- Chapter 68 - She Doesn't Love Me Anymore
Long Ling waited for several days, but Violet did not come. Her cloak, which had been left with Long Ling, had already been washed and dried.
She vaguely felt that what Violet had left behind wasn’t just a cloak, but a dog leash, tying her to this tavern.
Long Ling was now the tavern owner, but she didn’t need to stay in the shop every day.
Ever since Violet came to find her that night, Long Ling had been dreaming of Violet every night.
Too many dreams at night meant she was always drowsy during the day, so she couldn’t run around anymore and had to wait in the tavern for Violet to arrive.
It was just like before, when Violet kept her confined in the manor, and she had to wait for Violet to come home from work every day, like a small pet.
When Violet had time and remembered her, she’d take her out for a walk on a leash, and even ask her if she was happy.
Only Violet the dragon was happy, right?
The more Long Ling thought about it, the angrier she became. She pounded the neatly folded cloak several times to vent her anger, then carefully put the cloak back into the cloth bag.
When Violet came, she would immediately toss this packaged cloak to her, telling Violet to take her cloak and leave quickly, and never appear in front of her again!
Long Ling squeezed a large cup of watermelon juice. She bought the watermelon from the half-beasts near the Vane River. Since she no longer had a farm, these fruits all had to be purchased, increasing her monthly costs significantly. She even missed her hundred acres of strawberries a little.
Today, Mo Dai was coming to pick her up after work. The weather was a bit hot, so Long Ling planned to make some watermelon slush to quench her mother’s thirst. She bought the ice from a witch in the city. A large block of ice was inconvenient to use directly, so Long Ling used a sharp knife to shave it all into crushed ice for the slush.
Her dragon claws were not afraid of the cold. Her sharp claws pressed onto the ice, and the thin blade sliced downwards, cutting cleanly like shavings. The crunching sound as she cut was quite stress-relieving.
When Mo Dai arrived, she saw her daughter alone at the counter cutting ice. The ice was piled into a small mountain, almost burying Long Ling.
Mo Dai waved her hand in front of Long Ling’s eyes. Long Ling hadn’t noticed her mother’s arrival and was still busy cutting the ice.
Mo Dai walked to Long Ling’s side, a hint of worry in her eyes: “Xiao Ling.”
Only then did Long Ling snap out of it. Seeing her mother, a bright smile appeared on her face: “Mom, when did you get here?”
Mo Dai asked with confusion: “Just now. Why did you cut so much slush?”
Long Ling realized she had accidentally cut too much and quickly grabbed the insulated box used for storing ice, putting the extra slush inside: “It’s really hot. I wanted to make you some watermelon slush to drink.”
Mo Dai was touched by her thoughtful daughter. It had been a long time since she had eaten watermelon, and her precious daughter even specially made her watermelon slush to drink. Cutting so much ice, she was almost melted with sweetness even before drinking the slush.
Mo Dai’s eyes were full of love, and a mother’s affection began to well up: “Thank you, my precious daughter. Do you have enough pocket money? Mom will give you an extra box of gold coins every week from now on?”
Hearing that her mother wanted to increase her pocket money again, Long Ling quickly shook her head and said, “No need. The tavern I opened recently has already made a lot of money, and you’ve helped me so much too, Mom.”
Mo Dai looked at her daughter’s obedient and lovely appearance and couldn’t help but think that her original decision was right—she should have taken her daughter away from that Duke. Look how sunny and cheerful the little dragon was now.
Long Ling poured the squeezed watermelon juice into glass cups. The light-red watermelon slush carried the sweet scent of fruit. The translucent, cooling crushed ice was poured in, forming the shape of a snow mountain. She added a slice of lemon, inserting a light-green straw and a spoon.
Long Ling handed the watermelon slush to Mo Dai. As she made her own glass of iced watermelon slush, she remembered how Violet always drank red wine at the dinner table, while she drank lemonade.
She couldn’t quite remember the taste of the lemonade. She only remembered Violet’s noble eyes, which were still arrogant even when slightly tipsy. With just one glance, she couldn’t help but want to do anything for Violet.
Thinking this, Long Ling accidentally poured too much slush again and quickly cleaned it up.
Mo Dai couldn’t help but worry: “Xiao Ling, why have you been so listless these days?”
Mo Dai gently placed her warm hand on Long Ling’s forehead. She wasn’t sick, but she looked distracted.
Long Ling couldn’t hide her thoughts and couldn’t help but tell her mother: “Violet came to find me.”
Mo Dai frowned: “Why is she here again?”
Long Ling took a sip of watermelon slush, her gaze drifting: “It’s not ‘again.’ She hadn’t shown up for a long time. She suddenly appeared a few days ago when I was drinking in the tavern.”
Mo Dai immediately became alert: “Is she trying to drag you back to the manor again? Silly child, you can’t be soft-hearted! If she drags your back, she’ll keep bullying you!”
Mom was right, the Great Evil Dragon always bullied her. Everything about her now was a disguise. The Great Evil Dragon used to not only hit her butt with a staff but also deliberately transform her into a small dragon and press her onto her lap to bully her.
Long Ling became a little conflicted: “But… she said she would take care of me from now on and wouldn’t hurt me anymore. She looked so pitiful that day, and she was injured while chasing me. We were caught in the rain together, she gave me her cloak to wear, and when I left, she even…”
Mo Dai looked at Long Ling, who seemed to be troubled by love. Even though she was physically here, her heart and soul had been captivated by Violet. That simply wouldn’t do.
