too.”
Gazing at the rising sun, Gu Yi’s lips curled. “You know that even without touching?”
Gu Fei leaned in and whispered into her ear, “Last time at the bar, I helped Sister with a massage…”
Pleased with the answer, Gu Yi’s brow twitched playfully. She had thought Gu Fei might have mistaken her identity that night. A good girl who answers correctly deserves a reward. Under the cover of the blanket, Gu Yi reached up and grasped Gu Fei’s hand, which was wrapped around her waist.
“Massage Sister again.”
“…Okay.” Gu Fei shifted her gaze toward the scenery, her ears burning.
“Baby, don’t use so much force.” Noticing Gu Fei’s racing heartbeat, Gu Yi teased her intentionally. “If you leave a mark and Qin Qingwei finds out, how will you explain it?”
Gu Fei, now so embarrassed that her head felt like it was steaming, buried her face in the crook of her wife’s neck. “Sister, my strength is very light…” she explained softly. Hearing Gu Yi’s light laughter, she realized she was being teased. Shifting her eyes, she looked at the sun and negotiated quietly, “Sister, we should head back.”
“Don’t be in such a hurry. There’s still one thing left to do.” Gently covering her hand, Gu Yi turned and kissed Gu Fei’s jaw. “Did you bring the finger cots?”
“…I did,” Gu Fei responded, her heart thumping as she realized what was happening.
“Then come inside, baby.” Hooking her arm around Gu Fei’s neck, Gu Yi lightly nipped at Gu Fei’s fingertip. “You won’t refuse me this time, will you?”
