- Chapter 18 - Naga (1)
With a heavy mechanical whir, the three-meter-high silver-gray doors slowly slid open from the center, revealing a man clad in a silver-white nano-combat suit.
The tight-fitting suit outlined his lean, powerful physique, and the holster at his hip swayed rhythmically with his stride.
As a new recruit to the guard detail, Wu Feng was seeing the legendary Captain, who was frequently compared to the Antarctic glaciers, up close for the first time. Looking at the man’s frigid aura and sharp, chisel-like features, Wu Feng could not help but shiver. The rumors were indeed true.
As if sensing Wu Feng’s slight movement, a pair of sapphire-blue phoenix eyes snapped toward him. Terrified, Wu Feng held his breath, feeling like a rabbit caught in an eagle’s gaze.
“Reporting to the Captain! Collection Team 6 is fully assembled and awaiting orders.” Jiang Ming, the leader of Team 6, was a burly man nearly two meters tall, and his reporting voice was deafeningly loud.
Despite the gong-like sound booming in his ears, Qingshi’s expression remained unchanged. He gave a calm command: “Move out.”
“Yes, sir!”
Jiang Ming stepped forward to open the rear door of the vehicle for Qingshi. “After you, sir. This area has been fully disinfected.”
“Mhm.” Qingshi gave a slight nod and entered the vehicle, crossing his hands over his abdomen and closing his eyes to rest.
Jiang Ming shut the door and turned to address the nine team members still standing stiffly in place. “Don’t just stand there; get in the car!”
“Yes, sir!”
Forced to squeeze into a single vehicle with seven other teammates, Wu Feng could not help but ask, “The Captain’s car only has three people in it. Cannot two of us move over there?”
The teammate beside him smacked him on the back of the head. “You little brat, where do you think you would sit? On the roof?”
Wu Feng rubbed his head. “Does the Captain not have the whole back seat to himself?”
“Pfft, listen to this! This fearless kid actually wants to sit with the Captain!”
“Hahahaha!”
Confused by his teammates’ laughter, Wu Feng muttered, “What is wrong?” Was what he said really that funny? The Captain looked cold and ruthless, certainly, but surely they could share a car.
Lin An patted the newcomer’s shoulder with a knowing look. “Kid, the person capable of sitting next to the Captain has not been born yet.”
“Huh? Why?”
“Because,” Lin An loved teasing recruits, “the air within one meter of the Captain is cold enough to freeze you to death. Hahaha! If you have the guts, go ahead and try it.”
Recalling that piercing gaze from earlier, Wu Feng shook his head like a rattle.
Another burst of laughter erupted inside the car.
Two pale-white, streamlined vehicles slowly ascended on cushions of air, then flew in formation out of the massive silver-gray building.
“Welcome aboard the G29 Jet-Car. System Xiao Er at your service.”
“It is currently July 30, Star Calendar 4035, 07:55 AM. Your current location is the Antarctic of Blue Star. The outdoor temperature is -94.2°C. Please ensure you stay warm.”
886: Qingshi, am I not amazing? Hahaha, you are not blind this time!
Qingshi sighed inwardly. It would be even more amazing if he did not have to be sprayed with disinfectant countless times a day; he felt like he was being pickled.
Although this Captain, named Ji Qingshi, was not blind, he was a massive germaphobe. He despised close contact with others, wore gloves year-round, and had a full disinfection system installed in his quarters. Every entry and exit required a full-body scrub.
Qingshi thought to himself, “Will I be able to capture the Male Lead on this excursion?”
886: Exactly! This mission is too easy. Just capture him, take him back, and then, when he eventually tries to escape, provoke him so he whips you to death with his tail. Simple.
Qingshi replied, “Fine.”
886: Qingshi, you must treat him with a bone-chilling, ruthless attitude. Do not let a repeat of last time happen. Anyway, just be as mean as possible.
Qingshi answered, “Got it.”
Qingshi looked out the window at the vast, white world.
The technology of this world was very similar to his original world, so he adapted quickly. Compared to the struggles of the early stages of the previous ancient world, he felt like a fish in water here.
In the year 3018 of the Star Calendar, a massive cold wave hit Blue Star. Of the nine billion residents, fewer than one hundred million survived. These survivors banded together to create the current Federation Main City.
By Star Calendar 3028, ten years after the cold wave, not a single newborn had been born. After a series of tests, the Federation discovered that all the survivors had lost the ability to reproduce.
To preserve life, the Federation began investing in genetic experimentation.
In 3123, the first New Human with merged rabbit genes appeared; he possessed perfect jumping ability and speed.
Thus, Blue Star began its path of gene-splicing. These New Humans, fused with animal genes, became the backbone of the Federation, ushering in an era of rapid development.
However, in 3995, a strange disease broke out. Patients would initially become manic and destructive due to headaches, then become lethargic and eventually fade away, dying in their sleep.
Scientists discovered the gene maps of these patients were chaotic and named it Gene Collapse Syndrome. It was a terminal illness for New Humans, and the Federation fell into a state of panic.
