- Chapter 9 - Fierce Dragon Crash-Landing
Lepa Town was not far from the Illidari Estate. Long Ling reached it in about two hours, riding in the carriage.
The town’s buildings were beautifully constructed, the streets were wide and tidy, and a bout of cool rain had just passed.
Red-brown hooves stepped onto the road, splashing the accumulated rainwater everywhere.
The carriage driver let out a short shout, bringing the two parallel chestnut horses to a stop.
Long Ling got out of the carriage, holding the land deed, and walked around the plot of land at 198 Main Street several times.
Why did the shops stop at 198? Where was her shop at number 199?
“Miss Long Ling, there are only these shops nearby. It doesn’t look like the tavern you’re looking for is here?”
The carriage driver was a short young man named Ul, who huddled in his jacket and bowed as he held an umbrella for Long Ling.
Long Ling looked around, a little suspicious that she had been tricked. Could it be that this was just a joke by her Clan Grandmother, and the land deed she held was fake?
“Wait for me here and keep an eye on the carriage. I’ll go ask around nearby.”
Ul tucked his neck and nodded. Seeing Long Ling about to venture out in the rain, he quickly shoved the umbrella into her hand.
“Miss Long Ling, please take the umbrella. It’s still raining outside.”
Long Ling opened the umbrella and walked into the drizzling rain.
She decided to check the nearby general store, as there were many people coming and going there, and she should be able to gather some useful information.
Several women in grey and black aprons were chatting outside the general store. When they saw Long Ling approaching, they quickly patted the dust off their clothes and left.
The aura of the Dragon Clan was very strong in this world. Even without wearing a cloaking cape, it was easy for other races to notice them.
Moreover, Dragons, when in human form, generally stood nearly two meters tall, making them very conspicuous among the surrounding crowd.
Long Ling had only recently come of age, and her current height was only 1.7 meters, but her Dragon Clan aura was very intimidating.
No one in this world dared to provoke the proud and dominant Dragon Clan, let alone a female Alpha of the Dragon Clan.
Long Ling touched the top of her head, confirming that her dragon horns were hidden. She didn’t know how others could tell she was different from ordinary people. Perhaps she should find a tailor to make her a black cloaking cape.
She walked into the general store, folded her black umbrella, and shook the rainwater off to the side, careful not to wet the goods in the store.
The light from the incandescent lamp shone down from the ceiling. The scarlet carpet at the entrance was dirty and old, and rows of wide, mottled shelves stood before her.
The store was crowded with customers, most of whom were selecting the goods they needed, while others leaned against the tall shelves, smoking cigars and bargaining with the clerk.
The shelves were filled with various items: cigarettes, fruits, candies, alcohol, and biscuits. On top of a stack of red apple wooden boxes, Long Ling even saw many different types of hunting rifles.
She had only seen this type of rifle once from a distance when she was in the Royal Palace and had never touched one. She had heard a palace maid beside His Majesty say that these firearms were tribute from the Western Regions and were very powerful; His Majesty could shoot a terrifying tiger with one shot.
Long Ling couldn’t help but stare at them curiously. The dark gun barrels gleamed with a cold light, looking like nothing more than ordinary iron chunks.
Something that could only be offered as tribute to the Emperor’s presence was now something she could purchase. Everything felt so within reach.
Beside the hunting rifles were various styles of bullets, differing in size and type. Small paper tags were attached next to the bullets, thoughtfully marking the corresponding rifle model for each bullet.
This was all new and fascinating to Long Ling—all good things she had never seen before.
To her right were sparkling silver fishing hooks and lures, and the low counter contained different styles of bait, with fishing nets and other equipment all in full supply.
The prices were quite high. These fishing tools cost dozens of silver coins easily, and the price of a rifle even reached over a thousand silver coins. And yet, her total savings were only five hundred silver coins.
She couldn’t afford it. Absolutely couldn’t afford it.
As Long Ling stood in front of the guns, the people around her gradually realized she was a dragon and couldn’t help but move away from her.
Some customers were so scared they turned pale, grabbed their items, and fled.
Just as Long Ling remembered she needed to ask the general store owner for directions, she turned around and suddenly met the resentful gaze of a middle-aged man with a receding hairline.
“Miss Dragon, may I ask if you need to buy anything?”
It turned out he was the owner of the general store.
Long Ling quickly replied, “Hello, I wanted to ask for directions. Is there a tavern nearby?”
The store owner’s eyes widened a bit, as if he had encountered something incredible.
Unlike the proud and self-obsessed dragons he had met before, this dragon was surprisingly polite, beautiful, and gentle and graceful in her manner.
The key point was that this dragon was actually asking him for directions! What in the world could possibly challenge the mighty Dragon Clan?
He suddenly felt that the customers he had unexpectedly lost were not a big deal after all.
The general store owner felt very honored and quickly bowed as he answered, “There is only one tavern nearby, but it’s quite a distance from here, next to the Misty Forest. However, it has been abandoned for many years. Not long ago, there was a heavy rainstorm, and the road was blocked by rolling rocks.
If you want to go, you can find some local dwarves to help you move the huge rocks and rebuild the road, then you can go to the tavern.”
Long Ling couldn’t help but purse her lips. If she hired dwarves and paid them to transport the rocks and fix the road, she would have to give them silver coins.
