- Chapter 71 - Extra Two (Modern)
Mu Ling woke up to an overwhelming cacophony around her.
It wasn’t the bustling clamor of a cultivation world, but rather the mechanical roar of modern society, A sound she had long forgotten.
Mu Ling opened her eyes in disbelief.
Was she dreaming?
She glanced around and found herself atop a high-rise building. Across from her, a high-definition billboard flashed an advertisement featuring a beautiful celebrity endorsing skincare products. It was rush hour, and the streets below were clogged with traffic, a shimmering river of cars stretching far into the city’s horizon.
Mu Ling took a deep breath and was about to pinch her arm to check if she was dreaming when a sigh sounded behind her. A pair of arms wrapped around her waist, and a voice laced with deliberate grievance whispered, “Master, I brought you back to your time. Are you happy? Won’t you acknowledge me.?”
Mu Ling turned around with a complicated expression to face Yan Qi, who was still dressed in the flowing robes of the immortal realm, starkly out of place against the modern backdrop.
She hadn’t expected Yan Qi to bring her back to the modern world.
For the past month, Mu Ling had been deliberately cold-shouldering Yan Qi, planning to wander freely before eventually reconciling. But she never imagined waking up to find herself transported back to the modern era by Yan Qi.
Cultivators didn’t possess the ability to traverse time and space. Only one kind of being could freely cross dimensions. Mu Ling recalled the legends of gods.
In an instant, she understood: Yan Qi was revealing her true nature to her.
Mu Ling had known Yan Qi’s cultivation was extraordinary, but she hadn’t realized it had reached this level.
Meanwhile, the woman in question showed no awareness of her own godly status or perhaps she was feigning ignorance as she widened her enchanting eyes and stared curiously at the traffic below.
“Master, is this where you grew up?”
“How strange. There’s not a trace of spiritual energy, yet these boxes can move.”
Mu Ling gritted her teeth at Yan Qi’s exaggerated curiosity but finally hissed, “Cast an invisibility spell on us right now!”
If there were surveillance cameras on this building, and people discovered two figures appearing out of thin air on the rooftop, Mu Ling didn’t even want to imagine the consequences.
Still, she had to admit: returning to the modern world filled her with joy.
Under the cover of the invisibility spell, the two moved through the city, weaving between towering modern structures.
Mu Ling first returned to her old home.
Another year had passed in this world. With no relatives left except her uncle, her assets had naturally been inherited by his family. Given her aunt’s temperament, Mu Ling had assumed her house would have been sold off after her “death.” To her surprise, her room was impeccably preserved, clearly maintained by someone over the years.
Mu Ling had no intention of probing her uncle’s feelings after her disappearance. She went straight to her room, retrieved a metal box from beneath the wardrobe, and took out the few thousand yuan she had saved from part-time jobs during her student days.
This money had originally been set aside for a graduation trip with her grandfather. She never thought she’d have a chance to use it again.
After taking the money, Yan Qi headed straight for the flower shop at the entrance of the neighborhood.
The flower shop had already closed for the day, but Mu Ling had once worked there part-time and knew some flower-arranging techniques. After skillfully wrapping several bouquets of chrysanthemums, she placed the money in the shop’s drawer, then turned and handed the flowers to Yan Qi. Together, they made their way to the cemetery on the outskirts of the city.
Yan Qi followed silently behind Mu Ling.
Despite having weathered countless storms, Yan Qi felt an inexplicable tension rise in her heart as she observed Mu Ling’s expression at this moment.
They traversed the city together, gradually leaving the clamor behind until they reached a field dotted with tombstones. Mu Ling wove through the graves, large and small, before finally stopping in front of a few particular headstones.
These tombstones stood together, each bearing strikingly lifelike black-and-white portraits clearly a family. Yan Qi studied the images, noting the advanced artistic skill of this world’s people. Upon closer inspection, one of the portraits bore an uncanny resemblance to Mu Ling.
Just as Yan Qi was about to examine it more carefully, she heard Mu Ling softly call out, “Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, Mom, I’ve brought my beloved to see you.”
This was the first time Yan Qi had heard Mu Ling refer to her as ‘beloved,’ yet it felt utterly natural, as though this was exactly how Mu Ling should address her. Still, Yan Qi’s heart burned with an uncontrollable warmth. Straightening her back instinctively, she placed the flowers before the tombstones and knelt beside Mu Ling.
“I’ve always wanted to bring her to meet you all. I never imagined this dream would come true today.”
“Her name is Yan Qi, also known as Zhao Wuyou or Lin Qingge. She’s… quite a handful. She’s petty, vindictive, narrow-minded, paranoid, and occasionally loses her temper, driving me up the wall.”
As Mu Ling listed her flaws one by one, Yan Qi pressed her lips tighter together, even feeling the urge to cover Mu Ling’s mouth. But before she could act, Mu Ling continued, “But she’s also the person who loves me most in this world.”
Under Yan Qi’s gaze, Mu Ling’s face flushed slightly, yet she pressed on with the words she’d been rehearsing all the way here: “I love her too. Every day with her has been filled with happiness.”
“We’ll walk this path together, and I want you to know I’m truly happy.”
That evening, through Mu Ling’s murmurs, Yan Qi learned every thought and feeling Mu Ling had carried over the years. She also understood this was Mu Ling’s unique way of showing tenderness: despite Yan Qi having upset her recently, Mu Ling still remembered to soothe Yan Qi’s restless, fearful heart. The heart that always worried Mu Ling might disappear.
