- Chapter 27 - Naga (10)
The heavy snow fell for five consecutive days before finally coming to a halt.
Jia’s injuries were mostly healed. Seeing that the snow had subsided, he led Qingshi out of the cave where they had been temporarily sheltering.
Qingshi sat on Jia’s shoulder. The snow was deep enough to reach Jia’s waist; had Qingshi tried to walk on his own, he would likely have been buried up to his chest.
Jia seemed to accurately recognize the direction within the vast, white world, heading out without the slightest hesitation.
Qingshi looked up at the grey, overcast sky. Faint snowflakes landed on his eyelashes, obscuring the bewilderment in his eyes.
What exactly was he now?
After traveling for several days, Qingshi’s supply of nutrient solution had long since run out. Jia was forced to stop and hunt. He could go many days without eating or drinking, but Qingshi could not.
The thick layer of snow completely smothered any trace of prey. Finding land animals in such conditions was impossible. Consequently, Jia found a thin patch of sea ice and shattered the floe, preparing to dive underneath.
Qingshi could not go into the water, so he remained on the ice to wait for him.
By today, the snow had completely stopped, but Qingshi sighed as he surveyed the unfamiliar snowy plains. He had no choice but to follow Jia. For him to attempt to find a way out of the vast Antarctic continent on his own would be nothing short of suicide.
Qingshi crossed his arms and looked into the distance when a sudden, rapid footstep sounded behind him.
“Who is there?” Qingshi turned abruptly. A familiar face came into view, and he gasped in surprise. “Meng Xi?”
Meng Xi ran up to Qingshi and reached out to grab his arm.
Qingshi shifted sideways to avoid the touch and asked, “How did you get here?”
Panting, Meng Xi awkwardly withdrew his hand and said, “Qingshi, leave with me first. I will explain everything later!”
Qingshi’s gaze swept over the ice hole where Jia had dove, then turned back to Meng Xi. “Alright.”
To Qingshi’s surprise, Meng Xi had brought a jet car. When the streamlined body of the vehicle shed its camouflage and was revealed, a flash of astonishment crossed Qingshi’s eyes.
“Get in the car!” Meng Xi climbed into the driver’s seat and pressed the switch for the rear door.
Qingshi entered without a word. Once the jet car ascended and was flying steadily, Meng Xi finally began to explain.
“Qingshi, you have no idea. After you disappeared, Bai Lin actually announced that he was taking over the base. I went to look for Vincent and the others, but I could not find a single familiar guard.”
“Later, an infectious disease broke out at the base. I only survived by hiding in the jet car with the environmental simulation turned on. That day, I saw Fuxi carrying you while being pursued by those infected people, so I took advantage of the chaos to escape the base.”
“I knew that if you were going to leave, you would definitely flee by sea. So, I drove the jet car along the coast to look for you. I did not expect Fuxi to be so fast; I lost your trail midway.”
“Then the heavy snow hit. It was not easy for me to find your tracks again.”
Qingshi looked at Meng Xi’s sincere and clear eyes through the rearview mirror. “Thank you. You have worked hard.”
“Oh, it was nothing,” Meng Xi waved his hand dismissively. “That old man Bai Lin said you were participating in a secret experiment at the time. Was that true? Or was it just a story he made up to control the base?”
His long eyelashes fluttered like butterfly wings. Qingshi could not help but recall every detail from the pitch-black confinement room. That chaotic helplessness, that searing heat, and the intersection of pain and pleasure.
“Qingshi?” Meng Xi called out when Qingshi did not respond for a long time.
His rounded fingernails left crescent marks in his palms as Qingshi forced himself to pull away from those unbearable memories. “It was true.”
Meng Xi keenly sensed that Qingshi’s mood was wrong, so he quickly changed the subject. “I see. Speaking of which, what are your plans for the future? The base is gone, and I do not know if the Council will hold anyone accountable.”
“The Council… Heh.” A cold arc appeared at the corner of Qingshi’s mouth, as if he found the word hilarious.
“Qingshi, what is wrong?” Meng Xi asked cautiously.
Qingshi lowered his eyelids, his thick lashes hiding the complex emotions in his eyes. “Nothing.”
“Um… why don’t you come back to the Main City with me? Antarctica is no good; it is cold, desolate, and dangerous.” Meng Xi looked at Qingshi’s expression in the rearview mirror and made the suggestion.
Qingshi looked out the window at the unchanging white landscape with an unreadable expression. “Fine. Let us go back.”
Meng Xi’s eyes lit up, and he said happily, “Great! We are going back!”
It was unrealistic to fly the jet car all the way back to the Main City as they did not have enough energy. Therefore, Meng Xi took Qingshi to the Antarctic port base: Hope.
The primary research at Hope Base was the extraction of Factor X. Its location was the outermost of the four bases. Every so often, ships from the Main City would arrive to transport the finished Factor X, and supplies for other bases would be transferred here.
“Qingshi, I have asked around. The next ship back to the Main City leaves this afternoon.” Meng Xi took out two tickets and handed one to Qingshi. “The jet car has the Dawn Base logo on it; we cannot take it with us. Let us leave it here.”
Qingshi took the ticket and nodded slightly.
Meng Xi leaned against the jet car with his hands in his pockets and let out a long sigh. “Time really flies. It has been five years. I wonder if the Main City has changed much.”
