Let Me Go, My Childhood Sweetheart [Rebirth] - Chapter 49
By the end of the weekend, Jin Yi had to head back.
During those two days, aside from the Ancient City, they had also visited the Prince’s Mansion, leaving Jin Yi feeling immensely satisfied. To visit her favorite places with her favorite person there was no better feeling in the world.
Chu Weiran was equally satisfied, though for a different reason: because they had such a good time, Jin Yi had been in an exceptionally good mood. On Saturday night, she had let Chu Weiran taste her fill. Of course, Jin Yi had also thoroughly exhausted her in the process.
“Xiao Yi, stay safe on the way back.”
At the station, the two of them put on a scene of a reluctant farewell. The little assistant, Xiao Jiang, simply couldn’t look.
“I will. I’ll message you once I’m back in Ling City.”
“Okay!”
After saying that, Chu Weiran wrapped her arms around Jin Yi’s waist and pressed a lingering kiss to the corner of her lips. They dawdled until the very last minute of the boarding time before Chu Weiran finally let go.
Before they were together, just catching a glimpse of Jin Yi was enough to satisfy her. But now, she found herself becoming more and more insatiable; she wanted to be by Jin Yi’s side every second of the day. She watched Jin Yi walk away, her eyes fixed on her figure until it disappeared completely.
The assistant quickly stepped forward. “President Chu, we…”
“Let’s go.” Chu Weiran put on her sunglasses, her face instantly returning to a state of noble, icy elegance, giving the assistant no chance to finish her sentence. She knew exactly what Xiao Jiang was going to say.
The assistant was stunned into silence and followed behind quietly. If she hadn’t seen President Chu’s smiles with her own eyes over the last two days, she might have actually been intimidated by this cold facade.
Xiao Jiang was also from Ling City but had gone to university in the capital. After graduating, she had planned to find a job back home and interviewed for a secretarial position at the Chu Group. Unexpectedly, she caught Chu Weiran’s eye and was kept by her side.
“Xiao Jiang, send me that script in a bit.”
Once in the car, Chu Weiran closed her eyes to rest. Her sudden request snapped Xiao Jiang back to attention.
“Yes, President Chu.”
Chu Weiran had resolved the scandal involving the minor star within just three days. Now, various film investment opportunities were waiting for her. Setting aside her natural talent, her memories from her previous life acted like a “cheat code” for investments. Things she had to ponder deeply in her past life required almost no effort now.
However, the veterans in the company didn’t trust her yet. She desperately needed to establish her authority. Since film returns aren’t instantaneous, she needed to find “undervalued gems”, the fastest way to see a return.
She needed to build her reputation as quickly as possible; otherwise, she would be stuck on long-term business trips to the capital indefinitely.
Back in Ling City, Jin Yi messaged Chu Weiran the moment she got off the high-speed train. Chu Weiran didn’t reply immediately, but Jin Yi didn’t mind, assuming she was busy again. She sent another message telling her to rest well, then took a taxi back to school.
This trip to the capital had clarified many things for her. She decided she wanted to graduate early. Her future goals were set, and this trip had made her even more determined. she wanted to finish her studies as fast as possible to be closer to Chu Weiran.
Both women were planning to get closer to one another, yet their paths were slightly divergent. In her past life, their interactions had been sparse, and Jin Yi didn’t know much about Chu Weiran’s work. She only knew that Chu Weiran traveled frequently; she didn’t know where, but it seemed she was rarely in Ling City.
To give Chu Weiran more freedom in the future, Jin Yi decided to follow in her footsteps. After graduating a year early, she could apply for graduate school at Peking University.
And so, Jin Yi began a life of intense focus. She planned to finish all her sophomore courses this semester, apply for early graduation next semester while completing her junior year curriculum, and then prepare her thesis. After that came the graduate entrance exams.
