- Chapter 62 - She Chases, She Flees
Three days passed in a flash. Long Ling and Mo Dai traveled around for purchases, quickly preparing the goods they needed, and also got to know many local merchants.
These merchants were very polite and accommodating towards Mo Dai.
Seeing her mother’s business booming and earning a lot of gold coins every day, Long Ling’s desire to open her own shop started stirring again.
She had given the pub she ran to Violet, and now that her life was less busy, she felt a little unaccustomed to it. She wanted to start her own business after the Elven Mother Tree Festival was over.
Life in the Elven Tribe was peaceful, but perhaps due to her true nature as a giant dragon, she craved gold coins more than before, hoping to have her own mountain of gold coins.
After leaving Violet, the world was vast. Whatever she did, her mother would support her. No one would ever tell her what she could or could not do again.
She had discovered many different ingredients on this continent and could create various delicacies with her own hands.
Although the Livo Continent was said to be plagued by thieves, Long Ling, as a giant dragon, believed she shouldn’t be afraid. She planned to go back and learn some combat skills from Erolis.
If she encountered petty thieves, maybe she could scare them off, or even ‘rob the robbers’ herself.
There were no taxes here, and the rent for shops was very cheap. With the wealth she currently possessed, she could invest in a commercial building in the most central area.
Her mother’s shop was in the central district. Leaning on the “big tree” that was her mother, she could open her shop nearby, and her mother would surely look out for her.
Long Ling was thinking about her plan to start big and was beginning to feel a little impatient.
“Mom, after the Elven celebration ends, I want to open my own shop here.”
“That’s fine. Do you need Mom to invest for you?”
“I already have a lot of money. What I need are some people.”
“Mom’s shop has some reliable managers. We can ask someone to help you recruit some dwarves to work in your shop.”
“Thank you, Mom.”
Mo Dai stroked her head and said warmly, “The procurement was very smooth, we can leave early. On the way back, we’ll cut through the Kuska Forest, which will save us some time.”
“A group of gnomes live underground in the Kuska Forest. We can purchase some fire moss, Gloom Lotus, and the roots of the carnivorous vine from them. The alchemists in Geru City love those things. The High Priest helped us last time, so we should also send some to her.”
Long Ling was very grateful for the High Priest’s help and suddenly remembered that today was the date she had agreed upon with Loran.
“Are we leaving now? I made an appointment with Crown Princess Loran to deliver the medicine to her today.”
Mo Dai immediately became alert: “Crown Princess Loran? She is Violet’s cousin. Are you letting her take the medicine meant for Violet?”
Long Ling nodded: “I ran into her here three days ago. She said she was on a mission to Nihaya West State and hadn’t completed it yet, so she asked me to wait three days. I gave her our address, and she said she would come here to find me today.”
Mo Dai immediately grabbed her daughter’s hand: “Three days, silly child. Do you know how long it takes to travel from Violet’s estate to this city by carriage?”
Long Ling frowned slightly: “It won’t be three days, will it?”
Mo Dai tapped her on her small head: “Loran and Violet are political allies. She will definitely leak your news to Violet. Violet is probably already on her way.”
Long Ling pinched her fingertips and shook her head at Mo Dai: “I don’t want to see her.”
Mo Dai patted her hand: “Mom will find a way for you.”
As soon as she finished speaking, a servant from outside the manor came to announce that a lady named Loran was outside, looking for Miss Long Ling.
Mo Dai instructed: “Tell her that Miss Long Ling had an urgent matter to attend to and has already left with Madam Mo Dai. Find someone to ride a fast horse, take a shortcut from the back gate, and have the cargo ship anchored at the dock set sail immediately.”
Long Ling turned around and handed the box containing the magic medicine to the servant: “Give this to Lady Loran.”
The servant obeyed the command, held the treasure box with both hands, and immediately went outside the manor.
Violet came in a hurry, only bringing a few personal attendants. The carriage had traveled non-stop for three days. It was dusty on the road, with no rest at all.
She asked Loran for the address and immediately rushed to the Monsi Manor where Long Ling was currently staying.
Loran had never seen Violet so nervous and concerned about a single dragon. She waited at the manor gate, her eyes constantly searching for Long Ling.