“You will know once you get back to see for yourself,” Qingshi said flatly, leaning against the vehicle as well.
“I am afraid you two will not be getting on that ship for the time being.” A raspy voice suddenly interrupted.
Members of the Hope Base guard team, fully armed and ready, surrounded the two men and the car. Dark muzzles were pointed at them as if the slightest movement would turn them into sieves.
Qingshi and Meng Xi both looked toward the leader of the group.
Meng Xi was the first to cry out in alarm: “Bai Lin?! How can you be here? No, what are you doing?”
“I have come to inspect my experimental subject,” Bai Lin said, pulling his mouth into a kind smile. “Captain Ji, it has been a long time.”
Qingshi bit his lip, his eyes burning with rage as he stared at Bai Lin.
Meng Xi stepped forward to shield Qingshi. “There are no experimental subjects here. Bai Lin, you have found the wrong place!”
“Heh, is that so?” Bai Lin laughed, his eyes fixed on Qingshi. “Captain Ji, have you seen my experimental subject?”
Qingshi clenched his fists, pivoted on his feet, and lunged toward Bai Lin. Even if he died today, he would take Bai Lin with him!
To his surprise, Bai Lin did not even try to dodge as Qingshi approached, and the surrounding guards did not fire.
Qingshi felt this was strange, but his fury had clouded his judgment, and he rushed forward regardless.
“Ugh!” Just as he got within a meter of Bai Lin, Qingshi’s head suddenly spun, and his limbs went weak. He let out a muffled groan and fell to one knee.
“Bai Lin, what did you do to Qingshi?!” Meng Xi was horrified to see Qingshi suddenly collapse. He tried to rush over to help but was stopped by two guards. “Damn it, get out of my way!”
Bai Lin reached out and gripped Qingshi’s chin, forcing his head up. Seeing those dilated blue eyes filled with pain, he laughed loudly. “Speaking of which, I have Researcher Meng to thank for his help.”
Meng Xi’s struggling stopped. “My help?”
Bai Lin: “Yes. Do you remember that tube of Factor X I handed to you?”
“You!” Meng Xi’s pupils shook. He remembered the last time he treated Qingshi at Dawn Base. When he went to the cold storage to retrieve the Factor X reagent, he ran into Bai Lin. That tube of reagent had not been taken out by his own hand; Bai Lin had handed it to him.
“Damn it! What did you do to it?!”
Bai Lin squinted and smiled, completely ignoring Meng Xi’s useless rage. “Just a little something to make Captain Ji more obedient.”
Qingshi closed his eyes and tried to wrench his chin from Bai Lin’s grip. He used too much force and collapsed sideways into the snow. His chaotic mind left him unable to focus on anything else; he could only curl up miserably.
Bai Lin looked down at Qingshi, folded his hands, and brushed off some nonexistent dust. “Take him back to my laboratory.”
Two guards stepped forward to lift the weak Qingshi.
“No! Bai Lin, what are you going to do? You cannot do this! How can you use Qingshi for experiments? Are you not afraid of the Council finding out!” Meng Xi shouted, trying to stop him.
Bai Lin sneered at his naivety. “It seems Captain Ji did not tell you what experiment he was participating in earlier.”
“What are you talking about?” Meng Xi was confused.
“It was a reproduction experiment involving Fuxi.” Bai Lin watched with pleasure as Meng Xi’s expression shattered upon hearing his words.
Meng Xi’s eyes went wide, his mouth open but unable to speak.
“Mr. Bai Lin, what should we do with this person?” one of the guards holding Meng Xi asked.
Bai Lin raised an eyebrow. “Lock him up for now. He came from Dawn Base, and we do not know if he is infected with the disease. We cannot let him escape.”
“Yes, sir.”
After an unknown amount of time, his chaotic mind finally stabilized. Qingshi opened his eyes to see the stinging white glare of fluorescent lights overhead. He moved his limbs and found himself strapped to a single-person experimental bed.
“You are awake.” He followed the voice to see Bai Lin, dressed in a white lab coat and wearing a mask.
Qingshi withdrew his gaze and stared blankly at the ceiling without speaking. He had nothing left to say.
Bai Lin smiled slightly and walked to Qingshi’s side. “Captain Ji, I just performed a blood test on you. Would you like to know the results?”
Qingshi closed his eyes, refusing to communicate.
“Haha, it seems Captain Ji already knows?” Bai Lin flipped through the report in his hand. “Your blood type is already approaching that of a Henos. I expect it will not be long before I can witness the birth of a Henos Naga with my own eyes.”
“I am looking forward to that day, Captain Ji.”
Then I am afraid you will never live to see it. Qingshi looked at him with disdain and sneered.
Bai Lin was completely indifferent to this insignificant resistance. “Captain Ji, there is something I have not yet obtained. Shall you do it yourself, or shall I give you a hand?”
Qingshi watched as the man’s gaze shifted down to settle on his abdomen. He bit his lip and spat, “Get out.”
“It seems Captain Ji is unwilling to cooperate. Then I shall have to offend you.” Bai Lin turned and took out a syringe filled with a dreamy purple liquid.
Qingshi tried to struggle, but the restraints were too tight. He could only watch as the purple liquid was slowly pushed into his body.
“Do not worry, Captain Ji. This is merely an aphrodisiac that is harmless to the body. You only need to release it.” Bai Lin finished the injection and explained with a smile.