She rubbed Long Ling’s head: “Go out and clear your head. My precious child is still too young and has seen too few Omegas. Maybe you’ll forget her after meeting more people.”
Long Ling lowered her head: “I don’t know where to go. Her cloak is still with me. If she comes, I have to return it to her.”
Mo Dai finally understood why Long Ling was kept in the manor by Violet before. She was too obedient. Violet leaving a cloak here was enough to keep Long Ling tied down. If this continued, her little dragon would be sweet-talked away again in a few days.
“Mom will take you to another city to play. Leave the cloak right here on the counter. When Violet comes, let the tavern staff give it to her. We won’t see her anymore. Every time she comes and finds you, she becomes more reckless.”
Long Ling thought about it carefully; her mother’s words made sense. She wasn’t Violet’s pet dog. Violet shouldn’t be able to find her whenever she remembered her, and she shouldn’t always be available if Violet wanted to come back. Was she really such a cheap dragon?
She stood up, no longer drinking her watermelon slush, ready to pack up and go out with her mother to relax.
Mo Dai couldn’t help but laugh at her impatience: “Finish your watermelon slush before you go. What’s the rush?”
Long Ling scratched her head in embarrassment and sat down with her mother to eat the watermelon slush.
Long Ling slowly drank for a long time, then meticulously washed the glass cups. No sound of horse hooves appeared on the street outside.
Violet probably wouldn’t come today.
She still needed to pack the things she needed to take with her. She left the tavern with her mother and headed to the manor outside the city.
They were going to the City of Freedom this time, which was a gathering place for dragons but didn’t have the same strong hierarchy as the Aud Continent, nor did it have a king. Many dragons chose to settle there.
Coincidentally, Grandma and Mo Dai had agreed last time to get the aunts out to work, so Mo Dai was bringing two of her sisters, and Long Ling had also asked an aunt to help her look after the shop.
Since they had to pass through the Misty Forest, Long Ling thought of Eloriel and went to ask if she wanted to go out and play together.
Eloriel smiled and declined: “I prefer the forest over the outside, Long Ling. I can’t go out and play with you.”
Long Ling knew that Eloriel was the Elf Princess and lived in the elf territory, where she received many gifts from nature. A princess also had the responsibility to guard her clan. Most elves disliked going out, living quiet and peaceful lives, just like her mother Shirley. Shirley wasn’t always with Mo Dai; she felt more at ease living in the forest.
Elves were more content to enjoy a peaceful life and listen to the sounds of nature. It would be difficult to adapt to such a species that was almost without desires and had a peaceful mind unless one was born there.
But for dragons, greed and desire were endless. Long Ling and Mo Dai would go out on business together, full of curiosity about everything.
Long Ling was a mixed-blood of dragon and elf. She had both the dragon’s desire for gold coins and the innate love for nature in her bloodline, making her gentler compared to other Alphas.
Long Ling waved goodbye to Eloriel: “When I come back, I’ll bring you an interesting gift.”
Eloriel saw that Long Ling was now sunny and happy, with her mother by her side, and warmly instructed: “Have fun. When you come back, I will also prepare a gift for you.”
Long Ling knew that friendship between friends didn’t require being constantly glued together. Everyone lived in the place they felt most comfortable, and they could share their happiness the next time they met.
She and Mo Dai boarded the carriage heading to Dunba City, while at that moment, Violet finally arrived at the tavern.
The tavern had just opened for business. Two half-beast employees were cleaning and tidying the tables and chairs, chatting idly in the tavern.
“The boss is out traveling again. I wonder how long she’ll be gone this time?”
“The boss isn’t here every day anyway. I really envy the boss; she can go wherever she wants, and she has many elf friends.”
“I heard the boss is actually a dragon, but I don’t know why she’s so close to elves. Is the boss’s love interest an elf?”
“I don’t know. As long as it doesn’t affect our paycheck, it’s fine.”
Violet clenched her fingers, her knuckles cracking audibly, and her dark golden eyes slowly turned fiery red.
Why was it always elves? Her leg had already healed. Why couldn’t Long Ling wait for her a little longer? She rushed over day and night, just wanting to see Long Ling one more time.
She already regretted it. She was just too anxious, too afraid of losing her. If she had shown her a little more patience, she wouldn’t have done what she did before.
But the little dragon just didn’t believe her and wasn’t willing to wait for her anymore.
Violet felt an unprecedented sense of despair. Even though it was a warm autumn day, she had never felt so cold. She hugged her arms tightly, and a chill seeped from her bones.
There would never be another dragon who would hold her body for warmth.
“Your Grace, should I retrieve your cloak and inquire about Miss Long Ling’s whereabouts?”
Violet looked somewhat defeated. She knew that Long Ling, having retreated to the elf territory, would be with that elf, and there was no way she could enter.
Her continuous pestering of Long Ling felt like a futile effort. If she didn’t love her, she just didn’t. Long Ling truly no longer held her in her heart.
But she wasn’t reconciled at all. She had already obtained her, so why should she lose her!
Violet’s usually cold voice trembled uncontrollably: “Find out where she went. I have to find her!”
