Shi Zizhuo has been reborn.
The first thing he does after rebirth is personally carve his face to resemble his past self.
In his previous life, he was Jing Si, a carefree prince who spent his days hawking falcons, raising hounds, and living in drunken pleasure—never offending anyone.
On the first day of the twelfth lunar month, as snow heralded a prosperous year and families rejoiced, he was murdered in his sleep, alone and forgotten.
He hated it bitterly.
Now, given another chance, he vows to make the dead restless in their graves and to tear his surviving enemies limb from limb.
He also longs for peace, sweet dreams and safe sleep.
With this face identical to the prince’s, Shi Zizhuo becomes a Jin Yiwei (imperial secret police) spy planted in the virtuous prince’s manor, where he meets his former self.
The manor is unchanged, but his past self is still unrestrained. At their first meeting, Jing Si teases: “How fierce are you? Take it off and let me see.”
Shi Zizhuo, conflicted: “…I never knew you had such a kink.”
A newcomer arrives at the prince’s manor.
This newcomer carries himself with more authority than the prince himself, his eyes dark and sinister beneath a mask, and the prince indulges him.
They eat, sleep, and revel together, showered in favor.
But later, someone sees the prince caught in a rain of arrows, while the newcomer shields him, dagger pressed against the prince’s heart.
“Kill me and claim your reward?” the prince laughs.
“Or… die with me?”
That winter, the plum blossoms bloomed beautifully in the manor. Indoors, warmth filled the chambers.
Within embroidered quilts, Jing Si caressed Shi Zizhuo’s face, teasing, even as his hand gripped his throat—
“Today, king upon king, I finally know myself within myself.”