The city’s night wind was scorching, carrying a searing heat that swept into their hearts. At that moment, Yan Qi felt as though some barrier within her had shattered. She had intended to appear composed before Mu Ling’s family, yet somehow, tears began to flow unbidden.
“Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, Mom,” Yan Qi echoed Mu Ling’s words, carefully addressing these unfamiliar titles. Holding Mu Ling’s hand, she solemnly kowtowed before the tombstones. “Please rest assured in this lifetime, I will never fail Mu Ling.”
…
The two lingered in the cemetery for a long time. It wasn’t until Yan Qi repeatedly promised to bring Mu Ling back for future visits that Mu Ling reluctantly left the graveside with her.
Belonging to different dimensions, Yan Qi’s divine power could only sustain their presence in this world for a single day at a time.
With plenty of time before their return, they made their way to the highest point of the city. In Yan Qi’s world, the tallest structures were the mountains born of heaven and earth. But in Mu Ling’s world, the highest things were the skyscrapers piercing the sky. As Mu Ling enthusiastically described the city’s sights, the morning sun gradually rose. Watching Mu Ling’s vividly clear features in the dawn light, Yan Qi became increasingly certain that Mu Ling was a gift of luck and salvation bestowed upon her by the heavens. Bringing someone from such a different world right before her eyes.
As the sun climbed higher, the city awoke from its slumber.
The streets grew busier with cars, children hopped hand-in-hand across the road, and breakfast shops of all kinds opened for business.
Catching the fragrant aroma of food, Mu Ling spotted a certain white-bearded fast-food restaurant nearby. She pulled Yan Qi along, disguising them as ordinary modern people, and ordered a family bucket and two sundaes.
Yan Qi was still frowning over the “indecent” modern clothing that exposed arms and legs when Mu Ling held a strangely fragrant, golden stick to her lips. Under Mu Ling’s expectant gaze, Yan Qi reluctantly took a bite of the french fry.
Five minutes later, Yan Qi was calmly eating a sea salt sundae and meticulously dipping fries into ketchup. Despite it being the most ordinary fast food, she made it look like a gourmet French meal. But Mu Ling knew Yan Qi’s true nature. If she didn’t genuinely like something, she wouldn’t take a single extra bite.
The once ruthless Demon King actually had a soft spot for fries and sundaes. The thought alone made Mu Ling want to laugh.
But fearing Yan Qi’s embarrassment, she suppressed her amusement, nibbling on fried chicken while pretending to casually observe their surroundings.
The fast-food restaurant was packed with children.
Listening to their chatter, Mu Ling belatedly realized today was actually Children’s Day.
As the kids excitedly babbled, a thought suddenly struck Mu Ling. It hadn’t seemed significant before, but now it felt profoundly true: When you’re with someone you love, you want to celebrate every holiday together.
Watching Yan Qi with traces of sundae at the corner of her lips, Mu Ling smiled faintly. In some ways, Yan Qi really did act like an immature elementary schooler.
Why wait for another day? Might as well celebrate the holiday with this “schoolkid” Yan Qi right now!
……
Yan Qi had no idea what Mu Ling was thinking.
She only knew that, perhaps because they had returned to her homeland, Mu Ling’s smile was especially radiant. After finishing their decent breakfast, Mu Ling took her to a nearby shop where they bought matching couple outfits. Though Yan Qi had already grown accustomed to this world’s revealing fashion, she deliberately feigned reluctance, only agreeing to change after coaxing a few kisses from Mu Ling “grudgingly” putting on the same outfit.
Mu Ling then bought two sweet drinks from a gaudily decorated place called a “bubble tea shop” before leading Yan Qi to an amusement park.
The park wasn’t very crowded.
Yan Qi didn’t understand why Mu Ling was so happy, and the way she looked at her was somewhat strange; filled with an unusual tenderness, different from her usual shy and reserved demeanor. This gaze felt more like doting affection.
Mu Ling muttered, “Elementary school kids these days don’t even get Children’s Day off!” while dragging Yan Qi through every amusement park ride.
The day went perfectly, except for the moment in the haunted house when Yan Qi nearly summoned her spirit sword to slash the unfortunate staff member. Despite Yan Qi’s efforts to maintain her usual icy composure, the joy sparkling in her beautiful eyes betrayed her happiness.
Time flew by, and night soon fell. The two ended their day on the Ferris wheel.
Soft love songs played inside the cabin, and beside her sat the love of her life. As the day drew to a close, at the highest point of the Ferris wheel, Mu Ling gazed at Yan Qi now adorned with a cute hairband and clutching a handful of lollipops, looking utterly unlike her usual self and leaned in to kiss her lips.
She wanted to give Yan Qi the childhood she had missed.
The city sprawled beneath them, bathed in shimmering lights as everything around them blurred. Mu Ling knew she would soon return to the immortal realm.
The love song in the cabin crooned softly: “To love someone is to become utterly childish, with every thought and glance filled with them.”
“Happy Children’s Day!”
The world rapidly receded as Mu Ling heard herself whisper, “Though we are both monsters destined to live for millennia, as eternal as the heavens.”
But in Mu Ling’s heart, Yan Qi would always be the one and only little one she wanted to cherish forever.
