- Chapter 17 - I Won't Do Anything Else Besides Acting."
Qu Ange had no idea what Xu Mi was thinking.
She just noticed that Xu Mi seemed to be in a good mood. No longer wearing that sullen expression from before. Instantly, Qu Ange couldn’t help but feel restless. This was her long-lost lover, and seeing her again brought back all the beautiful memories of the past. Qu Ange remembered how perfectly their bodies had fit together, how Xu Mi’s reactions had always left her breathless. The hands that had been resting on Xu Mi’s waist grew restless, inching upward—just about to reach their target—when Xu Mi turned and pushed her away, saying, “I’m going to take a shower.”
Qu Ange took the hint, assuming this meant they’d proceed after washing up. But the thought of a shower stirred her imagination, and she hooked a finger around Xu Mi’s, suggesting, “We could go together.”
The faint smile on Xu Mi’s face vanished. She looked down at Qu Ange with an expressionless stare.
Qu Ange swallowed hard, retreating to sit properly on the edge of the bed, legs crossed. “You first,” she conceded.
The bathroom for the guest room was outside. The moment Xu Mi left, Qu Ange rummaged through her suitcase for an outfit, finally settling on a set of white lace lingerie and a white shirt. A look she deemed both innocent and seductive. She packed them into a bag, planning to surprise Xu Mi after her shower.
Not long after, Xu Mi returned, not bothering with pajamas and instead wearing an oversized T-shirt that reached her thighs. Even so, Qu Ange felt her mouth go dry. But Xu Mi didn’t spare her a glance, heading straight to the bedside to blow-dry her hair. Not daring to press closer, Qu Ange grabbed her “battle attire” and went to the bathroom.
Midway through her shower, she realized there was no facial cleanser.
…What had Xu Mi used to wash her face?
Puzzled, Qu Ange called Xu Mi on her phone. When the call connected, she said, “Mimi, I forgot my cleanser. Could you bring it for me?”
Xu Mi’s voice was icy. “Use body wash.”
Qu Ange: “…So that’s what you used?”
Xu Mi: “What’s the problem?”
Qu Ange thought to herself: She’d rather make do than trouble me, maybe I should learn to compromise too.
But then she considered her skin and the harsh, drying feel of body wash on her face. Unable to resist, she softened her voice and pleaded, “Please? Just bring it for me?”
Xu Mi didn’t respond, hanging up directly. Qu Ange was debating whether to get dressed and fetch it herself when there was a knock at the bathroom door. Her eyes lit up. Xu Mi wouldn’t be so heartless after all!
Catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror—pale skin like snow, curves in all the right places, looking utterly delectable—she thought, Xu Mi is a healthy adult woman. There’s no way she’d remain unmoved by this.
So as she opened the door, she struck a pose, sweeping her long hair forward to cover her chest, half-revealing herself like a coquettish ingénue. “Thank you, Mimi,” she began sweetly, “I knew you’d—”
Her voice cut off abruptly.
Standing at the door was her mother.
“AHHH!!!” Qu Ange shrieked, scrambling back and yanking a towel over herself.
Her mother rolled her eyes. “I gave birth to you. There’s nothing I haven’t seen. Can’t even remember to bring your things for a shower, bothering Xu Mi like this. You should be ashamed.”
Qu Ange snatched the cleanser. “Get out!”
Her mom scoffed. “Like I want to look.”
With that, she left, her face full of disdain.
Qu Ange closed the door, speechless and choked with emotion. The body that would later be praised by the media as “top-tier figure” and “treasure of the entertainment industry” was now being rejected by two people, something she had never anticipated.
In a deeply melancholic mood, Qu Ange finished her shower, her enthusiasm thoroughly dampened. However, as she dressed and caught sight of herself in the mirror, the steam-blurred reflection still revealed a perfectly proportioned figure with curves in all the right places. The soft bathroom lighting accentuated her beauty. She pulled out her phone for a selfie, and even in the raw camera lens, her lips were rosy, her teeth pearly white, her skin flawless and dewy, with damp strands of hair clinging to her cheeks, making her complexion appear even more delicate and radiant. There was no doubt, she was undeniably beautiful.
Regaining her confidence, she slipped on a shirt, hesitated for a moment, then buttoned it up fully. She thought to herself that slowly undoing each button later might add a certain allure. The idea brought a smile to her face, which she quickly smothered with a few pats to her cheeks, ensuring her expression didn’t turn too suggestive. Then, she stepped out of the bathroom.
Back in the bedroom, Xu Mi was absorbed in her laptop, not sparing her a single glance. Qu Ange went through her skincare routine and blow-dried her hair, but even after all that, Xu Mi still hadn’t turned around. Sitting behind her, Qu Ange asked, “What are you doing?”