Loran saw that Violet had lost a lot of weight and knew that she was just being stubborn. She couldn’t help but worry: “Long Ling promised me that she would wait for me here. You should relax a little. Do you want to eat something first? I heard from your maid that you haven’t eaten for three days because you were rushing.”
Violet’s face was pale, and she refused: “I won’t eat.”
Loran sighed: “How can you not eat? If you keep this up, you’ll faint from hunger before you even catch her.”
She held the sweet bread forward, but Violet’s gaze remained fixed on the front, seemingly only wanting to see Long Ling.
Loran had no choice but to hand the bread to Elina, instructing her to take good care of Her Grace the Duchess.
Elina silently bowed and accepted it. Princess Loran did not know that the Duchess had not had a proper meal for a long time. A sickness of the heart requires a medicine for the heart, and the only person who could make the Duchess well again was Miss Long Ling.
When the servant came out of the manor, bringing only a brocade box, Violet’s eyes froze.
Loran’s heart sank, and she quickly asked: “Where is Miss Long Ling?”
The servant respectfully replied: “Miss Long Ling had an urgent matter to attend to and has already left with Madam Mo Dai. She asked me to give you this leg injury healing potion.”
Violet’s back straightened, and the veins on the back of her clenched hand showed: “When did she leave?”
The servant cautiously replied: “Just a moment ago. The cargo ship anchored at the port should have already set sail.”
Loran immediately looked at Violet: “Should we go to the port and chase after them now?”
Violet’s gaze fell upon her disabled legs. If her legs and dragon tail hadn’t been injured, she could have flown faster with her dragon wings and would have arrived here earlier.
She was only a moment too late to see her little dragon.
The greater the hope, the greater the disappointment.
Violet, sitting in her wheelchair, silently turned in the opposite direction.
Loran took the brocade box handed to her by the servant, caught up with Violet, and kept comforting her: “Actually, your trip here wasn’t in vain. This magic medicine was specially refined for you by Long Ling, who sought out the Elven High Priest. She said it was specifically to treat leg injuries. She must still be thinking of you, otherwise, she wouldn’t have specifically asked me to deliver the medicine to you.”
Violet’s wheelchair did not stop and moved faster than before.
A hint of guilt arose in Loran’s heart. She should have made sure she could keep Long Ling before sending a message to Violet. Now Violet had made a trip for nothing.
When Violet and Loran arrived at the port, the cargo ship under Mo Dai’s name had already hoisted its sails and sailed far away.
The servant reported this matter back to Mo Dai.
Mo Dai raised her eyebrows: “The captain of that cargo ship has been with me for almost a hundred years. She is familiar with the route back to the Elven Tribe, so there is no need to worry about the goods not being delivered to the Elven Tribe on time. So what if she is a Duchess? My daughter is not someone she can just see whenever she wants.”
When Long Ling heard that Violet had come and then left, she felt a slight sense of relief, mixed with a little melancholy.
Long Ling said to Mo Dai: “Let’s leave after half a day, just to make sure Violet’s personal guards are all gone, then we’ll head back.”
Mo Dai looked at Long Ling approvingly and taught her: “You must always be cautious in the future, don’t trust others so easily, and always leave yourself a backup plan.”
Long Ling nodded and hooked her arm through Mo Dai’s: “I understand.”
After the luggage was packed, they left the manor in Nihaya West State and went to a different port, boarding another ship.
The large ship sailed away from the port, and the sea was magnificent. Long Ling stood on the deck, feeding bread crumbs to the seagulls for a while.
The Elven bread was very filling and sweet. The seagulls circled around her, reluctant to leave for a long time.
Although the time spent doing business was not too long, it was exciting and made Long Ling realize the vastness of the world. She was no longer the little cook who was stuck in a small place. There were many more places in this world worth exploring.
Mo Dai saw that her daughter looked increasingly sunny and cheerful after coming out. She walked over and gave the fruit salad she had made to her daughter.
“Eat something. Don’t let the sea breeze blow on you for too long, or what if you get a headache?”
Long Ling’s lips curled into a playful smile: “Mom, my body is much better than before, I’m not afraid of that now.”
Mo Dai forked a piece of fruit and fed it to her daughter’s mouth: “There is a kind of cold called ‘Mom thinks you’re cold.’ I brought a cloak; you can put it on when you go to the cabin.”