She was truly short on cash…
“Has that tavern been abandoned for many years?”
“Yes, about ten years or so. The former owner of the tavern died of an illness, and the tavern doors were locked. Later, I don’t know who it was sold to.”
“I see. Thank you. Could you please draw me a map of the route?”
The owner took a pale blue quill pen, dipped it in red ink, and drew out the route to the tavern.
Long Ling left the general store and looked at the new route on the map, along with the marked location of the fallen rocks. She felt a little discouraged.
She had originally thought it would be a large tavern in a busy area, which she could easily take over. She didn’t expect to encounter trouble right from the start. If she wanted the tavern to operate normally and transport goods, the road would first have to be repaired.
She would need to spend a lot more money. How was she going to find a way to earn it?
Ul saw Long Ling approaching and quickly stepped forward to ask, “Miss Long Ling, did you find the way to the tavern?”
Long Ling rubbed her forehead: “I found it. Go a little further, then turn right at the fork in the road, and continue until you reach a short house with a red tile roof.”
Ul quickly acknowledged her and helped Long Ling onto the carriage: “I’ll take you there right now.”
Long Ling got into the carriage and looked around the compartment she was now sitting in.
If she used this carriage to move the fallen rocks, the compartment would probably be a mess, and the wheels would be damaged.
More importantly, the carriage was borrowed from the Evil Dragon Miss. If she damaged the carriage, she would have to go and apologize and compensate the Evil Dragon Miss.
No, she couldn’t keep causing trouble for the Evil Dragon Miss; that would make the Evil Dragon Miss look down on her.
The carriage traveled over the uneven small road, getting bumpier and bumpier.
Ul’s driving sounds soon stopped, and he turned around in a flustered state to tell Long Ling, “Miss Long Ling, the road ahead is blocked by many fallen rocks.”
Long Ling got out of the carriage. The fallen rocks ahead spanned about a few hundred meters. Fortunately, they weren’t piled up particularly high. If they were to be moved manually, with the carriage driver following her, they would have to set up camp here after dark.
Is moving rocks more important, or serving the creditor well? A smart dragon knows how to choose.
She had learned a few techniques on how to use magic from other dragons in her former family, but she wasn’t sure what level her ability had reached. This was a perfect opportunity to test it out with the fallen rocks.
“You take the carriage and move farther away. I will clear these rocks.”
Ul quickly led the two chestnut horses and moved a little farther away.
On the continent of Aud, the Dragon Clan was the most dangerous species. Every dragon was born with immense strength, magical ability, and high intelligence, which ordinary humans simply could not compare to.
In the eyes of the human carriage driver, Miss Long Ling was the same as the Estate owner, Duchess Viyolotte—a dangerous and awe-inspiring race.
Long Ling took a deep breath, lightly touched her toes, and suddenly soared into the air. This was her first time transforming into her dragon form. Her dragon wings fully spread out behind her, cutting the cool rain around her, which flowed down the sharp bone spikes of her wings.
The enormous dragon wings seemed to block out the sky and sun. Just one light flap of her wings caused the grass and trees throughout the valley to tremble.
A small cloud of ice-blue dragon breath brewed within the silver dragon’s body. The moment it left her mouth, it instantly transformed into a ferocious hurricane. The massive, heavy boulders began to shake violently, and yellow dust was swept up into the air, forming a powerful storm.
Long Ling hadn’t expected herself to be this powerful!
Hehe, so from now on, can she be a bit bolder in front of the Evil Dragon Miss and not be so afraid of her?
However, it was said that the Evil Dragon Miss had once been a military officer, and as an Omega, no dragon in the military was her match. How could she even harbor thoughts of opposing the Evil Dragon Miss?
Long Ling reigned in her mischievous thoughts and continued to brew more ice-blue dragon breath within her body. As a large mass of dragon breath accumulated, an even larger hurricane surged from her mouth, instantly sweeping all the fallen rocks within a few meters over the edge of the cliff.
A rumbling muffled sound came from the bottom of the valley, and the residual snow on the mountain wall was also carried straight down by the terrifying ice-blue dragon breath, as if being shaved off by frozen wind blades.
The two fine horses whinnied in fright, and their hooves nervously backed away.
The carriage driver’s sheepskin hat was blown away, but he didn’t stop to pick it up, quickly pulling on the reins to soothe the restless horses.
Long Ling looked back and was relieved that the carriage driver was a skilled veteran and the two horses hadn’t bolted.
Half of the fallen rocks blocking the road had been cleared. All that was left was to sweep away the remaining rocks, and everything should be fine.
Long Ling looked down at the ground. The short trees looked like small pieces on a chessboard, seeming to spin.
Long Ling’s ice-blue pupils, which had been a single vertical slit, gradually became two blurry “X” shapes.
Should she flap her left wing first, or her right wing first when gliding down?
No, her head should go down first, with her wings spread open. And what about her dragon claws? Should she open those too?
A mighty and dominant silver-white ice dragon circled randomly in the sky a few times before starting a miserable, fierce dragon crash-landing.
Just a few meters from the ground, the silver-white dragon scales scraped against the dirt-yellow ground and hit the hard mountain rock. The smooth, beautiful scales instantly turned into a matte texture, emitting a sharp, metallic friction sound.
