Marry First, Love Later With The White Cat Princess - Chapter 19
Upon hearing the title “Heavenly Doctor,” the accountant immediately turned pale, scrambled to the ground, and repeatedly kowtowed to Liu Fenyun: “I dare not! How could I possibly offend the senior disciple of the Heavenly Doctor! The Heavenly Doctor is one of the few top doctors in the world! I-I just didn’t know…”
Liu Fenyun did not expect her master’s title to be used in such a way. While she was dazed by the kowtowing, Luo Binglun said, “Now that you know, it’s not too late. Go back to your small herbal shop in the outer city. You are forbidden from entering the inner city for the next three years.”
The accountant was completely panicked, his whole body weak, yet he continued begging: “High Priest, forgive me! I have an elderly parent and young children; please don’t do this, High Priest!”
“Leave.”
As soon as Luo Binglun’s words fell, two strong male disciples entered from behind and escorted the accountant out, one on each side.
Only after the accountant’s cries faded did Liu Fenyun regain her senses, clutching the herbal bundle in her hand.
Although the High Priest’s power is second only to the ruler, and a single command could decide life or death, this seemed excessively severe…
She silently placed fifty three taels of silver on the table. As she considered whether to greet Luo Binglun, she heard the latter ask, “Liu Gongzi, have you been comfortable living in the Saintess Hall?”
“Comfortable. Your Highness treats me very well,” Liu Fenyun replied with a smile, remembering Lianyi’s “advice,” though her heart was uneasy.
If the High Priest personally sought her out, it was surely not for anything good.
She obediently held the herbal bundle, waiting for Luo Binglun to continue.
“Are you used to gathering herbs at the Materia Medica Hall?” Luo Binglun asked again.
Liu Fenyun roughly guessed what was coming and replied calmly, “I am.”
“Since you are accustomed, you may now go and receive your doctor’s identification plaque.” Luo Binglun handed her a letter. “Here is your master’s personally written letter.”
Liu Fenyun: ???
Why is her master sending another letter? To suddenly be promoted from herbalist to doctor doesn’t rely on skill alone but on a personal letter? That’s just unfairly overpowered!
This is an impossible scenario under normal circumstances. Her master would surely know better! Moreover, her master has always been strict about her medical training and would not go out of her way to pave the path for her.
The thought “High Priest forged my master’s personal letter” flashed through Liu Fenyun’s mind, making her even more anxious. Nevertheless, she accepted the letter, thanked Luo Binglun, and carefully placed it in her inner pocket without opening it.
Rushing back to the Saintess Hall, the moment she stepped into the main hall, Liu Fenyun smelled a rich sweet aroma, reminiscent of a bakery.
Since Lianyi had seen her memories, she had developed an interest in the foods from Liu Fenyun’s hometown. Coincidentally, Liu Fenyun enjoyed making various pastries. Lianyi had written some recipes for her to experiment with, though whether she could successfully replicate them depended on the Saintess Hall’s baking equipment.
The aroma was quite accurate, though the final appearance remained uncertain.
When Liu Fenyun returned, Lianyi was tasting freshly fried donuts, her fingertips and the corners of her lips coated in a thin layer of sugar.
Lianyi actually disliked going to the pharmacy. After watching Liu Fenyun gather herbs for three days and finding it boring, she chose to stay in the Saintess Hall, study the hometown recipes, and instruct the cooks to make them.
“Try it.” Lianyi handed Liu Fenyun the remaining half of a donut. “Does it taste like your hometown’s version?”
Liu Fenyun sat across from her, looking down at the donut.
Although it was a common treat back home, it made her heart ache.
She nibbled the outer layer, savoring the honey and sugar, then took a bigger bite. She nodded, “Very similar.”
Lianyi clapped her hands in delight. The attendant brought another plate of donuts, enticingly fragrant.
“Eat more.” After dismissing the attendant, Lianyi licked her sugar-coated fingers, watching Liu Fenyun eat. “I asked the cooks to make plenty some plain, some with cream. Eat as much as you like.”
Liu Fenyun quietly acknowledged, chewing the donut.
After finishing the sugar, Lianyi noticed the herbal bundle. Her brows furrowed: “Where did you gather these herbs?”
“From our family’s Materia Medica Hall,” Liu Fenyun teased for once.
“Lying.” Lianyi snatched the bundle, sniffed it, “These are from the Imperial Materia Medica Hall. How much silver did you spend?”
Liu Fenyun truthfully stated the amount. Seeing Lianyi frown deeper, she hurriedly added, “It’s the last time. Next time I’ll gather from home!”
She needed to compare herbs to cultivate seeds for the upcoming medicinal garden system.
After coaxing Lianyi for a while, the small cat demon finally said, “Don’t do it again,” then leaned closer, sniffed, and her expression darkened. She yanked Liu Fenyun’s outer robe and, in a few swift motions, pulled a letter from her chest.
“This letter smells of Luo Binglun.” Lianyi shook the letter. “Did your master send it again, or was it passed through her?”
“Maybe it’s from my master…” Liu Fenyun said uncertainly.
“Or maybe not?” Lianyi countered.
“Actually, I suspect this letter was forged by Luo Binglun.” Liu Fenyun didn’t need to hide it in front of her. “I know my master too well she isn’t this concerned about my future, even if I’m her top disciple.”
She opened the letter and read it with Lianyi.
“Hmm, judging by the handwriting, it doesn’t seem like Luo Binglun wrote it. The style also doesn’t match.” Lianyi propped her chin. “Do you think it’s your master’s writing?”
Liu Fenyun thought it looked similar. However, the system detected abnormalities in the ink’s dryness, forcing her to become nervous.
After a moment of thought, Liu Fenyun asked, “What if I say it doesn’t match?”
“Then the letter will remain in the Saintess Hall,” Lianyi replied, taking it away. “You are no longer a doctor in Liuzhi Kingdom. Everything you do is up to yourself. Your ‘Heavenly Doctor’ master is just a human she can’t reach so far.”
She paused. “Moreover, if the letter was truly forged by Luo Binglun, she might start targeting you.”
Liu Fenyun was terrified. “What?! Why would she…”
There were still attendants nearby, so the words “kill me” remained unspoken.
Lianyi guessed her thoughts, shook her head, crushed the letter, and led her to the bedchamber. Then she asked, “Is your master always a woman in disguise?”
Liu Fenyun nodded. She had served Yu Qingyue for many years, and with the system recording character information, her master’s gender was certain.
“According to Zhuohuang Kingdom’s laws the Fire God Doctrine same sex relationships are forbidden and cannot result in marriage.” Lianyi explained, “Priests and Saintesses may have spouses or lovers, but if the spouse is the same sex, execution is mandated.”
Liu Fenyun’s heart sank.
She suddenly realized the immense risk Lianyi had taken to conceal her gender.