Jin Yi was incredibly busy. Fortunately, she had already encountered all this material in her previous life, so she only needed to consolidate it. Aside from her daily scheduled video calls with Chu Weiran, every other minute of her day was packed.
Even Qu Yin, who attended the same school, rarely saw her. Jin Yi was practically living in the library, bolting there the second classes ended. Learning was, after all, the thing Jin Yi was most naturally gifted at.
While Jin Yi was busy, Chu Weiran was equally swamped. What should have been a month-long trip was compressed by Chu Weiran into three weeks. She only communicated with Jin Yi via video chat, working through her weekends just to return to Ling City early.
The day before her return, she finalized her work arrangements and called her father, telling him the news of her return must be kept strictly secret. No one else would know, but Chu Zhenglong definitely would; if he slipped up, her surprise for Jin Yi would be ruined.
On the night of November 21st, Chu Weiran arrived back in Ling City by train. When she left, the weather only required a thick coat, but now, even a wool overcoat couldn’t block the chill. It was colder than the capital.
Wrapping her coat tightly around her, Chu Weiran walked through the Ling University campus with her suitcase. She was filled with anticipation for tomorrow—and even more for the day after.
If there was one thing she was most proud of over the years, it was her and Jin Yi’s birthdays. They were exactly three years apart. Chu Weiran’s birthday was November 22nd, and Jin Yi’s was November 23rd. Their birthdays were separated by only a single day.
She had a custom ring from UR, a one-of-a-kind piece. In just ten minutes, she would be able to give Jin Yi her birthday present. Her pace quickened; she couldn’t wait to see her.
She reached the dormitory and, after greeting the dorm manager, headed upstairs. She was so full of joy that she hadn’t noticed that the lights in Jin Yi’s room were off.
Standing at the door, Chu Weiran was dazed. It was past 7:00 PM; why wasn’t Jin Yi here? After waiting for a minute, she decided to call her, but she hung up halfway through. If she asked Jin Yi why she wasn’t in the dorm, Jin Yi would surely become suspicious.
Instead, she called Jing Miao Miao. She knew the two had moved in together, as Jing Miao Miao posted about it on social media every day.
“Weiran? What’s up?”
“Is Qu Yin there?”
“She is, but she’s in the shower. What is it?”
“Ask her if she knows where Jin Yi is.”
“Why? Can’t you get a hold of her?” Jing Miao Miao’s voice was teasing. Chu Weiran ignored the jab and simply repeated, “Ask Qu Yin. Does she know?”
She had intended this to be a surprise, so she didn’t want to tell anyone, but since she was already in Ling City, there was no harm in speaking up. “I wanted to surprise her, but it turns out she’s not here.”
“Okay, I’ll go ask.”
Shuffling sounds came through the phone, followed by the muffled conversation between Jing Miao Miao and Qu Yin. Chu Weiran, having sharp ears, caught the word “library” and hurriedly headed downstairs toward the library.
Just as she cleared the dorm building, Chu Weiran’s phone rang again. It was Jing Miao Miao. In her haste, Chu Weiran hadn’t stayed on the line, so Jing Miao Miao had called back.
“Hello, Weiran.”
Because she was in a rush, Chu Weiran didn’t stop walking, her breathing a bit heavy. “What’s wrong?”
“Well! Jin Yi isn’t at school.”
Chu Weiran stopped dead in her tracks. Her tone turned serious. “What exactly is going on?”
“Hold on, I’ll let Xiao Yin tell you.”
Qu Yin waved her hands in dismissal, but Jing Miao Miao handed her the phone anyway. It was better for Qu Yin to explain this clearly.
Qu Yin took the phone and gave a dry, awkward greeting. “Senior Chu.”
Chu Weiran didn’t have time for pleasantries. “Where exactly is Xiao Yi?”
Qu Yin looked at the grinning Jing Miao Miao and felt speechless. What kind of mess had these two gotten themselves into?
“Uh! Jin Yi went to the capital.”