In 4003, an earthquake in the Antarctic icy sea exposed the carcass of a one-hundred-million-year-old Line Turtle. Scientists extracted Factor X from it, which effectively slowed the progression of Gene Collapse. This discovery revitalized the Federation.
That same year, the Federation established four research bases in Antarctica: Dawn, Aurora, Hope, and Zenith. Each was located in a different quadrant and handled different research.
For instance, the Dawn Base, where Qingshi was stationed, researched whether ancient biological genes could be encoded to create even more powerful Neo-New Humans.
Due to its research focus, Dawn Base was the closest to the center of Antarctica and the most dangerous. The danger did not just come from the temperatures, but from the ancient beasts reawakened by geological activity.
These ancient overlords slept beneath thick ice, appearing as red dots on life-detection monitors. While Federation technology could not drill deep enough to extract them, geological shifts occasionally brought them to the surface.
As the Guard Captain of Dawn Base, Qingshi’s most important duty, besides daily operations, was to hunt these reawakened beasts and bring them back alive for the labs.
The Male Lead this time was one such beast: a Henos Naga named Fuxi, an apex predator from thirty billion years ago.
Jiang Ming stopped the car. “Captain, the system reports the last thermal signature vanished near here.”
“Land. Everyone out,” Qingshi ordered.
“Yes, sir!”
The two vehicles landed smoothly. Once the team disembarked, the mimetic coating on the cars activated, blending them into the snowy environment.
“Scout the perimeter in pairs. Report any findings immediately.”
“Yes, sir!”
Qingshi drew the heavy energy gun from his waist, loaded it with tranquilizers, and chose a direction to investigate alone.
Ji Qingshi was a New Human fused with falcon genes. His dynamic vision was dozens of times better than a normal person’s; even on a featureless ice sheet, he could spot minute clues.
For example, he spotted a snow fox that appeared and vanished a kilometer away.
Qingshi narrowed his eyes and walked toward where the fox had disappeared.
A blood-soaked snow fox pelt lay on the ground. Qingshi nudged it with his boot; the fur was still soft and fresh. He raised his gun and scanned the surroundings warily.
The sound of whistling air came from behind. Qingshi rolled across the ground, turned, and fired.
He missed.
However, he caught a clear glimpse of his attacker: a thick, dark-green serpent tail.
Qingshi thought, “A tail? Could it be the Male Lead?”
Qingshi stood his ground, every nerve taut as he monitored for movement.
There!
Hearing a faint sound to his back-left, Qingshi fired blindly in that direction.
The sound of a bullet hitting flesh followed. A hit!
He turned, but saw only a puddle of dark-green, fluorescent blood on the snow. He cautiously approached. The snow around the blood was trampled, showing clear signs of a struggle.
Ten, nine… Qingshi counted down internally while observing the area.
His gun was loaded with ten-times concentrated tranquilizer. A single dose could drop an adult mammoth. Taking down the Male Lead should be a breeze.
As he reached one, a massive entity suddenly burst from the snow near him. It rolled a few times before collapsing stiffly, motionless.
Qingshi sauntered over to admire this legendary amphibious overlord.
The creature’s upper body was larger and broader than an adult male Federation citizen, with defined abdominal muscles. His hair was deep black, draped messily over his body with bits of un-melted ice clinging to the tips. His features were exquisitely carved, surpassing even those fused with fox genes.
From the waist down, a dark-green serpent tail stretched out for about five meters. The scales were darker on the outside and lighter on the inside, with a vertical slit near the upper belly, which was likely the cloaca.
Qingshi rubbed his chin. Records suggested adult male Henos tails were usually three to four meters long. This Male Lead was clearly special.
He kicked the man’s shoulder. Confirming he was unconscious, Qingshi holstered his gun and keyed his communications.
“Hello, hello? Captain, what are your orders?” Jiang Ming’s voice crackled from the badge on his chest.
Qingshi: “I have sent the coordinates. Everyone, get over here.”
“Yes, sir!”
Just as Qingshi closed the channel and looked down, he met a pair of deep-green vertical pupils. His own pupils constricted. This was not good. He instinctively tried to back away, but before he could take a step, the supposedly unconscious Male Lead lunged, pinning him into the snow.
He had been faking it!
Seeing the Male Lead snap his jaws toward him, Qingshi threw up his left arm to block while reaching for his gun with his right.
Sharp canines pierced through the protective glove and sank into his wrist. Qingshi let out a muffled groan. His right hand failed to draw the gun as a wave of heat surged from his wrist through his entire body, leaving him suddenly paralyzed and weak.
Qingshi wondered, “What is this? I never heard about Heno’s teeth being venomous.”
After a moment, the Male Lead finally let go. He held Qingshi’s forearm, curiously inspecting the white glove, while his long, powerful tail coiled tightly around Qingshi’s legs.
Feeling his body failing him, Qingshi gasped for air. Gritting his teeth, he managed to wrench the gun from his holster and fired three consecutive shots into the creature’s abdomen.
The Male Lead seemed stunned by the sudden counterattack. He looked down at the wounds on his belly, but before he could react, the massive overdose of tranquilizer finally sent him back into a deep, unconscious stupor.