Xu Mi replied without looking up, “Working on my resume.”
Qu Ange: “…”
Compared to Xu Mi, who was diligently preparing for the future, she—the one who actually owed money felt utterly lacking in urgency.
Realizing Xu Mi wasn’t going to engage with her, Qu Ange abandoned her earlier romantic fantasies as pure delusion. She retreated to the bed with her phone and noticed that Zuo Qingfang had already accepted her friend request at some point and sent a message:
[May I ask who you are…?]
Qu Ange replied:
[I have some investment ideas I’d like you to handle.]
Zuo Qingfang responded:
[No problem at all. Would you like to discuss it in person? Should I come to you, or would you prefer to meet me?]
Qu Ange:
[Where are you based now—A City or S City?]
Zuo Qingfang:
[A City.]
Qu Ange hesitated at this. She glanced up at Xu Mi. They had attended university in S City, and after graduation, Xu Mi had stayed there for work. Later, Qu Ange had moved to A City to pursue her dreams in the entertainment industry, and most of her connections and opportunities were now centered there. For the sake of future convenience, they would have to relocate to A City.
She wasn’t sure if Xu Mi would agree. Back when she had first moved to A City, she had asked for Xu Mi’s opinion, but Xu Mi had said she was accustomed to life in the south and wasn’t keen on changing cities. Qu Ange, believing she wouldn’t have time to take care of Xu Mi in A City anyway, hadn’t pushed the matter. Over time, the emotional distance between them had grown—partly, perhaps, due to the physical separation.
Having learned from her past life, Qu Ange had no intention of maintaining a long-distance relationship with Xu Mi this time. But she didn’t know how to bring it up. These days, she was constantly anxious, always afraid of upsetting Xu Mi.
Zuo Qingfang sent another message:
[If I may ask, who referred you to me?]
The other party probably found it odd—Qu Ange didn’t even know which city she worked in, so how had she sought her out?
After some thought, Qu Ange replied:
[Just found you online.]
After replying, she put down her phone and stared blankly at Xu Mi’s back. Xu Mi was intently browsing job-hunting websites. Qu Ange bit her lip and leaned in, placing a hand on Xu Mi’s shoulder. Xu Mi paused, tilting her head slightly as she asked, “What is it?”
Her thick lashes veiled the sparkle in her eyes, making her expression seem cold. Qu Ange spoke cautiously, “Mimi, can we go to City A together to start fresh?”
Xu Mi raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
Qu Ange said, “I… I think City A suits me better.”
Xu Mi replied, “It’s for becoming a star, isn’t it?”
Qu Ange fell silent, tacitly admitting it. Xu Mi turned to look at her and suddenly asked, “Can’t you really give up on being a star?”
In truth, Qu Ange had noticed over the past two days that Xu Mi clearly had reservations about her dream of entering the entertainment industry. But for Qu Ange, giving up on showbiz was impossible. If nothing else, she had miraculously been reborn but if she didn’t pursue the entertainment industry, her rebirth would be meaningless. She knew nothing about any other career path.
So even though she sensed Xu Mi’s disapproval, she could only pretend not to notice.
She licked her lips and finally said, “Other than acting, I don’t know how to do anything else.”
That was the absolute truth.
Xu Mi turned back to face the screen and uttered a flat, “Oh.”
A long silence stretched between them. Qu Ange began to panic and poked Xu Mi’s back. “So, what do you think?”
“Hmm?” Xu Mi seemed indifferent. “Sure. Didn’t I just say ‘oh’?”
Qu Ange sprang up from the bed in delight. “Really? Then let’s go straight to City A tomorrow!”
Xu Mi nodded.
Though her attitude wasn’t exactly enthusiastic, it was clear she had agreed. Qu Ange was so thrilled she nearly jumped for joy. She rolled around on the bed, then stood up and hugged Xu Mi. Xu Mi, busy sending out resumes, lifted her head impatiently, ready to push Qu Ange away again—only to see that the loose chiffon shirt the other woman wore had slipped off her left shoulder from the sudden movement, revealing the delicate lace bra beneath and a generous expanse of skin.
Xu Mi raised an eyebrow slightly. Sensing the change in her expression, Qu Ange bit her lip and leaned in closer, about to say something flirtatious, when Xu Mi remarked, “It’s better not to wear a bra to bed. It can cause breast hyperplasia.”
Xu Mi turned back to her computer. “Switching cities suddenly means I have to start job-hunting all over again. You go ahead and sleep. I’ve got work to do.”
Qu Ange: “…Oh.”