Long Ling was fed a bite of banana by Mo Dai. With the cream salad, it was all sweetness in one bite.
She hadn’t finished the first bite when she was fed the second, her mouth stuffed full.
Mo Dai’s heart melted when she saw her daughter’s adorable appearance. She forked several more pieces and fed them all to her precious daughter.
While the mother and daughter were enjoying the time together, the Elven captain suddenly walked over and said, “Madam Mo Dai, a large ship has been following us and we can’t shake it off. What should we do?”
Mo Dai immediately frowned: “Did you see a family crest on that ship?”
The Elven captain shook his head: “No special markings. We have warned the ship several times with signal flags, but they are still in hot pursuit.”
Long Ling and Mo Dai exchanged glances. When they boarded the ship, they had disguised themselves and made sure there were no people from Violet around before they got on the ship. It was strange how they were still being chased.
Could Violet really have such powerful connections?
Mo Dai had never encountered anyone so relentless. She wasn’t this much trouble even when she was being pursued by the Queen!
“Send three small boats out and head in other directions to distract them. I don’t believe a three-hundred-year-old dragon can guess so accurately every time?”
Long Ling knew that her mother had gotten into a contest with Violet, and she didn’t know how to stop her for a moment. Perhaps they were evenly matched opponents.
From Nihaya West State all the way to the Kuska Forest, Mo Dai used all her tricks, but Violet countered every move.
Mo Dai got off the ship with Long Ling and sat in the carriage, saying with a tired expression: “How can she chase so well? She really is a dragon who has been in the military and served as an officer, with such strong reconnaissance awareness. She’s exhausting me.”
Long Ling massaged Mo Dai’s shoulders and said hesitantly: “Why don’t I go and talk to her and ask her to stop following us?”
Mo Dai immediately sat up straight and hugged her daughter: “No! What if she captures you again? I’ll think of another way. I won’t let you be bullied again.”
Long Ling patted her mother’s back: “It’s okay. A lot of her people have been dispersed. Now our manpower is equal to hers, and we’re not without the strength to fight. If I talk to her properly, she should go back.”
Mo Dai felt there was some truth to what Long Ling said, but she was still uneasy: “Mom will stay by your side.”
The carriage stopped before the entrance to the Kuska Forest. Long Ling jumped out of the carriage and stood on the spot waiting for Violet.
Sure enough, the carriage that was following them also stopped. When Violet saw her, she immediately got out of the carriage in her wheelchair.
Violet hadn’t seen Long Ling for more than a month. For so many nights, she could only place Long Ling’s pillow next to her. Smelling the increasingly faint strawberry pheromones, she gradually realized that Long Ling would never return to her side.
Seeing the person she had missed for a long time; she turned her wheelchair and sped up to Long Ling’s side.
Long Ling noticed the exhaustion hidden beneath Violet’s refined appearance. Her dark, curly hair hung down, and she looked much thinner than before.
Long Ling’s eyes were calm: “Why are you following me all the time?”
Violet did not expect Long Ling to look at her with such unfamiliar eyes. They had only been separated for a month; had the little dragon forgotten about her?
Violet’s heart seemed to be bleeding. She looked at Long Ling silently, and her usually proud eyes unconsciously revealed a hint of sadness.
Long Ling was silent for two seconds: “Stop following me. I’m going back to the Elven Tribe. Go back and take your medicine.”
Violet stared at her: “Aren’t you coming back with me?”
Long Ling said softly: “We have terminated our engagement. I am no longer your fiancée and will not be with you. Let’s not see each other again.”
Violet took Long Ling’s hand: “I burned the agreement. It doesn’t count.”
Her hand was colder than before. Long Ling subconsciously looked at Violet and saw that her dark gold eyes were full of bloodshot streaks, like cold glaciers with cracks appearing.
In the moment of her surprise, Violet had already grasped her hand and said gently: “Come home with me. I still have all your things, and the pub is doing very well.”
Long Ling’s hand pressed against Violet’s slender wrist, pulling her hand down, and said plainly: “I won’t go back with you. I have my own home in the Elven Tribe. You should leave. You will get lost if you enter the Misty Forest. Go back and heal your injuries properly.”
