Marry First, Love Later With The White Cat Princess - Chapter 16
Liu Fenyun had a system from a higher dimensional plane. Developing new medicine wasn’t actually difficult, but the main ingredient for a special effect medicine wasn’t an ordinary herb it was rare and unpredictable. However, with Xian Lihua’s help, perhaps it could be attempted.
Considering that Lianyi couldn’t drink bitter medicine, and wanting her to regain her health as soon as possible, Liu Fenyun planned to start developing the medicine right away.
Before Xian Lihua returned, Liu Fenyun drafted the prescription in the system, adjusted the dosages, and wrote the main ingredient on a piece of white silk, sealing it into a brocade pouch for Xian Lihua to carry conveniently.
By candlelight, Liu Fenyun turned her head and saw Lianyi standing beside her, curiously watching her prepare the prescription.
“This is Your Highness’s new medicine,” Liu Fenyun said with a smile. “Some of the ingredients are hard to get. I’ll need Miss Xian to help later.”
After thinking for a moment, Lianyi said, “If Your Highness doesn’t mind my low salary, I’ll stay in the herbal medicine hall as a pharmacist and not attend to patients directly.”
Lianyi didn’t fully understand her meaning. Though she didn’t know medicine, she knew doctors held relatively high status in the country. If one gained fame, they could quickly rise in rank and become a favored court official.
By this reasoning, she felt her little prince consort should understand it better than she did.
“You won’t be a doctor anymore?” she asked.
“Not for now, until Your Highness fully recovers,” Liu Fenyun shook her head.
She had no lofty “save the world” ambitions. Besides, Lianyi had a sickly, possessive streak though Liu Fenyun didn’t yet know its extent. If Lianyi turned dark and harmed others because of her medical work, it would be safer to only treat her.
In the end, she couldn’t trust Lianyi quickly enough to believe she wouldn’t do something extreme for selfish reasons.
Yet, to Lianyi, Liu Fenyun’s words sounded like a pledge of loyalty.
Lianyi tested her cautiously: “What if I stay like this sick forever?”
Liu Fenyun could guess her little scheme and was about to reply with sweet words, when the sound of cat paws tapping the window interrupted her.
Xian Lihua had returned, carrying food boxes full to the brim. Upon entering, she sensed a strange atmosphere, set down the boxes and coins, and prepared to leave.
“Miss Xian, please wait!” Liu Fenyun hurriedly caught up, handing her the brocade pouch. “Please see if you can obtain these ingredients.”
Xian Lihua opened the pouch, glanced at the white silk, and nodded. “Give me seven days, Master Liu.”
“That’s fine,” Liu Fenyun smiled. She instinctively reached out to pat the cat’s head, but Xian Lihua dodged, quickly shoving the silk back into the pouch.
“Master Liu, respect yourself,” Xian Lihua whispered, her cat paw tapping the table before she leaped out the window and disappeared into the night.
Closing the window, Liu Fenyun tapped her own hand with complicated feelings.
Lianyi was extremely averse to her touching other cats why couldn’t she remember?
After seeing Xian Lihua off, Liu Fenyun turned and found Lianyi sitting by the table, not touching the food box, seemingly waiting for her to eat together.
Liu Fenyun was puzzled she couldn’t read this cat’s thoughts.
The food box opened, and the aroma of pork rib soup wafted up. Xian Lihua had actually prepared a bowl of yam and pork rib soup.
Liu Fenyun glanced at the returned coins, counting them carefully, unsure whether the soup had been purchased.
Fortunately, the bowl was engraved with the words “Night Wanderer,” a restaurant she had seen while wandering the outer city before. She could check with the owner when returning the bowl.
It was late, and since they would move houses the next day, Liu Fenyun didn’t serve too much rice, assuming Lianyi would sleep after eating.
In reality, they didn’t have much luggage. Every summer, Zhuohuang Kingdom held a Fire God Festival. Once summer arrived, Lianyi had to go to the Saintess Hall to practice the festival dance, and her tools were already prepared. Liu Fenyun only had a box of clothes.
Lianyi picked up her spoon, sipped the soup little by little, and ate some rice. Her stomach soon warmed up.
“Are you not tired, A Yun?” she suddenly asked.
Liu Fenyun was taken aback and shook her head.
Back in Liuzhi Kingdom, people would wake her at midnight to assist her master in house calls. As an apprentice, she had to go along. Year after year, she developed the habit of not sleeping deeply at night.
She slept soundly in the princess’s residence only because travel and marriage had exhausted her. Now, in the Grand Priest’s Shuoyue Pavilion, after yesterday’s poisoning incident, she couldn’t rest easily.
Seeing her shake her head, Lianyi didn’t ask more. She quietly finished her meal, wiped her hands, and touched Liu Fenyun’s forehead with a finger.
“Go to sleep. You’ve worked hard.”
Before Liu Fenyun could say “not hard,” her eyelids suddenly grew heavy, and she fell asleep at the table.
Having been pampered in the princess’s palace, Lianyi didn’t tidy the dishes. While Liu Fenyun slept, she finished the rest of the yam and pork rib soup, added another bowl of rice, and gently traced the words “Night Wanderer” on the bowl, deep in thought.
This was a restaurant Xian Lihua often visited. According to her, the owner seemed fond of her, and she liked staying by the owner’s side. But due to the Fire God sect’s strict prohibition of same-sex relationships and Zhuohuang Kingdom’s general hostility to demons, they could only care for each other quietly.
Lianyi’s lingering goodwill toward humans stemmed from how kindly the restaurant owner treated Xian Lihua. Their relationship had lasted nearly ten years.
After finishing her meal and unable to sleep, Lianyi paced behind Liu Fenyun.
She envied Xian Lihua. In a kingdom hostile to demons, finding a human friend to mutually care for each other was not easy.
These past few days, she had treated Liu Fenyun well, partly out of curiosity. But Liu Fenyun’s considerate care left her flustered, unsure if it was genuine or feigned.
With that in mind, Lianyi stopped behind Liu Fenyun, bent over, brushed aside her hair, and exposed her earlobe.
A leaf-shaped mark rested quietly at Liu Fenyun’s ear, giving Lianyi a sense of reassurance.
She lightly pinched the cool earlobe. Her fingertips unintentionally touched the mark, feeling heat it must be her demonic energy flowing through Liu Fenyun’s meridians.
With this mark, Liu Fenyun could borrow her demonic energy and spells, and Lianyi could control her through it.
If A Yun truly cared for her, she would treat her well in return. If she betrayed her, Lianyi could use her demonic energy to tear her apart, causing excruciating death.
With this thought, Lianyi closed her eyes and sent her spiritual consciousness into Liu Fenyun’s mind, reviewing her memories.
If someone was truly cunning, it was better to investigate than to test.
When the moon had set, Lianyi opened her eyes. Looking at Liu Fenyun, her gaze had softened considerably.
A Yun wasn’t from this world, and like herself, had no intention of possessing another’s body but had to live in someone else’s identity.
She realized they were kindred.
Lianyi moved Liu Fenyun to the bed, and summoned two cat demons, ordering them to move the prince consort’s belongings to the Saintess Hall overnight.
“Only one black lacquered box place it in the bedroom. Handle it carefully, don’t break it,” she instructed.
“Rest assured, Lady Lianyi! We’ve got it!” The plump orange cat patted itself and disappeared into the night with its companion.
